That Wizard of Oz Intro always gives me Goosebumps and then that incredible change into Kill the King❤.awesome this concert in Munich 1977 is one of the best rock concerts ever recorded
@@divignaleosatorra346 On Stage includes the version performed in Munich 1977. There are also other versions of the song, like the 19 minute performance at Budokan 1978, and there is also a clean recording from Düsseldorf. They're all different and that's great.
This is my favorite Rainbow line-up. Obviously you have Ritchie since this was his band but you have Dio in his prime and just killing it and Cozy Powell like a freight train. Bob Daisey himself an extraordinary musician who later discovered Randy Rhodes and I think David Stone's Goth aesthetic melded perfectly. This really is the benchmark of excellence in Metal. Love your reactions too. 😍
Some naughty person married the Munich 1977 video with Kill the King from the live On Stage album. The song was purposely written to start the show. Rainbow from this era was one of the most intense, mindblowing musical experiences ever. Ritchie, Ronnie, Cozy playing music of the gods. Try Catch the Rainbow from the 1977 Munich show
To correct a couple of comments here. This is live in October 1977 on the Long live Rock and Roll tour. Nothing to do with the On Stage album which was recorded the previous year on the Rising tour which ended December 1976. Kill the King was written for the stage as Blackmore thought he needed a powerful song to open the the previous tour in 1976. A studio version was finally recorded for the Long Live Rock and Roll album in 1977 and continued as the concert opener. Fun fact no one else seems to have commented on...this concert was filmed in Munich and started around midnight as Blackmore was stuck in jail after the previous gig in Vienna for two days for kicking a bouncer in the head who he saw mistreating ( natch ) a girl in the front row. Let out of jail he was hurried to Munich as the fans waited patiently for his arrival still wearing his stage clothes from Vienna and he plays a blinder. Legend. Update. I stand corrected. The audio is from On Stage while the video's from Munich 1977.
Dio and Blackmore shine here....incredible vocals and such fast driving guitar work, cool riff and solo's. You pick such amazing songs Rebeka love your choices.
The audio and video are very cleverly put together. The track was recorded live in '76, but the video's from '77. And Ritchie Blackmore, guitarist, had just been released from Vienna jail after an onstage fight with an unpleasant bouncer! The bouncer came off worse and police were called. Great analysis, and I'm not surprised you were a little overwhelmed. Could I suggest you react to a UFO song? UFO appeal to Deep Purple family band fans. Phil Mogg, the singer, is as good as Ronnie Dio, David Coverdale, etc., but with a more "summery" tone. Out in the Street, Love to Love, or Rock Bottom, are all great songs. The guitarist, Michael Schenker, is on par with Ritchie Blackmore too. Cheers!
This band is five people with super skills!! Dio is a wonderful singer. I really think you should do a reaction to something from Glenn Hughes as a soloartist or do Deep Purple "Burn" from California jam 1974 and you will hear him along side David Coverdale.
Try Catch the Rainbow live or you can try the studio versions of either Temple of the King or Rainbow Eyes. This line up of Dio/Blackmore/Powell/Daisley/Stone or Dio/Blackmore/Powell/Bain/Carey, (take your pick) is one of the top 5 greatest rock bands in history IMHO They were magic together. Enjoy!
Weren’t many metal bands that I was into back in the day but some had real talent. Not just head-banging and obnoxiously loud. Those are the ones that I admire and respect as true musicians.
This is one of my favorite Rainbow songs! Everybody plays their heart out, and Dio's vocals are amazing! I am so glad you are reacting to Rainbow. I would highly recommend 'Sixteenth Century Greensleeves' by Rainbow. If you want slower songs by them, check out 'Rainbow Eyes' or 'Catch the Rainbow'.
Your next Rainbow MUST LISTEN (to) is the EPIC "Stargazer" (Part 1) and it's continuation "A Light in the Black" (Part 2). Both from the "Rainbow Rising" album.
I first heard these tracks as a kid when Rainbow Rising came out on vinyl. These two tracks take up the whole of side two. For my money, there is no better side of vinyl that I have heard in the land of classic rock. Combined with Tarot woman on Side one - and this album stands a good chance of being top of the classic rock tree. Tony Carey's keyboards are also an underrated ingredient in the mix that push this album ahead of its competition.
Saw an interview with RJDio before his passing where he said the theme of this song was "beware of false prophets," but when it comes to music, as in all art, it can be interpreted however way you see it.
For some reason this is the studio version dubbed over the live version from 1977 Munich. You should check out the actual live version from 1977 Munich… I saw a show from this tour in 1977 on Long Island in New York.. and that rainbow you see across the stage is real it danced with the music I was 17 at the time and it was incredible.. and Dio wrote the lyrics Blackmore wrote the music this is Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow
Hi Rebeka! I love this song too! It is interesting, but the fact that it was released a year later on the record Long Live Rock'n'roll and at the concert looked exactly like on the record. And it's like a continuation of the previous epic A Light In The Black from the album Rising. In the same frenzied rhythm with a mind-blowing solo of keys and guitar. And if Ronnie Dio hadn't left Rainbow: then how many more brilliant things would have been written with Richie Blackmore. But, as fate would have it, Dio was taken to Black Sabbath and he continued to cut heavy metal.
If you are looking for something lighter from this band, Temple Of The King , (which you've already heard), Rainbow Eyes and Catch The Rainbow are three that come to mind right away.
Chess game; yes, if you read the lyrics, the Queen is doing the killing, and the song is written from the perspective of a pawn who resents being a pawn, or someone who was teleported onto the chess board and found himself in the place of a pawn. Of course, the chess game itself is another metaphor for the struggles played out in RL, as Dio pointed out in an interview. Layers and layers of meaning, as with most of his lyrics.
You would really like Dio's "Rainbow in the Dark". It's a song about Ritchie Blackmore, when Dio left Rainbow it was over musical differences between he and Ritchie so the song was kind of a 'here's what I think' to Mr. Blackmore.
Best Dio's performances took place as the frontman of Black Sabbath in 2 + 1 albums. Try and enjoy them !! Do not forget Ozzy's era... the weirdest, rude and genially heavy metal compositions EVER !!
Rebeka, check out "Man On A Silver Mountain"! Richie Blackmore and Ronnie put down an excellent vocals and guitar (Turn it up) vibe that is just flat out "a righteous tune". Give it a listen. : )
"Do you watch? Do you see? Do you know the people in me? I'm the bite, I'm the bark, I'm the scream I'm the poor, I'm the sure I'm the holy, I'm the pure I can tell you tales you just might not believe One night in the city" Dio
Pretty sure this is the audio from Rainbow On Stage 1976 grafted on to the Munich 1977 video. No harm done, it's a pretty good fit, but sometimes the hands are just in the wrong place!
If you want a really slow rock ballad, try Rainbow Eyes. But if you want to listen to one of the best heavy rock songs ever made, and it is a lot slower than this one, then you really need to do Stargazer, preferably followed immediately by A Light in the Black, because it follows Stargazer both lyrically and musically. Trust me, Stargazer won’t disappoint. Also, you may want to privately go and listen to the studio version of Kill the King. You may find it easier break it down musically and understand all the pieces.

I hope you have never heard these before. Here goes:- 1. Talk Talk - It's My Life - once you hear it, it's impossible to forget. 2. ELO - Big Wheels - my favourite song of theirs - and believe me, they made a boat load of great songs. 3. Lewis Capaldi - Someone You Loved (the official video) - a stunning vocal performance and a beautiful back story on the video. The ELO song is really part of a continuous track from side 3 of the album "Out of the Blue". All four of these tracks played together are (in my humble opinion), the best side of any album I have heard. I feel your reactions are totally genuine and that is why I'd be interested in what you think of the above. I see plenty of videos on youtube where I don't get that vibe. Best to you. PS. I know you have reacted a lot to Queen, but "Death on Two Legs" from 1975's "Night At The Opera" is jaw-dropping.
Epic! There is a story here. Mr. R.B was just realesed from jail before this gig. This due an odd incident that happened during a concert in Vienna some days prior to the Munich gig…Nobody actually knew if R.B would make this gig including himself…He actually entered the stage wearing the same clothes he had used there… one might see it in his persona. The Vienna police kept the «Ox» & realesed R.B…odd very odd that makes this performance even more special.
One of the best group of musicians to ever walk the earth.
Blackmore Dio Powell .... Best Rainbow line up EVER!!!!
Dio, Blackmore and Powell. What a great combination.
And Daisley
Yes. Of course. How could I forget Bob Daisley. Thanks for the reminder. David Stone should also get a mention.

Maybe “Stargazer” next by Rainbow or “Hallowed Be Thy Name” by Iron Maiden
I saw Rainbow on stage... it was fantastic. Thanks for this nice moment... I feel young again! 😉🎼🎸
I love this song too. Blackmore, Dio, and Powell were the abslute best of Rainbow back then. They were marvelous musicians.
