Having a lot of listening experience behind me, and with all due respect to many great bands, I have not heard anything more amazing than when darkness, depression and melancholy intertwine so epically and captivatingly, forming something called "Katatonia". And "Dance Of December Souls" is simply the best creation in this genre. My opinion does not claim to be the ultimate truth, but damn it, who else did something like this...
I haven’t dug into that album yet. I’ve been stuck on their later catalogue (great cold distance and after). I’ve only been paying attention to Katatonia for the past 1.5 to 2 years or so. Great, amazing band. Kind of fun when you discover a well established band with a catalogue full of gems way after the fact 😁
Can't agree More, there's of plenty of bands that touches this themes and ambience, but no one like Katatonia, it's like a comforting darkness and melancholy, i never felt miserable listeting to them like other "sad" or "depressive" bands
I can confidently say this was one of the best interviews I've heard w Kat (Jonas). Delving into things not mentioned in the several dozens I've heard w Kat. I'm around both their ages yet I didn't really get into metal until my 30s. So I find it quite intersting hearing about the 90s scene.
What a great smooth flowing interview, though Paradise Lost had a major impact on Katatonia, i remember reading that Greg Mackintosh's jaw dropped when he heard Brave Murder Day, goes to show that band's that influenced a style of metal can get blown away by the band's that they influenced, Katatonia early material just took the baton in their own direction. Great interview Andrew.
Mispronounced his name, which is strangely common. It’s Renkse, not Renske. Also, a question about Anders’ absence from touring would have been good. So hard to find information about that, it’s almost like a secret. Katatonia is not just a Jonas solo tour (although it feels like it now and felt like it at the show).
I'm the ones that critic a little bit the latest setlist that they did. They seem to not recognize themselves as a prog band and instead prefer to be more headbanger 4/4 based. I would like to see more of they're proggy stuff that came after the Great Cold Distance/Night Is New Day and beyond.
Thanks for this interview! I love Katatonia. Jonas has the most amazing voice.

Love Katatonia. They caught my full attention with Great Cold Distance. From then on following whatever they do. Colossal band.

Is jonas still with bloodbath? I’ve seen many Live Photos with them lately, but it seems they have a stand in for him on bass?
Should have asked him about Blackheim...
Ionas Renski (c)
What is the proper pronunciation? I don't think anybody's gotten it right lol
@@nrothe2898Yonas Renk-seh
It can’t be Renski when it’s spelt Renkse. Common error, even in print decades ago when they’d misspell it Renske.
Thanks for this interview! I love Katatonia. Jonas has the most amazing voice.
Yup.
His specific timbre is indescribable. Calm, commanding, buttery
