One thing to love is how you artist parents are inviting and respecting your daughter plus her husband. I truly love the family values you have and thank you for all the wonderful contend even noobs in Japan can learn from so much!
I am 72 years old and I have been painting for decades I have used different medium including Watercolor, Acrylics, Oils, Pencil, and inks. I do all sorts of paintings landscapes, seascapes portraits and action paintings. I also like to paint animals of many kinds, and Children playing.
I am so happy that I found Milan Art Mastery Program. I am currently in weeks 2 & 3 and have already learned so much. I do all of the activities and I’m gaining confidence in my abilities. Thank you for this opportunity for learning & creating. I am looking forward to the rest of this artistic voyage.
I'm 55 with a formal education. I've snooped around some, and over the years randomly checked out teachers online and so far, this is the single best video I've seen for people getting started with a serious painters education. I couldn't agree more with what you teach on colors and I think starting out with oil and maybe later getting into acrylics teaches you SO much more about how color behaves, it's properties and variations, than like so many, just goimg for acrylic paint. I see talented painters who clearly never got the memo, and whilst they have the language, they don't have the choice of vocabulary andnthe nuance and actual basic structures that involves and clearly it's from lack of experience working with oil (or true pigmented watercolor), yet they're teaching. I don't blame them, It just bugs me that people who call themselves professional artists dont even understand the terminology of cool and warm color properly. You can't build properly if you don't have the basic building blocks, it will always lack something. There's nothing at all wrong with being autodidact. Any good art college will expect you to work individually and independently learning by constant practice, no teacher hovering over your shoulder. But to get there you need the basic tools and understanding of the material, of optics, of proportion and planes. Of seeing beyond what you think you're looking at. What you're teaching is really important from the get-go. I'd add that working with two or three canvases or papers simultaneously helps you learn fast, as well as putting your canvas on the floor and painting from all different directions is really helpful in developing your eye, breaking down preconceptions regarding subjectmatter (anatomy for instance) as well as what is beautiful in paint on canvas composition, and frees you from alot of struggles. If you get stuck, turn your canvas upside down. The imbalance will reveal itself, correct it! Great paintings work from any angle. I find using 100% natural liquid soap works best to clean bristles yet keep them from drying out. Some types of dishsoaps dry out brushes due to certain additives to degrease. Oil cleans oil, fat cleans fat more effectively without damage to natural hair brushes (I use hog hair). The liquid soap I use is made for all wood and cleaning, ecologocal and made from pine sap, and very cheap. Works to clean and condition wood floors etc. Castille or Marseille soap or solid 100% olive oil soap it perfect too. I'm going to look into your citrus thinner. I've heard of it but never tried it, but ditching the turps and solvents entirely would be exellent. I'm sure you're teaching helps alot of people, and I hope they find you amongst all the lesser tutorials and teachers out here. Lovely to see family teaching and painting together although I'm sure you both have your own style. What a great relationship to have! 👍👍💕
Thank you so much for your thoughtful and detailed comment! It's wonderful to hear that you've found this video to be the best resource for starting a serious painter's education. I completely agree with your perspective on the importance of understanding colors and the benefits of beginning with oil paints before transitioning to acrylics. Having a solid foundation in oil painting helps develop a deeper understanding of color behavior, properties, and variations. I understand your concern about some talented painters lacking the vocabulary and nuance that comes from working with oil or pigmented watercolor. It's true that having a strong grasp of the basics, such as cool and warm colors, is essential for building a solid artistic practice. Without those fundamental building blocks, something will always be missing from their work. Your insights on being self-taught are valuable. While working independently is a crucial aspect of artistic development, it's crucial to have the necessary tools and material understanding. Optics, proportion, planes, and the ability to see beyond what you think you're looking at are all important skills that can be honed through practice. I appreciate your additional tips, such as working on multiple canvases or papers simultaneously, painting from different directions, and even turning the canvas upside down when stuck. These techniques can indeed help artists learn faster, break down preconceptions, and develop a stronger eye for composition and subject matter. Thank you for sharing your preferred method of cleaning brushes using natural liquid soap. It's great to know that 100% natural liquid soap made from pine sap or olive oil soap works well to clean and condition hog hair brushes. I'm sure other artists will find this information helpful. Lastly, I'm glad you're considering trying out the citrus thinner. It can be a fantastic alternative to traditional turpentine and solvents, providing a safer and more environmentally friendly option for artists. I hope you find it beneficial in your artistic practice. Once again, thank you for taking the time to express your thoughts and share your experiences. It's truly heartwarming to see family members teaching and painting together, fostering a great relationship through art. I'm grateful that you've found value in this teaching, and I hope it continues to help you and many others on their artistic journeys. Keep up the fantastic work, and may your passion for art always shine through! 👍👍💕
I just joined the Art Social platform this afternoon and have been binge watching videos all day long. And I literally learned so much from these two comments alone!!! Thank you to both of you for your detailed and thoughtful insights. 💜💜💜💜
We're so glad that you loved it! You should check out our upcoming workshop tomorrow! It's brand new and it'll be even better than this workshop, guaranteed. artsocial.com/workshop
You ladies are amazing! Thank you so much for your time and valuable knowledge. I have one remark on the copy-write information. I read the other day that the photographer who took a very famous photo of Miles Davis is suing a well-known entertainer for having his exact photo replicated as a tattoo on this gal. Not sure of the outcome yet. I am not a lawyer, but I think the law says if a source image is changed a certain percentage, then it’s ok to use. Ethically, you are correct. It is very very wrong to copy a source verbatim in order to make money off that. You could have a case if someone took one of your paintings and put it on furniture to sell. Absolutely! Again, I LOVED this class and I am so happy to have found you! 🙏❤️
Elli and Dimitra are not only so beautiful but inspirational and great teachers I learned so much. Just found this video and I was ready to understand it .Thanks so much
This class is so thorough, and the delivery is so personable, I feel like I’m in the classroom with you. Love the way you two work together. Just, thank you so much! Can’t wait to do more classes with you!
Hi Im from Miami, Fl. Loved to watch your video. Planning to start the Mastery program in January 2024. I'm 58 y/o and I'm a nurse, but art and dogs have always been my love. I am a self taught artist since 2015, but I want to strengthen my knowledge and skill. Hopefully I can find my voice/style. Very excited to start. Also, I wanted to mention how beautiful the relationship b/w you and your daughter is. So precious that you guys can work on a painting together.
I have learned more about painting from you than from any art college painting course I ever took! How I wish I found you years ago. Thank you!!! ❤ Shirley
Working together with a teenager. WOW I really enjoyed the video. I need to start loosing up. Very fun watching you work together. The good girl paints while the other pouts. LOL Both of your daughters are beautiful. Your very lucky.
Just found you ..watching from England …I have always drawn with competence, however good a mucking it up with paint😱 I am 76, this is the best help that have found …as a mother of 5 daughters,I love that you work together so affably 👍 Thank you gorgeous ladies ♥️
I'm so grateful that I found you (4 years later ). Thank you for the amazing tips. I am learning oils and this is extremely helpful. You have been so inspirational and helpful!
I am returning to painting after years away, and I have lost the vision in one eye in the interim, so I have to totally revamp skills, try to remember everything I forgot, and this video is VERY helpful. I don't know that I will be able to return to the progress point I had reached when I have TWO eyes instead of one. I think I have to just keep a fresh mind and start all over again. I'm pretty sure it's all going to look a lot different than what I produced before.
They explain everything well and a beautiful team, in a practical way and totally within reach is a class of plastic arts. A huge hug and keep it up, many many many thanks. 🧑🎓👨🎓👩🎓🧑🏫👨🏫👩🏫
Been watching your videos all morning and I’ve learned so much, mostly that I’m doing everything wrong lol, but that’s good because I’ve been feeling so stuck with my work lately. My mom and I sometimes work on the same painting at the same time and it’s pretty fun. Thanks for sharing so much knowledge!
Thank you for your comment! I'm thrilled to hear that you've been watching my videos and that they've been helpful in your artistic journey. Sometimes, realizing that there are things we've been doing "wrong" can actually be a great opportunity for growth and improvement. It's all part of the learning process, and I'm glad you have a positive mindset about it. Working on the same painting with your mom sounds like such a wonderful and enjoyable experience. Collaborating on artwork can bring a unique dynamic to the creative process and create special memories together. Cherish those moments!

I wish I could take classes anywhere but UA-cam is unfortunately my teacher..but videos like these are SO helpful! I just saw another video (more recent because she ((daughter) just had a baby she said🎉)) and it was also SO helpful! I just found out her name, trying to find her page that she run on her own stuff thank you for videos like these
Very useful and helpful video. Love the explanation of the warms vs cools. Also well demonstrated. I teach oil painting at our Center here in Charlottesville and it's one of those concepts that people have a hard time grasping sometimes due to former teaching that orange is warm, blue is cool. Well, which orange, which blue! There are warms and cools of different primaries and it is foundational to what I teach. What I love about what you do is your expressive use of brush stroke, color, and intentionality in your expressiveness. So much good here, I shared it with my students. I'm a member of Milan Institute and am just starting to tap into the amazing set of resources you guys have. Well done!
Just a little hint for watchers from Austria or Germany: The copyright rules are completely different here. Taking a photo and painting it 1:1 would be a copyright infringement. You are allowed to use a photo as loose reference and evolve your own artwork around of the used element but aren't allowed to just paint everything what you see on this photo.
Just a little warning for US watchers, too: it is the same here in US because we also joined the Berne Convention which standardizes copyright law among its 181 member countries around the world. My understanding (according to a legal copyright class I took in college) is that you cannot copy a photo as a painting and get away with it. Google the Sheperd Fairey/Obama Hope poster case which resulted in a conviction for Fairey with fines and community service paid by him because he copied a photograph directly. The person who copied your art and put it on furniture broke the law, too.
You also have at least one watcher from India, me. Thank you so much. Love your work , and the way you are teaching... Thank you so much. Very valuable lesson you have shred here... Im definitely subscribing to yiur channel . And will jeep revisiting..
I’m incredibly happy to find you. I couldn’t remember your names I’ve looked for 3 1/2 hours to find you- both. I’m hoping to stay with you as long as you will let me. You are both phenomenally, impressive and fantastic teachers. I’ve only got to watch a piece of one of your shows, and I fell in love. Finally finally finally I found someone that can speak to me, and I can listen and understand without being it in a panic thank you thank you
The drawing transfer to the canvas is perfect. Have you done it applying grid lines ? Please give a lesson on portrait outline transfer to canvas , the different ways if doing it
Really loved watching you. I never took art just watched Bob Ross for years and did some of his paintings. Then I did met an artist Jerry Kucera and he taught me how to paint landscapes. I went to seminars when they came to town. Then I bought a Cardigan Welsh Corgi and started to show him and others in Conformation, and now am back to painting at age 85. I have done a few portraits one with a live model, her father wanted it, said it looked very much like her. So now, you have so much to give but I really like landscapes. Do you teach that as well?
Wonderful video! Very informative and inspiring, especially liked the part about warm and cool colours and how to use them in a portrait and lots of other topics as well. Learned a lot! Thank you so much for sharing this video!
I just noticed that I was unsubscribed to your channel! I've been a subscriber of yours for several years now. I had periodically checked because you had mentioned that they were doing that to you. I'm glad I noticed that! I resubscribed❤😊
i cant believe this is free. thank you so much for being generous😊😊😊 wanted to sign up for your master class. but its closed hope i can join the next batch
Just subscribed tonight hoping I could learn some new techniques since I have just started doing abstracts. Cannot wait until I get to try some of what you teach. From Texas!

The copyright law in the UK is different you cannot use an artist image and reproduce it on furniture, merchandise or print. 😅

Yes ill sign up with you guys. Ill have to get used to this style.
You are all so beautiful. You are a beautiful family.
you both are great teachers!
I just noticed that I was unsubscribed to your channel! I've been a subscriber of yours for several years now. I had periodically checked because you had mentioned that they were doing that to you. I'm glad I noticed that! I resubscribed❤😊
I believe burnt umber and ultramarine blue make the best black. I use brown only for that instead of using black
