I love it when classically trained musicians react to Nightwish, and fully appreciate the musical genius of Tuomas Holopainen, and indeed the rest of the band.

Wow, really, one of the best reaction/musical breakdowns I've ever seen! Thank you....... Their complex time signatures are so integral to their music, and it is NOT easy to break that down, and you did it so so well...... Also your music theory is awesome, showing how Tuomas uses subtle nods to modal shifts and secondary dominants, frequent key changes etc, ...... He truly is genius like no other in modern genre's,...... so steeped in classical trappings. One thing for you to know is that those WERE horns, but not plated by Tuomas on his Kronos keyboards. Nightwish performs to backing tracks that are written by Tuomas but arranged by a famous arranger that the name eludes me at the moment, and performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The vocal chorus parts are also performed by a famous choir as well that someone will recall I'm sure.
Floor is just truly a once in a lifetime talent, really a force of nature ..... In every way...... I mean just look at her, lol, her physical presence and stature COMMANDS attention on stage or anywhere for that matter, and no doubt her physical self has a huge effect on her sound and vocal abilities, resonance, breath control, stamina etc...... You touched on what not many people recognize is SO difficult about trying to reproduce or cover the vocals on this song, ( actually a lot of Tuomas's compositions ) and that is that like you said it's riddled with tons of chromatic half step intervals that are all over the place, that jump to higher or lower intervals that are not common in most genre's of music....... Floor just navigates these with such ease and PRECISION! And it's RAPID fire! A lot of people gloss over her tuning ability, i know you don't because in your genre it is expected, but wow, Floor's pitch is just dead on ...... and all those super rapid half steps up, down, up, up, down, big jump, ...... SUPER easy to get pitchy right?! And she's just not even thinking about, ....
Just the performance. Of course the middle, my God, glorious ...... she never ceases to give goose bumps and tears..... and the end ...... the vocalizations ...... ugggh! That mouth and the sound that just flies out...... I don't think I've ever heard a voice that sounds so open, and free, ...... Her creativity is just simply not limited by her vocal ability in any way.

Great to see tou back with another NIGHTWISH reaction! At some point, you have got to react to
NIGHTWISH - The POET and the PENDULUM, Wembley Arena 2015,
A masterpiece in 5 movements, five stages of grief, very dramatic, like a mini opera, many different vocal styles, amazing performance.
    and
NIGHTWISH - The GREATEST SHOW on EARTH, Tampere 2015
The performance lives up to the title of the song.

That "opera style" part in 31:13 is actually in the album a choral part that Floor decided to sing live herself. This song was sung originally by Annete Olson, their previous singer that Floor was (at the time this concert was recorded) subbing. Great reaction / breakdown, as usual! You should check their song called "Shoemaker". Floor does some vocal acrobatics with melody and breathing. For a vocalist it is a very busy song.

Extremely fast verses with rapid-fire lyrics and not much room to breathe is bit of a signature for Nightwish, and it's only gotten more so in recent albums. Tuomas has pushed Floor's vocal agility to the limits, more so than he has remotely challenged her range or sustain - everyone who has heard their latest single masterpiece "An Ocean Of Strange Islands" will know what I mean!

Good one! Even as an amateur musician I can appreciate the incredible effort it must take to get on stage night after night operating on this level. I have worked at the opera and observed them, only a few of a house is called upon to work at this level. In their nicely regulated buildings, not a random bus stop of a stage. Floor is such professional and bad ass. She must have worked so hard to get there and stay. All my respect l.

Thank you for the fantastic reaction/analysis, love the enthusiasm and that you really put in the work and how you put your knowledge in words in a way that even I can understand. Loved every second of this. I'm not educated in music theory so I don't know exactly why I connect with Nightwish so strongly and this makes me understand it a bit better. I just never get bored of these songs and I feel like I can always discover something new. They are full of surprises, but I can't pinpoint what they are and why is it different to some other music. Like this song is so catchy and easy to sing a long to the melody instantly that it feels like it must be simple, but somehow it doesn't get boring after multiple listens, so maybe it isn't. Your explanation is very helpful.

But when he go that Metallica and Guns and Roses consert in US where he was exchange student, he described it being "allmost religious experince" and "something change here (in brain)"...he said when Guns n Roses start playing after Merallica, he didnt care, he was still completely in "Metallica high"..

    Jess, maybe I could help a little. . . . . . . . . . .
We might have told you already but it might help you to know Tuomas uses several pseudonyms to refer to himself in various Nightwish songs which he writes from experiences, observation or imagination, he says he is a man with a boy's heart, a grown-up Peter Pan, and you will see that directly in places and when he uses boy narrators sometimes in place of himself. Digging into his lyrics is almost a second bite of the cherry.
He will also use poet, dreamer, writer/song writer or ocean soul - Tuomas has an affinity for the ocean, he wanted to become a marine biologist; keep all this in mind for later, it will help.
So here, "A writer by a fire. . . . . ." Tuomas is speaking to you directly, he is the story-teller, the “writer by the fire” - "Took a journey into a child-man’s heart" would be Tuomas remembering the childhood stories, the Peter Pan escapades of his imagination and fascinations, but the boy has grown up from being a Peter-Pan, the crib is empty.
    I am:
the voice of Never-Never land, the empty crib, the journey, the destination, the home, Tuomas says, he's taking you back to his childhood fascinations.
Floor sings the bridge "Neverland, innocence, dreams of every man. . . . . ." in a high operatic head voice, a pitch you might expect from a very excited small boy.
Now, go look at all the lyrics and the references to the childhood classic stories and it all drops into place; it's one of the songs where it is easy to dig inside Tuomas' metaphoric lyrics and unravel them.
(Edit: Brilliant song analysis you did, interesting and informative,)

  • @finnishculturalchannel
    @finnishculturalchannel 7 годин тому

Peter Pan and Neverland definitely aren't the most typical subjects in metal songs. Holopainen however was a huge Disney fan before he even got into listening music. Metallica does refer to Neverland in their song 'Enter Sandman', and as it happened, when Holopainen was in the US as an exchange student, seeing Metallica live in 1992 made him a Metallica fan and got him into metal music. As he tells on this video about his favorite albums: "Levykauppa Äx esittää - Lempilevyni: Tuomas Holopainen".
Being a huge Disney fan, Holopainen has also composed a soundtrack to Disney illustrator Don Rosa's graphic novel 'The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck'. Don Rosa's first impression of Holopainen, when he approached Rosa with the idea of composing the soundtrack, tells how untypical subject Disney is in metal songs. As an introduction to Don Rosa's interview about the project and to a song from that album; Holopainen isn't alone in being a Disney fan in Finland. E.g. the Donald Duck magazine ('Aku Ankka' in Finnish) is one of the most subscribed weekly magazines in Finland. Also-these are in Finnish-but they give a general idea of where Holopainen is coming from with his Disney fandom. First song is a classic Finnish song from 1936 by Georg Malmstén. Greta is his sister. Mickey Mouse is in distress at sea. A sea troll is after him: "Georg Malmstén & Greta Pitkänen ~ Mikkihiiri Merihädässä (1936)" Here her daughter Ragni performs the song in 1973. Coincident, maybe, but who does the sea captain look like?: "Ragni Malmsten - Mikki Hiiri merihädässä 1973". There's also this more recent Club For Five's a cappella version: "Mikkihiiri merihadassa by Club For Five". This beloved classic 'Grease' adaption comic bit is from 1979: "Sinut haluan vain Ritva Valkama & Pentti Siimes Parempi myöhään show". Here are interviews with Don Rosa and then with him and Holopainen about the 'Scrooge McDuck' project: "Don Rosa Aku Ankan toimituksen haastattelussa" and "Aku Ankan toimitus haastattelee: Tuomas Holopainen ja Don Rosa". Holopainen's wife Johanna Kurkela, who is a talented songwriter and a popular artist herself, sings the role of "Glittering" Goldie o'Gilt: "TUOMAS HOLOPAINEN - A Lifetime of Adventure (OFFICIAL VIDEO)".
It's probably the greatest honor for a Finnish Disney fan to have a character based on oneself published in Aku Ankka magazine. Holopainen has had that honor together with his friend Jouni Hyhynen as characters named Hopolainen and Hymynen. You can find a picture of the characters online. Jouni Hynynen is the leader of a band called 'Kotiteollisuus'. Here they perform a song 'Fairytale About Trolls' with Holopainen: "Kotiteollisuus feat. Tuomas Holopainen - Satu Peikoista (LIVE, HIMOS 2010)". Kotitellisuus' version of Killing Joke's song 'Pandemonium' was released on the Killing Joke tribute album along with Metallica's version 'The Wait'. Holopainen took part in the project: "Kotiteollisuus - Pandemonium".
To wrap this up, Metallica took inspiration to 'Enter Sandman' riff from a Finnish band Stone's song 'Get Stoned'. Even Ozzy makes an appearance. The question asked is "What do think about Metallica? What about Stone?". This happened before Holopainen discovered metal music: "Metallica & Stone Rockstop 1988 (Finnish television)" and "Stone - Get Stoned".
And what has Marco been up to. Certainly something extremely metal?: "MARKO HIETALA - Frankenstein's Wife (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)"

There are lots more Nightwish tracks out there waiting just for you. Their new song is a monster and I'm sure you'd enjoy analyzing it eventually. You're a pro, so it benefits everyone. 🔥🤘🔥

26:50 These high notes are not part of the album version because the then-current singer couldn't sing this high. Original album version has only background choir this high but Floor was skillful enough to do it live.

First of all - of all the Storytime reactions this one was INSANELY detailed, I did not expect this level of deepness. Jaw dropping! I learned that I know basically nothing about music, so thank you! :D
    To your comments:
    1) Nightwish uses backing tracks, so the instruments were recorded by a real orchestra. Tuomas plays only some parts.
    2) The operatic section is purely Floor's contribution, it wasn't originally there, Anette Olson cannot sing in operatic style.

@@jessicasopranonotes I wish more reactors offered it, but of course, it all depends on the rig and bandwidth. As a gamer, I run a very hot rig on gigabit fiber. It's pricey, but worth it. 😄

Great breakdown! My unpopular opinion is that the original version of this song with Annette Olzon as the singer is superior to Floor’s version. Floor is great, but this song was written for Anette’s voice and she was perfect on it.
