    When I unlocked this class (it was the third class I unlocked) I really remember not being very excited. I just looked at the cards and felt kind of underwhelmed. I played with the idea of picking one of the two left-over classes that are already unlocked at the beginning, but then stuck to the summoner. Now looking back some characters later, it was one of the most fun classes I have played. Still feel some magical connection to that class. :)

    Endless Spikes is for boosting strength in numbers - obviously.
    The bottom is lousy but could work in a curse/disadvantage heavy party. It works alongside intervening apparitions and gear that protect summons.

The Thorn Spitter was the MVP for sure as I think it was able to attack for 90% of the rounds we played last night. Way more interesting and rewarding than the brute who was my first character. @@CelloBassett I also started with the brute this is my fifteenth scenario so the last one if you had the same personal quest as me. I was a tanky brute and all I did was put up shields, move, take damage and attack. I gave lots of heat to my teammates who clog up the battlefield with their summons so to not be hypocritical I am trying to figure out the summoner. She looks really good but extremely complicated. I hope you had as much fun as me playing the brute and maybe shoot me your first mistakes that I shouldn’t do before I start.

    I am playing the summoner with an Elementalist in our party and in lower levels it was pretty tough but as we are now levelled up to 8 (recently I have reached level 9 in my case) it gets crazy. Especially the XP collection for the Summoner feels sometimes ridiculously high compared to other classes. I love it and I love the difficulty in keeping my precious summons alive. As I struggle to fulfil my personal quest I am curious to see my level 9 summoner in action soon. The Lava Golem was summoned by me once or twice in rather short scenarios and that guy does some crazy damage output for a level 1 card. Probably one of the strongest level 1 cards in Gloomhaven. I do understand why people are struggling with the Summoner but I love her (although not as much as the bloodthirsty Berserker which was even more fun to play with). Great review!

    At 25:30 you say something that I think you've said in other videos as well, and I'm not sure if anyone's corrected you on it yet. The only way to get two turns of strengthen is if the target is strengthened in the middle of their turn, which basically always means you're strengthening yourself in the middle of the turn. If you strengthen someone else, they're never going to get more than one turn out of it, regardless of whether you go before or after them. If you go before them, then they get strengthen for this round, and if you go after them, they get strengthen for next round.

    • @neuralnetgames6540

    Endless spikes bottom can do some decent work if you have two minis and a soothsinger along. (yes very specific I know)
    Anyway both the bear and the monolith summon has the things that circles summons miss, lots of HP. With the soothsinger retaliate song and bottom side endless nails you can give the bear and monolith a respectable retalliate 4 on summons that can reliably take the abuse needed to dish back some retaliation.

    I know you don't like "Endless Spikes" but here is what I do, especially in the final room. I travel with the bard who has tons of curses loaded into the monsters deck already. The bard may also have the disadvantage song in play, or the +1 shield song in play. Using "Earthen Steed" and boost of striding, I leap over the opponents (move 7) landing in their midst or the other side of them. I go invisible with my cloak and cast "Endless Spikes". These three little buggers are now causing monster focus chaos AND surviving hits/causing retaliate due to the bard's gifts above. Next round, if I get lower initiative than my fighters, then my spikes will be the focus target of the monsters instead of the fighters who are also adjacent to the same monsters. Works like a charm. Thoughts everyone?

      I forgot to add that the card, "Strength in Numbers" is now even more valuable where X is the number and range of summons in play....so if you have the thorn, two wolves and three spikes, that's a "6" attack at 6 range!

    Forged Ferocity bottom enhanced with bless. I use it once, maybe twice a scenario, and it’s an easy pick for losing during rests. Adding 3-4 blesses is plenty to be super helpful, also if your friends bring summons, they get blesses too. Just a bonus! Great enhancement

    The summoned creatures are a little tricky to work with. What I think gave them bad press however, is that a lot of the early guides, totally trashed them. Its like the early guide writers had just not figured out how to make them work.. and so they got a bad rap.

  • @Slightly_Mad1335
    @Slightly_Mad1335 Рік тому

    The builds in the game are highly dependent on the difficulty level, the number of players and the composition of the party. And some also on the level of the characters and the availability of some items. For example, Strength in Numbers is a key card for a 3-4 player build after 20+ completed missions, due to the availability of 4-6 summons only from items and the ability to play it 4 times in a row due to the combination of Major Stamina Potion, Minor Stamina Potion and Pendant of Dark Pacts. And then even more often due to rest. + Volatile Bomb in hand items. Summons is required not to die in order to deal 7-8 damage on average for 9+ rounds, up to 11-13 dmg only from items and self summons. And that's just from the bottom of one card! In this case, Endless Spikes is great if the player wants to maximize damage for high difficulty of the game.
    The second option for Endless Spikes is a curse build paired with Cthulhu with a Baneful Hex build. The poor bastards attack without damage and take 2 retaliate dmg and suffer 3.

    You didn't note that with Otherwordly rage, you can swap with ANY summoned ally , it doesn't have to be your own. Ok that might be splitting hairs. But it can and does expand the options a little bit. Interesting things can happen when a beast tyrant is in the party.

    • @neuralnetgames6540

  • @rocovailo2862
    @rocovailo2862 3 роки тому +1

    So, when it comes to nailspheres, I find the retaliate portion is the trip up for most. The value of this card is the innate disarm, NOT the retaliate.
    This is a defensive card and if you get retaliate off? Great! But that's not the strength of this card.
    On average even, if they get 1 shot, that's 3 attacks not damaging your allies (that's something like 15+ damage prevented)
    Additionally it allows your allies to play more aggressively. One of the best plays you can do is jump right in the face of the enemies in the first room, or just behind them, slap the spheres down, and that'll leave your friends room to breath in the opening turn(s)
    Quite often, the spheres will live through one turn too, allowing you to play another summon, likes the wolves, right in the enemy face, then play divided mind and have them both attack that same turn.
    The value of these guys gets even better if you factor in it's an immediate +3 att/range to your Strength in Numbers attack.
    I've consistantly had 7-9 attack/range and that just nukes enemies.
    Then, factor in who your teamates are. If they are a buff class, like music note, then the combination is even more crazy. With my modifier deck having most of the blessed, and the enemy deck having all the curses, nail spheres was almost never dying (also they don't attack retaliate enemies, an important feature ) and my attack summons were getting crits left and right.
    Nailspheres are not for every build. And heck, for the horde build style of play, they aren't for every scenario. Enemies with consistant AoE or multi target, mostly 1-shot elites, or crowded small maps.
    But, in those cases I can just swap in oozing Manifestation.
    But ya big 3 takeaways for nailspheres:
    They are essentially mobile disarm summons, retaliate doesn't matter (though is nice)
    They boost up strength in numbers for massive consistant or burst damage.
    They play very well with buff/bless classes

    • @neuralnetgames6540
      @neuralnetgames6540  3 роки тому

      Good points for sure! Thanks for commenting and watching and I appreciate the extremely detailed response! That being said I agree... partially. The problem is they are not as good as a disarm for the reasons you stated(AOE, multi target attacks and also for another big reason: enemies that have curse, especially multi target curse can absolutely wreck you and fill your deck with curses really quickly, so it's not as good as a disarm. It's a sort of disarm with some pretty substantial drawbacks and conditions. There are enemies that have summons attached to attacks which a disarm will stop but a nail sphere will not. Another intangible is how disarm causes monsters to focus. Ranged monsters when disarmed focus like a melee so instead of staying back they charge forward into danger with full move. Compare to other disarm loss cards or even some non loss cards that can easily disarm 3+ monsters and it doesn't hold up well. I think if you are really aware of enemy types and what they do it can be decent but still I think there are a lot of situations where they are not as good as a disarm so can't really recommend them. However I would say that I think they are a bit better than I conveyed in my video so let's meet in the middle lol

    • @rocovailo2862
      @rocovailo2862 3 роки тому

      @@neuralnetgames6540 my main reason for taking it is A) I really want to do horde summoning. But also b) I don't feel the value of the other level 6 card is dramatic enough or different enough with what I already can do. It's a good card, for sure. But if I need to pierce through shields? My 3 attack enhanced wolves can do that, or the unicorn I'll get next level. The wind element can be used by biting wind, and the initiative as well is similar. The bottom half is interesting, for sure, and the one thing I had to really think about if it would make a huge difference. And it honestly doesn't for me. Most of the time I'm right up there with my summons anyways, and most of the time I don't want them leaving my side. There are some cases where a tactical retreat is in order, and I can take a hit for them. So there's definitely value in that. But is it more valuable than having my nailspheres act as a shield, possibly gaining more value than 3 hits, and have my bottom action to use for divided mind (horned majesty) or strength in numbers?
      Nailspheres is not overall a generally good card, even compared to the other level 6, on its own. But I feel the various uses it can have with the support of the right teamates, items, and play style really crank up their usefulness!
      Even against AoEs , like last game, they saved one of my allies from being targeted by an earth demon's aoe. Allowing them to live and be able to move to get the killing blow.
      Now... Would I use them if I had a consistant source of mass stun/disarm? Probably not xD and if I ever get enough money to turn Black Fire into a disarm machine gun... Nailspheres will probably be left home except on rare occasions.
      But for the time being the seem to synergize well and certainly have their strengths, especially in a horde build and with the right teamates.
      Still, great guide for general summoner play. Your picks are definitely easier to play and way more consistent in value.
