Hey Daniel, any chance you can ask Folio Society if they plan to do The Wheel of Time in the very near future? I would really love to see Folio do with The Wheel of Time what they did with A Song of Ice & Fire. My God those A Song of Ice & Fire books from Folio are simply divine, would love to see Folio give the same gorgeous treatment to The Wheel of Time.

Alice in Wonderland is probably much cheaper than you imagined because it is out of copyright and they don't have to pay for the rights. All costs go to producing the book, and not buying the story.

I’ll never judge anyone for spending their money on an edition they think is worth it. You do you! I’ve done dumb moves in my past for sure lol but the thing that cracks me up about special editions is the art. Because growing up I remember thinking, “it has pictures, it’s probably a kids book”. And now as an adult, I want all the illustrations 😂 oh how the turntables…

  • @HeronKij

Something I always appreciate about Folio is not just the art, which is consistently gorgeous, but the printing is immaculate. Best part? Huuuuuge headers, footers, and sides of the page so you don't have to risk smudging that beautifully printed ink.
Also? Daniel? Are you stalking my Folio orders? I just ordered Dune Messiah and Frankenstein like less than a month ago.
Also, Dune. Because why have the epilogue without the damn main story?

I love Folio. They're a great quality publisher, good binding, interesting covers, quality materials, and their selection tends to be quite good, though a tad eclectic. But the latter can be a plus for an omnivore like myself. I wish they were closer to Easton Press in terms of materials, the leather covers and moire end sheets are hard to beat. But I'm glad Folio Society exists and is active to this day.

  • @WildSonne
    @WildSonne 10 місяців тому +5

I find the outlining in folio books very interesting. They seem to have a lot of space on the outside of the pages to make sure pages are big enough for beautiful art. This creates the problem of having too much space for lettering, giving the solution of either filling the page up with more words or changing the size of the words. They do neither and make it look like an artistic choice. Now there's still enough pages to be worth the price they're asking, whilst not enlarging the lettering so you still feel like you're reading a sophisticated book, which is what Folio wants you to assocuate with them. Smart!

Every time I look at a special edition of my favorite book it brings me such joy. I love showing them off to friends and usually the artwork is very helpful in convincing them to read. I was one of those people who purchased the entire Wheel of Time series before even finishing the first book.
But I and my reasons: 1. I read over half of the first book and was absolutely enthralled and wanted more.
    2. I had heard quite a bit about the series from this channel.
I am now the proud owner of the mass market paperback editions as well as (my favorite) hardcover editions with original artwork.
I want to give a big shout-out and thanks to you and your channel, if it weren't for all your videos on the Wheel of Time, I might have never touched the series.

When I was in middle school around 20 years ago, I read a piece of fan fiction based on the Wheel of Time. From that alone I got my mom to order from Amazon the first two boxed sets (6 books) in Mass Market paper back. And I think not long after, certainly not before completing what I had, then rest of the series (4 mass market editions) were ordered. I may be mis-remembering and more were ordered at once right from the start.

This opinion can be popular or unpopular either way for a future hot take:I think accusing an author for being disgraceful for having no racial or Igbt elements/characters in his or her fantasy, sci-fi, or horror works is just unfair and ridiculous.
Just because it doesn't have those things doesn't mean the author is prejudice. If it doesn't have those things, then that's fine. It's just an author's personal preference, even if it's something the complainers weren't wanting or expecting.
For example, if I was an author, and if someone came knocking on my door and saying, "I don't like how this character you made is not a non-binary black lesbian with Tourette's Syndrome, so I want you to make this character that way right now" my response would be "No. I got to make this anyway. This came out of my head, so please let me be." I think nobody should be forced to follow any ideology they personally don't believe in. The same goes for storytelling. Every author should be able to tell whatever story they want with whatever message they want. I'm just sick and tired of this constant and unnecessary push by certain groups to just sterilise our entertainment. If someone's offended by a book a story, character or whatever it could be, it's Ok be offended. Just don't watch/read it.
      Any comments? Anyone agree?

One is gaming books, which are going to be carted around and read and referenced a lot over an extended period of use, yes, absolutely, I go for the higher-quality printing if it's an option (and reasonable). The other is books that are in and of themselves special enough to keep hold of long-term and potentially pass along to someone who is going to find the book just as special. Like religious families do with bibles (and other religious texts). I've got a few of those - poetry, recipe books, language textbooks, and maybe a few novels.
Sucks about the water damage - I live in a wet climate, and that is probably part of the reason I usually don't bother with special editions (my gaming books are currently living in a large stack on a pallette in the middle of the room, because when I tried to shelve them in the corner I was going to use, they started warping and crinkling due to moisture coming in through the walls). It's funny, actually - 'lower quality' paperbacks here are actually a bit more resilient to wet and moisture because they have to be able to survive it in transport. In future, to avoid water-damage - those cheap, plastic packing-tubs are pretty good, provided that they don't crack or break, or have water reach the seal around the top; if any of those things happen they can serve instead to hold water _in_ and turn your books and other water-sensitive items into soup. We usually move anything really water-sensitive (like books and electronics) inside the passenger cabin of a car, on the back seat, where it won't get rained on - but that's not always feasible or practical, so plastic tubs are a nice second choice. If you're really worried about the crack around the lid, you can also masking-tape over that, makes for a pretty good dry-box.

i have the wheel of time paperbacks too. but instead of the full box its boxes in five sets of three. and there too they put together towers of midnight, a memory of light and new spring. In that order. new spring being at the end was not a mistake. likewise with the complete wheel of time ebook with a matching cover to these editions new spring is at the end.

I could see myself purchasing folio society books for absolute favorites that will always be on my shelf. So for me that would be Robin Hobb liveship traders and the Bloody Jack series by L.A. Meyer and Garth Nix Abhorsen series and the Dragonbone Chair AND Joe Abercrombie.
Actually if I was gonna prioritize I would definitely go for Abercrombie. Daniel can you please make use of your insider trading privileges to ask the folio ppl if they have any Abercrombie books in the works?

    • @nanotyrannus5435
      @nanotyrannus5435 10 місяців тому

Probably no Abercrombie, for Folio's model publishers are usually VERY reluctant to give out rights to relatively recent books, which is part of the reason the catalogue of Folio skews pretty far towards classics. There are a bunch of other small publishers doing limited editions of more recent novels at similar or higher quality levels though. Unfortunately both the first books are sold out already, but Grim Oak Press is doing Memory, Sorrow and Thorn currently and Curious King Books is doing First Law.

The new wheel of time series is amazing value without the discount, but I'm having trouble ordering it. I think they might not ship to The US at all. I contacted their customer support, so hopefully, I will be able to order it.

"It's a MAP!" Me inside every time I see one. 😂 Curious what you think of Subterranean Press, if anything. I'm rarely tempted to spend $$$ on books, but I'm still subscribed to their newsletter so I can see the pretty books they're putting out, and sometimes you can snag good deals on dinged copies. They're currently doing a special edition of Malazan that's so exclusive only people who ordered the first book can purchase the rest, as far as I understand it.

I have the Folio Hobbit and love it.
Small pictures for chapter headers in more of a silhouette style , a map for each inner cover, and I believe 2 full art pages.
The cover was designed as children's book so it will probably never fit in with any print of LOTR. So it's definitely a love or hate print.

Ok, so Folio sent Daniel tons of free books... ? I mean on one hand I get it.. on the other I really hate this whole "this stuff is super expensive.. but free if you have a large social media following and thus already have the money to buy them"
eh, maybe I'm just a little jealous. I've always wanted a large lirbary of Folio books. And this guy just gets it for free. Meanwhile I've been doing everything I can to NOT order any Folio books because I know if I start I can't stop and now is not the time. Last time I was on their site, it was for the BOTNS and before I knew it I also had their Dune edition and a bunch of other folio books in my basket. The shipping alone was more expensive than the average special hardcover edition you can order online or buy from retail.

Based on how many Folio editions I see in used book sale situations, I’m not sure they are worth it as an investment. BUT if you wanna see your top tier favorite book treated up NICE, which let’s be honest, that’s what we’re here for, they are a great way to go. I got the Pride and Prejudice one and it slaps.

I'm glad you liked these Folio editions. I own Farseer,A Song of Ice and Fire, the two Dune books,Dracula,Jurassic Park and The Lost World, three James Bond books,so far and yes,Childhood's End. I agree, this last one is the weakest,I don't like the spine format. I personally think that the Folio editions are reasonably affordable, unlike Subterranean Press for example and they come with slipcases.

His dark materials is actually the sole reason I know of folio society. I've seen it life in a store for used books and they're so pretty.. that store asked for more than the original plus international shipment, so it was a no..
One day when I lay golden eggs or rob a bank they'll be mine.. not to read obviously, that's what I have my regular paperback and hardcover editions for

Oooooooooof, that sucks, man. As a collector of THINGS (books, games, movies, etc), one of the things I'm increasingly worried about as the years roll on is something JUST like that happening to it. For comics and games, some of it is so expensive now, I just don't think I'd be ABLE to replace it without spending an irresponsibly large pile of money, and even for the cheaper stuff like movies and books, it's just... painful. My collections bring me joy, I like having my libraries of STUFF that I like, but also... anxiety.
'F' for your fallen books, my dude.

@@meikusje If you got the money, and are willing to be in it for the long haul, then go for it. I can't speak for you or for anyone else, but every fantasy series I've read since WoT has paled in comparison, even when you factor the slog of books 8-10 into the equation. Not even the Cosmere has come close.
