  • When she discovers a pearl in the belly of a fish, a Konkani fisherwoman resigned to a mundane life of daily struggle, abandons her trade and indulges in her wildest fantasy. She buys herself a brightly colored rickshaw (“tuk tuk”) and starts to cruise at lightning speed through the winding roads of her coastal village, with her cats in tow. Finally released from her daily drudgery, ecstatic at her newly found sense of power and freedom, she is the talk of the town and her own greatest hero, when, suddenly, an accident threatens to thwart her indomitable spirit.
An exuberant, wild and joyous tale about a woman’s awakening of dormant desires, that celebrates the thrill of adventure and the triumph of dreaming big and pursuing even our most wacky, psychedelic fantasies against all odds. Soulfully told in loud color and trippy animation, the film has won India’s National Award for Animation
(- Indian Film Festival Los Angeles, 2018)
It seems like all of Suresh’s stories come from the Mumbai streetscape. The brash and burly fisherwoman that squeezed through the mad traffic jam in Worli, to get to the other side of the road, happened to walk in front of Suresh, who was already frustrated by the delay to get to a client meeting. As the narrow gap between Suresh’s car and the huge BEST bus in the front( yes, that’s what Mumbai’s bus service is called!) was too little for her to pass through, she got irritated at him for being so close to the bus. Showering him with abuses with precious animated gestures for parking so close, she gathered enough momentum to squeeze through that patch.. Eriyat, both rattled and dumbfounded, sat back and wondered if there was any possible comeback to her aggression. He wondered how effortlessly she meted out such choicest cuss words which he considered solely as a man’s license a few minutes before! She kept looking back at him to check if he dared to get back at her. But she didn’t know that he had already made a mental sketch of her. By the time he reached his studio, he had a storyline and character sketch ready!

When they say there’s no market for original animated films in India, here’s Fisherwoman proving them totally wrong! We definitely have a market for different and unique animation films. You as audiences have proved it yet again as Fisherwoman and Tuk Tuk scores 30 MILLION organic youtube views. This is an unbelievable feat for any film!
For all the naysayers who dissuaded us from producing this film with our own funds, those who called it a pointless exercise when taking 6 long years, without a market to support the short, Fisherwoman proved her worth today. There were many heartbreaking rejections for this film but there were equally joyful acceptances at global film festivals including some very prestigious awards from different parts of the world. Over 60 official selections and 25 odd awards including our own National Award garnished its journey, but we were weary and doubtful whether our own audience would accept this film when we put it out on UA-cam 2 years ago. The acceptance was overwhelming, clocking an average of almost 50000 views a day! Indian animation cannot imagine these sort of numbers is what we were told. We didn’t make it for business. We wanted to inspire our own animation directors to opt for animated story telling for us to have a larger local content industry. An industry that could support more versatile animation story tellers to share their passionate local stories with our own people using the language of animation.
Unlike the misperception for any successful animated film, Fisherwoman and Tuk-Tuk is not a funny slapstick comedy, not a children’s cartoon, but managed to steal people’s hearts. We are so glad to have gone with our instinct. We are grateful and overwhelmed! Thank you audience🙏🏾❤️
Time for it to become a feature or an animated series? Yes or no?

She was good lady by heart, at her last ride she was Smiling, she scolded at cats to get them out, because she don't wanna kill them. She helped Tempo man by money to continue his life, she gave fishs to cats. She did this because she knew that she can't sale fishes now or continue her life and no one can help her. She ended her life beautifully.
    She enjoyed her last ride...
So, don't attached to materialistic thing too much, after achieving your goal, don't forget how you reach there, be calm and enjoy!
Life is precious than any material.
    I liked this video.

Yes, never allow the abyss of your pain to drown your dreams. When she got the mechanic to work on her tuk tuk, I was like " No way". When she sat next to it and relieved the good times she had with it, tears fell down my heart. May we all have good times to relive when things go bad.

After watching the climax for many times, i realized the depth of the scene. Even the minute expressions shown by the character at her last moments, just look at her face when she plays the song for the last time, we can see a painful smile on it and also we can see an emotional connection between fisherwomen and her walking stick at the point before she throw it away. Also her love for those cats❤. Iam still wondering how did you guys created such an intense emotional connection in an animated film. The characters were well created. Even the rikshawala in this movie, his sorrow and disappoinment while seeing wisherwomen with a new tuk tuk, that also hits hard. This movie is such a gem. I watched it after skipping for many times and now i feel regret for being late to watch this masterpiece. We all know she is not real, she is a fictional character. But still she is remaining as a sorrowfull memory in my heart after watching this film. Thanks to the entire team

She fed her 3 cats well and shooed them off before diving off in order for them to live. Idk man I'm like sad but also feeling good. Shoutout to those stretch marks.Loved it.

Weighed down by chunky pure gold earrings, no one dared rob them of these. This is a lovely tribute to their 'live on our own terms ' spirit. They are the true liberated females.

The lesson of this animation is something that I have experienced before. I gave up my job, my career, my friends, family, savings, and all my time for someone that I was so obsessed with. Our relationship were obviously broken but I still kept on fixing it. I was blinded by my obsession and it was totally tearing me apart. It’s a one-sided love. It even came to a point when I tried to take my life for it. Never let that happen. Know your priorities. Don’t let a blackhole be the center of your universe. Know your worth and love yourself. 💕

She daydreams but when she realizes just brushes it off as a distant goal in the future, until luck strucks and she gets to be truly happy. To me it's meaning was extremely odd. Considering the fact that she left her source of income that was helping her to achieve her goals and to have financial stability, it shows how ignorant and small-minded she was. For sure some might try to justify her actions by naming it death put her and her dreams apart, but people need to be realistic. We are here not to be stubborn with our ignorance. People should thrive to be both successful (achieve their dreams), thankful (realistic), and to see the long term consequences to preserve their achievements. Life is not a dream, we are not children, people need to be realistic.

Marvelous story that taught us a lot in 15mins.
    1. Nothing is impossible in this world till you want. Whatever happen, just Live your dreams and happiness. Life is unpredictable brother. She lived her life on her terms even she lost her eyes. So Where there is a will, there is a way.
    2. She knew that she couldnt drive without eyes for a long time that's why she went without cats. It means if you want to live your life on your terms or being selfish, then try no one shouldn't suffer cause of you.
    And last but not least
    3. Today we indulged so deeply in temporary affection that we can't see other things. She was sad for her auto not for her eyes. She left her job and everthing for her auto only. She has forgetten that without money, she wouldn't enjoy her auto ride for a long time. This is the actual scenario of the present. For us temporary things become more important than any other.

The model textures and the colour palette used is reminiscent of old hand drawn movie posters . Ten years back when I was studying animation in India I so much wanted to create something like this , something which would be Indian in every respect and not just an Indianised version of something others did. Thank you guys for making this . Hope you go on to create a full length feature and make the Indian animator community proud .

Each one of us took some different lesson from this story. My interpretation is this....
The Fisher woman loved to sell fishes (as she in the start, smells the fish and finds the smell beautiful), one day she realises that she really wants a tuktuk in her life and this becomes the desire/craze of her life, she thinks about tuktuk (which symbolises our desires in this world)and one day she finds a pearl in a *fish* and buys a tuktuk, but, she starts liking tuk tuk so much and gets so possessive about it that now when she sees the fish in the tuktuk, she thinks of it as nasty, she leaves everything for tuktuk, and goes into bewilderness i.e into the unknown world with tuktuk but soon she gets into an accident (this can be related to failure or loss)
She literally gets blind(and we, metaphorically get blinded by our desires), but this does not stops her and she uses whatever she is left with to relive that happiness, to relive that high .... . She eventually dies with her desires, but even after her death ( as we see in the post credit scene) she's still attached to the craze i.e to the tuktuk.

The short film is there for people to create their povs and share and start a conversation. How else are you gonna know that how others see it? My interpretation -
The film beautifully captures the internal strife we grapple with when torn between a pragmatic career choice for survival and pursuing our true passions. There's a poignant scene where she recoils from the fish's scent, yet it's the very source of income enabling her to realize her lifelong dream-an auto. It poignantly highlights our selfish inclinations and the diplomatic nature inherent in us. Often, we become so fixated on the end result that we neglect to appreciate and embrace the journey, the present-the profound, tangible gift that far surpasses the illusory past and fanciful future. Today is not just fleeting; it's the genuine, enduring reality we often overlook.

The most beautiful thing about such animations is that every person can have their own takeaways and interpretation of the lesson that the animation is possibly trying to teach . Our minds are so beautiful ❤️ and how uniquely they think.

But I am shocked to see most of the people taking the end of video very seriously, there assumption is to end life with the dream/goal of its failed.
Not happy to see such comments in huge numbers. Like is always beautiful to live.....

This is one of the best animated films I have ever seen in my life. The character of the fisher woman teaches us that our real beauty lies in our mind but not in our body. Thanks from my heart to all the artists behind the film.

  • @Shah-e-bekhabar
    @Shah-e-bekhabar 3 роки тому +137

This is what I interpreted : the fisher woman used to like fishing. She liked the aroma of fishes. She loved the cats and used to feed them them a whole fish. Her dream was to buy a tuktuk. When she actually buys one, what was once a dream became an obsession. She starts to hate the fish smell. She now only give remains of fish to her cats. She gets completely lost in her obsession of the tuktuk. The cats were always with her. But at the end, they could just stand by and see her ending her life with her obsession.
