A financial literacy course is required to graduate from the high school where I teach in Connecticut.
When discussing multi trillion-dollar government deficits, I often use a relatable analogy with houses. This is especially effective with zoomers who have alot of anxiety around housing. I tell them picture your average $400k-$500k home, then imagine a neighborhood with 2,000 of homes. Now, envision 1,000 such neighborhoods. That's a trillion dollars. The government's deficit spending alone is TWICE that....ergo equal to the cost of 2,000 neighborhoods with 2,000 homes each, annually. Emphasize that is only DEFICIT spending THIS YEAR ALONE. They usally agree "that is ridiculous!" while shaking thier heads.
Can we stop with the "I'm worried about my kids over the national debt" speech. I have heard that BS for 50 of my 57 years on earth. No one does anything about it.....it's ridiculous
We can be worried... there is nothing to be done but prepare for them.
