Solid video, agree with them all. I would have added Rift S and every Pimax below the Crystal but maybe you regarded them as too obsolete to even discount now, Rift S hasn't been sold for a few years after all.
I think for anyone buying a HMD now, the Quest 3, Quest Pro, Bigscreen Beyond and the Crystal are the only viable options currently on the market. Quest 3 is the better choice for probably 90 percent of people.

Quest 3 is the VR headset choice for me. I use it primarily for iRacing and Flight Simulator. Love the wireless capability via Virtual Desktop, plus the pancake lenses which offer a huge sweet spot edge to edge.

I've got a HTC Vive Pro 2. I can confirm it does get very hot. I've been happy with it but I don't use VR very often. Lots of screen door effect though. Looking forward to getting something with better clarity. You'd have to have rocks in your head to buy one new in 2024. I'm holding out for the Pimax 12K.

Good discussion. I have a Vive Pro 2 and absolutely love the decision buying it 20 months ago. Given my priorities are resolution, FOV, flawless trackig with index controllers and wireless - it's been a great choice for my head shape and I have no problems with clarity/sweet spot. It was my perfect choice to get me to the next generation. It's ok we don't agree, and I am not a simmer

Thanks bud for the honest information! I'm going to be a fence sitter once again and not make any buying decision for VR just yet. After this partial PC upgrade, I just want to see what i can improve, (if any) using my trusty G2 for just awhile longer. The quest 3 was what I considered but I keep reading both positive and negative comments concerning it when used with MSFS2020. Maybe some software updates will alleviates this with a little more time so i'll take a wait and see approach. Also the base price sounded like an easy buy, HOWEVER: Everyone recommends must buy additions adding more $$$$$, not a mid range price anymore, LOL. (Thanks to runaway inflation; Mid range isn't $500 anymore like what I had in mind, it's more like $1K; OUCH!

So many flight sim youtubers pushing Pimax and I can say after using the 8k for a while I had to send it back. Nearly all Pimax reviewers avoid talking about the warping you get when moving your head in the cockpit. It's a complete emersion killer and you can still see a small amount of screen door. I went back to the G2 and was relieved to be using it again.. not perfect but way better than the Pimax.

    • @VRFlightSimGuy

There is no SDE in the Crystal at all and distortions are a non issue. Unless you are referring that to the 8K, which I've never recommended on the channel. The 8KX however, is pretty good now, it's just taken Pimax way too long to get there.

4:50 A quick look at pricing shows the Pico 4 is between 100 to 200 USD more than the Quest 2. They don't have price parity. At that price, you might as well just go for the Quest 3 if you wanted to be in the meta eco system.

As for the Reverb G2 cable, I have a hook screwed into the wall above my head height. And the cable rolled up and looped onto that. The two ends of cable hang down to the little power box and the headset. The headset itself lays on top a box (actually my printer). The headset is picked up for use, or to set off from the printer, by using the top strap of the headset for a handle. This setup keeps pressure off of the cables so they won't break the "wires" inside the cable wrap.

Like how I use to tell Quest 2 reviewers how bad the Quest 2 was compared to the G2. They would say I was crazy and the Quest 2 was way better, but they never tried the G2. Even the Quest 3 is not as good as the G2. The Q3 is very close to the G2, but if you are going to spend the money you might as well go with the Varjo Aero. My friend let me try out the Q3 and the lenses are amazing, but the clarity is still not there. After he got all the upgrades he was out almost $800.

    @jackr.749 8 місяців тому +6

The unfortunate part is HTC does it's own thing and never seems to listen or care about what it's customer base says, HTC could be a amazing competitor in the VR market but instead are the laughing stock so agreed, stay away from HTC HMDs.
As for the DPVR E4, never tried one, but it only having one display panel and fresnel optics doesn't peak any curiosity here.
The Quest-2 is borderline, it has good display with good fresnel optics, but I would look for a used one to keep things cheap, my guess is this Quest-Lite is not going to be very good, too many compromises to keep costs down, my guess, it'll be borderline better than the Quest-2 if at all.
The Index, I have one, love the comfort but that's about it, it's resolution wasn't great at launch, 2 other HMDs had that resolution (Vive Pro and Samsung Odyssey), the stacked optics give a nice FOV but the glare and god ray level are through the roof. A modernized Index 2 could be a contender, but that never seems to happen.
Reverb G2...... Hmmmmm, this is a tough one, I find my G2v2 to be clearer (no compression) than my Quest-3, the biggest mistake HP made with the G2 was making it a WMR headset instead of a true SteamVR HMD (lighthouses), considering they had a collaboration with Valve in it's design.
Agreed, the G2 is getting dated and WMR no longer being supported makes it a iffy proposition to buy new, but a used one on the cheap still makes for a great simming HMD. :)
I have to admit, I do NOT like the way VR is heading, these stand alone HMDs are nice but for PCVR offer compression, so those great displays and optics aren't giving as good a image as if it were a true PCVR HMD directly connected to a GPU's Display Port.
And the ones that are true PCVR HMDs are priced out of the average Joe's budget (Aero, Crystal, Beyond, etc).
We all need something like a modernized G2, SteamVR based, high quality pancake optics and so on but at a affordable price point for the average user. Think that will ever happen? I don't. :(

      @VRFlightSimGuy  8 місяців тому +1

@@VRFlightSimGuy So far, all rumors are the "Lite" optics will be Fresnel not pancake to keep costs down. :(

I would say anything Before Quest 3 and Bigscreen Beyond is not worth buying. Especially since we are in 2024 and new headsets are coming out. People should really be going for newer generational headsets in this year. Last Gen will be discontinued shortly. We have made so many newer technological jumps since last generation VR headsets. This is coming from a man who is still using the OG 2016 HTC Vive setup and Vive Tracker 1.0 and base stations 1.0. I am looking to upgrade much later this year. I would say the next 8 months I am willing to wait for all the headsets to be announced and released. I might even upgrade in 2025 depending on announcements. As for the Apple Vision Pro. I feel like it is meant to fail. I also feel like the Apple Vision pro has a goal to show the industry what the vision of VR\AR\XR should be and not what it currently is. Apple is usually a trend setter. So maybe in the next two generations of VR headsets. We may see similar upgrades to what Apple has delivered so far. On top of everything I have said. VR in its current state is really fragile. These companies do need profits. So, buy what you can now or save your money for next Generational purchase. I would recommend the latter.
Edit: If you are wondering why I have not made any upgrades. It is because there has been nothing worth upgrading too as of yet. Yes, 2016 HTC Vive video is okay for my needs. Yes, Headset does still get some software upgrades. **Actually, had one a few nights ago**. I was hoping that HTC would take their heads out of their asses and actually make a proper sequel to the 2016 headset. It is just that good when it comes to durability. Would like to see the headset size shrink to something like the Bigscreen Beyond.

The index can wake the base stations and put them to sleep via bluetooth. Obviously it is nicely integrated into steam and it just switches off. Also, never thought I'd say this but: the Aero doesn't switch off. Even Varjo says to just unplug it. Yo my man... how hard is it to program it to switch off? So I found some smart plugs and put those on the base stations and the headset.

I still love the Aero even though I bought it just a month before that price drop (although still on deal so price wasn't too bad). That was coming from the G2. There are a couple of things I wish I knew beforehand if only for it not to be a surprise. The stereo overlap on the Aero is poor, on my eyes at least, Theres a pronounced inverted V to the left of my vision when in it. My brain mostly tunes it out but still. Secondly the view is restricted. I use it primarily for racing simulators so it kind of has a realism there in that you'd be wearing a helmet that would restrict the view a little anyway but I'd definitely like something wider both horizontally and vertically then I'd consider switching to VR for MSFS too.
I've not tried the Pimax so I can't comment but it was that or the Aero when I upgraded. We often have younger family members using the headset and I was concerned by the bulk of the Crystal as well as Pimax's reputation. By comparison I've twice had a couple of set up issues related to Aero and Varjo have always responded within 24 hours and stayed with me until I get it sorted. On a i7-12600k with a 3090 (can't find a decent priced 4090 if I wanted one) I can get 90fps locked in Assetto Corsa and rFactor2 with excellent visuals almost as good as my 4k screen. So I feel the combination of everything just works and I probably won't feel an urge to change until something breaks, or Varjo release a new version of the Aero with better stereo overlap and a much wider FOV

I would have to disagree with you on HTC, but only on the HTC Vive XR Elite. I can't speak to any other HTC headset. I own two VR headsets, the HTC Vive XR Elite and the Pimax Crystal and I have to say I prefer the XR Elite over the Crystal if I could only have one. Here is my reasoning. The XR is very light and well balanced, very comfortable to wear with none of the heating issues you mentioned for other HTC headsets. The XR's stand alone features are very good and the MR part is what really surprised me. It's not perfect and I'm not going to try and argue that it has better image quality than the Crystal because it does not. The Crystal has a bigger better image but it comes at a large cost. The Crystal is heavy, very heavy and very poorly balanced as it is very front heavy. Unlike the XR it's passthrough cameras are black and white instead of color so MR isn't even a thing with the Crystal. Speaking of stand alone the Crystal is an absolute joke in stand alone. There's no software available for stand alone and what few software titles there are all but one free app must be purchased, unlike the XR which came with numerous free apps. Additionally the XR has a huge advantage when it comes to just connecting it to a system. The XR can connect over wifi, which allows connecting an external battery pack for really long VR sessions. Or you can connect via USB C. The Crystal requires a DVI port and two USB ports to connect over a rather janky hub Pimax supplies. HTC keeps rolling out optional upgrades with their best in class body trackers and now releasing the eye and face tracking module for the XR. Did I mention the XR is very light and small and is very easy to travel with as well? In the end everyone's use case and opinions are going to be different this is just my experience.

Love your channel and your videos, thank you so much for all your work mate.
I'm personally still using the Reverb G2 for sim games and will keep using it until either the wmr support ends or (hopefully) we'll get a new HMD from Valve in the next 2 years (I'm also considering Pimax Crystal and Bigscreen Beyond but holding off for now since I just upgraded to an RTX4090 high end PC and don't have the funds right now after that lol) .
Regarding the Quest 3 lite (and I apologise if this has been mentioned before): while not officially confirmed by Meta yet, it's very VERY likely it will have Fresnel Lenses. I'm basing this on articles by UploadVR, Road2VR, some other outlets and my personal correspondences with f.ex. David Heaney from UploadVR. And it makes sense budget wise for Meta to not use Pancake lenses for a 200-300$ HMD, especially since they will use the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2.
We'll see soon I guess but sadly I'm not very optimistic that the Q3Lite will have pancake lenses. If it had (or it does for 100$ more) I'd buy that in an instant.

    • @haltux

@@sirgriffinman I have an RTX 3080 and I am very, very far from being able to play Flight Simulator on my G2 with optimal clarity, even if I set details to minimum. To keep the game smooth enough I need to be agressive on DLSS while not pushing too much upscaling at the same time, while on a top notch GPU I could set the upscaling much higher and set DLSS lower or no DLSS at all. The upscaling in particular makes a world of difference. So basically the resolution of the G2 if you have "only" an RTX 3080 is not that usefull because your GPU can't use it to its actual capability.

It may be the best image for simulation but you're paying both literally and in terms of comfort for a decision by Pimax to try and target the standalone players. I have Pico 4 and i like to play Automobilista 2 in vr, which is the best simracing for VR. The clarity and colors in this game is so good with Pico 4. I think with Varjo or Pimax this game will looks like im playing in a 4k monitor.

@@VRFlightSimGuy Yes, the DP E4 is new, thats right. About the Crystal, I get 38-44, depending on weather and terrain (cities, etc). Settings turned wap up, everything on Ultra or High. I run it without Smart Smoothing. Do you get SS to work? When I enable it I am down to 35-36 FPS. I thought I would get 72 FPS, but no. 🤷‍♂️
I am not really sure if the eyetracking is working properly. When I do the «circle test» in Pimax Play, the dots sometimes react, and sometimes they don’t…. I actually render through Steam VR, I find the picture to be more natural then using Pimax XR an OXRT.
I have tried native resolution, (had to turn settings way down) but I didn’t really notice much difference from 80%, so I keep it at 80%, and can then turn up settings.

@@arride4590 Well, I don’t think you can expect «4K monitor quality» in any VR headset, but yes, its getting better. I started with Oculus Rift back in the days, and the improvement has been HUGE!!!! 👍

Don’t listen to VR Flight Sim Guy. He bandwagons vr headset manufacturers and pushes their product to line his own pockets… couple of months he was dissing Pimax and Meta earlier last year. Now, he making videos and post almost every day, talking about the color accuracy and how beautiful things are when he knows he said that last year already. The truth is don’t do anything this guy recommends because he’s not in it for your interest. His perspective is totally different because he’s tried everything, so how could you advise people who haven’t. We don’t have the same reference points, so why are you bothering telling us how every headsets are?? just say that you’re getting paid for us to purchase through your link.

I think everything he said makes sense. I have G2 and I already have similar opinion about what headset to buy.

The fact that he has tried every headset is precisely what makes him the right guy to advise people on what is best, duh.
