- I was recently given a Canon FTb 35mm SLR camera as a gift. Without knowing how (or if) it worked, I took it out and shot two rolls of Tri-X. Here are my thoughts on the camera, as well as some of my results.

Hey Erik. Great camera. Just an FYI when you get the camera battery for it keep in mind that the built in meter on these is basically a spot meter which makes it different then most Canon cameras of the time. It was actually a higher end model and what now would be called "prosumer" and was used by a fair number of photojournalist who did not need all the fancy accesories but wanted a good camera. The older Canon mount you are thinking of is the FL lenses. I have the updated QL version with the Canon quick load feature which is great.
As for the lens it is definitely not supposed to have a loose front element like that and I have never seen that. Sounds like it was defective or was beat pretty good. You could get it cleaned and fixed but it would probably cost more then the value of both the camera and the lens combined. The 50mm 1.8 is dirt cheap and you can get them anywhere for between 20-40 dollars. It is a great lens and can produce some fabulous images. I even got some work based on pictures taken with that lens. I have both the 1.4 and 1.8 50mm lenses and I recommend both. Canon even made a F 1.2 FL lens that works on these cameras but they are hard to find and crazy expensive.
Hello ,I'm thinking F1.4 and F1.8 which one do you suggest? thank you
Hey Erik, fun to see the photos of downtown Buffalo. I moved to Buffalo from Chicago, in 1979 to work on the restoration of the Sheas Buffalo Theatre. At that time, downtown was a pretty sad collection of vacant buildings, but the Sheas spurred a huge renovation, in the area! I was there until 1981, and have many fond memories, and met many wonderful people. Thanks!
I think the photos are pretty decent......
+Donald Lampert thanks for the kind words, Donald. I love and miss Buffalo. If you haven't been there since the 80s, you should really go see what the city has become.
Yes, I'm overdue for a return trip. I know great things were happening as I left, and I did get back a few years later, but now not for 30 years, wow. Buffalo is a great architectural city.....and it'd be great to go back and photograph!!
Watching from the Philippines, right now sir.
I don’t know why you’re criticizing your photos. They all came out great-looking! I just bought my Ftb QL (silver on black) today from a thrift store for under $50. It’s very clean and functions flawlessly! I can’t wait to put a roll of film in it! It has the Canon FD 50mm 1.8 lens.
Thanks for the video! I just found my dad's old TLb and want to learn how to use it. Have you ever thought about doing a beginner's video? Like one explaining the different settings these old cameras have? I know it's simple stuff, but some of us are just learning :)
Cool video. I have the Canon Ftb QL like yours and just purchased an all black model. Fun fact ( I believe) the camera has the largest viewfinder magnification of any Canon at 0.85x.
Great video, love old cameras keep 'em coming!
Great man, we love your videos. I just got an Olympus om 1 and I liking it!
Love my OM-1. Taken some awesome pics with it. Picked up my Canon FTb last Friday but, of course, have not had a chance to shoot it yet.
Oh man I wish I could afford a Olympus OM1 it’s my dream camera, but the people on EBay want a lot of money for them :(
bangers photos 👍
great metering wtih the spotmeter! Which type of spotmeter do you use? and how did ou measure the first 3 shtos?
Front element is easy removable for cleaning and thus tightening . Small front scratches do not show up on film in normal photos.
Hi, Erik, I just got this camera for 40 dollars, but in black. I am new to film photography. I live in Buffalo NY too. I'll be taking photographs with it soon hopefully.
I paid 40 for mine too. It came with the 50mm lens. Can't wait to shoot it. How did you like shooting yours?
Loved your cat - and the vid!
Thank you. I love my cat too.
Very nice video and good pictures too. My first slr was a Canon FTb QL in the early seventies. Used panatomic x, plus x, and tri x and kodachrome. Nostalgia.
It's too bad Kodak did away with Kodachrome. I'd love to try it out. Thank you for watching!
It's possible that there may be some unexposed kodachrome available somewhere. I have read on the internet that kodachrome can be processed to reveal black and white images, but, of course, that is not the intent of using kodachrome.
Cool video dude. Just got one gifted by my brother in law who is a photography student and I love it so far. Still on my first roll can't wait to see how the photos turn out.
The FTb. Erik now that I'm using the FTb I can see why people like it- very solid but I also like that it is basic and only has the functions that I would use, including mirror lock-up. Did you end up getting another lens for it? The FD lenses are very good value, I have several now and its an affordable way to do it. I have actually sold most of my EF canon gear and now use the FD lenses on my Fuji.
Hey there, thanks for this video. What is a triax 400? Did I get that right?
Thank you! Splendid !
Does it only take B&W photos?
No you can use any type of 35mm film.
Erik, I had been looking for a decent 35mm for awhile as I am always wishing that I had a camera to capture the things I run across day to day or on a hike. So today I finally purchased the Canon FTb QL, of course from a pawn shop but it came with lenses: Canon FD 50mm 1:1.8, a Vivitar 28mm 1:2.5 auto wide angle, a Vivitar 85-205mm 1:3.8 macro focusing auto zoom and a Soligor auto tele converter 2x.. This is my first camrea and was wondering if you had any pointers on film or how to use the lenses or the different i think shutter speeds? on top by the picture button, or if you could point me in the right direction as im just googling now. Thank you in advance, Josh
Hey Erik, Does the FTB require its battery to fire? Or does it only need it for the light meter?
+Joe Hy Photography Just the light meter. Turns out the meter on mine is totally broken, either way, but the camera still functions fine without a battery.
To remove other practical in leather use leather cleaner soap or just use peanut butter then wipe it, after it apply coconut oil to moisture the leather
is it self timed?
Keep it up man :)
Joe Hy Photography Hahaha I'm back, giving it a shot. Things have been fairly hectic, but are calming down. Got some more content ready to go soon.
How do you adjust the metering for 1.5V battery? I use Varta V625U with this camera and my metering is always spot on! :)
Or is there something I don't know? I'm not exactly a photographer, just like shooting film :)
Accurate metering is voltage dependant i think. I have a yashica that takes a 1.35v mercury battery which is discontinued. the closest replacement is 1.4v which makes it meter a scene brighter than it really is (i think).
You can get voltage step down kits but I leave the battery out and use a spot or incident meter.
Nice to see you back ! I have the canon FTql, it's a nice camera. I'm not sure 1.5v instead of 1.35v makes a big difference, light meters weren't exactly precise anyway back then haha
I figured as much, but I'll probably just end up ordering a 1.35 zinc air from Amazon, since they're like ten bucks.
I have this camera but the meter is broken. I have a Chinon CS with a functioning meter and it is meant have a 1.3v battery. I put in a 1.5v and to expose 100 Asa film correctly I have to set the asa dial to 10 (ten).
+Cameraplex So you have to have a difference of 3 stops. I don't think so. Not for a 0.15v difference.
Zinc only last a few months once activated. Silver oxide is better and alters the meter ~1 stop too fast.
i have to camera my own but the aperature meter stopped working in the camera:(
+alec cooks i know its a little late but the aperture is probably just stock from old oil, if you take apart the lens you should be able to clean it out.
You do the best reviews ever, when is your podcast coming?
I was on the first episode of Analog Talk. No other podcasts coming.
how do you get the pictures to the computer? thanks!
I give up, I don't know how do you get the pictures to the computer. Me personally, I would just carry them to the computer.
I have my developer develop the film and scan to a CD. Then I carry that to the computer.
Just got a canon ftb that my grandma gave me since my grandpa used to be really into photography. I just have the silver model with an old 28 mm lense and I dont really know what im doing lol. Any tips?
Is it always black and white? Maybe a stupid question? 🙈
Nope! Depends on the film you use.
Why do you keep 'apologising' for the 'Film Grain' when no-one can SEE any on a UA-cam Computer Screen !! You need an actual enlargement in the hand to see any 'grain! -- Keep snapping with your FTb -- I have two -- both given !!
I can see tri-x grain on my computer screen. I like it, though.
never apologize for film grain ... keep the apologies for a boring photo. :)
pre fd lens were fl
One does not need a "pro camera" unless there is some feature one cannot live without. Otherwise, the results are the same with the same lenses.
Hey thanks for responding to a decade old video.
@@ErikWahlstromPhoto That was yesterday young lad.
The video is from like 8 years ago.
@@ErikWahlstromPhoto And?
how do we reduce noise and get more focus also deteil on the analog camera sometimes it's pissing me off to get too much noise in the pictures.
Just polish with shoe polish bro, work fine for me
Canon FTB a great camera built like a safe and handy in a fight . . . . .
