- Today Ted Danson is joined by his favorite person in the world-and surprise, it’s not Woody! In the first of this two-part series, Ted asks Mary Steenburgen about her early years: growing up in Arkansas, what her parents were like, witnessing desegregation, her hippie days, how she got the acting bug, and her big break with Jack Nicholson.

ABOUT WHERE EVERYBODY KNOWS YOUR NAME
Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson are total opposites with an unbreakable bond since meeting on the hit sitcom “Cheers.” But after that show wrapped, life took them in different directions, and they missed each other. This podcast is a chance to reconnect, both with each other and the amazing friends they’ve each met over the decades, like Will Arnett, Dax Shepard, Jane Fonda, Mary Steenburgen, José Andrés, Conan O'Brien, and more - that is, when Ted can get a hold of Woody! Join them as they dig beyond the career highlights and into the stuff of life that makes us who we are. Like the title says, this is a place to be known.

wow. They act like 2 people who never met and have crushes on each other. Their smiles. Laughter. Fantastic....Mary, you are a wonderful human being.
It is soo wonderful to see a couple still this in love after 30 years. I feel such warmth that i am crying happy tears to hear this and know it exists at least for two people in this world. Great love, great admiration for each other. I feel like I see in these two the personification of what marriage is supposed to feel like. You feel so lucky to have this wonderful person in your life and they feel the same way. Ted and Mary, please start your own podcast and find other couples in and out of show business who share the same connection. We need the inspiration and reminder of what decency looks like.
I was in third grade when I got to be an extra on Back To The Future III. Mary had kids the same age as me and my brother. My mom was the Nurse on set. I went to school in a trailer for 3 months, waiting to be called to set. I got to wear a dress that was 100 years old. Even at my young age, I felt the significance of putting on that dress. Mary was the sweetest person on set. She always paid attention to us kiddos. To the extent, she let us take her family to “see our town.” ❤
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH.
Thank you for being so kind and thoughtful to me Mary. ❤
Also, the way you talk about your Mom and Dad makes me cry. I miss my Dad so much. My Dad was awesome and my only cheerleader. I got into drugs, mental health problems. My Dad never gave up on me. He died a couple years ago and I feel like my only cheerleader is gone.
This interview flew by quickly! We need 3 more parts! Love this!
Wow they’re so respectful towards each other. What a couple ❤
I love Mary. I am a 38 y/o woman, and I remember being fascinated by her. She is beautiful, but she wasn't one of the “sex symbols” the 90s media seemed to elevate. Now, listening to her, it was clear that she has a gentle way of being in the world but a markedly strong mind and heart. Mary, Murphy Brown, and Julia Sugarbaker from Designing Women. These are the people I modeled my internal world by. I am very southern and the first person to go to college on either side of my family, and my environment was a heavy-handed legalistic religion. It was made very clear that women have a place as the “weaker vessel.” Books and media were my teachers that life could look completely different. Today, I am a social worker, advocating for everyone to belong and have a place in society. If women like Mary had not been present during my formative years, my life would look completely different today. I would not have known I could try a completely different path where I did not have to compromise parts of myself to meet the expectations of my tribe. I am so grateful. And Mary, you aren't liberal because you are no longer in the South. You just feel more comfortable being vocal about it. I live in the heart of the Bible Belt, and I am a liberal progressive. I value those on the fringes of society. That is all.
🎉🎉😢😢🎉😂😂😅😅😮😢🎉😂😂😂😂😮 39:13 🎉🎉🎉😢😢😢😢
Thank you
Liberal progressives harm a lot of people by forcing their ways on others that isn't good for them.
I love how they make it seem like they didn't drive to the studio together... Now *that* is acting!
Beautiful couple. Great hearing about her background and upbringing in rural America as it is something I share.
I felt so relieved when I heard it was a two part interview. I was thinking to myself that I can listen to Mary’s stories forever and never get bored .
She always seems so likable.
This was charming as hell. Can't wait for the second part.
Two of my favorite movies of all time are bttf 3 and parenthood. I grew up watching Ted and i never really thought he was that charismatic on screen but I've been enjoying his contribution to team coco and glad he's been such a good guy to the people around him all this time in Hollywood. I have a growing affinity for him now, hearing how good of a husband he is.
bttf 3?
Back to the Future 3
Oh Back to the Future III!
When I was about 17. I attended the London premiere of Back to the Future 3. Since then, I’ve briefly met many many stars at my work but she was the first one I ever saw. I will always remember Mary walked by about three feet in front of me in some magnificent blue dress and I thought to myself. That has to be the most beautiful woman alive, just how gorgeous she is and how beautiful they manage to make Hollywood starlets look. It’s shocking. All the fashion and make up but also just the way she carried herself so regally.
Love Mary, a career of amazing works... But i cannot express properly how much i loved her role in step-brothers !!! She made me believe 😅😅😅
I loved this. You both addressed very personal and difficult topics with such grace and candor. Mary, you are absolutely luminous. Ted, your sensitivity and compassion are beyond description . Love you both!❤❤❤❤
I also experienced the early childhood trauma of being taught that if I did something wrong, something bad was going to happen, and in my case, I was going to hell, as well as my friends who didn’t live my religion’s teachings. And how that carved out how I viewed the world and other people.
I wish more podcasters would embrace serious conversations, and trust that conversations about real life will provide the occasional laugh.
This was great!! Eagerly awaiting Part 2!!!
CANT WAIT FOR PART 2!!!! relationship goals.
Mary's voice is Beautiful, she should do an Audio book. And wow the Beautiful Love that they both have for one another. Ted really said some Delightful things about the Love of his Life. These two seem so Lucky to have each other. God Bless you guys! And wow I didn't know that Jack Nicholson was such a Sweet gentleman. ; ))
OH sweet Mary! We share this in both of our lives 9:05 stories- our fathers passed away and we the daughters at the time had a feeling it 'was our fault'.
Mary was in my favorite movie 'Cross Creek' she was amazing in that movie.Takes place in a small florida town in the early nineteen hundreds. She played the part of Marjorie Rawlings' author of the Yearling, Cross Creek and more.
She's stunning.
6:08 That's comforting to know from 0 to 8 years old a daughter can remember, because my daughter from 0 to 8 years old, were the years I spent the most time with her.
I knew this was gonna be refreshing and delightful. Looking forward to the next one.
Wonderful loving mother stories!
People really were like that in some churches, and it is inspiring to be reminded.
I never say things like this, but they are so cute together. Lol.
Love this podcast. This episode was amazing, can’t wait for part 2.
That was so enjoyable. Looking forward to part two!
"Melvin & Howard" is a big movie I've been meaning to watch. I recently found a vhs copy of the movie. This interview has further increased my interest in watching that film.
I don't care how old she is...what a BABE!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The smile Ted had when putting on his headphones ❤
I want to feel love like that some day.
Please tell me we’re getting part 2 of this interview soon. I’m hooked.
I loved this so much!!! Can’t wait for Part 2:)
I was about to say this needed to be a two parter. Glad to see you two agreed!
This may be my favourite interview of two people ever.
Loved this interaction and Mary and her stories so much and am excited for part two!!❤❤❤
I loved this interview. Cant wait for part 2.
I was intrigued by Mary not only for her very Dutch sounding name ( I am Dutch) but also because how she played her role in the serie: Tender is the night. ❤
So delightful to hear Mary talking about her past. Ted and Mary are definitely 2 peas from the same pod.
Very sweet
yay!!!! part 2, you guys are so great together. Mary, I hope I meet my "TED" one day. thanks for this, can't wait for part 2
This is so great! We need part 2.
Ted gets cold shivers (the good way) speaking of his mother in law but resists woowoo?
A great couple. The first movie I saw starring Mary was Time After Time, an underrated sci-fi thriller directed by Nicolas Meyer, who went on to direct Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
Absolutely loved this interview!
Have always thought she was Terrific. Happy for them both!
My sister and I used to get the worst/best giggles in church. It's the whole you're not supposed to thing...not to mention that there are simply so many funny things in church!😂
I HOPED SHE WOULD COME ON!
I've wanted, especially after seeing Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, for Mary to adopt me. I don't care I'm 46. I was adopted and my adoptive mom wasn't a good mother. So I always wanted Mary to be my mom. She just seems so kind, funny, compassionate, sympathetic, and sweet.
Fantastic again Ted, it's a tough interview to pull off so well. Danson the super interviewer
My son is dyslexic and when we had him in school we met some of the most worthless people calling themselves a teacher that we ever thought existed. We eventually found a TEACHER that could teach dyslexic students and he just blossomed. God bless the true teachers!
You know it must have got back to Jack that she would not change her name and that must have really boosted that he knew she was the....one he needed....she was great for Jack ....a small reward for caring about your art and respecting a fellow soul.....
This is so cute.....makes me wanna be in love again....with a great husband that adores me like Ted loves Mary.... This podcast is special....thank-you for posting this vid...tuning in from Victoria BC Canada
I’m sure someone else had shared this, but Sarah Crewe is the main character of Little Princess, written by the same author as The Secret Garden. They are excellent ❤
Love her. Time After Time lives in my heart.
What a beautiful couple. All class and wonder. LOVE is in the air.
I did a podcast with my gf/wife back in 2009. Did 3 episodes. I wanted to do it, maybe her not so much. It was fun but she had the same reaction Mary did. Ted is really good at hosting Mary. I wanted to make my partner a partner in the podcast. Probably not the best approach for me. I envy this episode. Thank you Conan for creating a space for Ted, Woody and not Mary. She might be hooked to co-host a favorite interview with TD. Because he is a touchdown!
Wow! Mary looks incredible!
as expected Mary Steenburgen does not disappoint thank you T Danson
Wow, kinda blows me away that this is who he was referring to when he'd mention his wife. Had nooooo clue they were married - lucky man, she's amazing! 👌
My cousin's wife is a giggler. Several people in her family share the trait. It usually happens in moments of high emotion. Though she has a great sense of humor, when the giggles overtake her, it's more of a stress response.
Adorable from the beginning
What a lovely two humans!
Mary is a rare person who seems to get prettier with age.
I’m glad I watched this…what a great couple!
you are a lucky man Danson, Your wife is lovely, beautiful and a super talent!
i just thought they were a couple in curb your enthusiasm. 😂
Thank you : ) that was wonderful!
Love these stories. Love both of you. XXX
I absolutely love her story! Can’t wait for part 2. #Chair
This is so sweet and adorable ❤❤❤
That really didn't feel like an hour
We need more Mary and Ted!
i love love love this!!!!!
Many more parts please.
Lovely pair.
Only a few minutes in but the tone here reminds me a bit of a fairly recent interview of Doonesbury cartoonist Garry Trudeau by his longtime wife Jane Pauley, sweet and slightly awkward.
So lovelly, Ted Im a big fan from cheers and you, and Im so happy to see you so happy! You peops ROCK! Stunning couple! cong
A funny moment, when Marty said 'Jesus was' a YT ad showed up.
I've always had the "hots" for Mary Steenburgen. She's just so cute.
y'all are adorable.
Must get Malcolm McDowell as. a guest
It's on the tip of my brain...the movie Mary S was in with Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio....Ohhh, Gilbert Grape!
How do you not want to marry this person after meeting her?
She is mentioned in everyone of his podcasts, so the irony!😂😂😂
I loved Goin' South!
loved that magic pan.
This was beautiful
I'll raise my glass of water to Jack for this once.
Brilliant!
Goin south. Great movie
Gene Wilder told the of the same experience when his mother was diagnosed with similar life threatening health issues. ❤
Hi Conan
Sweetest thing I've heard in a long while: I don't understand any of that but we'll do everything we can to help you.
I'm of the inclination to carve out a marriage akin to this.
Now you 2 should read Mondo Freaks, you know... for old times sake.
Nice 🖤
I think a lot of us would love to “know” her as he does. 😍 But just learning about her life will have to do, I guess
Sweet.
Hey, it's Jack O'Neill's crush
