  • With so much happening on the campaign trail, we turn to Jamelle Bouie for his first visit to the podcast. We discuss Donald Trump and JD Vance's attacks on the truth with their harmful comments on Haitian immigrants and their lies about abortion. We look at different Senate races around the country and what they could mean for the next President. And we get into Project 2025 and examine just how far Republicans are willing to let Trump go should he become President again. Spoiler alert: it would be terrifying!

This pod consistently rises above the level of mediocrity.
I might need to raise it in my estimation.

I love this guy. This is the first time I've heard Jamelle Bouie speak! Maybe we can get the filibuster done next year when we no longer have Manchin & Sinema. I still hope you decide to return to the Senate, Al. Sanity is always in fashion, especially now.

Al, I'm one of many many people who lost power thanks to Hurricane Helene. It's too hot to sleep, so I'm sitting in my car, charging my phone. I treated myself to a little computer time (even though I'm trying to save all kinds of power) and you popped up! Lots of scary things in your podcast tonight, but a relief for a minute from my personal problems. Of course, America's problems are my problems as well. Thanks anyway. Fascinating discussion with Mr. Buie.

It can't be stressed enough that the public needs clear and concise explanations of how tariffs work and who pays what because trump has told millions of people that foreign countries will be paying the U.S. government money for imposing such tariffs. He tells them we will be taxing foreign countries which is so blatantly false and misleading. People are buying what he says because they have no idea what tariffs are or why sometimes they are good for U.S. businesses to compete in the market but not for raising revenue for the government.

Instead of running on universal healthcare - which would have passed if Roosevelt had survived to the end of WWII - we should stress universal citizenship education.
I don't remember having a class called civics when I went through junior high and high school in the 1970s. There was Model UN as an afterschool program, but that shows you how screwed up the UN is - it doesn't tell you how america works politically.
The rumor mill was constantly saying, "Your vote doesn't count" when I was growing up. Nothing was effectively counteracting that, and no one was trying to track down where that nonsense was coming from.
No one is informed that Congress is written into the US Constitution to be hobbled and slow by white, landed gentry, who didn't mind viewing human beings as cattle/rabble/unruly mobs or owning them as slaves.
I found that out after graduating high school - that should have been in my junior high texts. I had a class in high school called Buying a House. We should have had one for running for congress and passing a bill. Instead, I learned the bill part as a Saturday morning cartoon - along with reminding me about conjunctions. If the species is smart enough to learn about bills being in committee by musical animation, then we should be able to follow how the rest of the government works in a teacher led class.
But both parties want to keep that a mystery apparently so we as "citizens" don't worry our pretty little heads about it. 🙄

on tariffs the important part was never mentioned .. so if the 'typical' family pays an extra $4000/year .. where exactly does the money go ?? does it make its way into the US treasury ? and then who decides how and where does it get spent .. ? only telling us that it is bad and leaving out the other 'detail' doesn't make it an explanation .. we expect more from this analysis ..

Lately, I have been having visions of ALF as the monorail conductor, and ALF is too short to operate the monorail, nor is he smart enough. ALF crashes the train, the train full of dogs that look like ALF 🐕 alf is the original cat eating illegal 👽

It's politically self-defeating to give money to lower/middle income folks because it causes inflation. They quickly forget the benefits (more money) but remember the pain (higher prices), even if the benefits are greater than the pain. Giving money to the rich is politically brilliant because they use the extra money to buy assets. The stock market goes up, voters are happy, and upper income voters remember their benefactors.

Al and team, I haven’t started listening yet but already I am thrilled you are featuring THIS NYT Op-ed writer. They continue to employ one who has deeply failed at being a responsible voice. I am baffled as to how such a person could continue to be given a platform. Yes, I am referring to you, Michelle Goldberg. Off I go to listen to this one which I am sure will be a great one.

Migrants are willing to do anyting to start a life in America and picking fruit is one of those jobs, a job most American's won't do... So my question is this... If Tr*mp deports 30 million people (give or take), who is going to pick the tomatoes to make all of the ketchup he puts on his food? (and walls)...

Finally, he's trusted to honor and respect golf rules - and to have a modicum of decency and character.
