- 📺 ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
I get a lot of questions about learning songs, and how to approach them, and how to play them in a way that works for them vs. trying to play the songs exactly as the recorded version is...sometimes you have to decide which way is right for you and why, and that's what this conversation is about.

"Who cares!" Love it dude. I've always rather play my own way then worrying about note to note on someone else's song.
This REALLY needed to be said. 👏
Exactly . Before the internet , you made your best guess and went with with it . Not to mention even the tabs sites that are out there are terrible and aren't even close . Play for yourself and don't sweat the small details .
100% totally agree. Great vid. One thing I've always loved about the guitar is seeing different people playing the same song but in their own individual way whilst staying true to the basic outline of the tune. It's an individual instrument in my eyes and should be played as that individual see's fit depending on his preferences and his skill levels. Who wants repetition on repetition. In the words of Lyndsey Buckingham, "Go your own way"
That was a killer video! I am a beginner who stresses so hard on trying to nail the recorded versions. And then see Jerry Cantrell or Jim root play way different than what’s on the album.
Thank you!
It’s absolutely true. If the actual artist who wrote the song plays it differently live than they played the song in the studio then who are we to say “ that’s the way the song is supposed to be??” I played in a cover band and that experience taught me that it is perfectly fine to put your own interpretation of a song and make it your own and not feel the pressure of playing it the same way the artist did it in the studio. Sometimes the studio version is killer but that doesn’t mean you can’t put another twist on an old song to give it a new “ look “. I’ve heard some bands like the Scorpions play their songs better live!!
I always feel like I've learned something after watching one of Steve Stine's videos, and I always feel more encouraged about my playing and what I can hopefully learn.
I think people that make those comments have maybe never played live? You explained the absolute fact that playing liveand recording are absolutely two different beasts.
Its an easy thing to see if you are paying attention. Compare the numerous difference between Led Zeppilin playing live versions of their music vs the studio version. Page was an early innovator of multitracking several guitar track on a recording and the impossibility of redupicaling that live without the use of backline musicians which they did not do until much, much later (particular in the videos of O2 ; Celbration Day)
Spot on. Most of the people commenting have NEVER gotten on stage with a bass player, drummer, vocalist and played with those musicians live. A LOT of really good sounding players cant make that leap because it is so different than playing with a static jam track or playing with the song on youtube. I absolutely AGREE that you want to hit the HIGHLIGHT passes of a solo but the cold hard truth is the MEN who recorded almost never play it exactly the way it was recorded. The blues in particular shy away from that specifically and INTENTIONALLY, because of a "that's already been played" mindset. A GREAT buddy and killer guitar player once told me KNOW THE SONG (be able to play the solo "note for note" ) then forget and just play adding your own flavor and character while keeping the spirit of the solo recorded.
Its just ignorance rearing its ugly head. Ignorance about the differences between playing live and in the studio. Most people never took band class or understand what goes into playing a music instrument in any respect.
Yeah it’s one thing to be sitting and coming up with and recording a part vs running across a stage and putting on a show. I was learning a song recently and there is a part buried in the mix I can’t really make out so I just do my own thing during that section that makes sense. Like Steve said….not losing sleep over it 😂
Imagine them going ‘oh hang on, I missed that bit, go back…’ and having another crack at it.
I love listening to different versions by the same guitarist. Beat It only has two live recordings by Eddie and they're totally different from each other and the studio take (also essentially ‘live’). You can tell he was just playing by feel, which is exactly what he was trying to get across. The _Jump_ solo was cobbled together from multiple takes, and he kinda liked it so he learnt it kinda-sorta that way. Same thing with Randy Rhoads: mostly the same general direction, but rarely the same notes; and always the same overall _feel._ People who play the exact notes rarely have that feel.
A while ago a Japanese band landed on my recommendations playing note perfect Deep Purple songs, and it was like mummified ham sandwiches sprayed with glaze. Great on appearance, but not healthy for consumption.
This is my first comment on UA-cam...ever. By far one of the best ground truth videos I've seen on the realities of playing. Thanks a ton for this, Steve. Stay authentic.
You are by far my favorite guitar teacher on social media!! Love your work Steve!!!🤘🤘🤘
Best advice ever! I’ve killed myself trying to learn certain solos note for note. It was easy and natural for the guy who played it, but not for others. Make it your own!
That totally changes my attitude, not that I play "I don't care" but if it sounds right to me, it's right for me. Good to have heard that from a professional
I had a very successful run in the 80's, as a cover guy, playing the hits of the day by ear. You listen to the song, many times, and it will become clearer to you how it should be played. But only after many moons of playing, and learning the sounds of your guitar!
Steve is sooo right with this topic , and I really like the way he makes a point . Everyone's hands are different , even if you copy note for note and placement you'll still never sound like the legend you're trying to cover no matter who it is . I'm sure everyone has seen legendary players cover other players stuff and they sound good but there not original. If everyone sounded the same that would be boring . Make something great with your own hands , then people may try to copy you 😊. Keep playing , never stop 🤘.
Steve is an excellent diplomat. Most of the musican's don't play live the way they do on record because they themselves would have to learn what they did. Brad Whitford recently in an interview indicated he strived to keep certain signatures but, does not match the studio recordings. It's feel and many, many takes and they in the end choose which to put on the final release.
This made more sense than any guitar related video I’ve seen in awhile
Best advice I’ve ever received as a player. Thanks man. There’s always that pressure….now it’s gone
Agree 100%, it’s like saying “If you want to play Paranoid like Iommi you’ve got to cut the tips of your fingers off!”
Excellent words! For example, I played my take on the solo to 'Hit me with your best shot' for years and I got by. But I had my haters - "You not playing it right and you missed some notes" - many people/audiences wouldn't know as it is the song that matters. Good topic Steve.
Thanks Steve.
Amen Steve!!!
This is an excellent topic. Especially in the beginning I thought everything had to be exactly like the album. That made my progress pathetically slow. I eventually came to realize and understand exactly what you said. There are certain parts of a solo people need to hear but the rest make your own. Most people won't even know the difference unless they are a stuck up,petty, guitarist.
100% spot on what does it matter about position , play what grooves with you. I just to think oh it's got to be this way. But no that's why there are so many positions on the neck. Just play the song.
Thanks for this video Steve! 💯
When we play a song it will never be exact. It will be our interpretation.
Definitely great points, I think many get caught up in making it perfect and spend too much time trying. I’ve been much better at seeing tab and then saying, no, I don’t want to play that note there, rather here instead. Or just seeing chords and deciding where I want to play them on the FB.
Right on brother!! This is something I always think about while I’m learning songs. I never had to think about this stuff pre UA-cam back in the day!! I’d learn to the best of my abilities and yes, sometimes not perfect. But guess what … Most of the time I was entertaining. Thanks for this it’s reassuring to hear it. Awesome stuff 👍
Great sense! Well said 🎸
Steve you are one of the most talented technical teachers but you also have a common sense and flexible approach that cares about a guitarist authentic 👍
Thank you.
Great said Steve😉👍
I can't remember which song, but I heard Eddie took pieces of guitar parts then placed them in different orders to make an outline of a solo. He then had to learn it to use it in the song,Genius He is and always will be remembered.
This is so spot-on.
Spot on. Use your imagination. Rote learning is not creative. Well said young man.
100% I know a dude that thinks everything has to be studio accurate note for note, and great point about a lot of these artist don't play these songs the same live anyway, maybe the recording doesn't work well live so they adjust. I've never cared, as long as it sounds good. And the band I'm watching sounds good playing together.
Great video man! It’s easy to get wrapped around the axel tryna nail things “perfectly”, but you are exactly right. Goes to my favorite saying. If it SOUNDS good it IS good🤘😜
That's why it is called interpretation or Cover. It isn't the artist which many play Studio version different that Stage and oft on Stage played differently between theatres. People get tired.
I learned James Bond theme by Ear - Sounds really close even the Bond Chord. I also learned Sound of Silence by ear in C.
Spot on Steve. Get the hooks right and have fun or why are we doing this?!
You are a good one Steve. I started on my path to trying to understand music with one of your DVD paks years ago while working out on the ski machine. Still at it. All the best.
Love, love this video. So much important information.
There are so many comments that l agree with, ABSOLUTELY!!!!for me l like to learn a song note for note but also put my own interpretation on it , l have live recordings of bands and singers that what they did in the studio for a song release is different when played live and l love that, there is NO musical rule that says you have to play a song exactly the same way all the time-Steve your an EXCELLENT INSTUCTOR on guitar-I’m always learning from you, as Always KEEP UP The Good Work and again excellent comments Thanks Everyone!!!! 🎸
Very relevant to our discussions during band practice a few days ago.
Thank you.
Great video and 💯 percent on point..thank you steve
Well played, Steve.
So true
Hey Steve you're cool❤
Great advice. I always felt bad playing Crazy Train riff with the open A, but it works
So true. I am learning Ozzy "Bark at the Moon".
No way could I play it like Jake plays it. I have to find my own way to play it.
As long as it sounds like the song, that's good enough for me.
I defiantly played Paranoid the same way until I seen Tony play it.
Thank you, Steve. By saying the most obviuos, to me, helps a lot. Even when it comes to strumming pathern. Can you playing a song with up and down strokes or does it have to be only down strokes? Well, if it works out with up and down and it’s more comfortable for you as a player, i would say yes.
Well, thanks again. Always a pleasure watching your vids 😊👌🏼🎸
There should be more like this playing live is not about being note perfect in fact most people can’t tell anyway i saw an interview with Hendrix once and when asked how he played like he did he said I don’t know man i just play what i feel it’s different every time .
This can be an issue w/ Rocksmith players. That software wants me to play every note just like the recording, and it very much lets me know when I don’t. Sometimes (maybe even usually…) I can’t, and sometimes I just don’t want to.
The thing is, when you play exactly as the musician who created the song usually there’s some richness of details that might get lost if you play simply by what your ears are telling you. Not only that, it opens up your mind to look at the song from the musician’s point of view and learn from it, then you can tweak your way to the next level. I wish more people knew Eduardo Ardanuy from Brazil, his a magician on that…fucking crazy talented guitar player!

i appreciate this. i struggle with finding a song i want to learn. so i have like, 4 tabs open on youtube with different artists. Sometimes they are playing it differently from each other. This messes with my brain, because I don't want to learn it wrong, so I solve this by not learning the song at all. Damnit. Maybe this will help me and I'll just pick one and go with it.
That’s a cool Charvel guitar, what year and model is it Steve? Thanks for a reply if possible I would love to know. Brilliant sound too . And yes this video is relevant to all guitar players. Thank you.
there is freedom in that words thanks !
in your zoom Membership do you have technique teaching alternate picking?. there is diffent approach for that on youtube can be very confusing i think
back in the days of Circus magazine and hit parade....it was tough. to find. even some scrip issued in volume books are not telling you everything.
Funny, I learned Rush Fly By Night on bass using my index and pinky for the runs. You can move it up and use finger one and three, which may be easier, but change is hard.
Learn it and play it how you learned it.
By the way, I play the guitar part, now.
Edit: Needed this, thank you.
I think people, when learning cover songs, should learn the songs as close to the record as possible, especially guys just starting out. Most people who never “played it like the record” and just played everything “their own way” winds up with everything they play sounds pretty much the same. He mentions the pros that don’t always play it like they recorded it, but something to remember, they CAN play it right if they want to. But being UNABLE to play anything right is a different story. Anyone can play a song the wrong way.
Very to the point, learned by ear myself, used to get tab players saying thats wrong on some, but tab could show better positioning of chords, still didn,t care for tab.if only for saving time,go to guitar store, and everyone playing this months song...Eruption
This is a very interesting topic! It stopped me, besides health issues, from being a professional musician 'cause close to 50 years old i needed to realize that MY interpretation, as i still do on my YT Videos btw, are no longer valued needed or accepted by fellow musicians. Everybody suddenly wanted to hear the Note for Note, which they also could get, because YT makes the whole World of Guitarist suddenly to even local Bands, Studios, Companies...............................you get the idea. Hence my YT Channel Name.
my favorite is when someone on you tube is showing you a solo, and meticulously adds in unintentional notes, like it has to be there
LEARNED IN THE 70S ALWAYS PLAYED FIST COUPLE OF PHASES THEN GO FOR IT BUT YOU BETTER KNOW YOUR NECK TELL THE WHINERS THAT HOW THEY COULD HAVE PLAYED LOL
Paranoid: right pitch at the 7th, _and the right string gauge!_ And that means we're getting the right timbre, but _they're_ getting it wrong!
Just proves they're not listening to themselves.
Great vibes from Steve but thats nothing new. Just play it how you want to play it.
There are those who play "wrong" well, and others who play right badly. Also, if you ain't jammin', you ain't really playing, you are just mimicking.
I’ve had to play some solos for a week and walk away. Month are two later. If you did your homework it falls together.
The new guitar heroes, I’m to old to bother.
I have nothing to prove. A who’s fingers can move that quickly with such complicated progressions. The young guy’s and girls of today’s guitar styles. Unbelievable!🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸

Who cares. The writer just chose a track he liked best from about 10,20 takes.
