I want someone to discuss with me why the shot of Ed crying in Stede’s quarters is so tragically beautiful and impactful and why I masochistically seek it out at least once a day
omg I have the same question. I have an obsession with this scene and I can't sleep until I watch it at least once.. this is so painful but I can't stop watching it
Some thoughts: -Ed had been starting to heal from the heart break because he was able to openly talk about his feelings with the crew and it led to finding positive outlets and bonding activities. We even see him cleaning up his depression mess right before Izzy's words drag him back into his hurt. So now that he has to be "Blackbeard" publicly all the time, there is no one he can share his feelings with and he has to bury it all inside until he is alone. -Lighthouses have been associated with Stede all throughout the show, he and Mary were told to be lighthouses to each other in other to guide each other's life. Ed points out a less positive interpretation, that lighthouses are something you are meant to stay away from lest you crash on the rocks of the shore. So it's easy to see that he may Stede as his lighthouse in both the positive and negative sense.
I think at least partially because male protagonists in film and TV are so rarely allowed to openly grieve and cry on screen beyond glassy eyes or one noble tear, especially swashbuckling adventure types. Especially over something so "weak" / sentimental / low-stakes as rejected love. And Taika acts it so well. The cinematography helps too. He's only partially illuminated, much like the lighthouse's light is dangerously small or limited. His posture with his legs pulled up, trying to protect himself. And compared to the previous outside shots of him in "Kraken" mode, it shows he's still vulnerable and human when he's alone. There's still part of him that hopefully Stede can reach in this upcoming season.
I feel you on that one. For me it's how deep his pain is. It's not a small, holding it in cry, it's not loud sobs, it's this deep pain pouring out of this man. It's both so sad and so beautiful. 😢❤
I love how the dialog in Mary's speech lines up with the flashbacks: "We expose each other to new things, new ideas..." "Next one goes through your fucking eyeball!"
Someone on twitter pointed out how Stede thought of that moment when he was realizing he was in love with Ed, and said "mark me down as scared and horny" 😂
There's a scene when he says he's scared of spiders so he got a spider tattoo on his hand thinking it'd cure that but every time he sees it he freaks out so that's why he wears the gloves lol😂
i love them so much, if they don't get a happy, wonderful, gay ending sipping tea with 7 sugars and a splash of milk i will personally sue David Jenkins
Between this show and Good Omens Season Two, I'm a touch homicidal myself, and I call for both fandoms to combine in a class action suit against Jenkins and Neil Gaiman for emotional distress!
i'd just add the scene where their feet touch when they're tied up on the deck of the ship just after he says "never left" and the scene where Stede is watching Ed and that rowdy guy on the beach and narrating what they're doing bitterly and not letting go of the telescope
All I want next season is back to little montages of the crew hanging out casually and Stede and Ed having drinks and laughs on the deck, and I’ll be happy forever 😍
2:33 had me frozen. I had to pause to process because tears were streaming down my cheeks from sensory input. It was so funny that I couldn't breathe. I was looking around my empty room, like "does no one understand how funny this is?" GENIUS. PURE GENIUS.
8:15 i just ADORE blackbeard's little gasp. I feel he hadn't shown that fabric to no one, stede's was the first, and he didn't even knew why Ed loves it so much, but still made it even more special. I just love their dynamic and how vulnerable Ed was in the very second/third day they were together. Looking back, i honestly feel a little silly to not anticipate that they were already in love with each other even before the kraken incident... UGH I JUST LOVE THEM SM I COULD GO ON AND ON TALKING ABOUT THEM😭😭 I hope Ed won't kill Stede in season two...only punch him once♡
oh and also, THE CLOSE UP Ed did? LIKE THEY LITERALLY ALMOST KISSED AND THAT DRIVES ME INSAAAAANE LIKE SIR YOU BARELY KNOW HIM AND ALREADY WANTS TO KISS HIM?!??!?!?!?!??? WHAT IS THIS SHOW.
Can I just say that the decision to use so much Debussy throughout this series was very much appreciated and added a beautiful background to some beautiful moments.
This is edited so well in such a surprising way, like the falling guy turning into another falling guy turning into the piano? So unnecessary for a UA-cam clip combo and yet you blessed us with it regardless
I can’t wait to inevitably come back to this video after Season 2, and just marvel at how…tame this season will be in comparison. Because I think we can all sleep soundly knowing that S2 will be even more chaotic then S1, and this season had Buttons mouthing off fish names while completely ignoring a tree getting blown out of the ground and Lucius screaming “FUCK THE BEACH!”.
I bought one month of hbo max just to watch this show and I rewatched it until the last day I had the subscription. Dude. Watch it you will be addicted.
I did the same, just watched compliations before. Then got HBO and I told myself I'll watch 1 or 2 episodes maybe. YO I literally ended up binging all episodes in one go . It's just THAT good. So so good. I can't emphasize this enough
11:02 IT MAKES ME SO MAD that i noticed we were f*cked when stede pursed his lips like that......... but i just IGNORE IT. Bc i really wanted to believe he wasn't hesitant
All of these scenes live rent-free in my mind especially the one where Blackbeard says “fuck you nature!” and kills the snake & yells FUCK YOU at it Lmaoo😂😂
SPOILER ALERT Basically, in the final episode of season 1, Stede Bonnet returns home after having abandoned his wife and children to be on the sea. To Stede's horror, he finds out that his wife, Mary, has been sleeping with her art instructor, Paul, while he's been away. At one of Mary's art showings, Stede shows up drunk and causes a scene. Paul kindly tries to subdue him, but (using the pirate aggression that Blackbeard taught him while at sea) Stede ends up pulling a knife on him. He almost immediately snaps out of his drunken rage quickly apologizes to Paul.
“No, I’M Blackbeard. Shhh.”
Stede: “I honestly don’t know if I’m scared or horny.”

“Unhand me or bleed” has got to be one of the most Blackbeard lines that Stede has ever uttered, I love it
Taiki Waititi has an amazing ability to shown all emotions through his eyes and his eyes alone
A very empathic soul right there.
the way Ed has a snake tattoo but completely jumps into full on panic-rage mode the moment he encounters a real one 🤣
