I’ve lived in Denton on and off for almost 30 years …the downtown area definitely has an eclectic youthful vibe and is filled with a variety of interesting one off restaurants, shops, cocktail bars etc…all housed in historic structures with tons of character that surround one of the nicest fully restored historic court houses in Texas .
The immediate surrounding area is filled with turn of the century houses and bungalows, so yes it’s old but definitely not a dump! There are plenty of other communities in north Texas with newly constructed entertainment districts with zero character …this place is the real deal an absolute gem!

lots of character within Denton. That restored courthouse adds a lot of it right there in the square!

We have lived in denton forty five years And Love it, Is raised our family here. We are going to stay but I will tell you that things are dramatically changing, The college students are absolutely wonderful as always, We will always Love them❤, But more than a couple of years ago, Dallas, Texas got the idea to buy their problem Homeless population a one way ticket on the train to denton, We have an enormous Problem here, I know it sounds horrible, but I really don't want ten people parked within my neighborhood living out of their car with their stuff all over the yards, and the school system is riddled with Violence, We love the town and will stay here till we die. But I don't know if I would choose it again to raise a family. It's not a small town anymore. It's a crime-ridden urban area.

wow, you really make living in Denton sound like its the most desirable suburb in DFW...
I have been living here now for a solid 20 years. denton is a complete shit hole. This place is the arm pit of the metroplex. The roads are so bad to drive on we had to get a used 4x4 with enough ground clearance not to knock out the oil pan, we regularly tear up our tires and the layout of the city streets here makes me think some brain dead Hippy on Acid and Pot drew with Crayons on a map and handed it over. these roads haven't been repaired, redesigned or addressed since oh...1955 when they were originally built and you know perfectly well that is the truth. Take a look at the Development Plan for Denton 2030 and there is a whole lot of completely nothing planned... because they proudly describe the city as "Historic" meaning it's old as fuck with no plans to fix a damned thing. They like that because it creates an atmosphere of History and Wisdom that most Universities actually promote as a selling point. meanwhile the roads are trash, the parking lots are torn up trash, there are actually zero Bike Lanes and pedestrian Paths planned with bus drop offs often in the middle of busy streets...it's a shit hole.
Take a night out on the town in Historic Denton and there's nothing here. It's a shit hole. All of the buildings are literally rotting, the ceiling is literally falling in and leaking rain water and every time a new business, even large Corporate chain stores moves in here, they go bankrupt and move right back out again within a year or two. Shit hole. The only thing that passes for "Entertainment " here caters to drunken College students getting hammered on the corner of Hickory and Fry but maybe I should point out that the largest and most popular attractions burned to the ground a few years ago after repeated refusals to sale. Delta Lodge burned to the Ground, the Flying Tomato burned to the ground and everything in that area is literally 100 years old with fabric covered wiring and asbestos packed ceilings. Just challenge me on that and let people in to inspect the rotting shit holes for themselves.
the only industry in Denton is Education and Health Care. the End. Education is obvious. The Universities run everything in Denton with close ties to city Council and the original land owners here and this is no surprise because the Universities and Education are literally the only single reason anyone comes to live in this hell-hole. They function more like a hidden shadow government controlling everything here and the reason why people pay some of the highest Property and School taxes in Texas and yet the schools done' have any good technical programs and the roads are trashed, parking lots are trashed, public parks and assembly areas are nothing to get excited over is probably because not all of that tax revenue makes it back to the city. why would it when they proudly describe it as "Historic"? Put differently: We're not going to fix a damn thing but thanks for the money.
health Care is the other main industry here in Denton because it is a hub for South Oklahoma and the Red River region and everything North of Lake Lewisville. the professionals who work in the very numerous clinics and hospitals here do a good job but you know what else is here? Open up any GPS device and scroll through the POIs: A shocking number of addiction care treatment centers. North Texas is a hot bed of addicts and drunks and wouldn't you know it? Denton recently approved Pot Dispensaries of course to collect the tax revenue and now when I walk my dog I can smell it rolling out of garages and backyards. This move followed immediately after electing 3 marxist "Progressives" endorsed by Our Revolution North Texas to city council and the School Board. It's no wonder Pot is legal now and the Schools are pushing marxism, demanding parents actually show their appreciation by buying gift cards for Teachers and pushing DEI agendas in the Public Schools. Denton used to be one of the Redest counties in Texas and now it's been targeted by marxists to get control of the County Seat and thus the voting block that represents. Denton is a shit hole. don't sugar coat anything here.
It's nigh impossible to find essential goods or products you need in the retail stores here. big surprise: no one wants to invest in a town full of broke College students. Even the so-called big box stores don't have anything you are actually looking for. Every one of them has inventory so limited we have to drive out of Denton and into Dallas for most of what we need or order it on Amazon. Local small businesses open and then close a year or two later. The ones that remain over charge on everything and practice shady tactics. The local Mall, the Golden Triangle, also built decades ago has absolutely nothing of value or demand. the people working the shops there aren't interested in your business and aren't interested in helping people. You are on your own and count on it not being in the store. Just drive to civilization and you'll get what you need. Why is this such an incredibly bad environment for Business? What's really going on here? You know, it won't be long before people just drive or walk around with their smart phones and actually film the shit hole that Denton really is and no one will be able to catch and stop all of them. Any town that describes itself as "historic" just understand that it means they will collect money from Tax payers and not do anything to improve the city they actually live in, the programs taught or run there and will sit comfortably on the excuse of History and Tradition to explain why all of that tax money isn't used to improve much of anything in the city....those Universities though. they have some nice facilities on and off campus even when the exterior looks "Historic". the rest of the town is a shit hole and a Dead End Lifestyle which makes me mad as hell for what it has done to our property values. My kids don't even know what life is like in more civilized suburbs and when we leave to visit them they are full of awe. thank about that a moment. Denton is a shit hole and the sooner we stop covering it up and making excuses then maybe one day it will change.
What is breaking my heart is that my kids have zero chance of any future here, because there is no Industry here but the above mention two both of which are tightly controlled. they will have to seek careers far outside of Denton to have any chance of a decent life because it definitely isn't here and apparently there are no meaningful concrete plans to change that. One day we'll move out of here when we can manage to sell our house in a better economy and we'll live happily ever after.

Lets be honest. Denton is kind of a dump. No realtor ever shows anything outside of fry street / the square. Theres a reason for that. It's dreary and run down.

Denton, Tx is the second most liberal city in Texas behind Austin. I wouldn't live there even if my rent was free.

I moved OUT of Denton last summer in July 2023 because of the high homeless, drug and crime problems!!! I would NOT let my kids go to college in Denton or live there. The only thing the police do there are pull over and arrest for DUI. If they would patrol the neighborhoods more maybe the high crime including car theft, burglary, rape, violence and murder would go down!! Steer clear! I am now in one of the safest suburbs in Texas that will stay safe because they only allow a very small percentage of section 8, don’t have a dart train stop and don’t allow loitering or panhandling-cops will arrest for that!
