    Hi mate, nice finish. I do it for a living too. One thing I'd like to add, as you'll know, the tidying up is the worst part. Get as large a tarp you can find and lay it along the bottom. Makes it so much easier

    Good job! When I used to do this I would put down some old pvc advertising banners 1m x 4m and I would sweep up the trimmings as I moved along the hedge. The customers liked this and I got loads more work because I did it. Actually, it made my life a lot easier and quicker which was better for me as I always gave a price for hedges.

    • @CalvinThomas05
      @CalvinThomas05  6 років тому

      Many thanks lazzaboyce for the comments. I will try that in the future with a sheet like you say. Cheers Calvin

    • @noidear7216

      I say one job at a time, i.e, clean up at the end.

    • @Iazzaboyce
      @Iazzaboyce 6 років тому

      I used to pick up as I moved along the hedge because I only had two ground sheets. If you do this for a living you will find many hedges are next to flower beds and these are almost impossible to pick up hedge clippings from and customers want them tidy.. Like I said I always charged a fixed price for a hedge, so instead of cleaning up at the end for nothing, I was starting my next job. I only did it this way to earn twice as much in a day, but each to their own.

    • @noidear7216
      @noidear7216 6 років тому

      If you weren't charging for cleaning up at the end that's your mistake. Surely you include time for cleaning up at the end? I find it much easier to concentrate on one job at a time, especially if you're moving stepladders around, and I think you'll find most people will agree. Like you say, each to their own.

    • @Iazzaboyce
      @Iazzaboyce 6 років тому

      OK. I suppose my method doesn't take account for people that find if difficult to alternate between hedge trimming and clearing hedge trimmings. Oh! And moving a stepladder.

    I cut hedges the same way it’s nice to see someone doing it properly for a change. If you want a lightweight cutter with a longer blade I recommend the Makita EH7500 it’s lighter than the sTihl HS45 it’s got anti vibration springs on the engine, it’s a great bit of kit.

    I love the hedge cutter, i treat it as an extension of my arm. i use the stihl and like you said its heavy but used to it now. I have used the cutter you use and i find it does drag/suck more when cutting a conifer but for privet its by far the best.

    • @CalvinThomas05
      @CalvinThomas05  5 років тому

      Hi Brian. Many thanks for the comments. That's a hard question to answer because there are different types of hedge that grow at different speeds but I try to do my own very regularly ( privet ) every few weeks as soon as I see new growth shoot up I quickly trim it I find it easier that way. I'm only cutting new growth then all season. The shape stays the same. If I'm doing it for customers some tend to leave it until its overgrown say once / twice a year. Cheers Calvin

    Excellent job. Sharp edge looks well. Personally l like a rounded edge, looks a bit more informal, but depends on the setting l suppose.
    The hardest time to get the top level is the first few toppings but once it's only fresh growth u are taking off it's easy enough keep the line.

    If the hedge was against a brick house I always use a morter line of the brick as a guide. Ill take come off then stand back and find any high spot, then go back in and take those high spots down, stand back and see how I did. Moeter lines are always flat, and a good rule. Without the morter lines, I stand back and eyeball my work, then go back in and take the high spots off a tad more...works every time..

    Absolutely fantastic mate well done, some great tips. Have recently changed to Stihl cordless, has changed everything. Obviously no super long reach version or twisting handles but for the bulk it’s wonderful. Battery lasts for ages, it’s lighter, non polluting and so quiet I rarely use ear defenders unless listening to an audio book. The pluses more than make up for the minuses. I cut about 150m of 3m high Thuja and about 50m of 1.5m hawthorn plus invaders. Again thanks for great video

    Hi Calvin, greetings from Canadas West Coast, I use a longer extension hedge trimmer at at low (below shoulder level) heights because I like it that the engine weight sits outside of my two hands and it kind of cantalevers/counters the weight of the hedge trimmer bar on the opposite side. But to each his own and i guess ultimately wherever you prefer to favor the muscle work is what it comes down to I guess. Happy trimming and keep it up(or down :) )!

    It looks nice, but in areas where you get a lot of snow, having a flat top can cause it to break apart when the snow is on it. I prefer to make the top narrow and tapered out lower down so the snow falls off.

      Good point. Worse than the snow is the snow plow operator though

    Really nice to see someone like myself who loves to see high quality work. It's very rewarding when you look at your workmanship. I've seen some rough jobs in the past. Nice work and good quality tools. Keep up the good work, and stay fit at the same time. 😀

    Nice video Calvin. Some great tips. I really enjoy doing mine. I have about 300 ft of hedges about 6ft high and use pretty much the same techniques. Happy trimming.

      Hi Bionic Rusty. I don't envy you doing 300 ft of hedges lol. I suppose I do a lot of feet in total if i put all the different jobs together lol. I've never added it up but ill look into it. Thanks for the comments. Cheers Calvin

    Hi would you recommend a petrol machine over electric? (I’m looking to maintain my own garden)

    • @CalvinThomas05
      @CalvinThomas05  3 роки тому

      Hi, All depends how much you have to do with it. Petrol machines are great for big jobs but they are noisy and heavy and I think the battery operated stuff is getting better and better each year so whichever is up personnel preference, Cheers, Calvin

      Hi Calvin. I have been enjoying your video's a lot. I deal with this weather modification constantly over here in the U.S. but I have heard it is even worse in Europe. Check out the youtube channel Dane Wigington or even type in where you live on youtube and put geoengineering and you'll see video's others are uploading. Main Stream Media hides this stuff. Thanks Calvin have a great day.
