🙄I was enthusiastic about moving to Mex in retirement. That was 12 years ago. After many trips, I wasn’t impressed with the quality of construction. I completely changed my mind and decided to stay home and visit Mex during the winter and Christmas season. Cheaper and reliable. A short term rental, motel or hostel is more than enough.
Exactly.... Finally i have found your message that prove that i thought the same. I work in Europe for an Enterprise of general maintenance inside buildings (Electric system, heating system, plumbering, furnishing and cleaning). I wanted to build a house for me and my wife in Mexico, but i saw that in many sites during the building works (even sites that are supposed to be expansive and exclusive), materials are just basic or low quality if compaired to Europe. I saw that many construction sites still use bricks (the orange ones), that in Europe were used during the 1800/1900. Luxury estates use cement blocks instead (the white ones), which are better, but here we go: these materials are sold as "luxury houses", yet in Europe are outdated (now in Europe are used blocks with air maze inside and polistirene panels, to keep the houses warm at winter and cool at summer). Glass windows are just basic here. Double glass It seems doesn't exist. Floor tiles are mostly imported from abroad, and plumbing materials seem almost from second hand shops..... Forget about solar panels on the roof. And I can keep going...... Funny thing Is that house prices in Mexico (both if you want to build or buy a ready house) are much more expansive than the materials they use......,
We are on the tail end of our build. It has been a long haul. Too many experiences to write about here but we finally took over the build ourselves about two years ago because we had so many problems. No small feat for a 56 and 63 year old couple with minimal financial means. But we are doing it. There are so many things we wish we had known 6 years ago…thanks for the video
Wow - that sure sounds intimidating. Would love to have custom for sure! Daunting (but rewarding?). Was it financially beneficial to build from scratch over all?
Good day Cheryl, I’ve watched your video and found it very interesting. I’ve lived in the States for many years and I’m returning home (Guadalajara) after a few decades. I am looking for a recommendation about a contractor. I have a house and it’s built but very old. My thoughts are to build it from scratch. I hope you can point me to the right direction. Thank you 🙏
It's great to hear you're coming back to Guadalajara! I can't recommend specific contractors but I can recommend an engineering firm. If you use FB, message me at Cherylynn Ferrari so I can help you out.
My Mexican wife and I built our large home in the middle of Mexico 21 years ago. Did almost none of your pricey recommendations apart from being on-site daily. That is very important. Get a great builder and trust him. We designed the house on graft paper.
Thanks for commenting. Things change in 21 years but got your point. I live in a high expat area and sadly, the con artists prey on us whenever we drop our guard. There are good builders. But you have to look hard.
She is so right and great advice. Be careful and hire reputable people, some folks play the part of contractor but they are not experienced and just want to rip you off. Always always always pay for the material yourself, unless you have experience in construction and can get a quote for both labor and materials and can conclude the quote is reasonable. Even then make sure you know what type of material they will use and anything that is not to your standards have them change in the contract / listing of materials report that will be used. For example, I had my builder put together "castillos" manually by hand , with 3/8" rebar. Originally the builder had quoted and wanted to use "armex" which is a prefrabicated "castillo" and in my opinion much weaker than 3/8" rebar. Remember it's your house, and you should build it strong and earthquake resistant.
I'm in the midst of building my property, mostly walling off at the moment. It's been over a year so far. I save in labour costs by sharing a 2-3 man crew. Soon the house will start. Thank you for sharing.
I had no say in the building of the home and Ferretería my husband had built. He had it started before we got together, and we were in the United States. He is a Mexican citizen and had his family supervise. They didn't put a staircase in the Ferretería for the second floor, and our home has a water problem in the roof.
Honey, I'm not one of those rich Americans. I sold my FL house to build this one. I used part of my IRA for improvements and down-payment on land. Seller was kind enough to take 50% and finance the rest over 5 years zero interest. I am blessed.
Well, Blue Sky Sanctuary has other ideas about all this and I am much more on her page than all this. Do your research and decide what kind of Mexico life you want folks. Brighton at Almost Retired in Mexico's page is a great resource. I can't understand this.
@@cherylynnferrari8468The Mexicans have zero qualms about calling you a "guero". You are not their color. You are not part of their culture. You never will be. Is that "racist" or reality?

So sorry you had so much trouble but you know ... what doesn't kill us ....
Wow - I would think a build can be done in 7 months. Years? Ouch
Thanks so much, Cheryl yon! I now you really went through hell on your home, as did I.
I know this channel will be a big help to many others.
Thank you so much Please share with your friends.

Definitely intimidating. But most certainly financially in my favor.
I have been learning about building a house for a couple of years, and I still learned from this video!
Glad you got some benefit. Hope you'll subscribe and watch the other videos. Especially those about building.

@cherylynnferrari8468 I have seen many UA-camrs who create titles in such a way that they have to click on their videos to see their titles
I would try not to ever do that. I really hate click bait.@@Easyservice-x8q
Well done! 👍
Thank you! 👍
We sold we're moving back to the United States. Mexico is now very scary the new government is very scary now things are changing in Mexico.
States are not scary?😅
Yes please go back to your country!!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂
Do you know who just got chosen (?) for President in the US? I’d stay in Mexico!
you have to do what makes sense to you. i feel far more safe here at Lake Chapala than i would in the US.

Sounds like a great deal of micromanaging.
Very much
Thanks for sharing. Nothing quite like experience to help reset "expatations". Why do I feel like "brave" was code for stupid?! 😂
Learning experiences never end.
It must take hundreds of thousands of dollars to do all that

@cherylynnferrari8468 Yes, honey
i didnt mean to sound derogatory. Where I'm from we often say honey, sweetie, and dear. Forgive me if i offended you.

well thank you for using my video comment section for posting an ad for someone else. very poor manners.
You should update the title of video:
10 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE BUILD YOUR HOUSE IF YOURE WHITE!!!!
I'm not sure why you made that comment. It sounds very racist which I am not and don't think I said anything to lead you to believe that.

Aren’t you white too? What do you mark in the census?
the locals i know and meet are gracious, kind, and helpful. why would you even comment in such a negative way?
