- I attempted to pair one of my favorite species, Harpactira pulchripes (Golden Blue Leg Baboon), and it ended in disaster. See what went wrong.

From several attempted pairings I've seen, the H. pulchripes females are quick to eat the males, I don't think I've seen one that didn't end in a "dinner date," even if the pairing was accomplished. Better luck next time, Alex.💜💚
Alex, that wasn't the environment he was tasting, 😂
There was way too many signs that let you know what the out come was going to be…
I have never seen such a well fed adult male 🤩
Neither did that female
Well, at least he didn't go to waste! Very bizarre behaviour inside his own enclosure as well, almost as if he was barely clinging on to life in the first place. Are you sure he was newly matured? 🤔
It's a shame how it ended for him but he was definitely broken
And probably broke, too!😜😄
He was telling you he didn’t want to! You killed him, not smart!😢
Sorry it was a sad outcome but I’m glad you’ve taken note of both the Ts behaviours and using it as a learning experience. I’ve never bred Ts myself but I’m guessing every time is a learning experience if nothing more 😊
I really hope the next time you’re able to pair her it’s goes well for you 🤞
Poor guy should've ran the second the boss music came on. Seriously though, too bad for MM but good on you to show the process. People can take away lessons from this video👍
I dont think he was freshly matured he might of been matured for awhile
He was terrified of her he didn’t want to mate with her he knew exactly what was going to happen !
I always feel sorry for the males. He definitely wasn't "into it" though. Better luck next time (for you and the male tarantula haha)
Do you maybe need to quarantine the males for a bit before breeding them? Just so you know he’s healthy?
I think he was weak from old age... it was his time to go
I kinda agree....looked older in my opinion
I already see people commenting negative things. I don’t know why people watch tarantula mating videos knowing full well it is common and even standard for some species to eat the males. You did everything as you should have. It’s sucks you didn’t get an insert but from the majority of *large reputable breeders* I’ve consulted, some males just don’t do a good job. Your female is beautiful. I hope you have the chance to try again. Great video Alex and so sorry it didn’t end the way you hoped.
In all fairness, most of the criticism is not centered on the female eating the male, which as you mention, happens and can be a natural part of the process. That part sometimes cannot be avoided and is mostly out of the hands of the person managing the breeding.
Most of the criticism in the comments thus far, is the lack of judgement used and how obvious red flags were observed and then ignored by Alex as the male was introduced. In Alex's own narration he mentions many times how he noticed the male was weak or behaving odd. What was seen was far beyond the the male just not performing well or ideally. Why proceed and force the pairing if it's very obvious something is off with the male? Give the male more time, give it a meal, keep it hydrated, give the female another meal, then try again later. Do what you can to maximize your chances of success without rushing.
@@EarthsGeomancer if a male is weak and behaving odd, would you instead just let him die without trying to pair him? What do you want him to do? Their lifespans are short once the males mature. The clock is ticking. Why would you waste a male that could still possibly produce captive slings to the hobby?
@@tarantulakat @tarantula kat I hear you on that. Without knowing how long it had been since the male matured, it's a tough call. However, if Alex just got it, it may have been worth it to give it a little more time to settle in, eat, rehydrate after he saw the signs he described when introducing it to the female. I mean, if the male was *that* close to death, there probably would not have been a "win" situation regardless.
It's something that is unavoidable at some rate, from my understanding. In nature their odds of survival I'm sure are much less. It's a shame how toxic some folks get about these things, especially when he stated several times what he already knows he could have corrected. It wasn't like he was like oh, and if she tries to eat him it's chow time. They literally die a slow death once they mature out and stop eating.
Option 1: male tarantula dies of old age
Option 2: male tarantula dies while mating to create more tarantulas
All other bullshit aside, nature will run its course. Whatever option you choose, death is waiting. How you treat them in the process is more important than anything and life (or death) happens, man. Better luck next time, sir!
Sorry to hear about the loss of the male tarantula
Why did you force him? He clearly didn't want to...
Hi I’m a new subscriber and found you through Tarantula Collective.
Liking the content 👌 cheers 🍻
Ohh well. You win some, you lose some. But you live to breed another day. Interesting video, thanks Alex. Cheers...
Was she hungry that time? Does it need to feed them before mate? Thank you for video learning.
female tarantulas are just genetically inclined to eat the males they pair with, usually because they feel it’s necessary to the (nutritional) survival of her egg sac- or if they deem their genetics as inferior they will eat them without hesitation
I think putting 2 containers side by side and letting the Spiders acclimate to each other for a couple of days beforehand before pairing might have reach the different outcome.. I learnt this method from the beastie room
@@trueaussieray9093 yes that is because the male will drum on the side of his enclosure and the female will sense his presence by the vibrations that is the reason it's good to put their enclosures side by side so they are touching each other before pairing, that and make sure each spider especially the female is well fed
Damn. Sorry mate. It’s a shame but it’s the nature of things. Glad they let you try a pairing though
Thanks for sharing that experience. I know the outcome wasn’t good but some of us are trying to get to the next level and we need examples of pairings , even when they don’t go correctly.
My h pulchripes is one of the most beautiful t's I have. My second baboon species and a lovely creature, always out on display and super calm. I've watched it take a tub in it's water dish many times. It gets all happy and taps the water when it's filled. Best of luck next time 🙂
@tarantula Haven - o you think its possible to have a connection to a tarantula, one of our tarantulas is happy to be handled by my wife but is defensive towards me if i interfere with him/her at all, my wife also believes he likes music and when she presses an earphone to his tank, also he'll come out and will gently pickup the earphone if its put down in his tank. she thinks the more they are handled the more tame they become, are they more social than i give them credit for?
Appears the male knew something you didn’t! And it’s always fatal to turn down a receptive female!
No maybe she sensed something might wrong the male.
CHEERS Alex!
$250 dinner for that girl. More expensive than any meal I've ever had 😅
Honestly, there were some red flags and yet he didn't call off trying to mate the pair.
Reminds me of the meme with the dog having tea in the burning house saying: "This is fine.'
Sad story, best of luck next time
WELL THINGS HAPPEN ALEX
Yeah I'm no trantula expert but she did this guy a favor...he did not look well. Love your videos 😍😍
I like your video.
Just got my first three tarantula sling today from FedEx. Very happy.
I'm sorry Alex but anyone with a tiny bit of experience would have picked up on that was a no go straight away! I truly think the excitement took over your smarts.. 2/10 for that effort.. don't worry I still love ya..
Also use a paintbrush instead of tongs the sharp tongues can accidentally Pierce an abdomen when thrust forwards to stop the fight...
Maybe he felt that this was going to be his end😔 poor little guy he sure looked skinny to me or maybe he was just smaller.❤️ She was such a meany . Anyway thank you for the video 👍🏻👵🏻🇺🇸
My H. pulchripes is bat shit crazy, oddly enough my OBT is super chill like my Caribena versicolor.
Aww sorry, things didn't work out on this one. Better luck next time 😞
Lunch not love… ouch
Attention, all males! Remember to swipe LEFT on this girl!!😄
Oohh shit. I guess that male did nit impress her. Well, things happens. I lost a T vagsns male some weeks ago. He manage to get some inserations though!
He was sooo little for being mature and $250 jeez
Extreme exotics in tempe, Arizona?
No vid in a month I had to check your channel to make sure I didn't unsubsidized. Hope things are well.
Hey, thanks for checking on me. Yeah I’m ok I just have some things going on personally that have upset my schedule. I’m working on one now hopefully for the end of the week.
I’m really depressed about it but I can’t really do anything about it at the moment. 😔
Must use strong males or they stand zero chance from the jump
Hey Alex. I hope you're doing ok :( I miss your videos!
He was probably an elderly gay man...😜🎉♥️
Dude that sucks but shit happens.
Y’all don’t come for him with the would’ve, could’ve and should’ve. Sometimes hind site is 20/20 and all we can do is learn from it. I’ve seen plenty of videos where the male didn’t know what the hell he was doing and it turned out just fine and vice versa. Not to mention Alex did take him out and little dude perked up so he re introduced him.
Alex knows what he’s doing sometimes this thing happens.
Keep your chin up friend like I know you are and try again.
Yes, somehting wrong... he's food for her babies.
I have a MM I can loan you if you want to try again.
I always enjoy your intros. I mean I love all of your videos, but, Oh, those intros. Sorry to hear you lost your male.
really cool music what is it
Talk about poor judgment. Good lord. There were many obvious red flags that were ignored. If you see issues in the lead up, don't push on. Give the male more time. Feed the male and the female again, keep them hydrated, and then try again later.
Can we see your Tarantula paring videos please ?
Enjoyed the video very much Alex. The female is gorgeous. I just want wanted to say. ... in the comments section of this video no one can give you advice on what you could have done better. All the big names in Tarantulas on youtube will tell you it's a 50/50 chance when pairing Tarantulas .. this outcome can happen to them also. And don't blame yourself.. you did nothing wrong. It is sad for the male yes. Not all parings are perfect. Anyways.. take care and enjoy your Hobby :D
Tarantula Kat already came to his defense too, I'm sure Richard of the Tarantula collective, and petko from dark den would agree with her comments
@@tempeverything1641 Yeah that was like my comment on this video. And the comment way down below by
EarthsGeomancer .. I told him to please post his video of his Tarantula paring. I wish people would stop taking their stance on themselves being self proclaimed Tarantula Experts. Alex certainly knew the risk. It's a gamble anytime a person pairs Tarantulas for breeding. I've been following Alex and subscribed since he first started . He didn't even have to post this video, but he did and I thank him for it.
I once saw a psycho male who jumped the female, and killed her! Never thought, THAT would happen..!🤯🤦♂️
Ya it happens. My male A.geniculatua male got munched by my friends female.
He was just an old guy and this pairing seemed so forced. If you have doubts then don't do it. This was totally avoidable.
A man's gotta do what he has to do what he's gotta do for content
