Chinesse seems hard initially, but when you realize it doesn't have conjugations, declinations, genders, and tenses, you know you can save a lot of time, for example in chinesse every verb has only 1 form and you know time by context, and in spanish every verb has 108 forms.

Keeping a journal and learning to write Chinese will change your world. I've learned how to write tons of new vocabulary words (both traditional and simplified) just by writing down my ideas and thoughts on the left page of a notebook while writing down unknown characters a few times on the right page. It will make you stand out if you learn to write Chinesr with a pen.

This is the best video, I watched in last 6-8 months for learning Chinese. Most of the resources you talked about, I am already aware but for a newbie mandarin leaner, this is an excellent video. Though I couldn't develop my vocab but I was in the process to find all these information which I wished I would have seen an year ago. Thanks Man, you are awesome but my recommendation, for full time working person like me even you learn a word or two in a day, give 5-15 mins daily would be fine, instead of giving full energy and getting lost on the way. Again so nice of you for share an amazing video. Keep it up.

There are nice videos, which teach all 214 chinese Radicals, there are some, which teach conversation, there are some, which have emphasis on pronunciation and tones.
Would you start, for example with radicals? Theoretically they can help to memorise the characters.

A great collection of tips! I’m an advanced level learner, and I have used almost everything mentioned here, with the exception of flash cards. A lot of people find them useful, but they’re just not for me.

The best video on Mandarin curriculum! Covers all topics, gives you all the resources and more importantly explains how to study for HSK!
Question: what is the mobile app you’re using on the video for Anki?

After graduating from my university, I will dedicate some time to learn Maderine I tried to do but It was difficult to balance between my academic study, doing my assignments, learning English on my own, and trying to learn Mandarin. Lol, I even haven't reviewed, or studied English since along time that's depressing.

Hi Brian! I'm Brazilian and I would like to learn Mandarin and Japanese as a hobby. Which one would you recommend starting with?
Thank you very much for the tips!

    • @BrianWilesLanguages
      @BrianWilesLanguages  2 місяці тому +1

If you’re set on learning both, you can really start with either one. Learning to read either language will help you read the other (a bit), but that’s about the only similarity, to be honest. Traditional Chinese characters are the basis for most Kanji (although often with adjusted meanings), so I guess I would recommend starting with Mandarin and then moving to Japanese. Good luck!

@@BrianWilesLanguages I had actually already started learning hiragana. I can hear Japanese pronunciation more than Mandarin, but I confess that the different forms of honorifics in Japanese worry me. However, the tones in Mandarin also worry me. Thank you for your attention and tips. Sorry for the mistakes in my English!

IMO, no. Unless you have a specific interest in writing/calligraphy, it’s a lot of time and effort for limited benefit.

I have a problem. Whenever I want to write or speak Chinese (just for practicing or when I try to talk to somebody), the only words that come up to my mind are basic stuff (like "My name is...", "I'm... years old", etc.) instead of the other words or structures that I know. How can I solve this?

About learning writing, I don’t fully agree with you. Writing Chinese characters is kind of nightmare for language learners and it’s right that nowadays we mostly use keyboard, however, most learners need to learn writing.
It would be very funny if you say you’re fluent in Chinese but when people ask you to write your name or some basic words, you can’t even write it out. Those who are fluent in a language like Chinese, need to understand its character structure. Once we understand its character structure, we should know how to write commonly-used words, maybe not much but at least 300-500 daily used words.
I’m in a complicated “love-hate” relationship with writing Chinese characters 😂. Trust me, I didn’t want to spend that much time on writing those crazily complicated characters. At first I intended to skip writing but finally I had to learn it 😂, still a nightmare sometimes but now I accept it as an unavoidable part of learning the language. For anyone really wanting to learn this language, not learning writing is only suitable for some certain learners (eg: learning for travelling, for casual basic chit chat with Chinese).
For learning Chinese, it’s very important to identify your learning purpose or goals from the very beginning. This isn’t an easy language to learn (even though my mother language is very close to Chinese, I still have to say so). So for not wasting your time and finally not getting anything, have your clear goals before starting learning this language.
