Make your own outdoor privacy screen! Not quite the same as a blackout screen as you still get light in. This can be sun shades for patio, balcony privacy screen, or a pet screen (whatever you want), even a type of sunblock suncreen.
Tired of excessive sunlight streaming into your home, making it uncomfortably warm and causing glare on your screens and furniture?
These window shades for outdoors offer a practical solution by blocking out the sun's harsh rays while still allowing for natural light to illuminate your space!
You'll see the process of making custom window sun screens that fit perfectly on your windows.
I'll go over the materials and tools you'll need. Don't worry; they should be available at most hardware stores. Once you have everything you need, there will be step-by-step instructions, making it easy to follow along.

*NOTE*
The screen was purchased at Home Depot online...it is Phifer SunTex 90...doesn't have to be this brand though...I also just preferred the max 90% sun block but there are other % to choose from.
The frames were replaced as some were either warped or previously damaged. Plus they were just a personal preference for the bronze color over the tan color. Plus plus I needed new frames anyway to make the new ones for the top windows. And most importantly I was able to share how to make the frames with you!

I did something similar, and YES it makes it a lot more comfortable. Less electricity used (and paid for$$) because the air conditioner is running less.

That's what I did for my home. All of my West and South facing windows have solar screens that I built myself. The only thing I did that was different than you was leaving my screens alone and adding a solar screen on the outside of the window that I can remove during the winter. I attached mine with 7/16 plastic screen clip that are attached to the window frame so I can just turn the clips 90° and remove the screens. My house is situated on top of a hill here in California so my house is like a rotisserie chicken. It's not uncommon for the west surface of my house to be close to 170°. It has made a huge difference reducing the heat load.

I recommend also planting tall growing shrubs or bushes evergreen to shade that side of the house
I actually have evergreens planted but it doesn't help as the sun is so high where I'm at...great for added privacy though! Thanks for the input!
Cool idea! For most people, without risky frame disassembly, you can just take the old screen off by using a boxknife to pry the rubber spline, and then the old screen fabric follows.

Brilliant! We get direct north/south on our bigger windows and it's brutal in the summer. I had no idea you could build a screen. I'm definitely trying this.

I spray painted my screens white on the west side of the house to block out that heat. After a few years the paint has started coming off but a cheap spray can of paint will work wonders. I can also see good from inside to outside and it is hard to see inside from outside. The original screen was black.

I'm personally not a fan of spray painting the screens but I'm sure if you do it slowly and methodically, it "should" be fine.
U coulda used ur old screen frames... just take the old screens out. Replace with new. No need to buy new sides when ya already had them
Right you are! Unfortunately, some of the old frames were warped or needed to be replaced, which is why I decided to just replace them all to be consistent.

Yes, but don’t make the mistake the gardening company I hired years ago to do my landscaping made. The sunniest side of the house (south) is shaded by a silver maple tree that has big roots headed right into my foundation 12 ft. away, it’s killed all the grass above the roots and I have to have the tree removed and then someone else will have to remove the stump. 😫 Very expensive mistake and how they will keep the tree parts from hitting my neighbors’ landscaping and my Tartarian maple and my house as they cut it down remains to be seen. Also, the heavy equipment will have to drive over a big portion of my lawn and sprinkler system because my driveway is far away from this side of the house.

What worked for my family was Cordless Cellular blinds. You could literally feel the difference between the outside and inside. Works fantastic in summer and cold winters. We also added double curtain rods to seal in any heat whatsoever. To us this results in a 10 degree difference through the entire house.
You can buy the blinds at Home Depot or Lowe’s and they cut them to your size windows. Literally the best thing we did.
Awnings could be more expensive but honestly depending on hot hot the weather it might just be worth the investment

Nice video. The screens are a lot more sturdy if you get metal corners and cut the frames at a 45 degree angle. That blade you used did a great job!! Also, you can cut the excess screen from the inside edge just above the spline for a cleaner look. Nice job!!

I think 45-degree screen frame corners (which may be sturdier) would not work in this case, since he planned to reuse the saved mounting clips, which are needed to re-install into the existing window frames. Thanks for the tip about where cut off the excess screen. I need to replace mine, and really like this idea using denser screen material for south and west facing windows. 😊

@@georgecharokee4570they're metal corner pieces that hold the corners together and they last longer and are sturdier. They will work on any frame. Just Google metal corner frame pieces.

Since you tore apart the mesh screen anyway, why not just remove the mesh and replace with the sun screen material? Would've saved time and money.

The front of my house faces east and windows (and average temps) don't create heat but I replaced the screens in 2 windows with solar screens to add privacy during the day because you can't see in from the outside. At night close the blinds.

There are different colors and degrees of darkness available. My preference was 90% for maximum heat block and I like the look of the darker shade. I've seen tan and gray screens on some homes too. Thanks for the compliment!

This is a great look. I had this on my windows in my Phoenix Az home. Did a great job of keeping a lot of sunlight out, especially during the summer months. I didn’t know ow they were Solar??? I just thought they were shade screens.

I just put the privacy film on the inside of my windows. It’s like having sunglasses on when you look out and nobody can see in.

You can put films inside the widows that is designed to reflect heat. It's more seethrew but it cannot be removed for winter season.
Also, why not just replace the bug screen by the sun screen?

how much did it improve your electricity? Also, did it make the interior very dim?
If you mean how much does it cut the need for the air conditioner...I would say a huge amount. This time last year, I would have the air conditioner running for a fair amount of the afternoon and now I have not even turned it on once yet. It does decrease the natural light coming in but that also depends on the amount of sunblock fabric you use, I personally like it though.

I'd have pulled the splines and put in new screen on the old frames. Also, need to tighten the screens as you go to avoid rippling.
Have you considered a giant sail shade for cutting down sun on the wall? You can also buy 40% shade cloth (for gardening uses) to help block a bit of the sun. Requires good anchor points in case of wind.

I thought these were solar cells but in the form of a screen. Like an alternative to the roof ones. Sadly, I was wrong. But interesting video nonetheless. Never knew of these types of screens before.

Yes...extremely strong fasteners were used...although the surface was cleaned with alcohol they supposedly lock on even when wet or dirty...thanks for the comment!
Even easier, make 1 large frame for each window & screw it to existing molding…
Great idea! I actually tried that 1st but unfortunately the longer the frames the more difficult it is to keep them from "bowing" inward...almost like they need an actual support frame piece in the middle to mitigate this..I feel the separate frames work much better for this reason...thanks for the input!

Doesn’t the dark black screen attract the sun’s heat, wouldn’t using silver or white screens be better for reflecting the sun?
Agreed on your take of the lighter color screens. However, I have noticed a HUGE difference in the interior of the home being much cooler (still have yet to run the A/C even with high 90° temps) AND I prefer the black screens as they simply look better from the outside (my opinion of course)! To each their own though, thanks for the comment!

@@bjbhehir cool thanks for the education, still kinda blows my mind. I purchased Mylar and with Velcro I put it up on my exterior East/South windows that don’t slide, it keeps the rooms a little cooler, I gotta save for a window air conditioner.
How is sun screen different from bug screen?
Sun screens focus on blocking the sun’s rays/heat (denser fabric)...bug screens focus on keeping insects out (lighter fabric).

A standard window screen restricts around 50% of your air flow through the window... just saying... not sure if this screen is worse.
This screen is much more heavy duty and a bit more restrictive on air flow...I also notice the tiny gnats don't get inside anymore where the standard screens didn't block them...another bonus!

Old frame's ?

Great job, but way to much work, time, and money. I went to one of our stores where they buy pallet loads of stuff dump it on tables, charge $5 the first day, 3 the next , $1, etc til bag day for $5. Went several times on dollar and bag day and now for around $10 I have 15 rolls of window tint and clear and frosted designs for say bathrooms for privacy. I can do different windows in how much light I want spray with water and a squeegee.I am redoing all windows, but the tints usually last about 10 yrs. I found higher uv ratings this time. We only open our windows a few times in spring and fall so window tints work best for us. The screens are great but why not just reuse the original frames? Or is the darkened screen thicker and wont fit in the track as well? And also the screen looks like less air would flow through. Cute video introduction and good tutorial.
Personal preference is all...just not a fan of tint film...some of the old frames were compromised and needed changing and I kept all frames consistent with each other...and yes the new screen is much thicker...I have the windows open all the time in the cool mornings and evenings and I get plenty of air flowing through (not to mention the privacy remains since it is the screen in place and not the window in the open position)...again just personal preference...thanks for the comment!

It's actually been over 3 months and they still look brand new and are functioning flawlessly, especially with the scorching temperatures right now...keeps the home super cool for sure...thanks for the input though...much appreciated!
