  • Heather says that Trumpers have bought into an alternative reality and that we are, at this moment, on a knife’s edge. She’s an historian and not a clairvoyant. But she’s also an activist, doing all she can to spread the word through historical analysis. Beat that, Trump!

In the 1980’s, my big big huge beef was that Rush was on the radio. It wasn’t due to a cause he was drawn to, he fell into it. It had no merit to him, it was a way to be relevant and make money. He certainly did make money, (reported worth at the time of death: 600 million). My 🥩 was that he held a ‘captured’ audience, particularly in TX, where I was at the time (don’t ask).
A decade earlier, I got what I can only say was a psychic hit about DJT. It suddenly occurred to me that he was going to make ALL of our lives miserable. I scoffed at my own intuition because I couldn’t imagine how he could and would have such an impact. But intuition for me is in my nature and when it’s strong, it’s correct.
I would not have been able to put together in my mind all of the pieces that needed to fall into place for him to wreak havoc. Yes, I totally agree with you Al that had Rush not pursued talk radio, softening up those vulnerable to his bold and incendiary rhetoric, basically yelling at his audience through a microphone, there would have been NO DJT disturbance in the force field.
However there were a few other pieces that brought him center stage. He had to APPEAR to be a business success. He had to become widely known and be some sort of celebrity. He also had to have some advisers and fixers with a bit of IQ guiding him with public image and in the political arena, people who know how to sell appearances. And he had to have a niche, like birtherism. Relentlessly pursuing that the first black (half black) president did not qualify to be POTUS due to place of birth was just the ticket. And then he had to have the backing of rich donors and heads of state who would NEVER have otherwise supported him If it were not that he had became the one who would do what they wanted whether it be about abortion, appointing justices, covering for their lies, enacting and supporting certain bombastic, harmful policies, etc.
I am not one who thought DJT wanted the presidency in 2016, or thought he had a chance in hell. I don’t think he had a master plan or much of a plan. Rather like Limbaugh, he fell into the broader notch that was preempted by what started as a narrow niche, railing against Obama, in his case. In Limbaugh’s case railing against the many of the most vulnerable and marginalized.
Without the hodge podge coalition of various segments coming together, oligarchs, Christian nationalists, white supremacists, China, Saudi Arabia, Putin and many other bottom feeders (who would not have otherwise given him the time of day) he still would not have ended up being a player with electoral viability on the world stage. But yes, I blame Rush for preying on those who actually believed that his vitriolic rants had validity. Eventually, ranters come to believe what they knew at first was just a con, they play a role until their con suit fits like it’s their own skin.
I was long gone from Texas when Air America Radio hit the airwaves. I listened to you and Rachel back then (didn’t know who she was but was awesomely impressed with her). I was greatly relieved that the crazed commentary on AM radio was no longer all that was on the dial without any sane and relevant commentary and pushback. But then when it folded, the airwaves were once again consumed with those who raggedly followed in Rush’s template, setting us up for what is no longer unimaginable.
Truly those were just the preliminary days. Now we have what I think many GOPers wanted to foment for decades, a divided and pliable environment on the verge of operating without constraints, without regulations, without laws, without accountability, without oversight, rules or consequences. In fact the precipice for this is now in sight. But be careful all you who secretly enjoyed January 6, 2021. In an animated cartoon the word is SPLAT! The problem with destroying things of value and the desolation of everything around you is that you also destroy yourselves.
I’ll finish with Joan Walsh giving her best analysis as to the real Rush: “… his right-wing schtick became an act. It made him fabulously wealthy, and then he couldn’t kick it.”
I couldn’t agree more. All of those downwind of Limbaugh know what his remaining stench smells like, they can follow it easily everywhere it leads, and they do. They want what he was having, the tearing down of America and Americans for fame, fortune, kicks, and a sense of false power (yes many of them do realize it’s false). This is what happens when mostly “teenage boys“ in men’s bodies are allowed to fester together secretly fomenting hate in their states of arrested development while in bedrooms and then boardrooms and eventually platforms with microphones all across the country, hoping to blow up the world - often just to see what it looks like when they set off the explosives.
PS thanks for having Heather on again, what a wisened trooper.

I remember back when I had a tube tv and UHF channels I saw Trump advertising a kind of scheme that was getting government grants to buy property and flip it and make profit. Great episode, love you both! A question…why can’t we expand the Supreme Court? We’ve had 9 justices forever, and our population has increased by nearly 100 million in the last 50 years. Can’t we add justices based on population and the fact that we have 13 circuit courts, shouldn’t we have 13 justices? These are not political justifications for expanding the court, but based on population increases and number of circuit courts.

Democrats need a new new deal. We should have an education revolution. Equal access to job training and higher education based on talent, ambition, interests and a willingness to work, not based on your finances. Instead we encourage the opposite by subsidizing low skills jobs with welfare benefits. Equal access will level the playing field. It will pay for itself just like bridges highways and other infrastructure. Thanks to FDR we have a safety net. Americans want opportunity not handouts.

Dr. Richardson is perhaps our most important voice in the process of understanding the principles of how the United States has evolved and become the phenomenon with which we grapple in our times. It is my belief that her importance lies precisely in her constantly reminding us of the principles of democracy and how it has been subverted by the special interests of the few who wish to impose their version of the 'good and proper life' on everyone. It is only by repeatedly referring to the compass of democratic principles, as she so accurately portrays them, that we can avoid becoming "lost in the weeds" of political argumentation. This was a very interesting conversation because it exemplified veering constantly away from articulating her book's narrative of democratic principles into those weeds. Granted, the devil is in the details, so credit must be given to Mr. Francken for his efforts here. However, as a supposed interview of Dr. Richardson about her book, which I'm assuming was the purpose, this missed the mark. She deftly went with the flow of his weedy narrative and used it fairly successfully to demonstrate the ideas in the book, and so congratulations to her for that. On the other hand, this podcast can serve as an example of how easily deflected we can be by an imbalanced emphasis on the details, while wandering away from the principles which are involved.

🎯 The Dem party, though, had sold it's soul to corporate CEO donors when Bill Clinton was president. Going to the right then, in the 90s, Democratic party leadership lost a lot of leftwing supporters because they saw they weren't being represented with free higher education, Universal healthcare, green economy now & into our future, taxing the very rich and many other progressive policies that virtually all other developed countries have enjoyed for decades.
THEN, we get hit with oligarchs power exploding with 2010 Citizens United.
When the progressive left is turned off, & no longer votes for Democrats but 3rd parties that go nowhere, Dem party leaders don't do anything now to get them back.
I would bet anything that with this major issue of womens' privacy rights being a threat to them, Dem party establishment say, "Screw progressives, we now have many rightwing females joining in to vote blue--atleast for the president." And they are satisfied with that. Dem party leadership--establishment Dems don't think they have to do any work to do.
I don't see Biden changing his pro-war stance on the Middle east at all.
I say this based on the total lack of interest Dem establishment have with being more progressive:
Ex. When Obama was president, though he ran on a progressive platform, he appointed nothing but staunch conservative pro-corporate advisors like Rahm Emanuel.
Rahm was caught on a hot mic saying, "F*** progressives." No surprise.
Many of the economic advisors Clinton had like Larry Summers, Obama brought in.
Obama, Day 1, was trying to find bipartisan ways of cutting our PRECIOUS(!) social safety net programs with his Simpson-Bowles Commission.
Obama even brought in Alan Simpson who was a retired Rethuglicon who made it clear while he was in Congress how much he HATED Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and any program that helped poor & middle-class Americans.
      WTF.
It wasn't just one thing that caused us to disintegrate in America. Personally I vote blue every damn chance I get as I am terrified of the criminal, corrupted reichwing, fascist party but also am sick & tired of mediocre Democrats that only want to appeal to corporations & their CEOs.
Many Americans feel this same way, now, too.

By their actions, and don't actions speak louder than words? But conservatives today are promoting by reversing our rights, one by one to have US be a country that only rich, white, male landowners have all the rights.
In fascism, as Al read off, hierarchy is very integral to their way of life. Going back in a time when that existed is back to the 1850s or earlier, not 1950s as some liberal talk show hosts like to claim.
Their goal is scarier than we even want to admit.

Where did Americans expect democracy would finally reside in the hearts and minds of those most in support after seven decades of nearly unfettered consumer capitalism culture?
Those of both political parties helped trivialise the vote when it suited them, made it difficult to vote even when there was enthusiasm, allowed gerrymandering to skew outcomes, halted civic lessons for most school children upon when reaching voting age never knew who their respective congressional representatives were nor what responsibilities they were legally required to fulfil. The populace was encouraged to follow celebrity over politician, wealth over reason and responsibility while ignoring anyone they may consider a wrong skin colour or gender. Where could these pursuers and promoters of democracy have expected this all to lead but an old, fat, white, male billionaire descend down an elevator of a gaudily gilded hotel with an x- model in tow? Anaesthetised by massive consumer indulgence, a nearly endless stream of distracting fantasy entertainment, the marshalling of its best talent promoting a targeted PR campaign to declare itself ‘ a shining beacon of light’ for a struggling world to embrace; it’s no wonder that even the most ardent supporters of democracy would weaken.
And now the well meaning American electorate acts surprised. America spent decades trying to change other countries to follow, not in their footsteps but their image. As with many well orchestrated PR campaigns (propaganda) it wasn’t without some success. Now its failure will be theirs as well. My question is America going to own this failure, spend what little righteous currency in still retains and take this moment in history to help a planet in peril or throw what remains yet again towards myth making PR?

    We need more congressional districts.
System was based on the House of Representatives being the People’s House.
Since Congress froze the number of congressional districts in 1912, it has just made it easier to gerrymander. As I’ve read it, the people that designed court system envisioned 35,000 being the smallest population of a congressional districts. Now they average 3/4 of a million.

Re: the Biden Economy: Al, I respect you, but your wishy-washy objections regarding the Biden economy is EXACTLY why Democrats leave Americans with the idea that Republican are better at the economy than we are. Do you think for an instance that ANY Republican wouldn't be beating their chest if the economy performed HALF as well under their policies. Regarding inflation, this has been a GLOBAL issue. PLEASE stop being a part of the problem and start talking about the GOOD (and improving) economy we have thanks to Biden's policies.

While I agree with you that leftwing talk show hosts should be cheerleaders for Biden in 2024, I have seen & from my own life, see that just promoting the great stock market gains or lower unemployment has it's limits!!
The left needs to message what fascism is, that Rethuglicons are fascists and whatever way of life you live today will all be gone if any Rethuglicon takes the helm.
Not teaching proper history & Civics in our schools anymore has left us ignorant of our past & how to use it to fight our present nightmare.
Democratic party leaders need to paint a picture of exactly what Rethuglicons would do to our lives--the rights we'd have taken away should any reichwinger get the presidency. Economy talk is boring now, it doesn't apply to my life directly, if you're poor and struggling. There are 10s of millions who are.

My life was saved by the ACA when I got cancer, pity that the Democrats couldn't have made the case for it stronger, millions of Americans got coverage, some for the first time, many for the first time in years, and on top of that Rubio and others managed to squeeze the Law enough that many of the cost saving measures were stripped from the bill. Why can't Democrats do a better job of informing Americans about their ideas?

    • @andreah6379
      @andreah6379 8 місяців тому

Why aren't Democrats fighting back, acting stronger knowing The People stand behind them whenever--if ever, they fought for them?
I basically know why: corporate greed. And Citizens United, 2010 which gave the greedy rich & CEOs even more political power over The People.
I fear Democratic party leadership sees more reichwing women coming over to the left and doesn't give a crap to losing more and more progressive American voters. This can easily happen if/when SCOTUS decides to chop off more of our rights, like right to contraception, or if Roe is reversed federally by them.
You can be sure those 6 sociopaths on SCOTUS are drooling to subjugate women, minorities even more than we could possibly imagine.
If that happens, don't expect anything will get better in our lives. Democratic party leadership already is too conservative for me. That's why so many Americans have left the party. It's only because they have ppl like Katie Porter or Cori Bush, & Jamaal Bowman, etc...that I stay hopeful. When progressive voters leave for say, the Green party, we only hurt ourselves more.
We need more progressives in Dem party to takeover the establishment that play to the greedy rich & corporations over us.
BTW: Obama was never a progressive, so I'm not surprised he didn't even put up a fight for a public option!!
His wife was a corporate lawyer, as in worked to PROTECT corporations & their greedy CEOs.
Obama even tried to cut our PRECIOUS social safety net programs Day 1. There was so much chaos in our country at that time, most Americans didn't even know how Obama was trying to cut our throats. He created the Simpson-Bowles Commission for that very purpose. Here we were suffering from the damage of corporate greed in 2008, from Geo W's deregulation PLUS giving away about $800 billion back to Wall Street bankers after they screwed our economy, left millions homeless, & with no conditions on those greedy bankers! while regular Americans suffered.
Obama didn't help us then, made no changes to Bush's plans, either.
If you want to see change for The People, then we need more progressive Democrats in power, in majorities everywhere. Unless & until that happens little will improve with conservative Democrats.
One thing though, NO way should Rethuglicons be in power anywhere!
Reichwing politicians are corrupted criminals & as we hear now, fascists.😮

In Australia, electoral boundaries are determined by an independent body, the Australian Electoral Commission, who will alter the boundaries from time to time based on population data. There is no political influence in this process. Voting in federal and state elections is compulsory, as is registration on the electoral roll. The Electoral Commission is highly respected. The system works really well. Challenges to election results are almost unknown.

Reichwing billionaires have sold their spew to ppl who love to hate, like Evangelicals, white nationalists, Proud Boys, etc...

Plus 1500 reichwing hate+lies propaganda radio stations nationwide & playing their messages 24/7, plus reichwing social media sites, like Dumpty's own, and X/Twitter to name a few.

🎯 You are absolutely spot on!
What The People need to do is run progressives & vote & win!
With the middle-east & US in crisis over the war machine, many younger voters and progressives, some black ppl, too are becoming less engaged with Biden as our leader. This is dangerous.
Despite what some leftwing talk show hosts claim, Biden is sticking by the rightwing authoritarian in Israel. Big mistake! Like Hillary in 2016 who ignored opportunities to cut her opposition in shreds, she acted too politely, never fought back and didn't think she needed to push for anything progressive. She lost those swing states!
We now have AIPAC which is a extremely well-funded conservative group going after our progressives in the House! This group plans to drop over $100 Million to run campaigns against all the Democrats that actually fight FOR us.
Very few ppl are talking about this.
As much as the vast majority of Americans need progressive programs as you stated, the fight we have is against the extremely greedy wealthy. And while we have the voters, the other side has the MSM.
We must keep fighting to keep those progressives & make them much larger to get what we need.
Too many young ppl don't understand how our government works. Some are giving up now, either not voting or voting for whoever is a 3rd party. Progressives need unity in a major way. Only becoming the majority of Dem party will get us there.
We have a lot of work to do. 23 or 24 Democratic senators are up for re-election in 2024, alone.

Yes, definitely Citizens United made us even more of an oligarchic mess but leftwing voters not voting had been a problem in all the previous decades up to the 1980s. Raygun put us on a 3rd world trajectory when he promoted the meme of economic "trickle down theory," that gave conservatives more power & more of our taxpayer $$$$$.
Raygun dropped the top tax rates on the greedy richest from 74% down to 25% while raising taxes 11 times!! on ppl like myself just starting the middle-class.
Not to mention, Raygun's war on unions, which up until then, created the middle-class.
Our working class had been about 25% public unions up until 1980. Today, because of Raygun and conservatives embracing trickle down, only about 5-6% public unions exist in the workplace.
Trillions of taxpayer dollars have been transferred up to the greedy richest from the poor and middle-class workers since then. Inequality in our country has never been worse.
Losing all that amount of wealth and our "American dream," naturally many Americans lost hope in both parties. One thing that guarantees Rethuglicons winning is low voter turnout.

So were are we now? A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance; From abundance to selfishness; From selfishness to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage.
