Thanks for posting! I'm collecting sap to make violin varnish. Trying to identify what type of pines I'm getting the sap from.

My favorite thing about eastern Washington is the rugged fire resistant trees with beautiful nettles and aroma and textured bark

Thank you, Nebraska Tree Husker! University dendrologists are great! The more we know about this pine, found from British Columbia down into Mexico, the better. I’ve been around “P-pines” in California’s mountains, and in north Idaho. Because it’s becoming drought-stressed and attacked by beetles, my Mendocino County could try seeds collected from further south, which have evolved with more heat & drought. BARK: It’s blackish for 40-90 years, and then maturity causes the beautiful orange plates that also make the tree a bit more fire-resistant. The black stage is often called “Bull Pine”. NUMBER OF NEEDLES: good reminder, since it’s a bit hard to tell whether youngish trees are P-pine or Austrian pine. But prickles on ends of cone scales? Other sources say Austrian pine has them, too. If you’re west of the Mississippi, plant a Ponderosa pine if you have room and a bit of water for it! It does not have Austrian pines’s foliage diseases.

Superb video! Other than the Austrian Pine, are there any other ponderosa "lookalikes?"

Yes, the Jeffery Pine and they can hybridize with Ponderosas.

Are ponderosa needles edible for tea?
