I know he’s not on the show anymore but that’s very brave for a new cast member to start a sketch like that with so much dialogue and have to wait so long for the joke payoff. Id have so much anxiety as the crowd is nearly silent for like the first two minutes.
Joe Mama I think he just didn’t get the chance to distinguish himself early on and break out. Tricky to do so among pros and a bunch of other new cast trying to do the same.

Yeah I feel absolutely terrible. This is one of my favorite sketches, but I can't imagine how much people just thought he was terribly unfunny. What a terrible first impression to have to make.

Kudos to the writers for allowing a secondary cast member to walk the tightrope for so long -- solely for the veterans to cash in on the punchline multiple times. Tight, risky sketch.
You know, it's moments like this that make me thankful that SNL goes out of its way in the search of new horizons in comedy and the sketch.
Gazu oke, so obviously im to stupid, but are you guys being serious or sarcastic? I think they did a great job. He is not a main cast member, yet he got the biggest role in the sketch. I think they all did great. He must have been over the moon. Opportunities like this get you further in life. Plus he is still very funny.

I mean a real grade-A turd, who used to bully, hit other kids, name call, and tell some of the most heinous jokes. I hadn't been home in 13 years (school and military). I spoke to the DJ at my sister's wedding and he just so happen to mention this guy. Come to find out, this guy was shot and killed. Wow! But loved the skit.

@@andrewharvey3282 I believe it’s the chemicals used in smoke (cigarettes and matches use very similar chemicals) and I know this due to my friend being allergic to the common equipment we use to this day like to smoke and to cook food which my friend is unavailable to do
@@andrewharvey3282 Cigarettes are made up of a lot of different ingredients. It’s totally plausible that a person can be allergic to at least one of the ingredients, which means every time someone smokes it and the smoke disperses into the air, the person could breathe it in and get an allergic reaction. While there are more common allergies out there, people can have an allergic reaction to almost anything.
It’s always risky to have that much buildup for one joke but I think it paid off. I busted a gut when it landed😂

Everyone saying the beginning isn’t funny... it’s not supposed to be. The joke is the second half of the skit
The second half was slightly more "funny" then the first half. And the first half was as funny as a funeral. Stop accepting terrible writing so they know that they need to try harder. There could be a sketch of them just standing there staring at the audience for a minute and people would think it changed the genre of comedy.

How is NOBODY getting the joke of this sketch? The cringe is intentional.
This whole sketch reads as a satire of the pressures put on new SNL cast members, to bring something new to the table.
Watch it again.
In the entire first three minutes, Luke basically runs through every hack joke you've heard from dudes on SNL - from the 70's to the late 90's. ANY of those jokes would feel at home, coming from a young Adam Sandler or David Spade.
That first three minutes of silence proves how much SNL has grown over the past few decades, and how those types of jokes are dated and irrelevant.
And in Luke's FIRST sketch, with an original character, it's THE worst most hack jokes that dudes have overplayed for years.
It's a mirror to the overuse of "white dude jokes" in sketch comedy.
It's also a mirror to the internet reaction to Luke, and people's expectations.
Just look at what Luke keeps repeating:
"I just wanted to make a splash."
Everyone in the comments is acting like the back half of the sketch wasn't written before they started the sketch.
The entire back half of the sketch is the cast explaining how those earlier jokes are outdated, and why they aren't funny.
This sketch is also SNL admitting it's own past mistakes, and how it caused these played out jokes.
It's also demonstrating how adding Luke doesn't symbolize a return to those style of jokes - they're still irrelevant.
I mean, if you're not convinced, look at the set!
They're using the classroom set from their Gilly sketches! They haven't used this set in ages -- but there was a solid 3-5 period of SNL, where it felt like I saw this set every week.
In a sketch where they're calling out their own played out jokes from the past, they're using a played out setting.
This is brilliant satire. That's why it got past rehearsal. You're all nuts.
If this was Tim Heidecker pulling this level of cringe on SNL, you'd all be losing your shit.

Payton Woolsey those horrible jokes were mixed with politically incorrect jokes said to make the audience feel awkward because he was playing somebody who’s an unfunny asshole trying too hard to be cool. That’s why when the cooler funnier class clown comes at the end Keenan says “now that’s how it’s done!”

So I initially assumed this was going to be one of those bad sketches, but was pleasantly surprised to see the second half pull off the joke.
We understood it... it’s just the fact that it wasn’t funny, but to be honest, I don’t blame him. I think the writing was kinda trash for this skit. At least in my opinion
The first couple minutes I was thinking "wow this is bad and uncomfortable", but by the end I saw that it was intentional and 4th-wall breaking, sort of. The point of the sketch was to show that a new cast member (student) wanted to make a big impression on the class (audience) and failed miserably.

America is about 20 or 30 years behind most of the world on sex stuff so yeah, the American Propaganda machine keeps shoving same sex issues down everyone's throats until the older people die out and it isn't a thing anymore and everyone gets their rights. Or at least stops getting bullied or killed over their sexuality. There are still people who are 40 or 50 and still dealing with childhood trauma from being picked on so the machine is just trying to lesson that by accepting everyone. It's annoying but perhaps necessary.

And it is not about actors, they did actually better work than maybe usual to play that tragedy. The writers just forgot to add comedy in it. It felt more educational than a real comedy. This was amazing front to back. Great premise, and Luke Null went all-in on it, knowing the audience would be very uncomfortable for the first two minutes. Great commitment from everyone involved.

I’m a certified personal trainer and most people think that comes from us. I know there are trainers that do dish out meal plans. I’ll have nutrition chats but anything out of my education i advise seeking real advice from dietitians or nutritionist with actual degrees

Maybe they made it a bad skit on purpose so in an ironic twist the skit breaks the fourth wall making it a new kind of funny
they did that once and it wasn't very funny. The skit was called "Jerry's Place".

Totally agree, he suppose to be an unfunny asshole the first two minutes who sucks at being cool. That’s the whole point of the skit. Everybody leaving comments about how the beginning sucked are missing the point.

He literally called the girl a lesbian for not going on a date with him and then makes fun of the Jewish and black guy, It’s so obvious he’s sayin politically incorrect things to purposely make the audience uncomfortable and to set up the punchline when Keenan comes in.

I wanted to love him so bad. Apparently he's a kickass singer. They should bring that out somehow. Everyone loves a dude that can sing. Score him some audience points. He's definitely been out shined by the other two but I still have high hopes for him. Idk if you believe in astrology but he's a cancer. He might take longer to get used to things than other members who are naturally more adventurous.

There's a lot of hate for this skit, but I thought it was quite funny. The humor comes from the awkwardness of the beginning, which makes sense because of him being a new student.
Pyridius Yeah you get to actually feel the discomfort of the class rather than being omniscient. I hate how uncomfortable people are now with any ambiguity in entertainment. The punchline could not have worked as effectively with any other set up.

I don't know if SNL are trying to be provocative to move the agenda on, I hope so, or are just in some cases playing on the discomfort of the audience.
