5:20, the 1st example should be of Imparfait right? Because it is "He used to always finish before others". This shows habitual action and there are no direct 2 actions in the sentence. So here, I think it would not be appropriate to use Plus que parfait.

Means its finished and we know when it got finished. Imparfait: It is used for action or events that don’t have a definite beginning or end, but happened over a course of time in the past. We know that this event is finished but we dont know exact time when that action got terminated Plus que parfait: It is used in relation with other tenses to show that something occurred at an event earlier point in time, further back in the past. This tense is used before other tenses
