I am also a blak artist and I think it is important to show up for now. There is a real change but the art world still remain a white thing this must change as we Black people are de facto artistically skilled. I wish you the best for 2024.
Please do the second part ,but make sure you do a deep research about artists who are not "market stars," but their work is or has been as good as those. It's a pity that only artists living or working in the USA and England are the ones who get recognized. Despite all that, this is a good and serious video, and I thank you for that.
I had the extraordinary privilege of being a docent for Amoako Boafo’s show at the Seattle Art Museum. Viewers were dazzled and moved by the presence he created for his subjects. I am forever changed by his compassion and sensitivity in ‘elevating and celebrating’ each subject.
Thanks for sharing, a few names for part 2, Sonia boyce. Lubaina Himid, Lina Iris Viktor, Carrie Mae Weems, Edouard Duval Carrie, Frank Bowling, Hurvin Anderson, Barbara Walker, Simone Leigh…
Loved it all!!! It is a great way to raise awareness on African American artist! Would you have shorter versions I could share with my French students in the view of having them debating on ART as a soft power??? Thanks very much!
I've turned a few into actual shorts. Here are a few. ua-cam.com/users/shortsILN8J7P1cgE?si=XDHG9c00odVx3kNy - ua-cam.com/users/shortsv1sWgKYiiIo?si=ekuuCpk_cs6ENFNf - ua-cam.com/users/shortsSkBuHufD0Vc?si=xmM9URM-n5g_IV2T. Thank you so much for watching and wanting to share.
Melanie McCollin Walker paints beautiful oil seascapes in a modern style. I don't know if she's as big a name in the business as the artists on this list, but she's very young, and if she isn't already, she soon will be.
Thank you for this video. My husband and I learn so much from your videos. As an artist myself I am alway looking to learn all I can about the art world. Could you share your favorite self taught artist if you have any and your favorite abstract artists? I would love to hear your thoughts and learn more from you.
This first top 10 was so hard to make! Of course Kehende should be on a list like this. But I thought it was important to balance the list with artist who don’t recieve the recognition they should as well as women. Kehinde will be on the next top 10. 🤍
As an artist, i find it hilarious to hear an art world person say "maybe we dont have to do things one way" 😂 but your vid made me hopeful about our trajectory so ty
This is my first time watching your videos and I found it informative and refreshing. I’ll be subscribing. I would recommend that you practice pronouncing some word before filming, such as “legends” and “Carnegie”.
I agree 100%. El Anatsui, too. I am pleased to see Mark Bradford and Rashid Johnson here, as they should be. I know that portraiture and narrative work is the bread & butter of the black art world, and that abstract does not appeal to such a wide swath of art collectors, but I would love for Moriah to cover more black abstract artists. Pamela Joyner is the only big collector of black abstract artists that I am aware of..... other than myself (on a very small scale)! All that said, Moriah is doing a great job on educating and keeping us up on what's happening in the black art world..... I love this channel and am grateful for her contribution.
El Anatsui Is one of my absolute favorite artist. And I totally agree they should be on the list. It was a tough list & I wanted to leave room to continue the series. Thank you so much for watching.
If you define your self in one way people around you do the same. There are a lot of "black artists" out there that are successful in there colorless works. In the long end groups that defined them self as special going to be treated that way and isolated.
Black artist are defined as black artist whether they define themselves as black artist or not. Same as queer artist, Asian artist, Hispanic artist. And the reality is, curators, collectors, museums also “focus” on groups. Collectors may have a focus on collecting contemporary African artist. Or contemporary black American artist. People categorize at every stage.
because its a lot of pressure on black artist to be BLACK artist, i went to art school and white professors kept pushing me to be blacker. i think a lot of artist feel like that's what gets them in the door. kerry james marshall is the o.g and the innovator but a lot of newer black artist it feels forced to me.
"An artist's duty, as far as I'm concerned, is to reflect the times." -Nina Simone. Depending on your perspective, understanding or knowledge and experience with race- race is connected to power and identity and a source of not only history and storytelling but joy, imagination and possibilities. It’s a profound and intellectual yet practical subject that is a privilege and responsibility to explore if you seek to create art that inspires one to be human in a world that attempts to steal your humanity. Also- outside of the art world, you are punished, attacked, ignored, persecuted and even killed for centering race so art has always been a space and opportunity to process a construct that shapes American life
I struggle with this same subject. I’ve been abstract from day one. Have never painted one human figure in my work. I’m black. But until people see my face they don’t think a black person painted it. I won’t change. We are not a monolith. Must fill all the lanes. Not just one.
@@DearGlorywithMoriahAlise They're all Black, which is why they're on your list. By focusing solely on their skin color, you're diminishing their artistic identity. These individuals are not African; they're American. Only one person on your list is actually from Africa. How sad to be called a black artist or a woman artist rather than an artist. Americans always love to divide and make issues where there is none. Sad.

Finally, a well researched and satisfying top ten of black artists on UA-cam. Awesome work Moriah.
Thank You!
As an emerging artist these videos have been vital to helping me ascend in the art industy

Thank you. I agree, this honestly deserves to be an ongoing series. I’m working on another now. 🤍

No, Julie Mehretu? She, in my opinion, deserves to be on the list.

*Kerry James Marshall
Just recorded the second installment to this video. And he is the first mentioned! 🩷
As a black artist that tries to be creative and very imaginative, I wonder why so many black artist always want to do something has to do with race?
I had this exact convo yesterday. What if a brother wants to paint flowers.
I have so many thoughts towards this.

who is the youngest artist on this list?
Splendid⛰️🇺🇬
If a person keep saying the earth is flat others will believe.
It is not about black panther
So basically, all AMERICAN artists. Only one African. What is this African American?? They are American artists, nothing special.
They’re actually very special. That’s why they’re on the list.
