From my little experience with seeds, the temperature is more important than the light, so heat mats are great for seeds. Also it's just a lottery which seed will germinate and which not. And it's not uncommon for seeds to not germinate, so I'll get bored of it, reuse the soil for different seeds, sometimes more than once, until the original seed suddenly decides that now is the right time to start germinate, and then I'm confused because I don't remember planting this, but it's actually from months ago :D.

Yeah temp is the big thing in my experience, especially with tropical fellas like monstera. I tried germinating some bell pepper seeds on an unheated windowsill one year - they took 40+days even though the packet said 7 days!
Next year I put them directly above a radiator so they got blasted by the heating all day. First one germinated in 4 days! They were loooving that heat.

That has been my experience as well, especially in a cooler house. I also find humidity domes help as well.
I think this winter I might use heat mats under my more sensitive tropical plants. Has anyone tried that?

@@bethb7973 I have a heat mat under my plants. The seed starting mats don't really get hot enough to make a huge difference in the temperature of larger pots. It especially doesn't work on thicker pots. Thin plastic is better. On smaller/shallower pots, like my succulents, it works very well. They stay nice and warm.

The deliciosa is called that for a reason: its fruit is delicious! It's also called the "banana ananas" because it tastes like a pineapple and its elongated shape. It's sold commercially on Madeira (Portugal) and I bet many other places. I have a fully grown monstera deliciosa that I grew from seed of a fruit that I ate in 2012 ❤

Love your channel...I started 12 seeds last year. Put them in a Tupperware box with moist Spagnum Moss over a heating pad. 2 sprouted in two days. Planted 11 after they were outgrowing the box . Started different plant seeds in the box and a Monstera sprouted with the new seeds... I didn't know she was still in there. I put 3 of the Monsteras in one pot. After a year they are around 16" tall with no fenestrations but beautiful!!!

In 2021, I bought 5 monstera delsiosa for $10. In a take out container that has a transparent lid and some holes in the lid, I put the seeds into moist sphagnum moss and closed the lid. By golly, all 5 seeds sprouted! I was amazed to see how different the size of the resulting plants are. Yes, it takes about 2 years to get to a 2 to 5 feet tall.

I once grew palm trees from seed. It took two years from fertilizing the "flowers" till they ripened. Then another year for them to sprout. By then I had forgotten I had planted them. Fortunately I had stuck the seeds in with already established plants, so I had a mystery until they unfurled their fronds.

I had bought a small pot with 8 monstera d. Seedlings and in a little over a year they're 5ft tall with fenestrated leaves as large as my torso. I use about 5 grow light bulbs on a 5 head lamp to give them enough light. I give them diluted fert every week. The important element is light and it needs to be bright. Otherwise the plant won't respond enough and remain small and slow growing.

I've been mulling over your germination troubles for a couple hours and flashed back a couple years to when I started some moonflower seeds. The process was similar in that you're instructed to soak the seeds. It was either overnight or 24 hours. It also suggested to take a paring knife and knick the seeds. Maybe that might've sped things up a bit for you. They too took at least a week to germinate, and the conditions were a bit warmer with some sunshine radiation helping warm them up a few hours a day.

There's something satisfying in growing tropical plants from seeds instead of "just" buying a plant in a store but yeah, it takes a lot of patience
I bought 20 Bird of Paradise seeds a couple of years ago and gave my sister half of them. It took almost four months for just one of them to sprout for me... Of course my sister had to outdo me and had three of her seeds sprouting 😄
I'm tempted to try the Monstera seeds now

There doesn't seem to be a clear concensus about delicosia (small form) vs borgonsonia (large form) monstera. Apparently they can all get big and get lovely leaves if you give them good enough conditions for long enough. Importantly, they need a lot of light to get the holey leaves.

“Borsigiana” is the deliciosa Small Form.
While small form can get big, it takes longer than it takes Large Form, and won’t ever get as large as Large Form.
Small Form also does develop the ruffles, it just takes some time.
Small form fenestrations almost look neatly placed while Large Form fenestrations can look erratic

That's the difference of being a Brazilian and a British: I've, Brazilian, seen so many monsteras (Adam's Rips in Portuguese) since I'm a child that I don't care too much about it and would never have it in my house.
They are everywhere: in condo's lobbies, in our friends gardens (some people have them inside their houses), in the streets...
When I was a child people pissed me off saying "Look! Adam's Rips" 🙄 whenever we passed by this plant. 🙄🙄🙄🙄
But congratulations on your experiment. I once tried to grow parsley from the seeds. Nothing happened and I'm traumatized to today.

the fruits are very tasty. But it only ripe once in 18 months and when you eat, you can only eat a small section each day. I waited for four to ripe and had to travel for work this year. When I came back. They were all gone. I suspect the possums got them.
