Chinesse seems hard initially, but when you realize it doesn't have conjugations, declinations, genders, and tenses, you know you can save a lot of time, for example in chinesse every verb has only 1 form and you know time by context, and in spanish every verb has 108 forms.
I agree!
That's true 😂
And how difficult is the writing?
@@JhonDavidFlowersMenjivar Incredibly so. But once you get out of school, you don’t really write on paper. Unless you want to, of course.
I didn't knew that spanish had 108 conjugations
I'm a native speaker.
lol
I recommend for beginner podcast Tea Time Chinese 茶歇中文. He speaks slowly, without accent, also on the website you have script, you can listening and reading at the same time. Also you can click on text and read translation. I really recomended!
Sounds like a great resource, thank you!
Keeping a journal and learning to write Chinese will change your world. I've learned how to write tons of new vocabulary words (both traditional and simplified) just by writing down my ideas and thoughts on the left page of a notebook while writing down unknown characters a few times on the right page. It will make you stand out if you learn to write Chinesr with a pen.

Thank you for the mention, Brian. Really enjoyed the video! The Chairman's Bao Team.
This is the best video, I watched in last 6-8 months for learning Chinese. Most of the resources you talked about, I am already aware but for a newbie mandarin leaner, this is an excellent video. Though I couldn't develop my vocab but I was in the process to find all these information which I wished I would have seen an year ago. Thanks Man, you are awesome but my recommendation, for full time working person like me even you learn a word or two in a day, give 5-15 mins daily would be fine, instead of giving full energy and getting lost on the way. Again so nice of you for share an amazing video. Keep it up.
Thank you very much!
@@BrianWilesLanguages Welcome Man, you really deserve it. I searched all this material in 6-8 months. Your amazing video will save time of many more and is a very good motivation for language leaners. Additionally, you sound very good which is another plus as you have so much energy, you are paving the way for others. Great Job.
@@BrianWilesLanguages Can whites stop appropriating everything. Why must you centre yourselves in things that have nothing to do with you?
I am also learning Mandarin from July with the help of Duolingo. Do you have any suggestions about that?
@@ayushdubey520 Well, Dulingo suits more for revision. Use the resources mentioned in this video. These are the best.
It will be awesome when you make one of these "How to Learn [insert language here] On Your Own for FREE" to learning russian.
Congratulations for the channel. Excellent content.
Thank you for putting everything in description it really helped
chinese has always been my dream language, but I was scared at first. However, it turned out to be so pleasant to learn. I really love it, and I think this is the key why it sticks to my mind so easily. I can say even easier than English some years ago. The great video, definitely! So many great resources, thank you!
well when you really gets into Chinese, you'll found out it's one of the most simple and useful language

"Hello, blogger. I'm Chinese and have lived in China for 23 years. I'd like to ask for a favor: I'm very eager to learn English, but I find it very frustrating and difficult to learn on my own. My Chinese is very good. Could you help me find someone whom I believe has a connection with me? I'll teach them Chinese, and they can teach me English, so we can learn from each other."
@bulizi: Hi... I'm an Indonesian & I've been teaching English for years. I know some basic Mandarin but I don't have a speaking partner to practice. I think it's a good idea if we can collaborate... 你看怎么样,行吗?

thank you, this is so helpful, I am taking a high school introductory online class and the textbook I am following is so hard to learn from so these are some great tips. Especially the app tips and how you divide the time for HSK1 :)
This video is immensely useful - thank you!
Great video! I'm a Turkish-American who grew up in Taiwan (attending regular public elementary school) until the age of 11 at which point I moved to the U.S. My Mandarin is still very good (you likely wouldn't be able to tell that I am not Taiwanese if you speak to me over the phone) but I don't have anyone to speak Chinese with. I'm looking for podcasts and movies/shows to engage with the language without it feeling like a chore, all the app recommendations are really helpful, thanks!

I'm Chinese and a Muslim. I especially want to learn Arabic, but I don't know how to learn it. Seeing your comments, I think you should know Arabic. I don't know if you want to learn with me. I can teach you Chinese. You teach me Arabic.
As a native Mandarin speaker, I strongly recommend Mandarin learners to study standard Mandarin which refered to the mandarin with northern Chinese accent。
If you're keen on Chinese culture and literature, consider using effective tools such as DeepL and Immersive Translate to help you grasp the essence.
很棒!
hi everybody i also recommend reading webnovels in chinese they're quite interesting for intermediat learners also there's lingq language learning platform not for chinese only but for number of languages there're so much DLC right there
well i studied chinese for some days along side russian but i felt that i can't focous on them both so i set it aside until i achieve a decent level in russian my native language is arabic which i'm studying right now in college as a mager i've learned english on my own and lately i finished reading my first novel in english which is i'm aproud of achieving and right now i'm studying russian the most wonderful and difficult language so far you can say that i've achieved an A2level also on my own overmore i'm a blind 😉 so everything is possable if you give it enough time as being said if there's a will there's a way

Hi. Thank you for this video.
I am dwelling on starting to learn mandarin, but I don't know where to start.
There are nice videos, which teach all 214 chinese Radicals, there are some, which teach conversation, there are some, which have emphasis on pronunciation and tones.
Would you start, for example with radicals? Theoretically they can help to memorise the characters.
I would recommend starting from the very beginning of the HSK curriculum using the HSK level 1 video lessons that I linked to below (you can get the book, or not). And you should also use the two videos I posted about tones/pinyin to better understand those concepts. Good luck!
I also recommend 2 chrome extensions: Language Reactor and Zhongwen: Chinese-English Dictionary.
Another resource, not free but definitely really useful: a scan reader pen

A great collection of tips! I’m an advanced level learner, and I have used almost everything mentioned here, with the exception of flash cards. A lot of people find them useful, but they’re just not for me.
yeah i tried getting used to flashcards like using them while i'm on my way home or during the brakes between lectures in university but they're just too boring
I appreciate that- thanks for your comment!
I type Chinese in zhuyin on my devices, I prefer to use this system. In zhuyin but with simplified characters.
The best video on Mandarin curriculum! Covers all topics, gives you all the resources and more importantly explains how to study for HSK!
Question: what is the mobile app you’re using on the video for Anki?
Thank you very much! That is the Anki mobile app 👍
After graduating from my university, I will dedicate some time to learn Maderine I tried to do but It was difficult to balance between my academic study, doing my assignments, learning English on my own, and trying to learn Mandarin. Lol, I even haven't reviewed, or studied English since along time that's depressing.
You can do it, Naira!

I'm gonna give it a shut. Thanks!
Hi Brian! I'm Brazilian and I would like to learn Mandarin and Japanese as a hobby. Which one would you recommend starting with?
Thank you very much for the tips!
If you’re set on learning both, you can really start with either one. Learning to read either language will help you read the other (a bit), but that’s about the only similarity, to be honest. Traditional Chinese characters are the basis for most Kanji (although often with adjusted meanings), so I guess I would recommend starting with Mandarin and then moving to Japanese. Good luck!
@@BrianWilesLanguages I had actually already started learning hiragana. I can hear Japanese pronunciation more than Mandarin, but I confess that the different forms of honorifics in Japanese worry me. However, the tones in Mandarin also worry me. Thank you for your attention and tips. Sorry for the mistakes in my English!
Hi, Brian! Do you think we need to have some preliminary Mandarin knowledge before starting HSK1? Or can we start it from zero?
HSK1 is for absolute beginners ! you dont need prior knowledge

IMO, no. Unless you have a specific interest in writing/calligraphy, it’s a lot of time and effort for limited benefit.

I have a problem. Whenever I want to write or speak Chinese (just for practicing or when I try to talk to somebody), the only words that come up to my mind are basic stuff (like "My name is...", "I'm... years old", etc.) instead of the other words or structures that I know. How can I solve this?

About learning writing, I don’t fully agree with you. Writing Chinese characters is kind of nightmare for language learners and it’s right that nowadays we mostly use keyboard, however, most learners need to learn writing.
It would be very funny if you say you’re fluent in Chinese but when people ask you to write your name or some basic words, you can’t even write it out. Those who are fluent in a language like Chinese, need to understand its character structure. Once we understand its character structure, we should know how to write commonly-used words, maybe not much but at least 300-500 daily used words.
I’m in a complicated “love-hate” relationship with writing Chinese characters 😂. Trust me, I didn’t want to spend that much time on writing those crazily complicated characters. At first I intended to skip writing but finally I had to learn it 😂, still a nightmare sometimes but now I accept it as an unavoidable part of learning the language. For anyone really wanting to learn this language, not learning writing is only suitable for some certain learners (eg: learning for travelling, for casual basic chit chat with Chinese).
For learning Chinese, it’s very important to identify your learning purpose or goals from the very beginning. This isn’t an easy language to learn (even though my mother language is very close to Chinese, I still have to say so). So for not wasting your time and finally not getting anything, have your clear goals before starting learning this language.
