The holy grail for a band. Take a classic, and absolutely nail it. Make the listener listen back to the original and think, "This is actually better than the original". Note: For the bass line synth player, next weeks lesson is 'now play it with your left hand'😉 Only kidding, it was a fantastic performance all round. Thank You👍🙂
It's probably not just a coincidence that by the 80's, equipment had reached a point of diminishing returns quality wise and 24 tracks was quite common. But also, the engineers and the players had fully mastered how to make records by then. But let's not forget, Sgt. Peppers was cut on a couple of 4 track machines! However, we do have to point out that it was done by 4 guys who, with George Martin, were perhaps the greatest collaboration of talent ever to sit in a studio together. So, this might be the most important, people still played in bands and since two heads are usually better than one, 4 or 5 could be really good. We knew how to play together by then. Now, live bands are a dying breed. The technology now allows someone who is gifted at all can make records in their "living room". Some are quite good, others, oh well. Our whole society has gotten more isolated even tho most live in overcrowded cities. In short, we don't work together anymore like we used to. I hear some of these "solo" efforts and many certainly aren't bad, but just not like it was in the days when we played in bands. Having said that, I've been making my own records in my own studio since the late 80's and I love being unencumbered, but I've given up a bit, especially the camaraderie, in the process. I love my independence, but I miss my "buds"!
