The bit with Steve from TOH crying over gay old ladies may be a call back to gravity falls. Alex Hirsch who originally voiced Steve was the creator of gravity falls and wanted to include gay old ladies but Disney was a major jerk and said no

Steve is voiced by Matt Chapman.
Only in his first appearance in Season 1 was voiced by Alex Hirsch, as he was just a faceless guard, not intended to become a recurring character.
The crew decided to bring Steve back as a "real" character with his own voice actor and design because so many fans enjoyed him in that one scene in s1.

Fun fact the reason Steve(from owl house) was crying there was because originally in gravity falls Alex wanted there to be an old lesbian couple in the background of one of the episodes but Disney didn’t want that in there but then Dana decided to get payback and added it in her show

“I’m just your problem” wasn’t even originally intended to be hinting at a past romantic relationship, and someone from Cartoon Network actually got fired for implying so. I am glad they went all in at the end though and made it canon despite the CN execs

This might be what they're going with but I don't think that's true. I remember reading the Adventure Time Wikipedia page during the first or second season and it said something about Marcy and PB being exes, but when I told people and went back to the page it was gone. I think they were always supposed to be gay, but due to censorship at the time, they had to really dance around it. If somebody got fired over that, I'm thinking it would have been a PR issue, not a canon issue.
Thing is, Rebecca Sugar was a writer of that episode and the sole write of the song so there's no way it was not intended to be a queer song at least a little bit.
Furthermore, idk where you got the info from someone was fired for implying a relationship between them because Rebecca was also the one to pitch the idea of them being exes in the first place, which was approved but they couldn't explicitly say anything due to censorship
There's literally no good explanation for that song other than hinting at a past relationship. Finn and Jake look way too shocked for it to just be a platonic "I hate you"
Plus that episode literally ends with the revelation that Bubblegum's most precious item is the shirt that Marceline gave her
