A boolean is a 1 or 0, basically a button its either pressed or its not, while a vector 1 can have any value, although it's probably only between -1 and 1 in this case, so basically, a slider where the value is set to the location of the slider.
Idk about the playstation setup but have you ever used an Index controller? Yes they may be pretty much the best around (as they have been for a long time) but their finger tracking is quite limited. It is basically a big thing of touch sensors that determine how much and where you are gripping the controller. Index controllers can only track your fingers curling in one direction. Any finger motion that is part of gripping is tracked, anything else not really. No sideway finger moving, no only the tips of your fingers moving. Index controllers are nice, better finger tracking on a controller would still be nice though.
Nimsony has a good method for movement with out controllers. It uses you relative to the play space as a joystick. When you stand at the center of your area you are stationary, If you step forward with one foot you start walking, if you step further you start running. Return to the center of your play space and you will stop moving again.

The boolean mode makes you move with constant speed if the action triggers movement, and the vector1 mode makes the speed at which you move depend on the intensity of the action. It's like buttons vs. joysticks: you can press a button, and it's either on or off. The joystick, on the other hand, can either be fully pointing in a direction, or only partway, and the further you move your joystick in a given direction, the faster you'll move.
