- A very exciting interview! I am very proud to have Kevin Mulryne (Founder of the YES Music Podcast) and Author of the forthcoming book "Yes: The Tormato Story" join me for a fascinating discussion regarding this period in YES history. Tormato is an album that fans either love or hate. We love it. Kevin gives his backstory on his YES fandom, and why Tormato is his favourite YES album.
We discuss recording history of the LP, personnel, some of the technical aspects of the album. Kevin gives a detailed overview of Rick's birotron Keyboard used on this album, Chris' unique bass sound for this record among other tech aspects of the record.
Kevin has penned a 372 page book which is chock full of an international discography just for the album, instruments used, recording locations, maps, interviews with RAK and Advision staff, technical details and a sessionography.
A big thanks to Kevin for coming on and giving us some deep insight on a great record.

Love this album
Just about every copy of Tormato I've seen was in the cutout bin of record stores. I like the album.
EXCELLENT: Underrated album, was one of three go-to albums as a young high schooler, unfortunately, had Tormato tour tickets taken away by my Dad for being a "bad boy" - so I missed the Chicago Amphitheatre show! Saw them for Drama though. Love this Podcast!
When I bought TORMATO in October 1978, little did I know the unbelievable story/ collection of side stories of how the album was made!
I had listened to Kevin and Mark's discussion of the Birotron, Rick's involvement there; also Alan 's drum kit enhancements . On the 1978 tour side, YES first used the " In the Round" staging. I saw YES that year at the Madison Square Garden once, and at the Philadelphia Spectrum, twice. In each case, the seating and sound quality with a center of arena staging was a marked improvement by far!
Great interview Andy and Kevin. Can't wait to read this book. I pre-ordered the first week. Sounds amazing. Congrats Kevin!
Thanks Doug! Big follower of you guys since the AOL Yes Forum chat days!
@@theotherlegandysmusicvault363 Thanks Andy!
Well done guys. There is always a good story around Yes so more information and fresh material is welcomed.
Best wishes and Keep Yessing
Thank you David! Coming from you that’s mighty praise!
Gentlemen: the information I copy under these lines is the reason why Tormato should be remixed (preferably by the great Steven Wilson).
"In 2013, engineer and producer Brian Kehew, who has worked on the remastering of other Yes albums, explained that the album sounds "thin, flat and terrible". He said that Offord usually incorporated Dolby A, a type of Dolby noise-reduction system, in his production work, but upon examination of the original tapes Kehew could not locate any sign that Dolby A was used. After applying Dolby A to the tapes, Kehew said "everything - except for some of the later overdubs - sounded amazing". Kehew then realised that the engineers who replaced Offord may not have known that the Dolby reduction had in fact been used."
Of course, this video has been quite illuminating.
Thank you.
Was the Yes ring worn by the guy in the Madrigal video ever put on sale? Would love that!
That was Rick's ring on Chris' hand. I would imagine Rick still has it.
@@BrendaChristensen How do you know that?
ONWARD.....ALWAYS A LUMP IN MY THROAT.
Yes didn't owe the record company
ANYTHING !
They completely abandoned odd-time signatures on Tormato same with Big Generator
It's all just music to me !
got book ordered. Excellent chat. Officially excited! 😁
I just finished reading the book, great stuff.
