My dear departed friend Anton Visser’s love for music was well known, and a genre that he particularly enjoyed was Cape Jazz.
It therefore seemed fitting, on what would have been his 60th Birthday today, to do a tribute to him with the music of two of the younger musicians who embody the Cape Jazz genre … Kyle Shepherd’s haunting “Spirit of Hanover Park”; … and Ramon Alexander’s “Oom Robbie Jansen” (a tribute in itself to another of the Cape Jazz legends).
Both Kyle and Ramon have acknowledged the influence of Abdullah Ibrahim in their musical development, so it seemed equally fitting to end off this (rather hastily thrown together) medley with Abdullah Ibrahim’s iconic “Chisa”
Enjoy !! … while imagining Visser doing the “Madiba Jive” to its rhythm …
May Anton’s spirit live on, and may his dear soul continue to rest in peace 🕊️
