Appreciate all of the comments, I enjoyed doing the video and the trip. My son was driving the 4Runner and I feel quite comfortable riding shotgun with him.
@@Ryan-yo4dg in all honesty I am just the drone operator. While I am not trying to second guess the kid, this was the only time I have ever seen him get out and walk the trail before driving it. It could be that the legend of the Steps at Black Bear pass was in his head. But in any case when he got back in to drive I was still walking the road, flying the drone and it felt very comfortable to me ;>}
Liked the technique of combining footage from drone and vehicle. Gives a great perspective of what it looks like from both angles at the same time. Been there done that before.
Great video! The drone footage gives a great perspective of how much you actually have compared to the very little room the driver’s perspective gives. Many stay too far passenger and get into trouble.
Bunch of nope from me. We did the pass that connects to Black Bear, and there were two spots on that where I got a little uncomfortable. Those cliff edges are intense. The San Juan area is a must experience, though, for sure. Even the less popular trails have awesome sights to see and experience. Red Mountain Pass is really cool, too.
Very cool! I've seen lots of video, of this part of the trail, all shot from the vehicles. To me, video shot from the vehicle doesn't appear to be too steep. The side view, shot from the drone, really shows how steep it is. When I get up in that area, I plan on running Black Bear in my 1998 Jeep Cherokee. Now, I have a better idea of what to expect. Thanks.
Yeah by far the best, onboard camera view and drone view in one video. Great video that really show's the dash view and overhead view at the same time! Most of the videos are just plain deceiving and don't give you that type of view contrast!!
Amazing how much wider the trail looks from the aerial footage vs the dash mounted footage, LOL. I hope to do this trail at some point in the next couple of years.
I remember when I did black bear they were steps. Literally you dropped 2 ft down for each step these on even baby steps I guess over the years they have worn down
I did this stretch years ago on a small dirt bike. Every time the front tire dropped off a ledge it would hit loose pebbles and shoot towards the drop-off. That was no fun - guess that's why I only did it once!
Great perspective! I was at the top of the pass the day before last and was wondering to myself how my mostly stock (bigger tires) 4Runner would do, and more importantly how I would do. I've done a lot of the passes and basins in the area, and after seeing this, I think it would be OK. Next time we are down there, I think we will head all the way to Telluride.
If you just saw the drone POV you’d think “no big deal” but the driver’s POV got my palms sweaty! Nice work. Did you have any issues with some of those tight switchbacks in the 4Runner?
Schafer Trail on “Crack”. Can’t wait to Smoke that lol! Hoping my Trailhawk which I believe is a shorter wheel base compared to the Tacoma, will give me a little more wiggle room! Nice video! Really nice!
My son was driving the 4Runner and I feel quite comfortable riding shotgun with him. But when we got to the top of the steps, I jumped out, grabbed the drone and walked down to get this video.
I am the drone operator and my son is the wheeler, so I asked him your question. He said his only concern was the ledge just before the steps. That is when he parked the 4Runner and we got out and walked the steps. He went back up to the 4Runner and I stayed out and shot video. He said there was only one switchback, right after the steps that came close to being a challenge. I feel very comfortable riding with him but I will share another video I did at Sand Hollow to give you a feel for his level of skills - ua-cam.com/video/P1aWXgyB2ao/v-deo.html He is the one that goes under the Jeep to do the welding.
I wheel a Jeep on 40inch tires usually this is my daily. Most people consider this trail extreme the only thing extreme are the views. Trust me when I say I didn't need a spotter on this section the video footage was well worth it.
Out of all the black bear pass videos. This the best prespective to date . Good job
probably the best video of coming down the steps ever. Really appreciate it. That 4runner looks great.
Two amazing perspectives, no shitty techno, nobody yelling. This is the perfect off-road video haha
Techno? What videos have you been watching? I've never ever seen a video with techno music for off roading.
Excellent video! This really puts into perspective how steep the steps really are, and is the first of it's kind I've seen.
Very nice to have both perspectives to compare. Really gave a complete picture of that descent.
Appreciate all of the comments, I enjoyed doing the video and the trip. My son was driving the 4Runner and I feel quite comfortable riding shotgun with him.
Would you say this is the most challenging section of the trail?

@@scottrandolph5578 okay, thank you
It looks like he's picking his line pretty good there. I lived in Telluride for years and have been through there many times. Nice video.
@@scottrandolph5578 Big big big cahonies - my rig might make it okay but my head would never pass the test. Great video!

Incredible job with this video. 4 stars! Two enthusiastic thumbs up! Well maybe just one.
Great video! The drone footage gives a great perspective of how much you actually have compared to the very little room the driver’s perspective gives. Many stay too far passenger and get into trouble.
Yeah that looks like how that 4runner rolled this year
Unreal reliability with 3rd gen probably best car ever made .my opinion.
100% agree have a 97 322k&99 215k best vehicles ever drive anywhere tomorrow. And they ain't no mall crawling pavement princesses either lol.
Nice video. Really helps to get a feel for the terrain.
Dual view is very cool. Reminds me of the Rubicon.
That forerunner sure bounces around a lot.

Outstanding video!! Thanks for sharing.
Looks like so much fun. Hope I get to go there soon

Great video!! Id have freaked when i watched the drone footage and saw my driver tire was off the ground almost the whole way down. 😳😅
Amazing how much wider the trail looks from the aerial footage vs the dash mounted footage, LOL. I hope to do this trail at some point in the next couple of years.
Done it twice in a 47 jeep, piece of cake
Answered all question I had. Thanks!
The last video I saw of that spot on motorcycles made it seem so much easier. The first person view doesn't show how steep it is at all.
did this trail in VW bus with chains on in the 90S
Incredible video of this section!
Excellent video.
2:45. Great shot!

Thats amazing video. Great Job, not sure if this puts me more or less at ease about driving this road.

The drone footage is just so rad

Made it look easy, GJ!
Glad I don’t have to drive that beast done the switchbacks down to Telluride.

Holy cow!!
So, it's better to hug the wall here?
My son was driving the 4Runner and I feel quite comfortable riding shotgun with him. But when we got to the top of the steps, I jumped out, grabbed the drone and walked down to get this video.
I'll stick to swimming with Polar Bears. Much safer LOL
Just keep the wheels turning.
Holy shit
Thats nuts
Are the steps eroding, doesn't seem like much left compared to earlier video's, thanks
They seem to be the same the last couple times I've been down them.
VERY steep!
Like a boss!
WHITE KNUCKLER NARROW SECTION >> 2:30
so are the step the worst part. Or the switchbacks

Do you have tundra brake upgrade done to rig?
Not on that trip but I do now. Definitely not needed to do the trail Definitely needed for commuting in the city haha
Looks. Quite unpassable some angles 3rd gen is as wide a vehicle I'd take through there but 3 rd gen. Is only rig I'd wheel anyways.locked rear?
Bro....I've seen ppl with hummers on this road. Look it up! 🤕
I have a factory locker and housing just not installed this is my daily I don't usually wheel it.
The only difficult part of the bear today. Back in the 1070ies it was more worse.
you can drive grandmaws impala station wagon over this dirt road.
Using a spotter to help you pick and stay on the most optimal line is far more important and beneficial than having someone shoot video with a drone.
Or you could just drive it🤷🏻♂️
I wheel a Jeep on 40inch tires usually this is my daily. Most people consider this trail extreme the only thing extreme are the views. Trust me when I say I didn't need a spotter on this section the video footage was well worth it.
Don't use brakes. Use gears.
Nice tracking clips by drone. Next time, you may attach the audio from your dash cam.
Hardest working brakes in America.
The worst part of the pass!
boring
