Thank you for this video and a big thanks for mentioning about the cardboard in the charcoal box. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to leave it on or tear it off. No other video that I've watched mentioned anything about it. Again, thank for the great video.
I ordered my Char-Griller yesterday and it should be delivered assembled from Lowes(free assembly and delivery -- great deal Lowes and no I do not work for Lowes) and I really like how you showed each step and the reason why. The seasoning part is longer than I expected but I think I can do this, but I think my wife will expect to start using it sooner. I should have mine ready for a Memorial Day cook. I will watch your video again to make sure I did not miss anything. Great video and I have subscribed and will be watching for your first couple of cooks to help determine what we cook on Memorial Day..
Glad you found it helpful! You can do two seasonings in one day and have it in a good enough place for cooking the next day. I did two pork shoulders last weekend and they turned out great!
I just ordered my 980 today and should be here early next week from Lowes. I really want to thank you for the clear and very detailed video of "How To's, I appreciate the time you took to share these! Thank you!
Your comment about the flap on the fan box is important. Several people have had trouble with the temperature rising to high. It turned out the flap on the fan box had been destroyed either by to much wood in ash box or flap to close to fire in fire box.
It’s clearance season at Lowes. Just snagged one of these for $260. The Pitboss Pro was also on sale for $174 but I prefer the taste with charcoal. If your looking to get one, now is the time to do it! Better act fast as it’s flying out the door!
I use Duraflame starter sticks because those little starter things you are using fall out of the place they sit in when you light them. I get the starter sticks and push them up into the charcoal then light and they don't fall and they light the charcoal very efficiently.
I’m really trying to decide between this and the masterbuilt 800. I like the internal design of this and the grease management probably better than the masterbuilt.
So I’m doing my burn in of the gravity 980 literally as I type this comment . Question when you did your burn in at 350 degrees and your fan kicked on once the temperature got low enough how high did your temperatures read mines shooting Upwards to 400 degrees .
Have you experienced any difference between the controller temp and the real temp inside? Mine is 20 degrees of difference before, during and after each cooking.
@@projectperfecthome7338 I am taking the temp at the top of the grates in the center. Right or left grates will give me different temps due to the location of the heat source. The difference is 20 degrees under of my setpoint.
@@brianchen1163 I have the same problem with my grill...35 minutes to increase from 225 to 305. My grill was assembled at Lowes but which specific part are you referring to which you said was backwards. Did that fix your issue? Thanks in advance for any information.
When I installed mine initially it was caught and not hanging down properly. Basically, if yours is not hanging straight down and able to swing side to side then take a look at why! Does that help?
I’ve heard of others having the issue as well but think the source could be putting too much wood in the ash pan or not having the flap setup correctly
Long time. From what I see. They say to only use what you need for your cook that your doing. 1 pound of coal per hour at 250F And Four pounds at 600F per hour. My first cook I had leftover coal and the next morning it was still hot and burning.
Thanks for the video. The 1st time I used the grill I added a few pieces of wood in the ash tray as the directions stated. For the 2nd time, I added a few pieces of wood in the ash tray but this time the silicone cover leading to the fan burned. This caused the digital display to show "Open." By this time, I had a brisket on the grill. Because the grill was malfunctioning, I lost a $57 brisket. I called Char Griller for guidance. After buying the grill at Lowe's and having them assemble it, I'm pissed that Char Griller would NOT reimburse me for the brisket. If I had been using the grill multiple times before this malfunction, I would not think of asking them for a refund. This was the 2nd cook in 2 weeks! Char Griller is going to send me the parts and now I have to make the repair instead of Lowe's which is NOT my thing. Nov 21, 2021 Update Do NOT buy your grill directly from Char Griller! If your grill malfunctions, simply return it to the retail outlet within the return policy dates and they will exchange it for a new one. After researching complaints against Char Griller, it seems everything boils down to "Operator Error." The so called "warranty" is worthless. They make you pay for the parts to repair the grill. Thanks for the video. I just picked up my 980 this afternoon and I’m in the process of putting it together.
Congrats Mike, you’re gonna love it!
Thanks for this. Just purchased one of these and will be picking it up this evening. Looking forward to using it.

Thank u for this straight to the point tutorial…

Wow Amigo great video and great tips Thank you 👍🏼 Let’s grill ! 🥩
Pro tip. On the timer in the app, you can actually keep scrolling your finger around that circle to over 23 hours!
Somebody beat ya to it but thanks!
How long does it take to cool down the grill
I’m really trying to decide between this and the masterbuilt 800. I like the internal design of this and the grease management probably better than the masterbuilt.
Both are good grills but I think the Char-Griller is slightly better built and the better priced option
Thanks, does char griller use a PID controller?
Hey man thanks so much cause I was doing this burn in Completely wrong. Great job!

If you're shooting over, your flapper is probably stuck open.
I got mine assembled at Lowe’s and I started the burn in process only to see an “open” message on the screen! I can’t figure out how to fix this issue
It says open when it detects that the hopper or ash pan door is open
Have you experienced any difference between the controller temp and the real temp inside? Mine is 20 degrees of difference before, during and after each cooking.
I haven't noticed it on mine. Is is over or under, and where are you taking the temp at (down the by grate or near the top)?

It’s been an hour and a half and I can’t get the grill up to 350! How come it only took 3 minutes for you?
Something is definitely wrong then. Did you take out the fire shutter out?
