Not necessarily, if some Airbenders were exiled to the fire nation, they wouldn't want to show their Airbending. If you bring it back to real life there were some jews that helped the Nazis round up the jews.

Aang would have had fun having the opertunity to teach her Airbending. That is the statement the OC is making. And probably entiearly valid considering Aangs personality. Though it should go without saying that this would only happen in the event that Ty Lee joined their gang like Zuko did. Granted, she didn't and so far IU, there isn't a hard confirmation that she is an airbender. Hense why its just a fan theory. 3. It is also worth noting that when they talk about the Airbenders being in Exile, that is not to say that they were cast out of their home by their own people. As the video suggested (but didn't discuss much), after the fall of the temples, many probably would have fled into other kingdoms to find safety. Discarding their traditional clothing to blend in. Covering theit tats. Etc. They are technically living in Exile, away from their homeland for safety. Some, also as the video suggested, would probably hide under the very nose of the Fire Nation itself. And while it is not discussed directly in the video, the Fire Nation Elite interests in the Air Nomadic Lifestyle may have also created sympathizers within the Fire Nation Ranks that could also have helped some benders suvive the genoside. Which in turn can lead to couples and Fire Nation Elities having kids who would have airbending potential. So far, we havent seen anything that suggests its impossible to hide ones bending and we havent seen anything with people bending uncontroable because they lack training. So, without training and growing up in the Fire Nation, Ty Lee could very well be an Air Bender who is just unaware of her herritage.
And the writers could have even pulled off this card in Korra to be like "oh yea all those people were airbenders already and the spirit bs just awakened that"

Hiding in plain sight and the next generation is unaware of this heritage. Except Tylee isn't just an elite as a friend of Azula. It is mentioned her initial appearance that she the daughter of a nobleman and attended the royal firebender academy.
@@SwampKryakwa It wouldn't even be that much of a reach, air nomads are very spritual people, if they had no teachings about spirituality and didn't even know they were airbenders, then it's very likely they woulnd't have any idea on how to airbend. When all the spirit world stuff happened, it's likely that many people would experience enhanced spirituality and therefor find out they were airbenders. Idk.

Actually, part of the theory is that her acrobatics are as good as they are because she has been subconsciously airbending. Now, I grant you, if she had learned actual airbending techniques, she would definitely be an unstoppable force.
I’m pretty sure in Kyoshi’s books her mother was an airbender that lost her ability to airbend. Since airbending is so heavily tied to spirituality when she lost her connection to that she just stopped bending. I think most airbenders would’ve done the same to just assimilate. It happens to a lot of refugees/immigrants rejecting their old cultures to join the more dominant one.
Here’s a neat idea, what if Pema is TyLee’s granddaughter? This would explain her and Tenzin’s kids very natural airbending abilities and closer spiritual connections
@Gladeous it MIGHT work if TyLee conceived Pema at the right age. Pema was around 35 in the show and Tenzin was 51. Tenzin was born in 119 AG and Pema in 135. In Season 1 of Korra, Jinora was 10 meaning they likely were married when Tenzin was 41 and Pema 25. Now, Ty Lee was 14 during the final year of the war, which would put her at 49 when Pema was born. So while it’s possible, it’s usually unlikely, but with Katara being a healing master, she probably helped a lot of her friends births go smoothly and heal the womb faster.
Pema's parents/grandparents were most likely the budding couple shown in one of the comics. They didn't involve Ty Lee. So I doubt the two are related.
And what you can add is, that many people in the legend of Korra woke up after harmonic convergence with sudden airbending powers, without knowing about anything about that earlier. and I think, that something like that can't come from nothing. They probably had roots from some air nomads, but didn't know about them and thus also not knowing, that they could airbend or that this power is somewhat hidden and hard to access in their genes / heritage. And considering, that Ty Lee as well as the air nomads has brown eyes and not orange ones like the people from the fire nation, also speaks in favor of this theory.

Of course, some person in each nation will have variations, that's just nature. But Ty Lee, as one of Azula's closest friends and higher ranking assailants, it makes sense and seems to be hinting towards her having air nomad root.
@@vetarlittorf1807 you're right in the point, that the energy shift turned these nonbenders into airbenders, but only a part of nonbenders obtained the ability to airbend and not every nonbender. so there should be a certain reason, why these distinct nonbenders became airbenders. and i think, that the energy shift from harmonic convergence just acted like a catalyst. so that, as i already explained, this energy shift brought these hidden or weak powers to the surface. that's at least what I theorize
She isn't a Air Bender but, I think she has Air Nomad in her genealogy. She has those grey eyes like Aang. Maybe another reason we also don't see airbenders in the Last Airbender is the same reason the neanderthals when exinct.
Similar eyes and facial structure as Aang could just be coincidence but I don't think the writers would just put those details in for no reason so Ty Lee having air nomad in her genes could still be possible, but I don't believe she can air bend. Even if she could and her family had been exiled to the fire nation, no way would she expose her abilities and risk death so easily. She simply isn't a bender.
Not to mention hermanic conversions. I believe what air nomads that weren't killed went into hiding within the water tribes, Earth kingdom, and the fire nation. Those kids that were born to bend air were told not to use there abilities so over the course of the year's air bending became obsolete until harmonic convergence unlocked the abilities of those who were already descendants of Air Nomads finally bringing back balance between the four elements.

Ty Lee attended the Royal Fire Academy for Girls, where she met Azula and Mai. She's 100% part of the elite, kinda ridiculous if anyone thinks otherwise. Given her hair and eye colour, plus her movements, I'd say Ty Lee was always intended to be an Air Nomad descendant. But that doesn't make her an air bender. Most of the temples have little damage, which would be odd if they were all attacked during Sozin's comet. It's more likely the major groups were killed, then the 'few' that Zhao mentioned was probably a lot larger percentage than he thought. The air nomads aren't exactly a big group after all, so even catching a hundred in those traps is probably double digits percentage of their population. The remaining went to ground, with the ones who tried to pass on their air bending being far more likely to get caught. After a century, those who still practiced were weeded out, leading just descendants, many of whom were probably unaware of their origins.
Each persons eye color correlates to what nation they belong to (bender and non bender). Fire- golden/orange color, water-blue, earth-brown, and air-grey. I dont think it would be too far fetched if ty lee was a descendent from the air nomads. Now im basing this on her eye color alone 😂
It should also be mentioned that the temples in the show weren’t demolished or massively damaged. What were they? They look as if everyone just got up and left. Really the flashback of the temples being on fire was more of a symbolic thing.
I noticed this as a kid: Ty Lee has the same eye color as air benders. Or at least, as air nomads. The show is incredibly consistent when it comes to eye colors to denote where somebody is from. Water tribe always has blue eyes. Earth Kingdom is always green eyes. Fire nation is always hazel. Air nomads are always gray. So it's REALLY WEIRD that Ty Lee has gray eyes when everybody else has hazel. I don't think she's an air bender, but one of her parents was _definitely_ an air nomad.
Another point to support your claim is people like Kyoshi's mother who were airbenders and gave up their culture (but were still airbenders). Kyoshi's mother couldn't have been the only one to do such a thing-- even if for different reasons.
Even if a few air benders had suppressed their powers and assimilated into the other nations, Aang is still more likely than not the last Air Bender whose blood line would more than likely trace back to the first air benders Wan met all those years ago. No one probably has more than 10% Air Nomad ancestry outside of Aang's immediate descendants (Kya/Bumi/Tezin 50%; Ikki/Melo/Jinora/Rohan 25%). I think most of the new air nation in Korra (especially from season 3 on) are probably more static as they probably have a primary address at one of the 5 temples from which they are sent out on peace keeping missions or whatever from. Relics could possibly hint at that the original 4 temples were more or less schools and that there could be settlements (even if they lack permanent residents) marked with the traditional markers as seen in expanded lore, maybe some acolytes and benders might live out there now to aid travelers by offering shelter and resources for little or no cost (because upkeep or orphans or something)
I've personally squared the circle this way; Aang was the last Air Bender, i.e. The Last Practitioner of the Art of Air Bending by the last year of the War. However, there were lots of people with Air Bender ancestry, perhaps some with the knack for Air Bending but who's powers have remained latent and stunted as a result of no one being able to teach them, no one is going to pick up a guitar without knowing how it works and become Eddy Van Valen, no matter innate talent for music, you will pick up that you can play it like a harp, perhaps you'll learn how to tune it, even learn that by pressing down on the frets you can get different pitches, but no one man can invent everything, add to that, that there is a hostile power that wants to kill guitar players. So yeah, I think the Air Nomads assimilated into the other nations and stopped practising air bending so as not to draw attention from the Fire Nation.
I feel like Ty Lee has air nation dna, but I think she's mixed. I think in terms of her bending abilities, her fire nation side is the one that came through, and she ended up being a non bender. In the same way I think Bumi got Kataras water bender side of things, but ended up a non bender.
but during harmonic convergence bumi got his air bending. the most likely possibility is that they either didn't know they could airbend or they did have airbending but it was locked somehow
I think the interesting thing is they can still say he's the last Airbender and it not contradict there being others that survived. By the time of the show he was likely the last living Airbender anyone after that 100 years probably didn't actually know they could Airbend. Yeah it's probably only 2 generations from when they were still alive but if the surviors tried their best to not use it and had kids they most likely would not teach them to protect them right there the first generation after Aang wouldn't know from there one or more generations (by the time of the show) and even if your grandma was an actual Air nomad you would probably never know you could likely have that gene active. So by the time of Korra yeah it totally makes sense they had tons of people "becoming" airbenders like others have said it's them just awakening their genes from their ancestors.
A generation is usually 20 years, so it could be 5 generation after. Royalty (ie the Fire Nation Royalty) isn’t that good to go off of since they rule til they die regardless of how old
I would say, whether or not Ty Lee was an air nomad, it was likely that Aang was not the last air nomad. That said, he most likely WAS indeed the last air bender. Air bending is a very spiritual art, so people that don't know they have the ability would likely never unlock it unless they happen to also be a fan of air nomad history and philosophy like Zaheer was. Kyoshi's mother, a master airbender, almost lost her airbending when she turned to a life of crime. If an airbending master's abilities can wane that much without the spiritual connection, I doubt an untrained person could do anything without a spiritual connection.
This is a smart theory, and very well put-together. It also fits with Ty Lee becoming a Kyoshi warrior at the end. I think that Kyoshi herself was related to an airbender.

Perhaps she is descended from air nomads with the bending gene shut off. I'd say she looks more like Jinora than Aang with that hairdo she has. I think that the people who became air benders after harmonic convergence are descended from air nomads, must have at least one airbending ancestor somewhere in the line.
I doubt she's an Airbender but that doesn't mean she can't be a descendent. If you think about Korra's Harmonic convergence, a bunch of non benders suddenly became benders. Where do you think that ability came from? Airbenders likely slowly blended into society and therefore their bending became dormant in their descendants as being an Airbender was a death sentence. Chances are, all the people you see who became Airbender were descendants
This makes me think of the Fairly Odd Parents and the theory that Trixie’s BFF is actually her fairy due to the pupils in the eyes(humans in that universe don’t have pupils, but the fairies do). Since they were both Nickelodeon shows, I could see them creating those parallels
Another theory : Just like the other nations have citizens that aren't benders, it could be that a large number of air nomads weren't airbenders. Those that were got sent to the temples for training, but the rest lived a nomadic lifestyle. When the purge began, there may have been air nomads that got caught like in the vid, but the rest could have lost their identities as air nomads, settling down in villages and hiding their roots. Aang could be the last airbender, but there could be descendants of air nomads, and amongst them could be people capable of air bending but not knowing they can or who could teach them.
in fact, yes all air nomads were airbenders and they all got hunted after the attack on the temples. by the time of TLA aang is the only airbender and only person with air nomad blood
So this is really interesting because if Ty Lee was an Airbender but doesn't realize until later on and since when she does find out about it, and she probably doesn't know how to do it then Aang could just teach her.
I mean technically Aang is the last "pure-blooded" airbender, or at least the last known "pure-blooded" airbender. Even if the fire nation managed to track down and genocide most airbenders, there's probably small, exclusive enclaves of airbenders descended fron small groups of airbenders who escaped during sozin's genocide.
airbending as other elements requires at least a certain lifestyle or mindset. Korra struggled to learn airbending despite it (airbending) being in her. Same with Aang learning earthbending. So it'd be no surprise if all airbenders in Earth kingdom have no idea about being benders. It's pretty cool how bending is connected with the culture, mindset and personality.

I don't think she's an airbender but she could have Air nomad ancenstry since many Air nomads travelled and most likely mixed with other nations. Example Avatar Kyoshi's mother was an Air nomad while her father Earth Kingdom.
I have this head canon of my own that all of the people that we see gain airbending in LoK, are distant descendants of the air nomads that survived the initial massacre at the temples that don’t already have the bending powers of another nation’s element (most likely Earth) as the remaining nomads would’ve blended in with the other nations and in many cases, would’ve settled down and had kids with non-air nomad peoples. That is why so many of the airbenders in LoK are originally from the Earth Kingdom. I also think that it’s no coincidence that Bumi of all people happened to become an airbender too. I think Ty Lee could be one of those descendants, even if she’s a citizen of the fire nation.

It is possible the Monks and Nuns returned to the Temples to celebrate some big event. It could even connect to Sonzin's Comet. We don't know what Sozin's Comet was called or how it was treated before AG.

@@LetsPlayArcanium If they were all that scattered they wouldn't likely have heard of the Fire Nation attack. I doubt most would have been in hiding. Nomads don't exactly have many ways of communicating long distances. So, Air Nomads might have started heading to each of the Temples unaware of the Fire Nation; which could have intercepted them. There were some Nomads that were in hiding but I doubt it was the majority.
Good video overall, however, I would say it is actually quite probable that the vast majority of The Air Nomads were at the Air Temples when The Fire Nation attacked for one likely reason, The Autumn Equinox. This is because each of the bending elements is tied to one of the four seasons, the season for Air being Autumn, and The Air Nomads, being a deeply spiritual race, not to mention the only nation consisting entirely of benders, would have likely for this reason considered The Autumn Equinox to be a holy day, perhaps even their most holy day. It is for this reason that I hypothesize that the nation's citizens potentially congregated at the temples for the festivities, and not only that, but since they were an egalitarian people, most of them would have been expected to be there days in advance in order to help set everything up. As Sozin's Comet is known to show up at the end of every 100th Summer, this, for the reasons above, actually would have put most of the Air Nomads there during the attacks. Despite all of this however, the mysticism of Nomad theology should have pointed to The Great Comet as it was then called being the moment at which the war would begin, as, given their probably vast knowledge of The Heavens, they SHOULD HAVE known that a comet was coming and cancelled the festival. My guess is they tried, but the Air Nomads were proud of their disconnectivity with the mundane trapping of the world, such as politics, and probably just paid it no heed. At least a few of The Air Nomads did survive, as is evidenced by when dozens of nonbenders, their descendents, became Airbenders after Harmonic Convergence in The Legend of Korra. Also, as much as I like the idea of Ty Lee being an Airbender, the events of LoK basically stated that that was the first time in over a century that Airnomads who did not descend from Aang existed again, so I highly doubt it unforchunately.
Fire Nation and Air Nomads were super close friends at the time though. Even Roku never thought Sozin might go that far until Sozin attempted to assassinate him - and only partially failed, Roku died soon after. It’s unlikely that the Air Nomads in general considered the Fire Nation to be a serious threat. Some like Gyatso obviously suspected something, but that’s hardly enough to cut off such a celebration, especially when Gyatso had so little control even over Aang’s growth. Nonetheless it seems likely Ty Lee is probably heavily influenced by Airbender movement styles. Heck, it’s practically confirmed by the RPG book directly associating Chi blocking with Airbending, and then making that an influential movement in the Fire Nation during Roku’s life.
And Sozin definitely would be the kind of person to plan his raid during a time where he'd be sure to get most if not all airbenders the easiest, so yeah i don't think that many were missed
Tylee could also be Aangs sisters grand-daughter. Who knows!?! The whole concept is also that anyone could be a fire/earth/air/water bender but being trained in the discipline is focused around nations. In the sequel we started seeing this break down, so she could be a fire nation born air bender.
In the episode “The Drill”, Azula orders Mai and Ty Lee to “take the earthbenders out”! Despite the earthbenders being military, Ty Lee never went for the kill, as her chi-blocking was deliberately nonlethal!
Actually in the legends RPG book Ty-lees great grandmother was Sozin’s sister thus Ty-lee isn’t possibly partially air nomad descended but she’s actually also Azula’s cousin, which is the hidden double irony, (add the series 2 harmonic convergence if stuck in an time/ space dialation scenario , like with the magic the gathering card game time spiral era and things would get even WEIRDER)…. Ty-Lee’s grandmother married an air Nomad, which answered the how did Sozin’s forces get into the air temples Easy : Sozin had made alliances with banished and Rouge air nomads , because another rouge monk was from the TCG card game Named “Afriko” the Ill wind , so Since Sozin’s sister had an air Nomad husband, Sozin didn’t want his own sister being against his Rule apparently, hence he avoided Death by ironic twist based events….

Sometimes being born or gaining bending of any type is based on genetics, so in that earth bending families with an hidden air nomad ancestor gained air bending after harmonic convergence, so if sozin,s sister was in an deep friendship with the temples various monks and nuns and then as it's rumored in Canon having had been in an deep relationship with an air nomad and since the fire nation of Yu-Dao had people whose grandparents hid their air nomad relics/ possessions including their novice monk clothing, it's highly logical that this wasn't just isolated to only the earth kingdom people inter-genetically breeding or having relationships with air nomad survivors of the temples that if not banished from the temples and were only willing to help sozin get into the temples in order not to be killed outright, which is the most likely reason that people based on sozin's sister being in an relationship with an air nomad , is in this theory one of the reasons ty-lee doesn't have the eye colors or additude of her fellow fire Nation female counterparts.... Ty lee actually being an air bender imo would really undermine a lot of the story arcs, specifically aang’s growth That being said if she had air nomad roots would be really cool, it’s said all air nomads are born bender because of their spiritual connection but it makes sense if a few of the air nomads who escaped the temples having children would probably be very disconnected spiritually. So it’s entirely possible that Ty lee and her family have air nomad roots but are so disconnected from the culture and definitely cannot air bend That is the best theory imo
Note that even if Ty Lee is an airbender, Aang is still the last Air Nomad. She was never taught her ancestors heritage and raised with a different culture
This has been a theory for a few years now. I believe Ty Lee is a decendent of some escaped Air Nomads, BUT I guess the bending ability got thinned out over time so that's why Ty Lee doesn't have it. I also saw a theory that in LoK, Tenzin's wife, Pehma(?), is a descendent of Ty Lee.
I feel like the air nomads could have been at the temples for a celebration or a sacred time when the fire nation attacked. That would explain why all the nomads were at their temples, and give more lore into their culture. Plus Sozin (the fire lord who started the war, i cant remember if that was him or not) would have known about their culture from the air nomads teaching it to them.
Or the fact if the fire nation was targeting them the air temples were literally impossible to invade until the commit. There was no flight tech back then but we see fire benders can use fire to fly during the comet. There for it's likely that they were hiding there in the temples.
I doubt that they will completely destroy Korra's timeline by making more people bend before her time. I absolutely agree she should have Airbender roots. I assume just assume the bending just quietly got snuffed out over generations of non use. Plus apparently airbending especially can be damaged by spiritual/mental conflict. One nomad almost completely lost her bending after becoming a bandit. Hiding among the people that killed their families might have caused such an inner conflict that they lost touch with their bending. After that the constant propaganda against their own people couldn't have been good for the descendents spiritually.
Ok so. This is something i noticed while watching "bitter work". Iroh says that the air nomads "apparently have really good senses of humor". But, like, how tf would he know that. And in the episode "return to Omashu" Ty Lee mentions that Iroh was pretty funny. Doesn't prove much but its a thing I noticed and didnt see anyone point it out so.. I just did now

I think Ty Lee was a descendant of an airbender and not really an airbender. As I remember in the Kyoshi novel, airbenders' abilities weaken if they lose sight of their spirituality, like what happened to Kyoshi's mother. So, I think what happened is Ty Lee's ancestors might have escaped the genocide, detached themselves from air nomad rituals to avoid death, made money to survive through the circus and overtime, lost their abilities and their descendants airbending capabilities.
I feel like the air benders would rather sacrifice their life to protect their spiritual temple rather than just running away, hence only “the few” airbenders leaving.
I think it would have been a real mind f*ck for both Hang and Azula and it could have been an interesting arc to explore: Azula would either cast her out or have to keep it secret. You could still said Aang was the last airbender, since he was the last one who could actually airbend from what was shown. however, he wasn't the last air nomad, assuming this theory is correct which i believe it is
One more thing to explain/support this theory. Air bending has been hinted to be more difficult than the other elements and specifically requires spiritual connection/development. I'm willing to wager, Ty Lee maybe had bits of Air nomad culture in her and maybe had the potential to be able to airbend, but perhaps something was blocking her from fully being able to do it.

That would actually be pretty cool, and could explain a few things. Minor, subconscious airbending that boosts her combat abilities as well as making her a better circus acrobat. Title of the show still works as is, since Aang is still pretty much the last fully member of an airbending society with proper training and tattoos. And who's to say others couldn't re-learn some airbending later, like how Toph learned from the giant mole things rather than formal training.
In legend of Korra benders that didn't bend suddenly got power to do so after harmonic convergence, i would like to think that Ty Lee is one of these people who get airbending, except she would either be dead or very old at that point.

For real this should have been actualized in the series. At the very least ...she could have shown back up as a too youthful old lady in Korra and have been among the new air benders. But whats more annoying is that Aang should be able to give people bending after the events of the series and his experience with the Lion Turtle. Ty Lee, Sokka, and Suki would all be great candidates to be Avatar invoked airbenders. I mean a big issue for Korra to deal with is that Aang didn't do enough to restore Airbenders after the war, and a lot of what Korra goes through proves that it was within his power to do so, he just didn't realize it (apparently)
One idea for why the Nomads were largely at the temples could be because the Nomads knew in advance that the fire nation was going to attack, and wanted the temples to be as best defended as possible.
Just look at the color of their eyes, that gives a hint as to what type of bender they could be. Airbenders have gray eyes, water benders have blue eyes, earth benders have green eyes, fire benders have a reddish brown eye color. There are plenty of characters throughout the series that have gray eyes, the most common actually appear in the episode where Aang pretends to be a fire nation student. A lot of the children at the school have gray eyes which would indicate that they have airbender ancestors. Even though Ty Lee could have airbender ancestors she has the reddish brown eye color of the fire nation. The creators of Avatar the Last Airbender we're very consistent in making sure that the eye color matched the bending style. Because of this, I don't think she was actually an airbender, just a well trained acrobat/chi blocker...but that's just my personal opinion.
@@ethanmutrie7301 I disagree, I rewatched the clips and looked up some more myself and she always seems to have the same brownish red color that I had mentioned not really any hint of grey unless the lighting in the scene was different. Even then, it's still not even comparable to Aang's gray eyes.
I've alwyas assumed Ty lee was a air bender descendent along with all the new air benders in kora since boomi became an air bender. Thus ty lee's children would be new air benders.
Actually their is a possibility that what happen is that the air nomad or airbenders become concentrated on the temple because of the war or impending war. I mean if your a country or a clan that travels in group as soon as a war to eradicate your kind began or even if its just a possibility most of you will probably go to your base and try to group together for safety. Also just like the southern water tribe in my understanding not everyone born of their tribe is a bender. Those who scape must have lost chance to practice bending and those with talent can possibly be like katara who does have anybody to teach them and with time will just leave like a normal person.

The eyes of the people in avatar world always reflect their nation. Water tribes blue, Earth kingdom green, Fire nation hazel/brown and Air nomads grey. Even in legend of Korra this is preserved as a predominant genetic trace (Mako have hazel/brown eyes and Bolin green eyes). I can't think of any exception other than Ty Lee, since her eyes are grey I think this theory is very true about her genealogy. The bending part cannot be proven by that, but it would be very nice and a very good explanation for her to excel over any other fighter in agility. I think she is not aware of it tho, otherwise it would be part of the history. Or is it yet about to be...?

3. It is also worth noting that when they talk about the Airbenders being in Exile, that is not to say that they were cast out of their home by their own people. As the video suggested (but didn't discuss much), after the fall of the temples, many probably would have fled into other kingdoms to find safety. Discarding their traditional clothing to blend in. Covering theit tats. Etc. They are technically living in Exile, away from their homeland for safety. Some, also as the video suggested, would probably hide under the very nose of the Fire Nation itself. And while it is not discussed directly in the video, the Fire Nation Elite interests in the Air Nomadic Lifestyle may have also created sympathizers within the Fire Nation Ranks that could also have helped some benders suvive the genoside. Which in turn can lead to couples and Fire Nation Elities having kids who would have airbending potential.
So far, we havent seen anything that suggests its impossible to hide ones bending and we havent seen anything with people bending uncontroable because they lack training. So, without training and growing up in the Fire Nation, Ty Lee could very well be an Air Bender who is just unaware of her herritage.

I’m pretty sure in Kyoshi’s books her mother was an airbender that lost her ability to airbend. Since airbending is so heavily tied to spirituality when she lost her connection to that she just stopped bending. I think most airbenders would’ve done the same to just assimilate. It happens to a lot of refugees/immigrants rejecting their old cultures to join the more dominant one.
What better way to hide and survive then plausible deniability in this situation

@Gladeous it MIGHT work if TyLee conceived Pema at the right age. Pema was around 35 in the show and Tenzin was 51. Tenzin was born in 119 AG and Pema in 135. In Season 1 of Korra, Jinora was 10 meaning they likely were married when Tenzin was 41 and Pema 25.
Now, Ty Lee was 14 during the final year of the war, which would put her at 49 when Pema was born. So while it’s possible, it’s usually unlikely, but with Katara being a healing master, she probably helped a lot of her friends births go smoothly and heal the womb faster.

Of course, some person in each nation will have variations, that's just nature. @@vetarlittorf1807 you're right in the point, that the energy shift turned these nonbenders into airbenders, but only a part of nonbenders obtained the ability to airbend and not every nonbender. so there should be a certain reason, why these distinct nonbenders became airbenders. and i think, that the energy shift from harmonic convergence just acted like a catalyst. so that, as i already explained, this energy shift brought these hidden or weak powers to the surface.

Similar eyes and facial structure as Aang could just be coincidence but I don't think the writers would just put those details in for no reason so Ty Lee having air nomad in her genes could still be possible, but I don't believe she can air bend. Even if she could and her family had been exiled to the fire nation, no way would she expose her abilities and risk death so easily. She simply isn't a bender.

Ty Lee attended the Royal Fire Academy for Girls, where she met Azula and Mai. She's 100% part of the elite, kinda ridiculous if anyone thinks otherwise. Given her hair and eye colour, plus her movements, I'd say Ty Lee was always intended to be an Air Nomad descendant. But that doesn't make her an air bender.
Most of the temples have little damage, which would be odd if they were all attacked during Sozin's comet. It's more likely the major groups were killed, then the 'few' that Zhao mentioned was probably a lot larger percentage than he thought. The air nomads aren't exactly a big group after all, so even catching a hundred in those traps is probably double digits percentage of their population. The remaining went to ground, with the ones who tried to pass on their air bending being far more likely to get caught. After a century, those who still practiced were weeded out, leading just descendants, many of whom were probably unaware of their origins.
Each persons eye color correlates to what nation they belong to (bender and non bender). Fire- golden/orange color, water-blue, earth-brown, and air-grey. I dont think it would be too far fetched if ty lee was a descendent from the air nomads. Now im basing this on her eye color alone 😂

It should also be mentioned that the temples in the show weren’t demolished or massively damaged. What were they? They look as if everyone just got up and left. Really the flashback of the temples being on fire was more of a symbolic thing.

Ty-Lee was always my favorite of Azula's group. Her being so spiritually attuned, unburdened and cheerful just makes sense as an Air Nomad.
I noticed this as a kid: Ty Lee has the same eye color as air benders. Or at least, as air nomads. The show is incredibly consistent when it comes to eye colors to denote where somebody is from. Water tribe always has blue eyes. Earth Kingdom is always green eyes. Fire nation is always hazel. Air nomads are always gray. So it's REALLY WEIRD that Ty Lee has gray eyes when everybody else has hazel. I don't think she's an air bender, but one of her parents was _definitely_ an air nomad.
It's not just the eyes, she literally has the same FACE as Aang. Like Jinora with her tattoos.
Another point to support your claim is people like Kyoshi's mother who were airbenders and gave up their culture (but were still airbenders). Kyoshi's mother couldn't have been the only one to do such a thing-- even if for different reasons.

Even if a few air benders had suppressed their powers and assimilated into the other nations, Aang is still more likely than not the last Air Bender whose blood line would more than likely trace back to the first air benders Wan met all those years ago. No one probably has more than 10% Air Nomad ancestry outside of Aang's immediate descendants (Kya/Bumi/Tezin 50%; Ikki/Melo/Jinora/Rohan 25%). I think most of the new air nation in Korra (especially from season 3 on) are probably more static as they probably have a primary address at one of the 5 temples from which they are sent out on peace keeping missions or whatever from. Relics could possibly hint at that the original 4 temples were more or less schools and that there could be settlements (even if they lack permanent residents) marked with the traditional markers as seen in expanded lore, maybe some acolytes and benders might live out there now to aid travelers by offering shelter and resources for little or no cost (because upkeep or orphans or something)

I've personally squared the circle this way; Aang was the last Air Bender, i.e. The Last Practitioner of the Art of Air Bending by the last year of the War. However, there were lots of people with Air Bender ancestry, perhaps some with the knack for Air Bending but who's powers have remained latent and stunted as a result of no one being able to teach them, no one is going to pick up a guitar without knowing how it works and become Eddy Van Valen, no matter innate talent for music, you will pick up that you can play it like a harp, perhaps you'll learn how to tune it, even learn that by pressing down on the frets you can get different pitches, but no one man can invent everything, add to that, that there is a hostile power that wants to kill guitar players.
So yeah, I think the Air Nomads assimilated into the other nations and stopped practising air bending so as not to draw attention from the Fire Nation.

I feel like Ty Lee has air nation dna, but I think she's mixed. I think in terms of her bending abilities, her fire nation side is the one that came through, and she ended up being a non bender. In the same way I think Bumi got Kataras water bender side of things, but ended up a non bender.

I think the interesting thing is they can still say he's the last Airbender and it not contradict there being others that survived. By the time of the show he was likely the last living Airbender anyone after that 100 years probably didn't actually know they could Airbend. Yeah it's probably only 2 generations from when they were still alive but if the surviors tried their best to not use it and had kids they most likely would not teach them to protect them right there the first generation after Aang wouldn't know from there one or more generations (by the time of the show) and even if your grandma was an actual Air nomad you would probably never know you could likely have that gene active. So by the time of Korra yeah it totally makes sense they had tons of people "becoming" airbenders like others have said it's them just awakening their genes from their ancestors.
A generation is usually 20 years, so it could be 5 generation after. Royalty (ie the Fire Nation Royalty) isn’t that good to go off of since they rule til they die regardless of how old

I would say, whether or not Ty Lee was an air nomad, it was likely that Aang was not the last air nomad. That said, he most likely WAS indeed the last air bender. Air bending is a very spiritual art, so people that don't know they have the ability would likely never unlock it unless they happen to also be a fan of air nomad history and philosophy like Zaheer was. Kyoshi's mother, a master airbender, almost lost her airbending when she turned to a life of crime. If an airbending master's abilities can wane that much without the spiritual connection, I doubt an untrained person could do anything without a spiritual connection.
This is a smart theory, and very well put-together.

I doubt she's an Airbender but that doesn't mean she can't be a descendent. If you think about Korra's Harmonic convergence, a bunch of non benders suddenly became benders. Where do you think that ability came from? Airbenders likely slowly blended into society and therefore their bending became dormant in their descendants as being an Airbender was a death sentence. Chances are, all the people you see who became Airbender were descendants
This makes me think of the Fairly Odd Parents and the theory that Trixie’s BFF is actually her fairy due to the pupils in the eyes(humans in that universe don’t have pupils, but the fairies do). Since they were both Nickelodeon shows, I could see them creating those parallels

Another theory : Just like the other nations have citizens that aren't benders, it could be that a large number of air nomads weren't airbenders. Those that were got sent to the temples for training, but the rest lived a nomadic lifestyle. When the purge began, there may have been air nomads that got caught like in the vid, but the rest could have lost their identities as air nomads, settling down in villages and hiding their roots. Aang could be the last airbender, but there could be descendants of air nomads, and amongst them could be people capable of air bending but not knowing they can or who could teach them.
I do agree that there are air nomad descendants around, but not all air nomads were benders. Aang is most likely still the last airbender at the time

The instant I saw this in my suggestions I was like "It's her face, isn't it? She has that Air Nomad face and that sweet personality to match."
I mean technically Aang is the last "pure-blooded" airbender, or at least the last known "pure-blooded" airbender. Even if the fire nation managed to track down and genocide most airbenders, there's probably small, exclusive enclaves of airbenders descended fron small groups of airbenders who escaped during sozin's genocide.
airbending as other elements requires at least a certain lifestyle or mindset. Korra struggled to learn airbending despite it (airbending) being in her. Same with Aang learning earthbending. So it'd be no surprise if all airbenders in Earth kingdom have no idea about being benders. It's pretty cool how bending is connected with the culture, mindset and personality.

I don't think she's an airbender but she could have Air nomad ancenstry since many Air nomads travelled and most likely mixed with other nations. Example Avatar Kyoshi's mother was an Air nomad while her father Earth Kingdom.
Even if she isn't an Airbender, she could be one of the people who could become one after the spirit world gate being opened in Korra.
I have this head canon of my own that all of the people that we see gain airbending in LoK, are distant descendants of the air nomads that survived the initial massacre at the temples that don’t already have the bending powers of another nation’s element (most likely Earth) as the remaining nomads would’ve blended in with the other nations and in many cases, would’ve settled down and had kids with non-air nomad peoples. That is why so many of the airbenders in LoK are originally from the Earth Kingdom. I also think that it’s no coincidence that Bumi of all people happened to become an airbender too. I think Ty Lee could be one of those descendants, even if she’s a citizen of the fire nation.

It is possible the Monks and Nuns returned to the Temples to celebrate some big event. It could even connect to Sonzin's Comet. We don't know what Sozin's Comet was called or how it was treated before AG.

Nomads don't exactly have many ways of communicating long distances. So, Air Nomads might have started heading to each of the Temples unaware of the Fire Nation; which could have intercepted them.
There were some Nomads that were in hiding but I doubt it was the majority.
Good video overall, however, I would say it is actually quite probable that the vast majority of The Air Nomads were at the Air Temples when The Fire Nation attacked for one likely reason, The Autumn Equinox. This is because each of the bending elements is tied to one of the four seasons, the season for Air being Autumn, and The Air Nomads, being a deeply spiritual race, not to mention the only nation consisting entirely of benders, would have likely for this reason considered The Autumn Equinox to be a holy day, perhaps even their most holy day. It is for this reason that I hypothesize that the nation's citizens potentially congregated at the temples for the festivities, and not only that, but since they were an egalitarian people, most of them would have been expected to be there days in advance in order to help set everything up. As Sozin's Comet is known to show up at the end of every 100th Summer, this, for the reasons above, actually would have put most of the Air Nomads there during the attacks. Despite all of this however, the mysticism of Nomad theology should have pointed to The Great Comet as it was then called being the moment at which the war would begin, as, given their probably vast knowledge of The Heavens, they SHOULD HAVE known that a comet was coming and cancelled the festival. My guess is they tried, but the Air Nomads were proud of their disconnectivity with the mundane trapping of the world, such as politics, and probably just paid it no heed. At least a few of The Air Nomads did survive, as is evidenced by when dozens of nonbenders, their descendents, became Airbenders after Harmonic Convergence in The Legend of Korra. Also, as much as I like the idea of Ty Lee being an Airbender, the events of LoK basically stated that that was the first time in over a century that Airnomads who did not descend from Aang existed again, so I highly doubt it unforchunately.

Fire Nation and Air Nomads were super close friends at the time though. Even Roku never thought Sozin might go that far until Sozin attempted to assassinate him - and only partially failed, Roku died soon after. It’s unlikely that the Air Nomads in general considered the Fire Nation to be a serious threat.
Some like Gyatso obviously suspected something, but that’s hardly enough to cut off such a celebration, especially when Gyatso had so little control even over Aang’s growth.
Nonetheless it seems likely Ty Lee is probably heavily influenced by Airbender movement styles. Heck, it’s practically confirmed by the RPG book directly associating Chi blocking with Airbending, and then making that an influential movement in the Fire Nation during Roku’s life.
And Sozin definitely would be the kind of person to plan his raid during a time where he'd be sure to get most if not all airbenders the easiest, so yeah i don't think that many were missed

The whole concept is also that anyone could be a fire/earth/air/water bender but being trained in the discipline is focused around nations. In the sequel we started seeing this break down, so she could be a fire nation born air bender.
In the episode “The Drill”, Azula orders Mai and Ty Lee to “take the earthbenders out”! Despite the earthbenders being military, Ty Lee never went for the kill, as her chi-blocking was deliberately nonlethal!

Actually in the legends RPG book Ty-lees great grandmother was Sozin’s sister thus Ty-lee isn’t possibly partially air nomad descended but she’s actually also Azula’s cousin, which is the hidden double irony, (add the series 2 harmonic convergence if stuck in an time/ space dialation scenario , like with the magic the gathering card game time spiral era and things would get even WEIRDER)….

Sometimes being born or gaining bending of any type is based on genetics, so in that earth bending families with an hidden air nomad ancestor gained air bending after harmonic convergence, so if sozin,s sister was in an deep friendship with the temples various monks and nuns and then as it's rumored in Canon having had been in an deep relationship with an air nomad and since the fire nation of Yu-Dao had people whose grandparents hid their air nomad relics/ possessions including their novice monk clothing, it's highly logical that this wasn't just isolated to only the earth kingdom people inter-genetically breeding or having relationships with air nomad survivors of the temples that if not banished from the temples and were only willing to help sozin get into the temples in order not to be killed outright, which is the most likely reason that people based on sozin's sister being in an relationship with an air nomad , is in this theory one of the reasons ty-lee doesn't have the eye colors or additude of her fellow fire Nation female counterparts....

Ty lee actually being an air bender imo would really undermine a lot of the story arcs, specifically aang’s growth
That being said if she had air nomad roots would be really cool, it’s said all air nomads are born bender because of their spiritual connection but it makes sense if a few of the air nomads who escaped the temples having children would probably be very disconnected spiritually. So it’s entirely possible that Ty lee and her family have air nomad roots but are so disconnected from the culture and definitely cannot air bend

Note that even if Ty Lee is an airbender, Aang is still the last Air Nomad. She was never taught her ancestors heritage and raised with a different culture

This has been a theory for a few years now. I believe Ty Lee is a decendent of some escaped Air Nomads, BUT I guess the bending ability got thinned out over time so that's why Ty Lee doesn't have it.
I also saw a theory that in LoK, Tenzin's wife, Pehma(?), is a descendent of Ty Lee.

I feel like the air nomads could have been at the temples for a celebration or a sacred time when the fire nation attacked. That would explain why all the nomads were at their temples, and give more lore into their culture. Plus Sozin (the fire lord who started the war, i cant remember if that was him or not) would have known about their culture from the air nomads teaching it to them.
Or the fact if the fire nation was targeting them the air temples were literally impossible to invade until the commit. There was no flight tech back then but we see fire benders can use fire to fly during the comet. There for it's likely that they were hiding there in the temples.

I doubt that they will completely destroy Korra's timeline by making more people bend before her time. I absolutely agree she should have Airbender roots. I assume just assume the bending just quietly got snuffed out over generations of non use. Plus apparently airbending especially can be damaged by spiritual/mental conflict. One nomad almost completely lost her bending after becoming a bandit. Hiding among the people that killed their families might have caused such an inner conflict that they lost touch with their bending.
After that the constant propaganda against their own people couldn't have been good for the descendents spiritually.

I think Ty Lee was a descendant of an airbender and not really an airbender. As I remember in the Kyoshi novel, airbenders' abilities weaken if they lose sight of their spirituality, like what happened to Kyoshi's mother. So, I think what happened is Ty Lee's ancestors might have escaped the genocide, detached themselves from air nomad rituals to avoid death, made money to survive through the circus and overtime, lost their abilities and their descendants airbending capabilities.
I feel like the air benders would rather sacrifice their life to protect their spiritual temple rather than just running away, hence only “the few” airbenders leaving.
Some could have hid, and lost the trait for airbending through the generations

I think it would have been a real mind f*ck for both Hang and Azula and it could have been an interesting arc to explore: Azula would either cast her out or have to keep it secret. Or maybe the reveal could have been during the prison escape where she turns against Azula. It would have explained her mental breakdown even more at the end.

I think Ty Lee has air nomad roots and clearly studies the hand to hand combat style of the air nomads but I don’t think she bends air.
One more thing to explain/support this theory. Air bending has been hinted to be more difficult than the other elements and specifically requires spiritual connection/development. I'm willing to wager, Ty Lee maybe had bits of Air nomad culture in her and maybe had the potential to be able to airbend, but perhaps something was blocking her from fully being able to do it.
I think Ty Lee may have air nomad heritage because she shares may physical features with stereotypical air nomads. but that doesn’t make her an air bender…because she doesn’t bend lol

Ty Lee would only truly be an Air Nomad if she embraced the Air Nomad lifestyle. Otherwise she would be Fire Nation with Air Nomad bloodline.
That would actually be pretty cool, and could explain a few things. Minor, subconscious airbending that boosts her combat abilities as well as making her a better circus acrobat.
Title of the show still works as is, since Aang is still pretty much the last fully member of an airbending society with proper training and tattoos.
And who's to say others couldn't re-learn some airbending later, like how Toph learned from the giant mole things rather than formal training.

That is one of the most weirdest thing I’ve ever seen 5:46 wtf also this theory makes a lot sense i’v heard it a lot either people don’t believe it or they do.
For real this should have been actualized in the series. At the very least ...she could have shown back up as a too youthful old lady in Korra and have been among the new air benders. But whats more annoying is that Aang should be able to give people bending after the events of the series and his experience with the Lion Turtle. Ty Lee, Sokka, and Suki would all be great candidates to be Avatar invoked airbenders. I mean a big issue for Korra to deal with is that Aang didn't do enough to restore Airbenders after the war, and a lot of what Korra goes through proves that it was within his power to do so, he just didn't realize it (apparently)
One idea for why the Nomads were largely at the temples could be because the Nomads knew in advance that the fire nation was going to attack, and wanted the temples to be as best defended as possible.
Just look at the color of their eyes, that gives a hint as to what type of bender they could be. Airbenders have gray eyes, water benders have blue eyes, earth benders have green eyes, fire benders have a reddish brown eye color.
There are plenty of characters throughout the series that have gray eyes, the most common actually appear in the episode where Aang pretends to be a fire nation student. A lot of the children at the school have gray eyes which would indicate that they have airbender ancestors. Even though Ty Lee could have airbender ancestors she has the reddish brown eye color of the fire nation. The creators of Avatar the Last Airbender we're very consistent in making sure that the eye color matched the bending style. Because of this, I don't think she was actually an airbender, just a well trained acrobat/chi blocker...but that's just my personal opinion.
But she did have grey eyes. They may of had a brown pigment but they were definitely grey for the most part
@@ethanmutrie7301 I disagree, I rewatched the clips and looked up some more myself and she always seems to have the same brownish red color that I had mentioned not really any hint of grey unless the lighting in the scene was different. Even then, it's still not even comparable to Aang's gray eyes.

Actually their is a possibility that what happen is that the air nomad or airbenders become concentrated on the temple because of the war or impending war. I mean if your a country or a clan that travels in group as soon as a war to eradicate your kind began or even if its just a possibility most of you will probably go to your base and try to group together for safety. Also just like the southern water tribe in my understanding not everyone born of their tribe is a bender. Those who scape must have lost chance to practice bending and those with talent can possibly be like katara who does have anybody to teach them and with time will just leave like a normal person.
There’s a theory that Pema is Ty Lee’s daughter. It would make sense that all four of her and Tenzin’s kids are air benders. I love Avatar theory lore aaaaaa
The eyes of the people in avatar world always reflect their nation. Water tribes blue, Earth kingdom green, Fire nation hazel/brown and Air nomads grey.
Even in legend of Korra this is preserved as a predominant genetic trace (Mako have hazel/brown eyes and Bolin green eyes).
I can't think of any exception other than Ty Lee, since her eyes are grey I think this theory is very true about her genealogy.
The bending part cannot be proven by that, but it would be very nice and a very good explanation for her to excel over any other fighter in agility.
I think she is not aware of it tho, otherwise it would be part of the history. Or is it yet about to be...?
Nomads tended to have specific periods when they met up at their settlements, often for religious holidays. I think maybe the comet was such an event.
