My hospital puts an alarm tag on all the babies immediately after birth. The tag has an ID number and the parents are given bracelets with the same number. If someone removes the tag from the baby without it being deactivated, the system alarms and all the doors on the ward lock. Maybe it's overkill, but it definitely gives me some peace as a hormonal, new mother. Having your baby switched or stolen would be devastating.
Mine too. We saw it working too. It was late at night/early morning. My husband was helping me to try to get some rest in the hospital & took the baby for a walk in the bassinet there. He accidentally crossed the line in the hospital without knowing it. The elevators were suddenly locked, the security guard came & about 7 nurses or so were at the hospital door. He was escorted back by another nurse who saw what happened so that as she said they didntackle him. On top of that because of hospital signal, I couldn't get ahold of my husband by calling him. It was quite a story that we talk about, but at least we know they work 😄
Same here. They will not let it come off until you are discharged and they frequently check when they come in to do vitals or if they have to leave with the baby and bring them back.
Thankfully. Some women take them home and get called a cheater later on. That one woman I heard of nearly got divorced and got a maternity test to prove her innocence.
In a UK hospital, they brought me the wrong baby and then asked me if I was sure! When I replied, ‘Yes I am sure, my baby was born with a cleft lip and palate and this baby has no cleft lip and palate and has a Jewish surname’, they quickly wheeled the baby away and I heard them laughing at the nurse’s station. At this point in time, I had been separated from her for five hours (she was in NICU and I was unable to walk) and it tipped me over the edge. I burst into tears and, finally, at midnight a new doctor came and asked me why I was crying and I told her ‘I just want to see my baby!’ After explaining what happened and what I had been through, the doctor stormed down to the nurse’s station and demanded that someone get me in a wheelchair and wheel me straight in to see the baby! Awful awful behaviour from these professionals. 😢
Yeah! I hate to say it but what if you didn’t recognize your own baby!? They all look similar to me when they are a year and under ! It’s a fear of mine … what if I mix up my baby!
She actually did make a reply saying that it actually was another girl they did find out she just had to change the thing that she didn't want people trying to figure out whose baby it actually was so she just said that it was a boy even though it wasn't
Thats why they took a picture of my son directly after birth. I still like to look at that picture and can tell that this is the same person I gave birth to 😊
I don't know, seems like a mom could idenify their child as long as they actually had the chance to visit, hold and cuddle before baby was taken to nursery. Woman are amazing when we give birth we bond with our babies we know their smell, I could see my husbands features in our boy. All I could think about 70p was my husband after a few short minutes of holdinghhhhhbv my child I would know him for life ❤❤
That happened to my grandmother, my uncle got swapped at the hospital, a nurse gave the wrong baby to my grandmother, thankfully she knew right away it was not her son. She noticed the baby didn’t have the birthmark on his leg like my uncle, nobody believed her, saying it’s her baby. So my grandmother screamed at the nurse, nearly beating her up, demanding where her baby was, they finally realized their mistake & give my uncle back, who was about to be discharged with another family. That story traumatized my mom, that’s why at my birth, she screamed at my dad to follow me everywhere & not leaving me alone with the nurses. 😅 same with my little brothers, it became a usual thing to never leave the baby alone at the hospital.
My mom said the best thing to do after having a baby is to examine them all over, not just health reasons but to note any birthmarks etc. It's scary to think of how many times babies were switched before safety /ID measures became routine
This is recent times? All my babies, 1st in 87, had tight bracelets on their wrist and ankle. I had to call off my id number before they would leave the baby with me.

If the mother was using drugs, or even had to be prescribed certain drugs, during pregnancy, then after birth the baby would spend a few days withdrawing from whatever it was. Not really a big mystery lol.
This! I was 17 with a fever immediately after delivery! Buy everytime they put my baby in the nursery, I went in & took him back! My Doctor finally came in an advocated for me! The nurses had been treating me like I couldn't possibly care for my son being the age I was! I saved my 1st babies life at age 9, so I beg to differ! Regardless I had serious reservations about their care! It was a large full nursery, but everytime I saw it it was full with no one in attendance! Newborns were all on their backs, crying & numerous choking! I went rolling babies to their sides, made sure they were OK now & went & raised the house! Everytime the excuse was they were on a shift change! I wondered when they actually worked! Anyhoo, they didn't touch my son after my Dr gave them a stern talking to! He actually raised the roof because they refused to call him when I came into deliver the day before! 4th of July holiday & he was home having a BBQ! We joked the whole pregnancy because I kept saying it was going to be a boy born on the 4th of July. Can't say why, I just knew it to my core! 4th of July however put me 2 weeks over my due date, yee ha! And it was exceptional hot that summer!😂😂 Anyway, he had finally agreed the week prior I could be right & told me to have then call him! They refused, the Dr on call was brutal, and cut me bad, causing a severe infection! Then they kept taking my baby, so this 106° fever ravaged angry bear Momma would go hunting for him! He is now in his 40s & blessed me with 3 amazing grandchildren! ❤
Yes! I had my daughter and she was 8lbs 3 1/2 oz. They brought in this 6lb baby 😮 i was like WTF WHO IS THIS? They checked bracelets and realized thier mistake. 34yrs ago. 🕊️ Miss you my angel. Wish you were still here with me. #suicideawareness
I would demand a private/independent DNA test after that. On the hospitals dime. If they refuse hire a lawyer. I'd seriously consider changing hospitals as well. Totally incompetent. 😮
That might be the American way to address the situation. In countries like the UK (where this seems to be filmed), hospitals are publicly funded & the culture is more likely to be an enquiry to improve future processes than suing each other.
See all these stories shock me because I've given birth 4 times -- 3 in canada and 1 in poland -- and I have NEVER been separated from my child. If ever there was a problem and they needed to go to a different room, I or my husband would accompany the baby. Why do mothers and babies get separated after birth in some countries?
Because I had to have surgery under anesthesia right after delivery. Her dad, who was abroad for work, wasn't at the hospital, so yeah, of course parents get separated from their newborn occasionally at the hospital.
There are many reasons why they would be separated - if the baby or mother is in surgery, if the baby requires an incubator or baby/mother needs intensive treatment or monitoring and is in the NICU or ICU respectively. (In this case the v/o says the baby was in withdrawal) Many new moms, especially if they have had a difficult delivery may also not want to go immediately into 24 hour parenting, so the nurses can take the baby to the nursery for a few hours so mom can have breaks or rest/recover.
Exactly why my daughter had me there with them for the 24 hours post delivery in the hospital. She had to be medicated due to a high blood pressure problem - they wanted to take my G’daughter to the nursery. Nope. That’s not happening. I held that baby in my arms for 8 hours. They wanted to take her to another room to bathe her. OK - I’ll go with her. There was zero possibility we were letting her out of our sight.
😂 my mother in law followed the nurse when she said that she was going to bathe the baby and she was right next to her with every move. Later on the nurse said to me " your mother in law doesn't trust me" I said " she doesn't trust ANYONE with her grandson except my husband I and my father in law 😂. I felt terribly for the nurse 🤦🏿♀️
I actually did! Brought a sharpie into the delivery room when I had my daughter in 2022 and drew a mark on her foot when she was born. I also noticed a birthmark on her ear, so I was glad I had another identifying mark. Good thing she had that birthmark, too, because I had to go into surgery right after delivery and only got her back a few hours later. I was so shocked when the sharpie mark wasn't anywhere! But the birthmark on her ear was. Turns out, they had cleaned her up nicely and taken footprints, so my sharpie mark had inadvertantly been cleaned off. 😊
@@katek6808yea Good point, they will clean your baby and it might come off. Make sure its a permanent marker on sole of foot, but maybe they'd even scrub it off? or try to find any birthmark, or something about the pattern of hair, iris, ear, if toes curl or any 2 have a longer connected at bottom, basically as many of those little common idiosyncratic characteristics that everyone has but we don't all have the same ones together...at least 1 or 2 you can easily verbalize. So its not just like "her profile looks different" because that's hard to describe, and their faces can change a little bit if first seen just after a natural delivery . I guess you could demand a blood test if they don't believe you?
This is the rest guys, There was a nursery her baby stayed at under a special lamp where nurses checked on her baby every 2 hours she was called into this office and apparently the baby was fine and said the baby kept on crying that's why they had the baby even though she was a bit suspicious because her baby girl never cried since she was so unwell at the time, she found out the baby was a boy so she went down an said to the nurses/widwifes and asked them where the baby there face went pale and told her they assumed that baby boy was hers since they looked so similar. She got he baby back an was in shock. The staff never mentioned it for the rest of the time period they stayed there but she said she didn't know who the boys mother was an it remained a mystery.
She also told the story again just to clarify and she said it actually wasn't a boy the only reason she said that was because she didn't want to actually like try to tell people what the differences were between the baby and stuff so that way they didn't try to look for the other baby and stuff so she just said it was a boy even though it wasn't she said that in reality it was another girl that she actually got it was another baby girl in the nurse actually noticed because she went to go get the lamp and then came back and she was like that's not your baby😅
Same happened to me. About to see my son for the first time since surgery & the moment they brought him to me, I knew it wasn't my baby. They thought I was crazy & wouldn't listen to me. I took the baby & went room to room looking for mine. Found him 5 rooms down with a lady who was trying to force him to take her milk. She called nurses who called security and eventually police because I refused to give back my son to the other lady who was refusing to take her own. After 3 more hours they figured out the mistake & admitted I was right. They couldn't figure out how I knew when I only saw my son for 2 seconds before they took him away to finish my surgery. Besides just remembering his beautiful face, my baby was 10lbs 11ozs at birth & the baby they brought me was a little bitty baby, lol. RIP my sweet Michael. 6-11-91 to 5-02-14 ❣️💔❣️
I’m glad Michael had a mama who stood up for him and protected him. How did they figure out the mistake? And did they apologize? I have lost a child too and I am so sorry for the loss of your son. ❤
I understand this isn't practical for everyone, but I refuse to let any hospital take my child to the nursery. I don't understand why more parents don't insist on baby in the room with them.
I'm in canada and most hospitals do not have nurseries at all. Unless your child needs to be in the NICU, That baby is in the room with the recovering mother
I never let them out of my sight at hospital. When it came time for the pku? test I made my husband stay with baby and bring him right back when done. Whenever my babies had to leave my hospital room, I would make my husband watch like a hawk. It was 1993 when all those crazy talk shows ( sally jessy, Phil, Geraldo etc) were on and they had me paranoid.
Nurseries are no longer the standard as close contact with mothers has been proven to be more beneficial to baby's. They are taken for a brief moment to be assessed about their health and while the mom gets stitched or recovering from the anaesthesia. Only if they have a serious condition (ex. pre-mature, baby came out limp and not breathing) will they be separated from the mother. And no, family members are not allowed in the ICU unless they are wearing sterile clothes or wearing sterile gowns. Maybe because I'm from a developing nation, but healthy babies are cared for by both parents in the ward and private rooms. Since we are usually understaffed, nurses don't get the babies from the ward to do any post natal care, parents are told what to do and where to go
I live in the Netherlands. Here after birth baby gets wiped off a bit, hat put on and than a name tag with the mother's name. Reading ain't rocket science.
36 years ago I had a C-section with my first. I did not get to see her as I passed out right afterwards. I woke up early early and they allowed me to see her real quick as they were running test. The next morning the nurse came in looked at my band and babys band and handed her to me. I said this is not my baby... She said what??? I said my baby is bald .. that baby had a head full of black hair. She looked at our bands again.. mine was Hurt the babys was Hunt... 🤦🏼♀️ Luckily I had seen her already or I would have thought she was mine.
How many times had this happened...During depression time my grandmother took ill and the children had stayed at an orphanage for a time When time to pick up the children, the young baby given Grandma was not hers, which she said til the day she died. Baby Anna did not look like any of siblings in later years. 🌹🇺🇸

My first baby was born in hospital and I was told I needed an epidural. That night after birth, the nurses left me alone with my baby 10 feet from me. When she kept crying the nurse came in asked annoyed why I wasn’t feeding her as instructed. I told them I was paralyzed waist down and I couldn’t reach her. My next 2 we’re home births as I refused to go back to the hospital. Unfortunately my 4th was premature and the midwife had to yell at all the nurses and doctors to let us be coz there almost twenty nurses and doctors going in and out of the birthing room and the baby and I were in distress by this point. As soon as he came out, I made sure to lock eyes with him in case they end up giving me the wrong baby. Good thing I did. They took him to NICU without even letting me hold him first. Do not like hospitals at all.
Sorry if they didn't even let you hold him before bringing him to the NICU but every second counts. The only time I've witnessed of a baby coming out of the mom and immediately rushed to the NICU was because everyone already expected the baby's condition was bad and true enough, the baby was limp and not breathing at all and they had to immediately resuscitate the baby. The baby's life comes first before the mother's feelings in emergency cases
@@hinatamercury thank you. He was weak but okay. I, was very weak at the time too. What I meant was it’s crazy chaotic when it didn’t have to be. The traffic in the room as I was pushing a baby out was very stressful for myself and my midwife. It could have been handled better. There were staff walking in and out just to get a peek. Weird.
Nurses swapping babies does happen in many places My dad when I was born was following nurses everywhere to keep an eye on me and make sure I won't be swapped with any other baby that was there at the time I'm pretty sure I am their daughter so great job dad❤😂
For some reason I read that as "when my dad was born I" and I was so confused about how you were present at your dad's birth 😂 I had to reread it like 3 times
I kept my baby with me almost the entire time. He had to go to the nursery because of a bilirubin treatment and I followed as far as I could, but could only see through the window. I saw him through the glass kicking and flailing when the little glasses they wear during treatment had slipped over his nose and mouth! I began beating on the thick window to get the attention of the only nurse in there who was several feet away tending another baby. He remained with me after that. I had lost my almost full term…38 week, over 7 pounds 21”…baby girl the year before (negligent doctor) and almost lost my baby boy too because he became stuck in the birth canal. He was blue and had to be resuscitated. You don’t get as much rest…but peace of mind and go home with your own baby.
I was sharing a room with a mom whose baby got stuck in the birth canal. When trying to use oxygen in the birth canal they found that the oxygen tank was empty. She said that the doctor was furious. Needless to say someone lost their job that day. The babies Apgar test was very low.
Terrib - What an excellent mother!! So very sorry you had all of those terrible things happen, paramount the loss of your beautiful daughter. Your children are very fortunate to have a mother like yourself!! May God watch over your children and your family.
Hospitals here in Nigeria makes sure a family member is closely monitoring the nursing staff as they take care of the baby so there would be no mix ups.
I had my baby girl at Balboa Naval hospital in San Diego and they place electric alarm bands on mom baby and dad that identify that the family are all together and if any are tampered with or removed an alarm will sound and the nurses all come running which I found out by mistake lol but that gave me amazing peace of mind! I can’t imagine the emotional distress of loving on the wrong baby as those first few days are super crucial for bonding and cementing emotional ties to one another…poor mama!
💯 I'm Canadian and our hospitals do this too.We also don't have nurseries where healthy babies sit away from recovering mothers. Unless the baby requires NICU treatment, they will be in the room with the mother and father.
@@kp2223in not sure of the policy now here in the US but in the 90s when my daughter was born you had the option of having the baby room with you or in the nursery unless it had to be under lights or in the NICU

Known i was having a boy, in the delivery room there was 9 staff on stand by. I can't remember why. They took my baby did some quick work on a portable baby table. Eventually the nurse brought me my baby all wrapped up with a bow on his head. I freaked out internaly when the nurse said. "Here's your beautiful girl, congradulations." Brain goes to a screaching holt. "But, i had a boy, are you sure its a girl?!?" The nurse checked and sure enough i was holding a boy. As quick as it was over its one of the most panicked moments in my life.
I went through the same thing 46 years ago. The nurses aid brought in a baby. When I went to change the diaper the baby was a little girl. MY baby was a little boy. The woman then went and got my baby. Along with a case of water, diapers and formula. I guess she thought I was going to report her. I didn’t report her. I was just glad to have my son.
That's not practical for everyone. But what is practical for everyone is to forego the nursery. You don't have to send your baby to a nursery.I'm Canadian and most of our hospitals don't even have a nursery.They have a nicu, so if your baby is healthy you should be caring for it not the nurses.
Ah yes, because babies can safely go out of their mom's feet first, arm first. And midwives/parents have all the equipment to deal with a baby that has ingested poop, that came out limp and not breathing, a baby that's big for their gestational age and cannot fit through their mom's hoo-ha, they won't get any infection from the tools used. And there's no risk of the mother bleeding out or getting an infection
Yea my hospital had alarm tags for the parents and babes!! But my son’s dad was watching him like a hawk.. from the first little bath at the hospital to the diaper change to the meds they had to give him.. neither him or me left our sons side cause I was so scared of someone taking my baby!!
I still remember being an absolute panic. When my son had to say a whole month in Nikki because he was a month and a 1/2 early. My biggest fear was this happening just because I was out of it and honestly, I would not have been able to tell because just everything went wrong. I didn't get the hold of him. They just swept him off to Nick. You mind you? He was stable. He was not having breathing issues. He didn't need oxygen. He was just a little bit early. They wouldn't let me hold him when I went down to see him. And I had to actually walk myself down the nickel a day later because they refused to take me. Mind you ahead, lost 4 leaders of blood had to have an emergency section was weak everywhere and honestly am just starting the recovery from that 2 years later. I ended up getting lost and ended up in e. R. Which ended up being good thing? Because I pulled my stitches and I was bleeding. But when I was finally able to go see him. I made sure that I checked him for any. Kind of Birthmark that I could recognize as his which he seemed to have gotten mine thankfully, which is right above his ear. Though I didn't notice 1 day that it disappeared while we were in the queue and I called them out on it. I basically had good dna test to prove that the kid that was saying is, my kid was mine. And the one that they had handed me wasn't. This is what we are still in nicu during covid The kid I had turned out to be another ladies who was positive with COVID and my son ended up catching it. Yeah, I was convinced not to Sue but I still wished I had because what the f*** Like I could understand this happening like 2030 years ago, but not nowadays.
That infuriates me. This among other reasons is why, for my only hospital birth, my baby was not allowed to lane my room. Nope. All their equipment has wheels. Need to do a routine test? Not without my eyes.
💯 In my country it's not common for New babies to go to a nursery. Typically, unless it's medically required.The baby stays in the room with the mother from birth until they both leave the hospital together. Doctors nurses equipment, it all is wheeled into the room.They perform the tests,Give the inauculations et cetera , all in front of the mother.
My friend was swapped in the hospital and her mom found out because she had a distinctive bump behind her ear and it was not there. They did get reunited
That happened to the person whom was in the hospital room where I was .. she has just had her baby and was back in the room waiting for them being her daughter to her.. they brought the baby in and placed it in the mothers arms and the whole time she kept saying to me that just didn’t look like her baby.. she held it for a long while and then someone came in and told her that was the wrong baby! She lost her shit and said who’s been feeding my baby then? They told her her baby was in the nursery the whole time! Not sure if that is true but either way she did get her baby back .. can’t imagine!
Is it normal where you live for babies to be separated from mums at any stage? I live in NZ and never once, out of the 3 babies I had in hospital (one at home), did my babies ever leave my side unless their dad was taking them for a little walk down corridor or in lounge room, so i could rest. I just can't imagine trusting anyone even the lovely nurses, with my baby
@@ShonCon21 where I live in canada they took all 3 of mine for testing and they also asked me if I wanted them to take them at night to the nursery. With my first I said yes to the nursery because I was so afraid I wouldn't wake up to him crying to nurse, but with my second witch were twins I said yes for the first night because I had a horrible labour & delivery and needed the rest but after the first night I kept them with me the entire time! Idk how it is anywhere else though!
In the hospital they gave my grandma a different baby boy but she recognised it immediately because my uncle was born with 11 fingers. But tbh this switch would have been his chance to grow up without my toxic grandma, maybe he would've been a lot better this way. But then another boy would have been in his position and that's not fair either...
This happened to my grandma too. Only when she complained they insisted the baby was hers. Now I have an aunt who looks nothing like her family. Love my aunt anyway though. Also had toxic parents. My bio-aunt likely had a better life where ever she is.
So crazy anyone leaves their baby’s side at all: even NICU. My daughter was in the NICU and was never ever without one of us . I can’t imagine leaving a baby alone. I was legit the only mom in the NICU. The babies just screamed alone
I'd seen too many switched at birth movies throughout the 80's and 90's and I wasn't taking any chances with my baby. I gave birth to my only child 26 years ago and the hospital gave me the opportunity to have my daughter whenever I wanted. So I only allowed her to leave the room for baths and whatever else was absolutely necessary. As it turns out my daughter looked too much like me and my father to ever be confused with another child. Now I'm a grandma of 4 and my grandson looks a little like us but my granddaughters are like tiny clones lol.
If you have to be separated from your baby at any moment, make sure you have pre-planned for either your partner or a close family member/friend to go with the baby. Hospitals are hectic places and unfortunately even with the best of care things can go wrong.
This happened to me. If he had been a girl i would have went home with me. Funny storey we became really close with that family and grew up together!😂❤
This is terrible and I hope the hospital got her daughter back to her and returned the baby this poor lady had been with to his rightful parents. Wrist band on mom and matching ankle bracelet on baby I think could have prevented this from happening if such a system wasn’t in place. I’d be livid too.
The hospital I delivered at put a hospital bracelet on her wrist to match mine and an alarm on her ankle, it resembled a white version of an ankle monitor for probation. This was done right after they laid her on my chest, as in they were tagging her while she cried on my chest. In addition to that my boyfriend, her dad, stayed with her the entire time she wasn't right by me or in one of our arms. The only time she left our room was for her newborn hearing test and blood work (done in the same visit). When she came back they checked our bracelets, the hospital had a scanner and scanned our bracelets. My bf also took pictures of her while she was on my chest, specifically her face. We were not taking chances. We both have heard of hospital mixups and of women pretending to be nurses and snatching newborns from the maternity ward. To get in and out of the ward you had to be buzzed in, but you couldn't just press a button and be let in. They asked who you were & if you were visiting or in labor. They also were not messing around about safety. I'm grateful for that. ❤
They still do. Right at the bedside. I think this must have been a NICU mix up or office? She kept saying office. The “ nurses” might mean medical assistants. She said the baby had to stay for drug withdrawal. IDK if this was a foster/adoption or biological situation
Depends on where you're from. in my experience in Canada They put that ankle bracelet on the baby as soon as it's born and it matches the mother's hospital bracelet. They also put a security tag on the baby's ankle bracelet to ensure the baby can't leave the hospital without first having a nurse or Doctor match the hospital bracelet to the baby's ankle bracelet and removing the security tag. Also Most hospitals here don't just have a generic Nursery for healthy babies to be away from their recovering mothers. The babies are left in the room with the recovering mother during her recovery. The only time I've seen a baby leave A recovering mother is when they require NICU treatment. I'm not sure why so many hospitals still have nurseries where they just leave a bunch of babies without human contact in plastic bassinets for hours when they could be with their mothers.
In the US this is now illegal. They did studies in the 90’s about the effects of separating the baby and mother and they got such clear results that the separation was negatively affecting both that they made it illegal.
This happens all the time! Mother's be careful! I was also switched at birth. Thank goodness my father realized that I was not the baby they gave my parents. He told them that I was not the baby. Then they found me and brought me back to my parents.
The babies looks really change so much in just a few hours too. They take many many precautions in American hospitals now so that this doesnt happen. They put wrist bands on you and then the baby almost before anything else.
That's not entirely true. Currently, There are many legal cases of children being swapped at birth.And most of these children are 10 years old And younger.
Don't be quick to judge. I'm on a prescribed medication for opiate addiction called suboxone. I'm too old to get pregnant, but if I did, get pregnant and it was unplanned, the baby would be born with withdrawals. It's a totally legal prescribed medication like methadone. Sometimes pregnancies happen unintended. So don't judge, when you don't know.

A baby can have them from prescription meds taken. Some meds are dangerous to come off of while pregnant. It doesn't always mean that mom is on street drugs.

Some medications are dangerous to come off of during pregnancy and can increase the risk of miscarriage or still birth. Some of the medications could impact the mother's quality of life, like mental health medications, seizure medications or meds for chronic pain. You can't just assume they're "doing drugs".
This happened to my mom in the late 80's...she had a shared recovery room and the other lady had a boy with brown hair and brown eyes. My older sister was born with blonde hair and blue eyes...the nurses gaslit my mom when she told them that the baby next to her bed wasnt her baby...they pointed out the anklet on the baby's ankle (that was velcroed together meaning it could be easily removed and put back on) that had my mom's name. She went to change the baby's diaper and discovered she was changing a baby boy. Turns out the night nurses took both babies to the nursery the night before and for some reason their anklets were taken off during a changing and then put back on wrong. They apologized profusely but my mom was rightfully furious, as the other mom and baby got discharged a few hours after they made the discovery and the terror that her baby could have been discharged as the other woman's instead of hers and left to God knows where was insanely high. Even though the security measures are much higher nowadays here in the US, she still is weary when her kids have kids and the nurses offer to (ore require) take the baby to the nursery for a bit. The anxiety in her eyes is obvious.
@@margaritamontoya1385 They can go through withdrawal for prescription medications. It doesn't always mean they're on street drugs. If you're on a medication like an opioid, coming off them can cause you to miscarry. So often doctors will keep you on them, or switch mother's to a maintenance med like methadone or buprenorphine (subutex) Both of those can cause neonatal abstinence syndrome especially if they are not stable on the medication. Its truly a 50/50 chance. Theres no way to be certain a baby will or wont have NAS. Some do some dont and dose doesnt matter, stability does. Certain mental health medications, or medications that control seizures, etc can also cause withdrawal. A whole lot of meds can do it. They treat them with meds, ESC, and keep them monitored in the hospital. Always remember that babies aren't ever born addicted, they're born dependant. Babies cannot be addicts.
Given that it wasn't an addictive substance, the effects were probably mild and the hospital just needed to monitor as an extra precaution. Some people have to stay on their prescription meds through pregnancy, so inevitably the baby will need to be weaned from them and/or possibly experience withdrawal symptoms. It's not like the what opioid-exposed babies sometimes have to go through, which can be incredibly uncomfortable.
Oh my gosh, I would have ABSOLUTELY lost it on those people!!! I can't even imagine what you went through and thank goodness you got your daughter back!

YIKES! How HORRIBLE! An alarm tag was put on my baby soon after giving birth & there is no nursery at the hospital, (only NICU). Babies stay in the private hospital room with their Mommy. Whenever staff needed to take my daughter away they told me why & for how long. I'm very greatful for the way the hospital maternity ward operated. ❤
Hopefully the baby got the right treatment and did not have anything done to her that the boy was there for. I’d be getting records from that day to know what they did to her while in the wrong spot.
Even in the hospitals with the “security tags” on babies this happens. My first was a preemie the tag kept falling off his foot even at 8 wks old for repeat stay. Then my second baby after a trip to nursery the nurse brought me a bundled baby and asked ,” Is this your baby? Pretty sure it is,but she was so cozy I didn’t want to unwrap her to check the ID bracelet” 🤦🏼♀️
They're supposed to check your tag, and your baby's tag to ensure they match. Also, if there's any way possible, don't let them take your baby away. They took my oldest away for about five hours, and wheb I asked for him back they said he was having trouble regulating his temperature. I had had a rough night in labor, and for one of the few times in my life, I felt too weak to say no.
Same thing happened to me with baby next room over ( who coincidentally was my hair dresser babies born same day ) swapped with mine . Mine was girl and this was boy they brought for me to nurse .. though they looked the same I knew it was not my baby based only on the weight as I held in my arms I knew my baby felt heavier .. I said something immediately and the nurse argued with me saying was impossible to happen their system blah blah blah . She looked at the bracelet then immediately apologized. I figure only bc I knew and bcz boy vs girl … but really you can’t trust the “ system.” I wish I never had her vaccinated.. as a baby .. I’m positive it cause Asperger’s in her later in life became apparent..
Vaccination do not cause Asperges. The Doctor that wrote that article was charged with fraud. Asperges is a genetic disorder inherited from his ancestors.
I was always afraid of my baby being swapped, which is why I only okayed her leaving for a bath and nothing else. Was still nervous, but she was born with a distinct birthmark on her back that is similar to the one I have on my thigh. So the nurses felt very confident that they couldn’t swap my baby with another.
I’ve heard of women using non-toxic skin marker to mark their baby’s foot, or even nail polish on one toe nail after delivery so that their baby can’t be swapped
So when I was born the hospital put my mom in a room in the basement, and proceeded to neglect her for the rest of her stay. My sister was then born in a different hospital and my mom told them no drugs, they gave her drugs anyway and after she had her they switched the baby on her as well. It wasn't until the nurse saw my mom going to breast feed that they realized it was the wrong baby. After that my dad delivered all of my other 3 sisters at home.
I don't understand how women don't recognize their own babies. I've had two and their faces were both etched into my mind from the minute I saw them. They're adults now and I can still recall what they looked like on day 1.

Yes. It was Dr. Prescribed for Mom and necessary. But it meant baby got the narcotics as well and would need to stay to be slowly weaned off of the drugs. Not a bad Mom. Just a situation where it was needed.
Nope baby needs to be in mom’s room the entire time for all testing and immunizations, unless there is an emergency and the baby is transferred to a different location for care.
My mom had me and my sister stay with her in the room when she had us. She did NOT want us in the nursery for this exact reason. Mix ups or getting stolen. I’m very glad she did because I wouldn’t want any other mom in the world, especially if it wasn’t my real mom. This case also reminds me of the movie “Run.” pretty sure its on Hulu and its a greaf movie and I totally recommend it for anyone who likes thrillers!

My hospital puts an alarm tag on all the babies immediately after birth. The tag has an ID number and the parents are given bracelets with the same number. If someone removes the tag from the baby without it being deactivated, the system alarms and all the doors on the ward lock. Maybe it's overkill, but it definitely gives me some peace as a hormonal, new mother. Having your baby switched or stolen would be devastating.

Mine too. We saw it working too. It was late at night/early morning. My husband was helping me to try to get some rest in the hospital & took the baby for a walk in the bassinet there. He accidentally crossed the line in the hospital without knowing it. The elevators were suddenly locked, the security guard came & about 7 nurses or so were at the hospital door. He was escorted back by another nurse who saw what happened so that as she said they didntackle him. On top of that because of hospital signal, I couldn't get ahold of my husband by calling him. It was quite a story that we talk about, but at least we know they work 😄

Thankfully. Some women take them home and get called a cheater later on. That one woman I heard of nearly got divorced and got a maternity test to prove her innocence.
In a UK hospital, they brought me the wrong baby and then asked me if I was sure! When I replied, ‘Yes I am sure, my baby was born with a cleft lip and palate and this baby has no cleft lip and palate and has a Jewish surname’, they quickly wheeled the baby away and I heard them laughing at the nurse’s station. At this point in time, I had been separated from her for five hours (she was in NICU and I was unable to walk) and it tipped me over the edge. I burst into tears and, finally, at midnight a new doctor came and asked me why I was crying and I told her ‘I just want to see my baby!’ After explaining what happened and what I had been through, the doctor stormed down to the nurse’s station and demanded that someone get me in a wheelchair and wheel me straight in to see the baby! Awful awful behaviour from these professionals. 😢

I don't know, seems like a mom could idenify their child as long as they actually had the chance to visit, hold and cuddle before baby was taken to nursery. Woman are amazing when we give birth we bond with our babies we know their smell, I could see my husbands features in our boy. All I could think about 70p was my husband after a few short minutes of holdinghhhhhbv my child I would know him for life ❤❤
That happened to my grandmother, my uncle got swapped at the hospital, a nurse gave the wrong baby to my grandmother, thankfully she knew right away it was not her son. She noticed the baby didn’t have the birthmark on his leg like my uncle, nobody believed her, saying it’s her baby. So my grandmother screamed at the nurse, nearly beating her up, demanding where her baby was, they finally realized their mistake & give my uncle back, who was about to be discharged with another family.
That story traumatized my mom, that’s why at my birth, she screamed at my dad to follow me everywhere & not leaving me alone with the nurses. 😅 same with my little brothers, it became a usual thing to never leave the baby alone at the hospital.

My grandmother had my father at home (second birth for her) after reading in the paper how several babies had been mixed up at the hospital.
My mom said the best thing to do after having a baby is to examine them all over, not just health reasons but to note any birthmarks etc. It's scary to think of how many times babies were switched before safety /ID measures became routine

All my babies, 1st in 87, had tight bracelets on their wrist and ankle. I had to call off my id number before they would leave the baby with me.
That means isabella wasn't getting the medicine she needed for the whole day and that could have been dangerous as well! Not ok! What a nightmare 😡

If the mother was using drugs, or even had to be prescribed certain drugs, during pregnancy, then after birth the baby would spend a few days withdrawing from whatever it was. Not really a big mystery lol.
This! I was 17 with a fever immediately after delivery! Buy everytime they put my baby in the nursery, I went in & took him back! My Doctor finally came in an advocated for me! The nurses had been treating me like I couldn't possibly care for my son being the age I was! I saved my 1st babies life at age 9, so I beg to differ! Regardless I had serious reservations about their care! It was a large full nursery, but everytime I saw it it was full with no one in attendance! Newborns were all on their backs, crying & numerous choking! I went rolling babies to their sides, made sure they were OK now & went & raised the house! Everytime the excuse was they were on a shift change! I wondered when they actually worked! Anyhoo, they didn't touch my son after my Dr gave them a stern talking to! He actually raised the roof because they refused to call him when I came into deliver the day before! 4th of July holiday & he was home having a BBQ! We joked the whole pregnancy because I kept saying it was going to be a boy born on the 4th of July. Can't say why, I just knew it to my core! 4th of July however put me 2 weeks over my due date, yee ha! And it was exceptional hot that summer!😂😂 Anyway, he had finally agreed the week prior I could be right & told me to have then call him! They refused, the Dr on call was brutal, and cut me bad, causing a severe infection! Then they kept taking my baby, so this 106° fever ravaged angry bear Momma would go hunting for him! He is now in his 40s & blessed me with 3 amazing grandchildren! ❤

See all these stories shock me because I've given birth 4 times -- 3 in canada and 1 in poland -- and I have NEVER been separated from my child. If ever there was a problem and they needed to go to a different room, I or my husband would accompany the baby. Why do mothers and babies get separated after birth in some countries?
Because I had to have surgery under anesthesia right after delivery. Her dad, who was abroad for work, wasn't at the hospital, so yeah, of course parents get separated from their newborn occasionally at the hospital.
There are many reasons why they would be separated - if the baby or mother is in surgery, if the baby requires an incubator or baby/mother needs intensive treatment or monitoring and is in the NICU or ICU respectively. (In this case the v/o says the baby was in withdrawal) Many new moms, especially if they have had a difficult delivery may also not want to go immediately into 24 hour parenting, so the nurses can take the baby to the nursery for a few hours so mom can have breaks or rest/recover.
Exactly why my daughter had me there with them for the 24 hours post delivery in the hospital. She had to be medicated due to a high blood pressure problem - they wanted to take my G’daughter to the nursery. Nope. That’s not happening. I held that baby in my arms for 8 hours. They wanted to take her to another room to bathe her. OK - I’ll go with her. There was zero possibility we were letting her out of our sight.
😂 my mother in law followed the nurse when she said that she was going to bathe the baby and she was right next to her with every move. Later on the nurse said to me " your mother in law doesn't trust me" I said " she doesn't trust ANYONE with her grandson except my husband I and my father in law 😂. I felt terribly for the nurse 🤦🏿♀️

I actually did! Brought a sharpie into the delivery room when I had my daughter in 2022 and drew a mark on her foot when she was born. I also noticed a birthmark on her ear, so I was glad I had another identifying mark. Good thing she had that birthmark, too, because I had to go into surgery right after delivery and only got her back a few hours later. I was so shocked when the sharpie mark wasn't anywhere! But the birthmark on her ear was. Turns out, they had cleaned her up nicely and taken footprints, so my sharpie mark had inadvertantly been cleaned off. 😊

Make sure its a permanent marker on sole of foot, but maybe they'd even scrub it off? or try to find any birthmark, or something about the pattern of hair, iris, ear, if toes curl or any 2 have a longer connected at bottom, basically as many of those little common idiosyncratic characteristics that everyone has but we don't all have the same ones together...at least 1 or 2 you can easily verbalize. So its not just like "her profile looks different" because that's hard to describe, and their faces can change a little bit if first seen just after a natural delivery . I guess you could demand a blood test if they don't believe you?

There was a nursery her baby stayed at under a special lamp where nurses checked on her baby every 2 hours she was called into this office and apparently the baby was fine and said the baby kept on crying that's why they had the baby even though she was a bit suspicious because her baby girl never cried since she was so unwell at the time, she found out the baby was a boy so she went down an said to the nurses/widwifes and asked them where the baby there face went pale and told her they assumed that baby boy was hers since they looked so similar. She got he baby back an was in shock. The staff never mentioned it for the rest of the time period they stayed there but she said she didn't know who the boys mother was an it remained a mystery.

Same happened to me. About to see my son for the first time since surgery & the moment they brought him to me, I knew it wasn't my baby. They thought I was crazy & wouldn't listen to me. I took the baby & went room to room looking for mine. Found him 5 rooms down with a lady who was trying to force him to take her milk. She called nurses who called security and eventually police because I refused to give back my son to the other lady who was refusing to take her own. After 3 more hours they figured out the mistake & admitted I was right. They couldn't figure out how I knew when I only saw my son for 2 seconds before they took him away to finish my surgery. Besides just remembering his beautiful face, my baby was 10lbs 11ozs at birth & the baby they brought me was a little bitty baby, lol. RIP my sweet Michael. 6-11-91 to 5-02-14 ❣️💔❣️

I understand this isn't practical for everyone, but I refuse to let any hospital take my child to the nursery. I don't understand why more parents don't insist on baby in the room with them.
I'm in canada and most hospitals do not have nurseries at all. Unless your child needs to be in the NICU, That baby is in the room with the recovering mother
I never let them out of my sight at hospital. When it came time for the pku? test I made my husband stay with baby and bring him right back when done. Whenever my babies had to leave my hospital room, I would make my husband watch like a hawk. It was 1993 when all those crazy talk shows ( sally jessy, Phil, Geraldo etc) were on and they had me paranoid.
Nurseries are no longer the standard as close contact with mothers has been proven to be more beneficial to baby's. They are taken for a brief moment to be assessed about their health and while the mom gets stitched or recovering from the anaesthesia. Only if they have a serious condition (ex. pre-mature, baby came out limp and not breathing) will they be separated from the mother. And no, family members are not allowed in the ICU unless they are wearing sterile clothes or wearing sterile gowns. Maybe because I'm from a developing nation, but healthy babies are cared for by both parents in the ward and private rooms. Since we are usually understaffed, nurses don't get the babies from the ward to do any post natal care, parents are told what to do and where to go

I live in the Netherlands. Here after birth baby gets wiped off a bit, hat put on and than a name tag with the mother's name. Reading ain't rocket science.
36 years ago I had a C-section with my first. I did not get to see her as I passed out right afterwards. I woke up early early and they allowed me to see her real quick as they were running test. The next morning the nurse came in looked at my band and babys band and handed her to me. I said this is not my baby... She said what??? I said my baby is bald .. that baby had a head full of black hair. She looked at our bands again.. mine was Hurt the babys was Hunt... 🤦🏼♀️ Luckily I had seen her already or I would have thought she was mine.
How many times had this happened...During depression time my grandmother took ill and the children had stayed at an orphanage for a time
When time to pick up the children, the young baby given Grandma was not hers, which she said til the day she died. Baby Anna did not look like any of siblings in later years. 🌹🇺🇸

My first baby was born in hospital and I was told I needed an epidural. That night after birth, the nurses left me alone with my baby 10 feet from me. When she kept crying the nurse came in asked annoyed why I wasn’t feeding her as instructed. I told them I was paralyzed waist down and I couldn’t reach her. My next 2 we’re home births as I refused to go back to the hospital. Unfortunately my 4th was premature and the midwife had to yell at all the nurses and doctors to let us be coz there almost twenty nurses and doctors going in and out of the birthing room and the baby and I were in distress by this point. As soon as he came out, I made sure to lock eyes with him in case they end up giving me the wrong baby. Good thing I did. They took him to NICU without even letting me hold him first. Do not like hospitals at all.
Sorry if they didn't even let you hold him before bringing him to the NICU but every second counts. The only time I've witnessed of a baby coming out of the mom and immediately rushed to the NICU was because everyone already expected the baby's condition was bad and true enough, the baby was limp and not breathing at all and they had to immediately resuscitate the baby. The baby's life comes first before the mother's feelings in emergency cases
@@hinatamercury thank you. He was weak but okay. I, was very weak at the time too. What I meant was it’s crazy chaotic when it didn’t have to be. The traffic in the room as I was pushing a baby out was very stressful for myself and my midwife. It could have been handled better. There were staff walking in and out just to get a peek. Weird.
Fortunately, Mt pregnancies were healthy enough that I had home births.

I kept my baby with me almost the entire time. He had to go to the nursery because of a bilirubin treatment and I followed as far as I could, but could only see through the window. I saw him through the glass kicking and flailing when the little glasses they wear during treatment had slipped over his nose and mouth! I began beating on the thick window to get the attention of the only nurse in there who was several feet away tending another baby. He remained with me after that. I had lost my almost full term…38 week, over 7 pounds 21”…baby girl the year before (negligent doctor) and almost lost my baby boy too because he became stuck in the birth canal. He was blue and had to be resuscitated. You don’t get as much rest…but peace of mind and go home with your own baby.
Never let anyone leave the room with your baby at any time without you or a trusted companion to accompany them. Never.

I was sharing a room with a mom whose baby got stuck in the birth canal. When trying to use oxygen in the birth canal they found that the oxygen tank was empty. She said that the doctor was furious. Needless to say someone lost their job that day. The babies Apgar test was very low.

Hospitals here in Nigeria makes sure a family member is closely monitoring the nursing staff as they take care of the baby so there would be no mix ups.
I had my baby girl at Balboa Naval hospital in San Diego and they place electric alarm bands on mom baby and dad that identify that the family are all together and if any are tampered with or removed an alarm will sound and the nurses all come running which I found out by mistake lol but that gave me amazing peace of mind! I can’t imagine the emotional distress of loving on the wrong baby as those first few days are super crucial for bonding and cementing emotional ties to one another…poor mama!
💯 I'm Canadian and our hospitals do this too.We also don't have nurseries where healthy babies sit away from recovering mothers. Unless the baby requires NICU treatment, they will be in the room with the mother and father.

Known i was having a boy, in the delivery room there was 9 staff on stand by. I can't remember why. They took my baby did some quick work on a portable baby table. Eventually the nurse brought me my baby all wrapped up with a bow on his head. I freaked out internaly when the nurse said. "Here's your beautiful girl, congradulations." Brain goes to a screaching holt. "But, i had a boy, are you sure its a girl?!?" The nurse checked and sure enough i was holding a boy. As quick as it was over its one of the most panicked moments in my life.
It took an entire day to change that babies nappy?? Poor child, wet and soggy all day.

I went through the same thing 46 years ago.
The nurses aid brought in a baby. When I went to change the diaper the baby was a little girl. MY baby was a little boy.
The woman then went and got my baby. Along with a case of water, diapers and formula. I guess she thought I was going to report her.

That's not practical for everyone. But what is practical for everyone is to forego the nursery. You don't have to send your baby to a nursery.I'm Canadian and most of our hospitals don't even have a nursery.They have a nicu, so if your baby is healthy you should be caring for it not the nurses.
Ah yes, because babies can safely go out of their mom's feet first, arm first. And midwives/parents have all the equipment to deal with a baby that has ingested poop, that came out limp and not breathing, a baby that's big for their gestational age and cannot fit through their mom's hoo-ha, they won't get any infection from the tools used. And there's no risk of the mother bleeding out or getting an infection

Yea my hospital had alarm tags for the parents and babes!! But my son’s dad was watching him like a hawk.. from the first little bath at the hospital to the diaper change to the meds they had to give him.. neither him or me left our sons side cause I was so scared of someone taking my baby!!
I still remember being an absolute panic. When my son had to say a whole month in Nikki because he was a month and a 1/2 early.
My biggest fear was this happening just because I was out of it and honestly, I would not have been able to tell because just everything went wrong.
I didn't get the hold of him. They just swept him off to Nick. You mind you? He was stable. He was not having breathing issues. He didn't need oxygen. He was just a little bit early.
They wouldn't let me hold him when I went down to see him. And I had to actually walk myself down the nickel a day later because they refused to take me.
Mind you ahead, lost 4 leaders of blood had to have an emergency section was weak everywhere and honestly am just starting the recovery from that 2 years later.
I ended up getting lost and ended up in e. R. Which ended up being good thing? Because I pulled my stitches and I was bleeding.
But when I was finally able to go see him. I made sure that I checked him for any. Kind of Birthmark that I could recognize as his which he seemed to have gotten mine thankfully, which is right above his ear.
Though I didn't notice 1 day that it disappeared while we were in the queue and I called them out on it.
I basically had good dna test to prove that the kid that was saying is, my kid was mine. And the one that they had handed me wasn't.

💯 In my country it's not common for New babies to go to a nursery. Typically, unless it's medically required.The baby stays in the room with the mother from birth until they both leave the hospital together. Doctors nurses equipment, it all is wheeled into the room.They perform the tests,Give the inauculations et cetera , all in front of the mother.
My friend was swapped in the hospital and her mom found out because she had a distinctive bump behind her ear and it was not there. They did get reunited

My mom made my dad watch me at all times when I was born. She was so worried I could be switched with another baby.
That happened to the person whom was in the hospital room where I was .. she has just had her baby and was back in the room waiting for them being her daughter to her.. they brought the baby in and placed it in the mothers arms and the whole time she kept saying to me that just didn’t look like her baby.. she held it for a long while and then someone came in and told her that was the wrong baby! She lost her shit and said who’s been feeding my baby then? They told her her baby was in the nursery the whole time! Not sure if that is true but either way she did get her baby back .. can’t imagine!

Is it normal where you live for babies to be separated from mums at any stage? I live in NZ and never once, out of the 3 babies I had in hospital (one at home), did my babies ever leave my side unless their dad was taking them for a little walk down corridor or in lounge room, so i could rest. I just can't imagine trusting anyone even the lovely nurses, with my baby
@@ShonCon21 where I live in canada they took all 3 of mine for testing and they also asked me if I wanted them to take them at night to the nursery. With my first I said yes to the nursery because I was so afraid I wouldn't wake up to him crying to nurse, but with my second witch were twins I said yes for the first night because I had a horrible labour & delivery and needed the rest but after the first night I kept them with me the entire time! Idk how it is anywhere else though!
In the hospital they gave my grandma a different baby boy but she recognised it immediately because my uncle was born with 11 fingers.
But tbh this switch would have been his chance to grow up without my toxic grandma, maybe he would've been a lot better this way. But then another boy would have been in his position and that's not fair either...

This happened to my grandma too. Only when she complained they insisted the baby was hers. Now I have an aunt who looks nothing like her family. Love my aunt anyway though. Also had toxic parents. My bio-aunt likely had a better life where ever she is.

So crazy anyone leaves their baby’s side at all: even NICU. My daughter was in the NICU and was never ever without one of us . I can’t imagine leaving a baby alone. I was legit the only mom in the NICU. The babies just screamed alone

I'd seen too many switched at birth movies throughout the 80's and 90's and I wasn't taking any chances with my baby. I gave birth to my only child 26 years ago and the hospital gave me the opportunity to have my daughter whenever I wanted. So I only allowed her to leave the room for baths and whatever else was absolutely necessary. As it turns out my daughter looked too much like me and my father to ever be confused with another child. Now I'm a grandma of 4 and my grandson looks a little like us but my granddaughters are like tiny clones lol.
If you have to be separated from your baby at any moment, make sure you have pre-planned for either your partner or a close family member/friend to go with the baby. Hospitals are hectic places and unfortunately even with the best of care things can go wrong.
That's why I was with my children at ALL times. I stayed in the hospital for 4 days

This is terrible and I hope the hospital got her daughter back to her and returned the baby this poor lady had been with to his rightful parents. Wrist band on mom and matching ankle bracelet on baby I think could have prevented this from happening if such a system wasn’t in place. I’d be livid too.
The hospital I delivered at put a hospital bracelet on her wrist to match mine and an alarm on her ankle, it resembled a white version of an ankle monitor for probation. This was done right after they laid her on my chest, as in they were tagging her while she cried on my chest. In addition to that my boyfriend, her dad, stayed with her the entire time she wasn't right by me or in one of our arms. The only time she left our room was for her newborn hearing test and blood work (done in the same visit). When she came back they checked our bracelets, the hospital had a scanner and scanned our bracelets. My bf also took pictures of her while she was on my chest, specifically her face. We were not taking chances. We both have heard of hospital mixups and of women pretending to be nurses and snatching newborns from the maternity ward. To get in and out of the ward you had to be buzzed in, but you couldn't just press a button and be let in. They asked who you were & if you were visiting or in labor. They also were not messing around about safety. I'm grateful for that. ❤

Depends on where you're from. in my experience in Canada They put that ankle bracelet on the baby as soon as it's born and it matches the mother's hospital bracelet. They also put a security tag on the baby's ankle bracelet to ensure the baby can't leave the hospital without first having a nurse or Doctor match the hospital bracelet to the baby's ankle bracelet and removing the security tag.
Also Most hospitals here don't just have a generic Nursery for healthy babies to be away from their recovering mothers. The babies are left in the room with the recovering mother during her recovery. The only time I've seen a baby leave A recovering mother is when they require NICU treatment. I'm not sure why so many hospitals still have nurseries where they just leave a bunch of babies without human contact in plastic bassinets for hours when they could be with their mothers.
In the US this is now illegal. They did studies in the 90’s about the effects of separating the baby and mother and they got such clear results that the separation was negatively affecting both that they made it illegal.

This happens all the time! Mother's be careful! I was also switched at birth. Thank goodness my father realized that I was not the baby they gave my parents. He told them that I was not the baby. Then they found me and brought me back to my parents.

The babies looks really change so much in just a few hours too. They take many many precautions in American hospitals now so that this doesnt happen. They put wrist bands on you and then the baby almost before anything else.

I'm on a prescribed medication for opiate addiction called suboxone.
I'm too old to get pregnant, but if I did, get pregnant and it was unplanned, the baby would be born with withdrawals. It's a totally legal prescribed medication like methadone.
Sometimes pregnancies happen unintended. So don't judge, when you don't know.

A baby can have them from prescription meds taken. Some meds are dangerous to come off of while pregnant. It doesn't always mean that mom is on street drugs.

This happened to my mom in the late 80's...she had a shared recovery room and the other lady had a boy with brown hair and brown eyes. My older sister was born with blonde hair and blue eyes...the nurses gaslit my mom when she told them that the baby next to her bed wasnt her baby...they pointed out the anklet on the baby's ankle (that was velcroed together meaning it could be easily removed and put back on) that had my mom's name. She went to change the baby's diaper and discovered she was changing a baby boy. Turns out the night nurses took both babies to the nursery the night before and for some reason their anklets were taken off during a changing and then put back on wrong. They apologized profusely but my mom was rightfully furious, as the other mom and baby got discharged a few hours after they made the discovery and the terror that her baby could have been discharged as the other woman's instead of hers and left to God knows where was insanely high. Even though the security measures are much higher nowadays here in the US, she still is weary when her kids have kids and the nurses offer to (ore require) take the baby to the nursery for a bit. The anxiety in her eyes is obvious.

@@margaritamontoya1385 They can go through withdrawal for prescription medications. It doesn't always mean they're on street drugs. If you're on a medication like an opioid, coming off them can cause you to miscarry. So often doctors will keep you on them, or switch mother's to a maintenance med like methadone or buprenorphine (subutex) Both of those can cause neonatal abstinence syndrome especially if they are not stable on the medication. Its truly a 50/50 chance. Theres no way to be certain a baby will or wont have NAS. Some do some dont and dose doesnt matter, stability does. Certain mental health medications, or medications that control seizures, etc can also cause withdrawal. A whole lot of meds can do it.
They treat them with meds, ESC, and keep them monitored in the hospital. Always remember that babies aren't ever born addicted, they're born dependant. Babies cannot be addicts.

Given that it wasn't an addictive substance, the effects were probably mild and the hospital just needed to monitor as an extra precaution. Some people have to stay on their prescription meds through pregnancy, so inevitably the baby will need to be weaned from them and/or possibly experience withdrawal symptoms. It's not like the what opioid-exposed babies sometimes have to go through, which can be incredibly uncomfortable.

YIKES! How HORRIBLE! An alarm tag was put on my baby soon after giving birth & there is no nursery at the hospital, (only NICU). Babies stay in the private hospital room with their Mommy. Whenever staff needed to take my daughter away they told me why & for how long. I'm very greatful for the way the hospital maternity ward operated. ❤

Even in the hospitals with the “security tags” on babies this happens. My first was a preemie the tag kept falling off his foot even at 8 wks old for repeat stay. Then my second baby after a trip to nursery the nurse brought me a bundled baby and asked ,” Is this your baby? Pretty sure it is,but she was so cozy I didn’t want to unwrap her to check the ID bracelet” 🤦🏼♀️

Also, if there's any way possible, don't let them take your baby away. They took my oldest away for about five hours, and wheb I asked for him back they said he was having trouble regulating his temperature. I had had a rough night in labor, and for one of the few times in my life, I felt too weak to say no.

Same thing happened to me with baby next room over ( who coincidentally was my hair dresser babies born same day ) swapped with mine . Mine was girl and this was boy they brought for me to nurse .. though they looked the same I knew it was not my baby based only on the weight as I held in my arms I knew my baby felt heavier .. I said something immediately and the nurse argued with me saying was impossible to happen their system blah blah blah . She looked at the bracelet then immediately apologized. I figure only bc I knew and bcz boy vs girl … but really you can’t trust the “ system.” I wish I never had her vaccinated.. as a baby .. I’m positive it cause Asperger’s in her later in life became apparent..

I was always afraid of my baby being swapped, which is why I only okayed her leaving for a bath and nothing else.
Was still nervous, but she was born with a distinct birthmark on her back that is similar to the one I have on my thigh. So the nurses felt very confident that they couldn’t swap my baby with another.
I was nervous about this too. But luckily my baby boy has a heart-shaped birthmark on his leg, so it was always easy to make sure he was mine.
I’ve heard of women using non-toxic skin marker to mark their baby’s foot, or even nail polish on one toe nail after delivery so that their baby can’t be swapped
So when I was born the hospital put my mom in a room in the basement, and proceeded to neglect her for the rest of her stay. My sister was then born in a different hospital and my mom told them no drugs, they gave her drugs anyway and after she had her they switched the baby on her as well. It wasn't until the nurse saw my mom going to breast feed that they realized it was the wrong baby. After that my dad delivered all of my other 3 sisters at home.
My kids are so different from each other but one thing for sure they were not mixed up in a hospital #homebirth

Yes. It was Dr. Prescribed for Mom and necessary. But it meant baby got the narcotics as well and would need to stay to be slowly weaned off of the drugs. Not a bad Mom. Just a situation where it was needed.
Nope baby needs to be in mom’s room the entire time for all testing and immunizations, unless there is an emergency and the baby is transferred to a different location for care.
My mom had me and my sister stay with her in the room when she had us. She did NOT want us in the nursery for this exact reason. Mix ups or getting stolen. I’m very glad she did because I wouldn’t want any other mom in the world, especially if it wasn’t my real mom.
This case also reminds me of the movie “Run.” pretty sure its on Hulu and its a greaf movie and I totally recommend it for anyone who likes thrillers!
