    Rick wasn’t just a Vietnam veteran, he wasn’t even American..he was in the British army because he was born in Cornwall uk. He was also in the Northern Rhodesian police for 3 years, also had a short stint in the Met police in the uk He aspired to join in the Vietnam war, which he did. He lead a fruitful life filled with trying to make the world around him better. We Brits, especially the Cornish, are proud of him for what he accomplished.

    In 1993, at the World Trade Center bombing, Rick Recorla was the last
    person to exit those buildings. He
    had to "do a final sweep" to make
    sure he'd gotten all his people out.
    That's what he was doing on 9/11
    when his Tower came down.
    And it was Rick Rescorla who said;
    "All the real heroes are dead."

      >"All the real heroes are dead."
      That line of thinking is pretty common in the military. My WWII vet great-grandfather who was awarded a Silver Star threw it in the garbage and said "I'm not a hero! The only heroes are dead heroes."

      Thank you for the clarification regarding Rick R. I clicked on this video to learn more about "The Vietnam Vet..." not knowing his role in the events of 9/11. 25 minutes in I still knew little other than he did safety training and had leadership abilities. I wish they had put sometime like your summary in the beginning of the video so the interview made more sense. Kudos to the gentleman being interviewed but this clip is more about him than Rick.

      @@Lynn-kh5rs So, I'm a bit confused. I am unfamiliar with Rick's story. Did he survive the attack? Is he still alive? What happened to him? The title is misleading. I thought I would hear Mr. Lescorla tell his own story. Who is the narrator? I'm not hearing anything about Rick R. so far and the video is over half over.
      Okay, finally the interviewer clarifies that Rick was one of 12 people who didn't make it out.

      @@lemorab1Rick was one of the 12 from MS that did not survive. I never met him but was employed by MS and was one of the 276 trainees, it is my understanding Rick was behind all of us in getting out. MS was the largest lease holder at the time with over 20 floors. Our training was held on 61st floor but tons of other MS employees who worked in the building daily were all spread out amongst those floors - he was floor sweepin making sure everyone was out - since MS only lost 12 people, they had to have at least made it to the stairwell and were on their way down when WTC2 crumbled.

      @@missyscarborough1301 Thank you so much for this clarification! My good friends Janette MacKinlay and Jim Lecce lived across the street from the WTC, on the opposite (rear) side of the building that got hit first, and rumors abounded about what had happened, because no one could see anything. They didn't realize they were in Deep Sh*t until the tower literally began to collapse and everyone ran into the enclosed, central hallway of the apartment building. Janette wrote a detailed book about her personal experience of 9/11 and the immediate aftermath, self-published, called "Fortunate." Janette and Jim both died of cancer in 2010.

    For Rick Riscorla's bravery on 11 September 2001, for his exploits as told in "We Were Soldiers... and Young" and for his joie de vivre he is a hero of mine. I first learned of Colonel Riscorla's story in a reprint of the New Yorker Story "All the True Heroes are Dead," this was the most profoundly sad story of love I have ever read but not because of how Rick lived his live but for who he left behind. I hope to be as brave and live life as well as he did.

      In St. Augustine, Dan Hill was laying tile in his upstairs bathroom when his wife called, “Dan, get down here! An airplane just flew into the World Trade Center. It’s a terrible accident.” Hill hurried downstairs, and then the phone rang. It was Rick Rescorla, calling from inside the South Tower.
      “Are you watching TV?” he asked. “What do you think?”
      “Hard to tell. It could have been an accident, but I can’t see a commercial airliner getting that far off.”
      “I’m evacuating right now,” Rescorla said.
      Hill could hear Rescorla issuing orders through the bullhorn. He was calm and collected, never raising his voice. Then Hill heard him break into song:
      Men of Cornwall stop your dreaming;
      Can’t you see their spearpoints gleaming?
      See their warriors’ pennants streaming
      To this battlefield.
      Men of Cornwall stand ye steady;
      It cannot be ever said ye
      for the battle were not ready;
      Stand and never yield!

      You need to look into William Rodriguez..but I'm sure you believe he was a fraud..your guy when the building collapsed was how far away? Willie was last survivor out. .when the very last floor collapsed willie ran out the main entrance and went under a fire truck.. he was completely covered in debris. how far away was your guy ? Willie had a master key and used it opening every door for every fire fighter...did your guy have a master key? Willie had witnesses saying he was on oxygen for 45 minutes after they dug him out...the second he came too he ran for the building again to save more lives and he didn't know the building was gone...how long was your guy unconscious with oxygen? Willie went to work that morning a atheist and when he came too he was a born again Christian

      I'm remembering willie saying he would go down to the street and see 100s of jumpers that were obliterated upon contact with the reinforced concrete. And the fire chief telling him or really ordering to not go back in that building. He obviously refusing. Went back over and over..I'm sure the long version of your guys STORY he mentions all the carnage all the jumpers jumping. I'm sure he mentions all the explosions before the planes crashed...one of the last William saved was a over weight lady no shoes couldn't walk..so willie convinces a fire fighter we can put her in a wheelchair and drag her down 70 stories....willie cleaned the stairs every day. He was in super human shape..she made it down. But willie remembers going for more.and willie describes later that when he got to the street again he saw that heavy lady cut into several pieces.he says that huge glass sections had fallen and hit that lady that he saved....William describes thinking about his mother just as your guy talks about talking to his parents...but willie describes pleading with God .asking God that if I don't survive promise me you will not let me die in a place where my mother will see me on TV...willie was a simple janitor. He vacuumed and swept all 112 stairs on the floors.not like your guy..I'm sure your guy was REALLY there saving 100s but he just doesn't descibe it like willie does.Maybe your guy had such a traumatic experience he just doesn't remember things like willie .but I'm sure your guy was REALLY there..Right ?

      No one is lying about being there that day. Rick was working with Morgan Stanley on the upper floors and he got most of his crew out and William saved thousands of people due to his janitor position and having a master key for all 100 stairwells.
      But the thing is, there were thousands of survivors that day, and that means there is going to be thousands of survivor stories! We haven't heard them all!

Rest assured, every person telling their story of that day is not speaking out loud every ounce of what the saw, what they felt, what the heard, what the smelt …… for years! Some of us feel like

      Of course there are the a******, but I think some people do not get that if the story makes you sad or is tragic, putting a thumbs down does not mean that they're saying they didn't like the situation. If that makes sense, but i know it happens.
      Giving a thumbs up however means you are paying homage & respect to the heroes, survivors, those lost, and ALL of their loved ones.
      There are people in this time still learning to navigate social media.

    While I always knew Riscola died a hero on 9/11, i never knew he worked for Corporate Security at Morgan Stanley until watching this video. This makes me appreciate his efforts of heroism even more because I coincidentally work for the same Firm today. If he survived I could be shaking his hand one day. Its impressive that he saved literally 99% of the Firm employees that day and sacrificed his life in the process. without his efforts, some - if not a great amount - of the Firm employees I provide support to and work with might not be around today. In fact, I recently did a support ticket for Corporate Security and thought of how I could have met Riscola today should he still be around. Every time I exit the building, there is a memorial placard in front of the lobby including Riscola’s name. I always look at his name and think “what a true and smart hero”.
