There are very different views on Scooters throughout the World. I’ve lived in Thailand for 6 years. I own a Ford Ranger, Triumph Tiger XCA, a Triumph Bobber Black 1200 and a Vespa 150cc Sprint. Regardless of what other vehicles people own in Thailand, pretty much everyone has a Scooter for convenient daily use. Each of my Motorcycles get used once a week. The Vespa....everyday!!
Absolutely no stigma to scooter riding here and perfectly normal to be out on the Scooter 90% of the time whilst transferring to big bikes for group rides, distance etc.
even Harley riders here own scooters.

A scooter is a type of motorcycle. Saying a scooter is different from a motorcycle is like saying a sedan is different from a car.

@@marksavage The legal definitions are different in every country. I'm talking about the dictionary definitions. Look up Motorcycle in your dictionary. It defines it as "a two-wheeled vehicle that is powered by a motor and has no pedals". Well a scooter is a two-wheeled vehicle that is powered by a motor and has no pedals so therefore it is a Motorcycle by definition. The dictionaries have no mention of engine size or looks or uses.

I sold my Ninja 650 and purchase a Burgman 400. I turned 61 and needed something a little easier on my body. Of course you don't have the same power or taking corners at speed. But you have more storage and much more comfortable than the Ninja. As for speed I can easily keep up with traffic. I use the Burgman mainly for touring. My average ride is 80 miles or more each ride. Very happy with my scooter.

    Cracking video.
As someone who has been on scooters through my late teens, and then re-visited near my 40's, I upgraded to a cheap Chinese 125cc manual to get the feel of a geared bike and to basically learn real riding so I can prep for my test.
I couldn't believe the difference in feel between the two. The biggest for me is the chain drive on a motorbike - and I actually think I prefer the smoothness of the CVT belt drive in scooters.
That being said, being able to change the RPM's to suit your ride, and being wrapped around the tank does make you feel more involved with the machine. I 100% think I'll go back to the easy life of being a scooter rider, but for now I'm enjoying learning how to ride the good old fashioned way.

I rode a Honda vision 110cc for a year before i bought a YBR125 and taught myself. Going from scooter to bike is, as Mark said, very different when it comes to feel. When I got on the manual the first thing i noticed was how much more I was a part of the bike. Feeling the fuel tank between your legs, feeling a lot more of the engine vibration and better acceleration. IMO I feel like i'm a lot more in control than on my scooter, which is a big confidence boost. Gotta check your speed though! You'll soon realise that its a lot more fun to speed off on a manual than on a scooter.

The official classification of a moped is less than 50cc (geared or not). A scooter is a colloquial term for an automatic motorcycle.
A full licence holder can ride a 125cc on the motorway, whether a geared bike or not.
Advantages of the design of automatic motorcycles include the storage and the fact that the undercarriage is a bit more covered and with smaller displacement ones, use a belt rather than a chain. This can be better in terms of maintenance and can mean they are less prone to salt in the winter.

@@marksavage Anything particular I need to learn to go from riding a motorcycle to a scooter besides the brake and clutch differences? I'll be renting a scooter when I go to thailand with my wife in a month. I rented a scooter 14 years ago and it was sketchy as hell and I dumped it 2 times in 10 days but had no previous experience. The times I fell was first while learning how to lean and countersteer as I immediately took it to a parking lot to practice, then got cuttoff by another scooterer in the rain and grabbed the brakes too hard I assume.

Thanks for a good video from across the pond. I turned 70 last year and find myself a little more sore after I ride my Honda Shadow 750 and I'm not as strong as I once was. So I'm trying to decide if I want to transition between the Shadow and a scooter. I'm not much of a highway rider, I live in a small town and it's 5 minutes to farm country or the woods where speed limits range from 45-55 with little traffic and plenty of twisties to keep it interesting. I've got to go test drive these things to see if they're right for me or if I simply need to move down to something like a Honda Rebel 250. I think the maxi scooters like the Burgman 650 or the Tmax 500 are too much for me but I'm not sure the PCX 160 is enough. I wish there were more scooters in the 300-350 range, the only one being the Xmax 300 or something much older like the Forza. At this point in my life I'm thinking ABS is something I really ought to have and the older bikes don't always have that option. Your video has helped me to focus my attention on the actual feel of the bike on the road, especially thru turns to see how this all fleshes out. Thanks again for your video, I know it's been 4 years since you posted it but it's very timely for those of us in my situation. Cheers !

Hello Mark, great video again 👏👏👏 you have highlighted a few things that I hate on the road, drivers pulling up from side roads, even when they are staring at you in the eye but still pull out 😠😠😠 and another thing you did mentioned, when you are filtering some stupid drivers move to centre lane on purpose so you cant go through, bunch of bambaclas! 😡😡😡 There are so many drivers out there that dont actually know that you are allowed to filter in the UK (you have to be reasonable, not dangerous and most of all, use a bit of common sense, obviously! 😁) I have had this happened to me so many times and winds me up!!! Also one of my intense dislikes on the road is drivers not using the bloody indicators 😠😠😠 it really gets in my nerves because you might be overtaking vehicles and suddenly someone pulls out into your lane without warning and most probably you will be coming off your bike to avoid it, unless you are lucky enough not too!! DRIVERS please, use your indicators, it is in the vehicle for a reason, not just for Christmas!!! 😋😋 Ride safe 😀 P.S. Everyone is different when it comes to motorbikes but is my personal choice, I wouldnt take a scooter/ped for winter, for me is a geared motorbike all the way, more fun to ride, does summer or winter 👏👏👏

Good Video! I liked the commonsense comparison between scooters and motorcycles.
There is one thing about scooters or one particular scooter that you may not realize.
That scooter you have is the Bergman 400 right?
There's a big difference between that scooter and its bigger brother the Bergman 650.
The Bergman 650 has the option to use manual shifting so it lets you use the gears to slow down in different types of weather.
The 400 CC Bergman doesn't have this option at least I haven't seen one.
The 650 CC Bergman now has new competition with some of the new super scooters size wise.
I would recommend putting better headlights in the 400 because for both safety in the daytime and especially at night.
You can get better tires for scooters so they handled the weather better.
There is one distinct and major advantage a scooter has over motorcycle in one type of situation that a motorcycle can never win in.
I've never met someone who rides a motorcycle finds any enjoyment in.
That is being in Heavy downtown traffic because of shifting constantly.
I agree with you what you said regarding certain sizes of scooters are scooters not maxi scooters. I consider anything 250 CC and smaller, a scooter myself.
When you get into a 300 CC and up that I just consider them an automatic motorcycle and not as scooter and he he he he he he he he he he he is and he.
Even Honda years ago came out with a automatic motorcycle called the Hondamatic.
I don't know if you had them in Britain but it was a full on regular 400cc motorcycle except it was automatic.
The only difference to look at it was you didn't see a clutch other than that it looked exactly the same.
good luck finding the type of car you want but you might want to consider a small truck.
    I enjoyed your video.

There is more to riding scooters you develop different skill sets, trying to balance on a scooter is much harder at slow speeds. Its great when your riding a scooter but can ride a manual bike too.
