I would have liked to hear the Fender pickups with volume rolled back slightly on guitar to see if that evens out the distortion some. I'll see if I can find another video on those.
That was definitely a worthwhile swap, Derek. I've only played a vintage strat twice, but those pups got very close to what I remember. This video perfectly highlights the difference between the modern and vintage Fender tones. The Porter pups remove the mid-tone harshness, (or if we are being charitable, the brashness), of the Tex-Mex set. And when you play as meticulous as you did, you are rewarded with beautiful rounded, more musical tones. This is what Fender was shooting for in my '57 reissue, but didn't quite get. I think I see a Porter swap-out in my future. Cheers!
Thanks Brad, I was always a fan of the tex mex pickups and still an to some degree but the porters just have such definition, I was surprised at how much of a difference they made, I have that chimey clarity but they can be pushed through a boost to make the amp breakup but not in a gritty way, cheers!
Following your channel since your giveaway video ! Honestly your videos are just amazing and you deserve more views man. One day, you'll definitely reach the heights.
They really do like a quality product, I was smitten with the packaging before you got to the pickups and the key ring/pick holder was a nice touch. They really sounded the business too, really nice, the neck & mid combo in particular produced a lovely blues tone, (feel free to claim it was down to the artiste at this stage!)
Haha well if you insist!! it was all me! :) thanks Gareth, i'm really enjoying them, they are such quality and so well made, and the sound from them! cheers man!
Those are a nice looking and sounding set of pickups! I have a local pickup builder that I get mine from for my builds. I am a small guitar builder and like using other small shops that are doing quality work!
Oh those sound nice! I want to upgrade the pups on my cheap Epi LP, but paying the price for 1 pup that I paid for the guitar doesn't seem right to me :D I'm thinking I want to throw humbucker sized P-90s or Trons in it because it only has a sing tone & volume knob. I could go the splitting route too, though I wished someone made a wiring kit for LP's with just a single tone & volume & splitting.
Thanks for the informative video. Just so you know, Boise is pronounced Boy-see. :) That's really great you did a video about one of our great local companies.
Hey man, I love and respect you alot, I am 14 and I play the guitar too, can you please check out one of my videos and give me suggestions for improvements (which I need to do alot as I suck) but I would be really grateful for that. I don't have many good equipments so please give advice according to that if you do. Thanks alot for reading this
Hey dude, you don’t suck at all, and you don’t need good equipment, the fact that you are playing and put yourself out there is a good thing, keep going, you’re doing great!!
Just keep playing and have fun! All you need is a guitar that feels right and inspires you to play more. Your tone will evolve as your playing moves along.
Im very disappointed in the way the porters sound… I was hoping they wouldn’t sound that much better than the tex mex because the tex mex are much easier on the budget, but they sound awesome, so it looks like I’m going to be saving up a bit longer. 😂
Haha I did like the tex mex pickups and still do but they break up to early, whereas the porters sound sooo clean and clear and they break up when you want them too, more control, I have 2 sets in my guitars now (one of my latest videos were the Porter PAF humbuckers in my thinline tele) great pickups, cheers Trevin 👍
@@DerekPaulGuitar I hate strat bridge tone. Some people make it sound good. Im thinking about getting the loaded pickguard with the vintage customs in the neck and middle and going with something fun in the bridge. Im between the PAF, clear and the portertron. they all sound very different.
@@trevinpendry136 Yeah i'm the same, the bridge tone is so thin for me, i get that it works for lead in a band situation, but at hime just me playing it's far too bright, that's a good idea! Brian Porter is a really nice guy! cheers
I missed that completely didn’t I! I don’t play the neck pickup on its own so obviously it wasn’t in my mind, good spot and something for me to note in future, thanks!

Can't wait to do more swap pups vids and reviews. Great job always man!!!!
Thanks Robert, I have another one soon 🙌

Great video. Nicely filmed. Interesting comparison 👌👍

I hear ya, I upgraded my squier because I love the way it plays and I bet that kit is out there somewhere! Cheers!
Been thinking to put Tex Mex on my Squier VM Strat. This ensures my decision. Great demo!
Thanks! The tex mex will sound great on it!

I do think the Porter sounds more responsive and open. It's just that I can't afford it! 😂
@@kapalanokenta1788 I hear ya man! The tex Mex though are fantastic pickups 👍

Ah thanks! No problem, Porter make the best pickups I’ve tried, still have them in my strat and love them, cheers for the comment :)
The tex mex sounded better. And where the heck was neck? Or the tuner...
do PUs really matter ? I have an america strat but hate the tone would pickups change the sound? I like the tone your getting
They change the tone to a degree, the amp, pedals and they way you play do the rest, what don’t you like about them?
Hey bro you work me out a deal and I’ll get the tex mex pick ups you replaced out of your way?
Hey man, I’m keeping them for a future project, cheers!
7:31 noice tone.
