Lol. I knew I couldn't be the only one! I feed the yellowjackets on my deck railing every day. They nest behind my outdoor light fixture. Providing food keeps them away from my cat's food dish and allows me to go out the door without them feeling threatened. Mine love halved grapes, apple slices, and bits of raw chicken. They get really excited when they see me and like to rub against me or sit on my head. They'll even follow me around the yard. Not once (in several years of doing this) have I ever been bitten or stung. I think they're very intelligent and very misunderstood. If you're having problems with "aggressive" wasps or frequently get stung, try treating them in a friendly manner, offer food, and you just might solve your problem. My father used to get stung and swell up each year. I told him to talk to them and be kind. Now he rescues them from his pool and laughs as they walk around on him. He hasn't been stung since!
They are cute, sweet natured creatures at heart as long as you show affection towards them. I occasionally hand feed them with honey and syrup, and I've never been stung once in my life. They got so used to me being their "provider" for their food, a friend of mine got stung a few times for sitting too close to me when I was feeding them. I guess they thought that he was going to harm me, or they thought he was going to steal their food. 😁
@@jhrockgod "They are sweet creatures" After they unprovokedly attacked your friend? Yeah I've been stung by a wasp trying to steal my food after a using my hand to swat him away (not sharing) they're pricks.
Can you blame them? You're a big monster who was swatting at them! Stinging is their only defense. Next time, try sharing a small piece of food away from where you're sitting.
@@MsTlc333 That's my only "violentless" defense tho, I can either actually harm them, or I can promote leaving by making it difficult to land. You're asking me to share my food with an insect incapable of understanding the concept of "sharing"
Hello,Landaux. No the nest was several hundred yards away. So you put jam on a log for them to feed on . Then after a week or so they remember what time you put it out and then they are waiting for food. So you just stand there, with the jam on your hand and hey presto. This is what happens. You just have to feel relaxed about it and they will also be chilled and not angry..
I feed them jam, they did like cherry the best. Just think most of the new queens are now in hibernation , i come acroos loads of them when i bring my logs indoors for the woodburner.
I have done a couple of summers on strimmers too. Every now and then one of us would hit a nest and you'd just see them running off screaming "FUCKING WAAAAASPS, RUUUUUN!!!"
@musique1975 Nah, only been stung by them once and that was a mistake as I caught one between my fingers and a jar of jam I was trying to unscrew. But you cannot count the odd time that during my work I have accidently strimmed over a whole nest of them and they have stung the shit out of me. Still I asked for it..
@Landaux Nah I have no idea where the nest is, but it would not be a good idea to do it close to one as they can get well pissed off if you muck about near an underground nest hole.
@Carbon344 Just brush them of, real gently so as you do not piss them off. I have a really nice new video of this years bunch of wasps, but I am having a slight problem uploading with my super slow way out in the country internet conection. But soon and it will be a good one.
Ah, yeah most wasps really like the sweet stuff. I guess they could be either or, then, it's hard to be sure from this video since paper wasps and yellow jackets look really similar until you get right up on top of them. Do you know which they are?
+HellerZauberer I just relax as they can pick up on you being uptight. They are just out to eat the jam, so have no reason to sting me as they do not sence any kind of threat. Wasps are brilliant creatures and when they finished the jam they would come looking for me. Weird eh.
+DarthBobify Just feed them with some jam and they will turn up every day waiting to be fed. They you just put some om your hand and that's it. Weird thing is when I used to get home from work a load of them would follow me down to the bottom of the garden because they seem to realise I would feed them..Weird eh. Oh n ya never been stung, just have to relax as they are not out to get ya, just enjoy the jam..
+littlepomegit hey I was doing a science fair project and I was seeing what would happen if I fed wasps (red mahogany wasps) super foods such as lemons broccoli ect... and now I'm done and I don't want to keep feeding them it what do I feed them
So I'm assuming that was a piece of meat you gave them and since paper wasps don't eat meat, those are yellow jackets? I wouldn't try something like this with them, even though wasps are quite intelligent and can actually learn to recognize people and such. They're just...well, not the best-tempered of insects lol.
Better off doing that with a paper wasp (polistes) Yellow Jackets is not the most docile of wasps, they are about as aggressive as the bald-faced hornet.
@@Cassiopea525 After watching Hornet King's channel, he mentioned on a video in the past (I don't know which one) that in his opinion, bald faced hornets shouldn't have been classified as a yellowjacket, and I pretty much agree.

I am feeding them strawberry jam, they really like that.

Scary. If that were me, I'd be tempted to do a throw and run, but I fear that i'd be stung in the process.
Awesome! As I have been sayiong for a while.
Wasps are good people.
I feed them honey, but it's annoying that it drips when I am holding my hand up to a nest, so I might try strawberry jam.
TOMMY GUN!!

How do you get them to do that in such great numbers?! Is the nest right there?
