  • This video is a step-by-step "do it yourself" project, that will help you show your Scouts how to build their own bug net frame and be thrifty at the same time. These bug nets are needed at summer and winter camp to keep bugs, such as spiders, mosquitos, crickets, grasshoppers, granddaddy long legs and any other unwanted bugs off you and/or your Scout as you sleep. You'll need to measure your cot and purchase some PVC pipe. This can also be a good troop project. If the Troop purchases one pipe cutter for all the scouts, you can save even more money. Also purchasing the pipe adapters in bulk will help the scouts understand how to save and cut corners, keeping under budget.
This project could be used as one of the merit badges that deals with budgets. Example: Personal Management, requirement no. 9
    Have fun!

I wonder if it would be stable to hold the bug net. without the up and down bar on the side you get in.

I would totally think YES, because the bug net is not very heavy, maybe 1 lb. (if that much). Cool Idea! You can always try it, build it that way and if you still need the other poles on the other side you could add it. You do need to consider transporting the longer poles. Let me know if it works.
