    A much simpler method of making reference lines at the center of any diameter tube, exactly 180° apart:
    Clamp your pipe to a flat surface.
    Place a square on the flat surface.
    Bump the other leg of the square against the tube.
    Drag the square sideways against the tube.
    Repeat on the other side.
    A square will always touch a tube tangentially, no matter the tube diameter.
    Zero math, zero measuring.
    Just make little marks at each end and connect the dots with a sharpie if a scratched line bothers you.

      Requires use layup die for this for the best results. And a proper machinists square; not a ruler with a right angle.

    • @kthschsslr
      @kthschsslr 2 роки тому

      @@bigiron4018 Really? Try it with a bevel gauge set at about 80° instead of a “ ruler with a right angle”.
      Identical result.. exactly 180° apart because that’s how tangents work.

    • @bigiron4018
      @bigiron4018 2 роки тому

      the ruler will often rock because its warped, giving an inaccurate measurement

    The first welding project I ever did was actually a 3" stainless catback with pie cuts by hand. All I had was a cut off disc on an angle grinder and some flaps for clean up. It was a full exhaust with 7 bends, it took well over a week to finish @.@ great learning experience though!

    10:40 I did it this way my first attempt for these. Its main disadvantage is making sure that the grinder wheel stays plum with the cut. Otherwise it'll have gaps that need welding in when you put the slices together. I ended up getting a harbor freight chop saw, and haven't regretted it since

    One of the most used tools in my shop for this type of operation is a small level I attached to a thumb screw clamp... you clamp the tube in the fixture THEN clamp the level bubble to the tube, on "level"... now you can flip the tube 180 degrees accurately and quickly with out having to measure anything... makes cutting the pie slices manageable on a band saw or chop saw...

    I gotta say you have great videos and very informative. I'm an industrial welder and wanna branch out on my own. Its extremely difficult and expensive lol as I'm sure you know, but between you and Jodi I'm plugged with tons of info that gets me moving and allows me to do things with confidence. I've got skills but lack versatile knowledge that's where you come in. It's big help thank you

    hi just some info you can just calculate the pie cut using radius of the bend x 1/2 the tangent angle x2= the cord length of the pie cut. ie 3" radius 3" pipe so the od radius 4 1/2"x1/2 tangent angle x2 = the length of pie cord length

    Made transitions for lots of large and some odd ball diameters small pipe. I am not saying you oversimplified,because it seemed work quite well. Then again there is more accurate methods. When i make a transition for tube it's normally made from flat metal then rolled or bent. Making the transition patterns is a dieing art . Just go your computerized plasma, laser, or waterjet throw in data and wala. Glad i learned the old fashioned way. So many things today diminishing thought process.

    • @TheFabricatorSeries
      @TheFabricatorSeries  6 років тому +1

      jwright650 I'm not sure what type of blade it is. It's the blade made by the manufacturer of my saw (saw is a Kama EV996).
      The biggest killer of a blade is speed. If your saw can't go slow enough, you'll toast every blade you can throw at it in seconds.

    • @jwright650
      @jwright650 6 років тому

      Thanks, I use floods of coolant but that didn't help, so next time I'll try slowing the saw down even more. I think I have one more pulley that will slow it down more.
