The French Canadian tap dancing is similar too. Way back in the olden days, the English would ban dancing in many places they had invaded so the Scots and the Irish would only move their feet when dancing so as not to be detected by the English patrols. Their hands moved slightly as if one was having a normal conversation. Of course the window ledges were higher as well.

@@alicemilne1444 Ah! So here we are a t cross purposes..... I could argue that All dancing is step dancing... well... we'll omit the twist and the shake etc... because dancers take steps. I was reacting to the comment made by @billybrand that the English banned dancing etc. I was not claiming that the English gave the world any of the forms of dance that you mention... however where ever the English went and settled then their styles (not styles) of stepping went with them and were planted by them.... In some cases these dances evolved/changed.... but they can still trace their origins back to England. I must get my wife, the clog dancer in the family to watch this video.... no doubt she will recognise steps that occur in English traditions just as she recognises Clog steps in Bill Robinson's dancing..... I hope that we can agree that no matter what the style we enjoy these dances....
