  • The King Road BLM 14-day free dispersed camping area is located immediately prior to entering the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge and approximately 38 miles south of Quartzsite, Arizona. Free camping at the King Road BLM provides a scenic mountain views that make for a spectacular backdrop. Saguaro cacti and teddy bear cholla abound. AT&T cellular service was 5G and clocked in at 66.1 Mbps download speed and 14.4 Mbps upload speed. Verizon cellular service clocked in at .60 Mbps download speed and 9.53 Mbps upload speed and was barely usable. The campsite I selected is big rig friendly and is located at grid coordinates: 33.2585928, -114.2310256. Once on King Road take a right turn at grid coordinates 33.2590085, -114.2306706 to access the aforementioned campsite. There is plenty of space for multiple big rigs at this location. Took some time to do some daytime backpacking within the wild and scenic Kofa. Thoroughly enjoyed our boondocking stay at the King Road BLM.

Love the kofa mountains. In 1906 the king mine was abandoned most of the miners moved to Phoenix.

Was drawn to deer hunt in KofA in the late 80s, very beautiful but extremely rugged. Hiking up a canyon, I passed within 30 feet of a bighorn ram who just stood there and watched me pass by. Damn......no camera! He figured I wasn't a threat and just stood there the whole time and didn't move till I got past him.
Haven't been back since then, but the Forest Service watched everything closely and was extremely strict on the rules like no camping beyond 75 feet from the road. Got back to camp one afternoon and found a $100 ticket on my windshield for being 78 feet off the road. Talk about tough customers!

Lots of mule deer and bighorn sheep if you're lucky. The usual desert denizens like javelina, snakes, ground squirrels and roadrunners to name a few are in plentiful supply

So was 4x4 needed on the roads/trails? if yes, do you need AT tires?
