- Sega's Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is an even BIGGER Pokemon Parody than the game before. Every enemy, every MAN is a Sujimon, and many of them you can catch and add to your team, and help you earn badges! In this video, we look at the complete Sujidex and the complete Sujimon Dossier and explain the meaning behind their names. A thing I do with Pokemon-like games all the time.

Gnoggin, hosted by its creator Lockstin, is a show delving into the mysteries of Pokemon! (and other games sometimes too). Explaining everything there is to explain! Why is each Pokemon given the type it has? What are their origins? What is the lore of the Pokemon world and the design inspirations? And what does it all have to do with alchemy? Let's Go find out! - Ігри
Pretty Cur may also be a play on “Pretty Cure” it is one of the largest magical girl franchises in Japan and has been airing since 2004 and continues to this day.
It 1000% is
pretty sure it is, is literally just one letter away from the series name
A Magical Girl Series who's not afraid to Punch Monsters in the face.
YESSSSSSSS PRECURE
It's also on the fact, pretty cure unlike most magical girls are specialized in Xianxia/high fantasy level martial arts than purely "the big purification spell that enemies just stare at" unlike the name suggests. So a big fight obsessed dude would be in the barely secret male demographic.
This is why I love Yakuza. Its both a serious crime drama and balls to the walls ridiculous at the same time and and it some how works.
I love jacuzzis too!
"Noblesse Obesity" is likely a pun on the concept of "noblesse oblige", essentially the idea that those _with_ privilege (nobles, royalty, etc.) should respect and act nobly towards those _without_ privilege (commoners). Just replace "oblige" with "obesity", because instead of feeling an obligation to be noble, he's just fat. And a noble.
The "jobber" in Jabber Jobber is slang for a guy who goes down easily in a fight. Particularly in professional wrestling, where he does it to make other fighters look stronger. It's also an old business word for a middleman or broker!
"Squawk Jock" also pulls from "shock jock", a radio term for a host who says offensive things on purpose to shock listeners.
About the Squawk Jocks, I would also like to point out that Crapule in french means a ruffian, which makes an (intentional?) portmanteau with Vox Crapuli
Noblesse Oblige was also the term used for having rights *over* those who don't have privileges (a result of the term getting mutated over time) and coming to refer to abusing those privileges, the worst example being the one most people point at of nobles in some countries having the right (or even the obligation in some very, very rare cases) of sleeping with the bride before the groom.
I love having Pokemon in my favorite Serious Crime Drama™
Don't forget, it's *semi* serious :) With all the looney toons stuff Kiryu and Ichiban do (clarification Yakuzer is very serious :D I love it)
It pretty much gave up on trying to be serious when the new lead protagonist thinks he's a Dragon Quest hero.
@@GoldStorm07 If Kiryu's main campaigns were Scorsese/Coppola, Kasuga is definitely more Coen Bros.
@@GoldStorm07 I love that the explanation for the games main mechanic is that the protag is schizophrenic
This flavour of April fool video is my favourite. An actual video but there's a fun twist. The worst April fools are "Highly anticipated video fakeout, and then it's 1 hour of nothing"
Thats Literally the main reason I hate April fools day
Either that or “I’M qUiitTing gUys”
Uhh is some kind of meta/non-meta April fools joke
Honestly the concept is wacky enough that it works as a joke. 😉
@@Gnogginactual jumpscare at the beginning :0
It’s a sticking to the formula yet going outside of the formula video like Umbran lumen taking about devil arms from dmc
Welcome to Like a Dragon
Just Yakuza/Like a Dragon things
I'd like to make it known that only one of the crime lords were actually into diaper play. The boss. He forced his underlings to participate beside him, which is both funnier and worse.
A few things you missed:
-Jabber Jobber: a "jobber" is someone who throws matches in boxing or wrestling for the sake of making the person they're fighting look good. In wrestling its just to sell a story, but in boxing thats part of fixing matches in illegal gambling
-Pretty Cur: a play on "Pretty Cure", a very popular magical girl anime series
-Stray Hangdog: COuld be wrong on this one but Hangdog def gives me vibes of referencing hangnails.
-Rebel Yeller: Seems like its more referencing the Billy Idol song "Rebel Yell", which is pretty popular
And the weeping archdevil is possibly a reference to a weeping angel from Dr who
The "Pretty Cure" reference fits so well because there are events where actors wear these fake anime girl heads of the characters
@@annaf8305 with his design I think it is more of Devil May Cry reference
You Could also say "New Age Hippie" could be a slight nod to EarthBound. Where there was an enemy called exactly that.
"New Age Retro Hippie", actually.
20:18
the specific kind of bag the Bag Toter carries is called an ita bag!
(ita meaning painful - painful to look at, painfully heavy to carry, and painfully expensive)
they're getting more and more popular here in the US at conventions; i even run an introductory panel at my local con about the hobby!
The way I’m kicking, screaming, crying and heaving in the corner over Lock actually covering the Sujimon from Yakuza; literally two of my favorite game franchises ever ☠️ We need to give the Yakuza English localization team their props, these names are GOLDEN and had me screamingggg all thru Y7
The color gang members are also a reference to the color themed gangs that've been a reoccuring pain in Kiryu's side since yakuza 1. There's usually a blue and white gang alongside red. They all hate each other and are rivals.
The Alola references alone make me like this series ive never heard of before. I respect it for shouting out my favorite Pokemon games
Play the yakuza games. They’re a rabbit hole of hilariously fun side quests, set in the background of a strait laced crime drama. If you ever heard of the dame da ne meme from a while back, that came from this series.
I highly recommend it as a long time fan of the franchise. Honestly kinda enjoyed that Lockstin gave the franchise some light on the channel.
@@edman9953 that seems pretty fun, I'll definitely look into them more
Yakuza is a serious video game with a deep beautiful story and intricate characters, but it’s also all this and I love it
I feel like Dancing Madman is also a reference to Dancing Mad, the final boss theme from Final Fantasy VI, especially considering the colorful feathers he wears on his head, similar to Kefka himself.
Pocket Watchman also evokes the idea of a cop being "in the pocket" of organized crime.
...nice thumbnail?
Gotta screenshot it before it’s changed.
Oh gosh was it the Crabrawler one? its one of UA-cam "we automatically generated these thumbnails for you" options.
While hilarious, its not the intended one. lol.
Pretty Cur definitely also references "Pretty Cure" or Precure as it's more commonly known, which is a long-running magical girl series that changes up its cast every year like Power Rangers/Super Sentai/Kamen Rider.
Imagine Gushing Magical Girls with minus the Lewd, & more Brawls.
27:26 I think it's based on pretty cure which is more sailor moon type stuff, pretty popular in japan.
Oh my GOD, I never thought you would cover this game, but i'm so happy you are! So for anyone who hasn't played these games, there's a running gag that the enemies look they way they do because of Ichiban's rampant imagination. But everyone in the Leauge treats people like they are in these ridiculous outfits. This means that either:
A) Everyone is normal and Ichiban still has just imagining things
B) Everyone else in the leauge has the same imagination that Ichiban does
or C) These people are actually just dressed like that.
The fact that it blurs the line so much and just never explains it is what makes it so damn funny! Also, the Sujimon menu has unqiue descriptions for the Sujimon as well. The one for Sandbagger says that the flag on his head was made by his son that he only gets to see once a month due to a divorce.
I'd say Sujimon is less Pokemon and more Dragon Quest Monsters:
- Monster taming usual enemies to your side during combat (Dragon Quest 5).
- 3v3 battles (usual Dragon Quest Monsters games fight like this).
- Some of the Sujimon/regular enemies take inspiration from various Dragon Quest enemy lines (at least the obvious ones):
1) Demolitioneer line: Trolls with some Hammerhood thrown in (they don't hit often, but when they do, they hurt like hell).
2) Dine-n-Dasher line: Night Clubber (portly, uses blunt instruments).
3) Hitman line: Bodkin Archer.
4) Military Buff line: Killing Machines (they even share the same pose).
5) Pompadork/Dancer line: Dancing Devil.
6) Outlier/Patient line: Imp with visual representation of the Mummy.
7) Crabby Sentinel/watchmen line: Golems with some Loss Leader thrown in.
8) Slugger line: Cyclops (both are known to be difficult enemies with great bulk and penchant for critical hits).
9) Death Merchant/Arms Buff and (American) Salesmen line: Demon-at-Arms (although the Salesmen adds Wrecktor in the mix).
10) Pseudotrash line: Cannibox (generally mimics).
11) Dance Dictator line: Hooper Duper (Dancing Madman variant is a reference to FFVI's "Dancing Mad" theme)
12) Baggage Claimer line: Goodybag.
13) Wild Hog line: Restless Armor.
14) Sham Man Shaman line: Meowgician.
15) Street Scrapper line: Knight Errant.
16) Bronze Agent line: Living Statue (they both have "ambush" in mind).
17) Smokestacker line: Walking Corpse.
18) Blackmailer Daemon: Hoodlum (lore-wise, they share the same MO).
19) Dump Chump line: Jargon.
That's all I got. Any other subtle Dragon Quests I've might've missed?
Sujimon sounds like a top-tier Pokémon inspired game.😺
Sujimons solos palworld🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️
Happy April Fool's Day Lockstin! Honestly, the Like a Dragon games are not my type of game. (I'm not really into the whole crime drama thing.) but I had no idea this was even a thing! Fascinating they added this and it's just downright hilarious.
The whole crime drama thing is the side content. The mini-games are what you buy the games for.
You neglected to mention for Biting Barker the expression "bark is worse than his bite".
These games are literally the greatest thing ever thought of. Literally several genres mixed into a single entity. But it WORKS!
i loved the Sujimon minigame in 8, it’s one of the most fun minigames in the series along with Dondoko Island
8 in general was so good, today RGG Studios announced auditions for 9 so i can’t wait to see how the turn based evolves. hope we see Ichiban go to Korea fr
Pompadork is the perfect name! If I find another shiny Squakabilly, I'm totally calling it that.😂
I don't care if it's april fools, Yakuza/Like A Dragon is genuinely really good and shoutout to L&G for even doing a video on it cause the Sujimon are so silly.
26:55 Jobber is also a term in fighting, mostly wrestling, as a rookie or novice that's sent out to lose against a fighter with higher prestige.
27:25 Pretty Cur is a reference to Pretty Cure, the seasonal magical girl series that's one of the most popular in Japan aside from Sailor Moon
Lockstin making a completely normal video that nobody asked for but everybody needed.
17:00 I would also like to add that the New Aged Hippie might be a reference to the "New Age Retro Hippie" from EarthBound/Mother 2.
New aged hippie is probably a reference to the hippie and new age retro hippie enemies from Mother 1 and 2 or Earthbound 0 and Earthbound.
17:04 that might also be a reference to the new age retro hippie from earthbound
An additional note on Pretty Cur, there's an anime series by the name "Pretty cure" which I about magical girls.
16:28 With that color scheme, is the Dark Sweeper also a Toxic Avenger reference?
24:55 - The Death's Head is also a popular military symbol from later 19th and early 20th century Europe. Made all the more infamous by the Totenkopf from the Third Reich.
Ooh my gods, finally someone posting an actual video today 😭
Knowing lockstin this was not intended to be an April fools joke and just kinda happened to come out now
Great video!
Also Pretty Cur is a reference to the Japanese magical girl franchise Pretty Cure, just without the "e"
YESSSS I ADVOCATED FOR A VIDEO ON THIS EVER SINCE THE FIRST LIKE A DRAGON!!!
I’m going with the assumption someone else has already said this but jabber jobber also could be related to jobbers: “a professional wrestling term used to describe a wrestler who is routinely defeated by main eventers, mid-carders, or low-carders” from Wikipedia.
Pretty Cur is also a play on a very popular magical girl anime Pretty cure
Crafter Burner might also be a reference to After Burner, another Sega franchise.
Pretty cur is also a reference to the magical girl series pretty cure!
I wanna be, pretty great
Like a handful of people areee
So I'll beat all these inmates
Capture it with chocolate baaaars
I will travel across Japan (Hawaii!),
Searching with my eyesss
Take down King, cause I'm the man (aaiieee!)
And give the gacha a tryyyy
Sujimon!
Lmfaoooooooo the “aaiieeee” sent me to God☠️☠️☠️
@@jaxjaxattaxx I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)
I like when people on UA-cam do a normal video but on something silly for the 1st of April instead of the typical "my last video cuz today I retired" or "a true fact not at all click bait"
16:24 So like Poison Ivy, Vaccine Man, Planetina after she went insane (basically what would happen if Captain Planet could be summoned without the Heart Ring. Gaia even mentions that the Heart Ring is the most important one. Now you know why she said that. ) and basically every other eco-terrorist supervillain.
Pretty Cur is most likely a reference to the pretty cure Franchise
I think the kiwami legendary can be a refrence to super sentai where each member are named after their color
24:59 I didn’t know James A Janice was a criminal in the Yakuza series…
I’ll be honest, all of these names are literally just like the ones I made up in grade school to battle my made-up heroes.
My own examples are Blackjack, Long-Clawed Vandal, E. Racer, Rave Robber, High Jack, Pack Brat, Photo Bomber, Knockoff, Wrecking Brawl, High Roller, Strongarms, Boom Boxer, etc.
Also sujimon is a pun itself it’s based on the Japanese words suji no mono, which describes yakuza thugs and due to the mon part is where they got the Pokémon reference
Pompadork sounds like a fan-created evolution for Quaxly
wizard is generally a nickname for someone whos good at something (like pinball) but in this context it is used to describe programmers alot
i think i'm just happy that i can go around collecting a bunch of big buff muscle dudes of my very own 🥵
Finally some good content.
Also go play Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth if you’re old enough. It’s really really really good and possibly Game of the Year for 2024.
Kiryu and/or Ichiban should've been in Smash
This... this exists. I have some friends who need to know about this ASAP
Sandbagging also means making something not fun to do.
The fact that you did THIS on April Fools Day.......Genius XD because honestly this franchise is too weird and wild NOT to be a joke pffft
I love that the Batterer Out Of Hell has Megaton Hammer, which is a really funny bit of accidental foreshadowing
27:26
It's also a reference to the 20 year long going magical girl series Pretty Cure.
Only 2 seasons have ever been localized to America but they were under the name Glitter Force.
Next you gotta explain every Chinpokomon from South Park
14:55 Serious sam references? Yes PLEASE!
You forgot to mention how you evolve your sujimon by feeding them to eachother!
Lockstin, I know it's april fools but this video popped up in my notifications and my family saw rhe thumbnail before it started playing on tv and I may or may not be grounded
I love that you covered these. Yakuza comes up with the best mini games.
this opens the door to "describing every persona/demon in persona and SMT"
I haven't watched the video yet but I'm just expecting some insanity to unfold
Bro I just started playing Yakuza 0 Recently and uh Hmm this is Crazy
You missed the obvious reference in pretty cur to the magical girl anime pretty cure
finally the explanation i've been waiting for.
Sandbag is also also a verb that means to coerce or intimidate.
Automoburglar is my favorite name, it makes me laugh every time I hear it.
14:33 THE POKEMON
38:52 "Banging the drum" is also a metaphor, albeit one that doesn't seem relevant.
I know this is supposed to be a joke but I was unironically looking for something like this
18:45 Why does he have a legally distinct Hehachi haircut?
Dancing Madman is a FF6 reference to the final boss theme as well, Dancing Mad.
The men do what?!
its peak!
(thank you for covering yakuza)
another great video! i love these episodes that talk about other creature collecting games. if you're interested, maybe you could do an episode explaining the designs of Yo-Kai Watch?
38:24 So in other words they're a sentai? Because that naming scheme seems to be based on one commonly used in Super Sentai and media influenced by it.
The Dark Sweeper's design has to be a reference to the NES Jason design
So I always thought PseudoTrash was inspired by traditional mimics in RPGs and the kappa with the hair cut
I dunno about the Kappa part, although it's certainly possible, but the mimic part is absolutely true
This feels like abfever dream of a game
You have good taste my dude.
7:58 Wait, that's an actual thing? That one joke I saw that one joke in Disney Hercules where the sundial watch guy in Thebes was all "wanna buy a sundial?" , the one scene in Robots where the watches were all "Don't buy us, we're fakes!" and the one time on Freakazoid where Waylon Jeepers was all "you want to see something strange and mystical?" was based on an actual thing?
I'm more impressed with how many Alola region references they made in this ONE minigame about knock-off prisoner Pokémon.
Like it's not some cheap skit, they *actually* referenced the game like a fan would.
27:27 That's probably also referencing the long-running Pretty Cure franchise
fun Birthday Joke, btw 😉
i cannot understate how amazing "hard sellmate" is as a name you can iterpret it like 10 different ways and all of it is correct
Pretty sure King Joe was an ultraman reference by name
it's always interesting seeing a lockstin thumbnail in my recommended once in a blue moon and it's something like... _this..._
Best day for you to make this one.
This...makes me kind of want to play these, lol. I've been interested, but not quite enough. That might change now, lol.
I love this enemies intro text it kills be every time I see it. 6:51
LOVE IT!!
I'm so glad they're now in Hawai'i. Waikiki is so accurate
If GTA was Pokemon
I'm going to lose sleep thinking about how he went "self-proclaimed w*tch".
7:40 Why are they so aware, hold on
