Correct it is indeed the same tune as Loch Lomond. There are many instances of similar tunes and themes between Scottish and Irish music. You should check out the High Kings version of red is the rose.

The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond has a sad meaning, the parting of love through death, which does not go with weddings I feel. "Where me and my true love will never meet again".
