On the other side you have an old man who likely has health issues (do you believe the reports the disgraced WH doc wrote about him?), who has never demonstrated any degree of culture or intelligence (unless you think his stories of sharks vs. batteries, his "acing" a dementia test and him having had an uncle teaching at MIT are signs of those qualities), but most importantly, has zero qualms to say and do whatever he wants, tried to stay in power by ruse and by force, believes the Constitution gives him the right to do whatever he wants, the SCOTUS he populated with his minions just told him he can do whatever he wants as long as he makes it ""official,"" and has so many legal issues and has told so many lies that Wikipedia has long articles dedicated only to those subjects.

No, and he never could - despite what Fox, OAN, and all the other Right Wingnut channels would have you believe: this matter is in the COURT SYSTEM - the Judiciary now, NOT the police, or the F.B.I., or anyone but judges, Juries, and attorneys.
The thing you apparently don't know (which is sad, no matter which "side" you're on), is that our government is made up of three distinctly separate branches:
1.) The Judiciary (the entire court system), which is the ONLY part of our government that can try and sentence criminals,
2.) the Administrative (the President, the IRS. Federal police, and our armed forces), and
3.) Congress (the Senate, and the House of Representatives - Upper and Lower houses), which MAKES and PASSES laws, and is the only part of our government authorized to spend our tax money - for anything.
- All of that comes straight from our Constitution, and not until TRUMP corrupted the Judiciary by appointing judges (including Supreme Court judges) that would help him delay punishment for any crime he commits, has any one branch of government been able to influence another - it was designed this way, to keep us safe from Fascism, or a Monarchy.
Trump corrupts everything he touches - and he is now utterly corrupting our government itself - for his own benefit.

Isn't the thing limiting actions against a sitting president a "policy" rather than a "law"? That is, is it not what the DOJ chose to follow rather than a limit set by law and therefore the DOJ can simply do as they choose without any legal appeal of it? I admit I don't know for sure, but from the various talks on the news about it, that seems to be what lawyers have presented it as.

a perfect example is the 2005 stolen valor act that was passed in congress with broad bipartisan support but then tossed out in Alvarez v. U.S. 2012 on 1st amendment grounds

Hillary was not president and she deleted evidence after a court told her not to.
Trump was president and he took copies - like every president did. Including Joe despite only being VP. He had a security clearance and was legally allowed access to those documents created while he served.
