Bought mine in 1990.It is still going strong. I have used it to split pine lighter knots, green oak logs and everything in between. It is the most awesome and indestructible tool I have ever owned. The weight is a great advantage when doing anything with stout wood. If you are chopping light brush, you will still need a standard machete.

@@DougFLTRX Welcome to the SP8 family. I am sure you will love it. I put mine on the the old style military utility belt (OD Green and about 2.5 inches wide) clips in the front. I also wear my pistol holster on the same belt. Be sure to keep checking on Ebay for good prices on this item. Enjoy and don't lose a finger. Also get yourself a good machete that is Tromontina or Ontario Knife Company but not the one with the finger guard as it causes you a lot of grief when you use it. Ouch!

    Nice video, Brother !
I have had mine for over 15 yrs. I put it in the vehicle "survival" kit, just in case of an emergency. I used it for about 3 yrs while in the Army as an Infantryman. Also, while my son and I were in the Boy Scouts.
It is a true BEAST of a workhorse.
Thank you again for the video !
    Keep them coming.
Also, Congratulations to the whole family on the new addition coming !

Btw, Brother...you do not have to open the 3 button portion of the sheath. Just pop the single retention strap, and draw it out like a regular knife.
That has worked for for years.
Also, if you rig up a sling-type rig (I used 550 cord) you can carry it slung across your chest (handle up or down) for ease of deployment, and to keep your hands available...especially, if you are carrying a ruck/backpack, and need to use the SP8 to clear a path.
As for the "urban use", it will pry doors open (used it in Iraq and Afghanistan) like on trailer homes.
Have also used it to lift doors while installing the hinge pins, or to pry apart 2x4's during a remodeling project.

i'm thinking that wrapping the handle with some baseball bat tape will cure that vibration issue nicely....did it to my Fiskars polymer handled hatchet and it took it from a Good Tool to Great Tool, mainly for the added traction
I'm considering grinding the 'sawback' off when i get mine, i cant see it affecting the battoning enough to matter

Nice Survival big knife, pry bar at a very affordable price, but not sure why its called a Machete, which is a tool to swing and clear your way from grass, bushes, big vegetation I am sure u can do it for a few minutes with this but you will be tire soon. Overall a very good multi purpose tool.

It will be AAAMAZING to see that blade vs. El Chete by Tops Knives

  • @cassanoa
    @cassanoa 5 років тому +4

With this knife - I have two - the only question of how big a log it can split is - if the blade can span the log circumference and how big is the baton your using - nothing stops it - I have even taken pallets apart with the pry bar tip - one of my best knives at any price - especially when work has to be done

Other Pro's, Great for forced entry, Prying doors or windows open, and the back side is stout and heavy enough to break padlocks.

Definitely would be a good SHTF/Bug out tool incase you needed to go all Mad Max and "acquire" supplies! Thanks for watching!!!

The _Ontario SP8 Machete_ is an OK tool. It's not great but it is not too bad. Japanese *Natas* are superior & have much better sheaths.
I don't like much about the _Ontario SP8:_
    - it is heavy so why not just use an a small axe/hatchet
    - it's weight is spread out instead on toward the end like a say kukri or bolo
    - it is too short for clearing the camp/cutting grass
So I personally would just go with the classic small axe/small knife combo for better performance.

I do wonder once you are really chopping 4 plus inches around if this is at all competitive with a hatchet.
I have used a Kukri and Woodman's Pal and more weight out far they chop better I imagine,
      more competitive with a hatchet.
I've had a heavy machete at least twice as thick as an Ontario and it chopped great but not like a Woodsman's Pal say.
The Woodsman's Pal isn't easy or fun to carry but it's a great North woods tool for brush, land clearing and de-limbing and the Billhook is great for real serious work.
A hatchet may still be better but I think Kukris and other choppers with a weight out towards the end are competitive.
The weight towards the end and curvature or angle of the blade makes the Kukri and some other designs better choppers than just a big knife or thick machete.

@@michaelkulman7095 After all has been said and done the different *_multi-tools_* are NOT best for serious outdoor activities.
Axe, saw, and knife are always the best working tools for woodcraft.

One of the worst marketing decisions Onterio made was calling this a machete. It's not. I would have called it a survival tool or combat survival tool because, in hand- to- hand combat this thing would have to be very deadly. I think it is unfair to compare it to an axe, hatchet or shovel as others have because it's not one. This is one of those tools that if all you had was SP-8 and a good full-tang drop-point knife, other than cooking gear, and a water container, you could easily build a shelter and set up camp. By the way, if a person doesn't like the handle grip, I suggest wrapping it in paracord and then stretching a bicycle inner-tube over it for a more comfortable grip.

lately i have become concerned about the tang of these knives - has anyone heard of the tang breaking on the SP line of Ontario knives - this could be a problem - the vibration might be a sign of potential weakness that could lead to instability
