Took the fear out of what needed to be done for a newbie classic owner non-mechanic. Own a 58 straight 6 Apache. Have someone who will do this for me but hopefully after this will be able to do it myself to keep it running. It's all original so want to keep it that way so have a lot to learn. Thanks!

I have 1977 pontiac grand prix with 400 ind it and it had irritating off idle bog at factory 16 btdc timing. It was unkown to me that the motor might have been rebuild at somepoint so thats why i had it there. We hunted the offidle bog from the carburetor whitout luck and then i figured the engine must have been rebuild at some point and i would be better off checking if the timing is too advanced! We thought first that few degrees wrong cant cause offidle bog... But after trying for a bit i found out it really likes 8btdc. AND NO OFFIDLE BOG. Im so happy now!
i think thats wut my problem is. i have to assist it in starting by pumpin the throttle linkage but once it starts up. it has a bit of high idle and it sounds like might to advanced. my engine is also a rebuild, nd im no mechanic by any means but i think i know jus enought o get me by. but wut u sed makes sense

cheers mate, just had a 2110CC vw motor built that would run rough and spit back through the dual carbs. found it firing on idle at TDC and only advancing to 20degBTDC@3000rpm. hooked up my timing light, ran up the revs to 2500 and adjusted dizzy to fire at 32deg BTDC. Now it idles at 12deg BTDC.

thank you for the awesome video on how to set the timing . i just purchased a nice old chevy truck (1981) ,and im changing all the plugs ,wires, and distributor cap and rotor . i havent done the timing on a vehicle in many years so it was awesome to see someone show me all the steps again .. good job .

A few things. 1.) Thank you for explaining everything (besides how to hook up the light gun). You made it really clear what the degree tabs meant, and what turning the distributor CW and CC would do to the timing. How that equates to when within the down stroke or power stroke the ignition would fire. I really appreciate that. 2.) Your truck sounds amazing. I've got a Olds Custom Cruiser 305 TBI wagon that I love, and I can only wish that one day I'll be able to make it sound as good as yours does. 3.) You stated that the engine was running at 4 degrees before TDC. Is that bad? Would you ever want it at 0 degrees? 4.) What made you want to set it at 12 degrees? How would I know "where I want" the timing to be? Your truck sounded fine at 4 degrees... so I'm a little confused.
+balto d Thank you for you response and kind words. To answer your question there is actually a lot to it. As far as the exhaust it was just open headers. For the timing thing I will make a video in the next day or two to explain it but it really depends and the type of fuel you are running ( octane ) I was running a mix of pump gas and race fuel (110 octane ) so the 110 octane burns slower than pump gas so it requires more advance timing to burn it properly. I will post a video that will hopefully answer your question better. If you need me to clarify something here just ask. Thank you!
conn light gun red and black clips black to gd red to +12volts (battery )take the next cord it gos to plug wire some use#1 i use #6 as you spin eng that gun will flash hold it so you read tdc mark and degree marks easy
Thanks bro my nova was not starting quickly and correctly like it once did plus dying out while driving didn't seem to have the enough power. I adjusted the tdc to a higher setting (to the left) sounds better & starts up like it used to ready to go and fly. Thanks again

Hey Zak Lamb I appreciate the video of how to set the timing on a Small Block Chevy. One of the things that I really wished was for my dad to show me before he passed how to set the timing on my 350. He loved working on these older engines and told me they are super fun engines to work on. He was a master technician for Gm, Ford and a few other automakers. This video helped to clear up several questions I had. Could you do a video on how to install timing chains/ gears for sbc's? I'll be purchasing a timing gear set for my 350 and would love it if you could show me how to install, correct timing if it is off on the timing gear. My engine runs fine but it's worn out and I wanted to put a little more life back into him before I try and rebuild it. Thanks for your help and tech info.

I am nearly 75 years old and it has been over 50 years since I set the timing on a truck. My Penski timing light has been in the attic since we built our house in 1976 .

Thank u for sharing with us ur video I'm having problems with my 1987 Chevrolet monte carlo i changed the distributor but it still out of time i moved the distributor a little bit it turned on but it doesn't stay on for long time i know it has something to do with the timing i just don't know which is the best way to adjust the time on it if u can share any tips how to adjust it i will really appreciate it i like the way u explain everything
@Mrblueroads I would say it sounds more like a starter issue as well when they get old and get hot they tend to need to cool down before they will start. Thanks guys for the help
Good video....I have a 351 w in a 69 Mach....trying to get my initial timing properly set between 12 and 14 TDC. Once that is done and the distributor is tightened back down, how do I set the Total ignition timing> AND.....don't I have to adjust the distributor again? If I do that won't that screw up my idle timing setting? Help me out here Zak
Great video thanks! Stupid question for you. I've got a 750 Holley on a 400 SBC. I've been trying to adjust the carb (which I had rebuilt 2 yrs ago but didn't run last yr so it's been sitting) I've adjusted the idle mixture screws following typical process starting with 1 1/2 turns out and fine tuned using a vaccum gauge to get max vacuum at 15 psi ( thought it should be higher and have checked for leaks). Car stumbles at idle at times and also surges at times but it's also popping occasionally thru the exhause usually on deceleration. Any ideas?
***** Hey, Stevie Ray. Holley carbs are notorious for blowing out power valves. All it take is one good back fire thru the carb, and they're toast. Sounds like yours may be defective. I would start by pulling out a couple of the spark plugs. If they have that dry, black carbon powder on them, you're running rich. Now if they are wet with oil, then you have another problem...usually valve stem seals, on a SBC. Just rub the negative electrode on the palm of your hand, and you can see if it's carbon fouling or oil fouling (do this with the engine cold, otherwise the plugs could be wet from fuel, not oil). For carbon fouling to occur, the fuel in the air/fuel mixture does not completely burn. This can be caused by too much fuel, or not enough spark (as in a defective spark plug or spark plug wire). From your description of the symptoms (surging and popping during decel) I would be more inclined to call your carb the culprit.(However, an exhaust leak at the manifold or header can also cause a pop on decel, especially under rich conditions. Make sure your exhaust is tight.) My approach to diagnosing this type of problem would be: 1) check the plugs, if they're fouled, replace them. 2) make sure the ignition timing is set properly (with the vacuum advance disconnected) 3) Reconnect the vac advance and attempt to adjust the carb idle mixture. Make sure you are idling no higher than 1000 RPM to make this adjustment (600 to 800 is best). If the idle mixture screws seat full lean (clockwise) and the engine doesn't die, you're running too rich...it's the carburetor. So, to check the carb, start by looking down the throat while the engine is running to see if fuel is dripping from the booster venturies (wear safety glasses,and use a bright flashlight). If you don't see anything with the engine running, shut it off and look again at the venturies. If you see any fuel or fuel vapors at all, your float system isn't working right and may need adjusting or replaced. Could also be the needle and seat need replacing. If you see no vapors, odds are, the power valves need replacing. Keep in mind, the content of this reply has been posted assuming that your engine is in sound condition, and basic things like a clean air and fuel filter have been previously ruled out as a possible issue. I hope this helps, and good luck!
@olboothboy on your harmonic balancer or " Damper " there is a line grooved in it. As the light flashes when the cylinder fires that line will show on the timing tab when the light hits it. When you find the line mark it with white or yellow paint maker to see it easier when the timing light flashes on it. Hope that answers your question buddy if not let me know
That wss an awesome video! Great explanation! But i got a question 4 u why is my motor backfiring while running every now n then. Not when i shut it off, but it usually starts right off the bat.
@Phil Jackson what kind of fuel system are you running. This can be timing that is off. May run good on idle but under a load and at higher rpm the total timing could be way off. What size cam and what kind of distributor are you using. I will make a video today to show you a trick with timing marks
Hello your video on timing a SBC was easy to understand, much better then others . My question is i am preparing to start my 1970, 350 ci after a short block on up rebuild with all new parts , is there a way to set the timing say at 12 deg. BTC without starting the engine . By manually setting the timing mark at 12 deg then getting a timing light to flash as i turn the distributor with ignition in the on position ? I have no help and will be busy controlling the motor RPM etc. And would like all parameters to be as close as possible. Any other suggestions would be appreciated .
Really the best way is to find top dead center on the compression stroke on cylinder 1 and rotate it back to 12 degrees. Drop the distributor in pointing to the number one cylinder.
very good video and clear explanation, than you for taking the time, one question for you, what about the RPMs you have not discussed RPMs at all, wouldn't you want to set initial timing at a certain RPM for that vehicle?
Thanks and that's a great question! I'll make a video about that. Engine rpm is a very fluid thing and by that I mean it's not one size fits all. Depending on your build compression, cam, stall, fuel and so on the idle will be different. For a stock motor between 600-800 is a good place to be and shouldn't be allowed to drop below around 500 while in drive. Hope that helps!!!!
Great video! I just bought a 73 pick up with a 360 small block. The hei was done right before I bought it and I'm having issues with throttle when I put it in drive. Truck wants to die and on multiple occasions it has (with a 'pop' coming from under the good). I've learned to feather the throttle before take off. Could this be a timing problem? @axialSXTen CrawlCA If you have a distributor like this and not a coil pack yes. This is a basic foundation for timing on all engines running a similar distributor setup. Keep in mind some manufacturers have strict specifications for stock timing based upon why the engine is being used for compression and even the fuel that it calls for
Your thoughts please, I have a 1975 C20 454 I have modified it a small amount 8.8 compression comp cam XE268. Air gap intake. where do you believe I should set my base timing, total timing? Next I have a edelbrock carb. Should I use the full vacuum port for the vacuum advance? Thanks

Yes great video. I've also as some have said watched about 10 videos and yours is the best for some that's new to setting your timing or some that's it's been awhile. For me it's been awhile. Ty for dumbing it down enough that I get it lol.

Thank u for sharing with us ur video I'm having problems with my 1987 Chevrolet monte carlo i changed the distributor but it still out of time i moved the distributor a little bit it turned on but it doesn't stay on for long time i know it has something to do with the timing i just don't know which is the best way to adjust the time on it if u can share any tips how to adjust it i will really appreciate it i like the way u explain everything

@Mrblueroads I would say it sounds more like a starter issue as well when they get old and get hot they tend to need to cool down before they will start. Thanks guys for the help

Good video....I have a 351 w in a 69 Mach....trying to get my initial timing properly set between 12 and 14 TDC. Once that is done and the distributor is tightened back down, how do I set the Total ignition timing> AND.....don't I have to adjust the distributor again? If I do that won't that screw up my idle timing setting? Help me out here Zak

Great video thanks! Stupid question for you. I've got a 750 Holley on a 400 SBC. I've been trying to adjust the carb (which I had rebuilt 2 yrs ago but didn't run last yr so it's been sitting) I've adjusted the idle mixture screws following typical process starting with 1 1/2 turns out and fine tuned using a vaccum gauge to get max vacuum at 15 psi ( thought it should be higher and have checked for leaks). Car stumbles at idle at times and also surges at times but it's also popping occasionally thru the exhause usually on deceleration. Any ideas?
***** Hey, Stevie Ray. Holley carbs are notorious for blowing out power valves. All it take is one good back fire thru the carb, and they're toast. Sounds like yours may be defective. I would start by pulling out a couple of the spark plugs. If they have that dry, black carbon powder on them, you're running rich. Now if they are wet with oil, then you have another problem...usually valve stem seals, on a SBC. Just rub the negative electrode on the palm of your hand, and you can see if it's carbon fouling or oil fouling (do this with the engine cold, otherwise the plugs could be wet from fuel, not oil). For carbon fouling to occur, the fuel in the air/fuel mixture does not completely burn. This can be caused by too much fuel, or not enough spark (as in a defective spark plug or spark plug wire). From your description of the symptoms (surging and popping during decel) I would be more inclined to call your carb the culprit.(However, an exhaust leak at the manifold or header can also cause a pop on decel, especially under rich conditions. Make sure your exhaust is tight.) My approach to diagnosing this type of problem would be:
1) check the plugs, if they're fouled, replace them.
2) make sure the ignition timing is set properly (with the vacuum advance disconnected)
3) Reconnect the vac advance and attempt to adjust the carb idle mixture. Make sure you are idling no higher than 1000 RPM to make this adjustment (600 to 800 is best). If the idle mixture screws seat full lean (clockwise) and the engine doesn't die, you're running too rich...it's the carburetor.
So, to check the carb, start by looking down the throat while the engine is running to see if fuel is dripping from the booster venturies (wear safety glasses,and use a bright flashlight). If you don't see anything with the engine running, shut it off and look again at the venturies. If you see any fuel or fuel vapors at all, your float system isn't working right and may need adjusting or replaced. Could also be the needle and seat need replacing. If you see no vapors, odds are, the power valves need replacing.
Keep in mind, the content of this reply has been posted assuming that your engine is in sound condition, and basic things like a clean air and fuel filter have been previously ruled out as a possible issue.

@olboothboy on your harmonic balancer or " Damper " there is a line grooved in it. As the light flashes when the cylinder fires that line will show on the timing tab when the light hits it. When you find the line mark it with white or yellow paint maker to see it easier when the timing light flashes on it. Hope that answers your question buddy if not let me know
@brian Myers if you are running an 87 octane fuel and stock motor between 2-8 degrees before TDC will be about right

That wss an awesome video! Great explanation! But i got a question 4 u why is my motor backfiring while running every now n then. Not when i shut it off, but it usually starts right off the bat.
@Phil Jackson what kind of fuel system are you running. This can be timing that is off. May run good on idle but under a load and at higher rpm the total timing could be way off. What size cam and what kind of distributor are you using. I will make a video today to show you a trick with timing marks
Hello your video on timing a SBC was easy to understand, much better then others . My question is i am preparing to start my 1970, 350 ci after a short block on up rebuild with all new parts , is there a way to set the timing say at 12 deg. BTC without starting the engine . By manually setting the timing mark at 12 deg then getting a timing light to flash as i turn the distributor with ignition in the on position ? I have no help and will be busy controlling the motor RPM etc. And would like all parameters to be as close as possible. Any other suggestions would be appreciated .
Really the best way is to find top dead center on the compression stroke on cylinder 1 and rotate it back to 12 degrees. Drop the distributor in pointing to the number one cylinder.
very good video and clear explanation, than you for taking the time, one question for you, what about the RPMs you have not discussed RPMs at all, wouldn't you want to set initial timing at a certain RPM for that vehicle?
Thanks and that's a great question! I'll make a video about that. Engine rpm is a very fluid thing and by that I mean it's not one size fits all. Depending on your build compression, cam, stall, fuel and so on the idle will be different. For a stock motor between 600-800 is a good place to be and shouldn't be allowed to drop below around 500 while in drive. Hope that helps!!!!
Great video! I just bought a 73 pick up with a 360 small block. The hei was done right before I bought it and I'm having issues with throttle when I put it in drive. Truck wants to die and on multiple occasions it has (with a 'pop' coming from under the good). I've learned to feather the throttle before take off. Could this be a timing problem? Can't wait for your next video

If you have a distributor like this and not a coil pack yes. This is a basic foundation for timing on all engines running a similar distributor setup. Keep in mind some manufacturers have strict specifications for stock timing based upon why the engine is being used for compression and even the fuel that it calls for
Your thoughts please, I have a 1975 C20 454 I have modified it a small amount 8.8 compression comp cam XE268. Air gap intake. where do you believe I should set my base timing, total timing? Next I have a edelbrock carb. Should I use the full vacuum port for the vacuum advance? Thanks

I cannot find the dist casting number to see which one I have. do I need to remove the distributor and look under or on the gear? Thanks again for the video.
