People don't appreciate that Ian must be under some obscene levels of stress and pressure. He's in a world championship game against the greatest to ever play (and some would argue it's by a big margin), *and* came off of the back of one of the greatest chess games -ever-, which he was a part of. Also moment captured in game over board when he put his head down on his arms and sighed. Heart breaking. Listen there is no shame losing 8 hours 136 move epic to greatest chess player of all time who had white pieces. It destroyed him. Now just take your rest day, say fuck it, and go all out like Scarface with both guns blazing. Go Sicilian with black every game and as white just start channeling Tal and turn the board into hellfire chaos. If you gonna lose then go out in ball of fire. I’d rather see that and 8-3 score than slow death by thousand cuts and 7.5-5.5.

BREAKING: Ian Nepomniachtchi challenges Magnus Carlsen to boxing match immediately following Game 8 loss. "Let's see how well he calculates with my fist in his face" said Nepomniachtchi.
I will say that not everyone was happy with Qe1 after the press conference. Cuz Magnus said that even after 40 min of thinking all he wanted was a draw, and thought Ian would capture it. Seems both of them hadn't completed recovered after game 6.
Wow, I had no idea you liked chess, that’s so cool. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for that and I hope you appreciate all these chess games with us!
Listening to Hammer and Tari on one of the Norwegian broadcasts, they were critical of the move, but also very empathetic to Ian's situation. They have been there themselves to a degree, blundering on the (if not quite as) big stage in something you've spent your entire life working for.
Having lost a legendary 130+ move, 7+ hour monster of a game is like a punch to your guts. Having lost again, this time in a much shorter game, after an obvious blunder... it's just hard to imagine what it does to your mental state. How does one pick oneself up after this? I mean, personally I'm #teamcarlsen but I would hate to see Nepo losing the match in a humiliating way. He's way too good a player to deserve that :|
@@paydma2367 I'm absolutely sure this is not what Nepo is thinking right now. To play any sport on a top level like this, you need an exceptionally competitive mindset - someone with a mindset like this just CANNOT be satisfied with a 2nd place, a runner-up, a participation award.
I've never commented here before - I just started watching chess UA-cam a couple of weeks ago. (Played a lot of chess as a kid, but it's been several decades since then.) But I've been enjoying your videos a lot over the past couple of weeks, so I wanted to wish you a happy birthday.

On a Super-GM level this game is a shocking display by Nepomniachtchi, his nerves seem to be completely gone. What a pitty, because so far the match was on an incredibly high level! Let's hope that the rest of the match will feature some energetic attempts by Ian to come back!
When you realize that game 6 was decided because nepo played a 98% acc move as opposed to a 99%, while magnus played at 99% acc the entire game. This is just brutal.
Impossible. You don't get back 2 Points from Magnus when he just has to go for draws straight. Even if Magnus gets sick and Plays with headaches and starts blundering like wild it's just impossible. The Match is over
@@rasmusjohansen6190 Fischer had is far easier. Now you can just run everygame into Stockfish Magnus 14 that will play games in a way that its either a draw or winning whereas Ian will have to insanely open up and beat against Magnus' wall and if he overextends in the slightest it will end with even worse score than +2. This match is 99.9999% over. I think only some health issue that lowers Magnus' cognitive abilities would win this for Nepo.
@@Dark_Voice Yeah true, it is very unlikely that Magnus will not win the match. Nepo needs to play more unorthodox and aggressive openings to have just a slight chance of winning. And it can easily backfire and get him even further behind in the match. But he did put a lot of pressure against Magnus in some of the first games
Unfortunately in the current state of Chess, this is fairly far from possible. Magnus can easily play for a draw from here on out. This is pretty much over, but should still be entertaining because now Ian is going to have to make some crazy plays and play for wins.
As Russian, it hurts me a lot to see such a blunder. We all need a day off now. Jan is still a fantastic player, hope he will find a way to get first victory soon.
I won't criticise Ian, when he got the seat to play I thought he would be the least challenging of all Magnus' opponents for the WC title but over the last year he's put in some really solid performances and raised his stock. He's up against the GOAT and if he can pick himself up he could definitely get a game off Magnus and make this tighter
Out of curiosity, why did you think that? Cause everyone literally thought the opposite due to Ian being the player that has the best record against Magnus in classical.
@@tensuranikki3529Historically and at the time there were many super GMs who were more consistent or better. You also have to remember the classical portion hasn't decided a WC match for a while so his h2h record felt less important than overall ability. Further to this I believe they are long time friends who have played many classical games at earlier stages in their career which may effect those stats. Also I think there a GM somewhere who has an 100% record against Magnus but he's not a super GM and not a good candidate for a WC, he just played him once and won, so h2h performance isn't everything!! That said, as I mentioned above, across 2020/21 Ian has put in some excellent performances at tournaments and played some sharp games so I was looking forward to this match and felt Magnus (although still the favourite) wasn't as big a favourite as I initially felt.
Hard to see Ian lose like this, though I can only imagine the pressure and grandeur of the situation doesn’t help. I hope he bounces back after the rest day and keeps the fight going until the end!
If you're going to lose to anyone though, wouldn't you be content with the best in the world being the one who beat you? Surely there is no shame in losing to the best.
@@user-svqmbiv I don't know about that. I suppose the only one who could answer that would be Nepo, or anyone else who lost in a world championship match. Personally for me though, I just feel that if I were Nepo that I would have a lot more to be proud of. Only two people can be in the position to play for a world championship, and there has to be a winner and a loser.
@@jornavyr2459 Usually at the moment what prevails is the feeling of disappointment, and most people only start feeling proud of their achievement after some time, once the most visceral reaction is over. For the most competitive folks out there that pride might only start kicking it post-retirement
@@hrotha A typical professional mindset though, is not to ride too high on your successes, and not to dwell too much on your failures. If Nepo is going to feel all ashamed in his performances, then how could he possibly give himself any chance in the remaining matches?

We knew at an early age that Carlsen had Fischer-level talent. What we didn't know is that he was born with mental MMA-level doggedness. I'm pretty sure he scares the crap out of his opponents as the end game begins. He will not quit, or give anything. Ever. What a champion....soon again.

Hi Levy, I am an older person, and I used to play the Petroff Defense. You were saying that 1. P-K4 P-K4 2. N-KB3 N-KB3 3. P-Q4, then NxP, is the main line for Black, in response to P-Q4. The P-Q4 is called, the Steinitz Variation, though, actually played before Steinitz. When I learned this Defense, from "Chess Openings: Theory and Practice," by I.A. Horowitz, the main line for Black in response to P-Q4 was PxP, then pushing the P to P-K5. 1. P-K4 P-K4 2. N-KB3 N-KB3 3. P-Q4 PxP 4. P-K5 N-K4 5. QxP P-Q4 6. PxP NxQP. Wikipedia, is also calling this the main line, yet, the line that GM Nepo plays is also played in Master's games. I was well aware of the Q-K2 for White, it is just that people I seemed to play would go for the Four Knight's game, or would play a Queen, or English Opening, so I seldom saw the actual variation played. If one steps back and analizes what happened here, GM Nepo could have played for a Draw with slightly more precise play, and go for a win next with the White pieces. I think this is still a good choice of a Black Defense.
Don't know if they play the remaining games if the match is decided before game 14? But if they do, it would be funny to see Magnus wheel out the Bongcloud or the Grob, or 1 a3 or something ridiculous. Probably be seen as disrespectful though.
@@SmawCity Nepo literally could be forced to move every piece, blindfolded, with his teeth, standing on one leg, all while holding his breath while having to do all that with a time frame of a bullet game and still beat him

I was watching Fabi and Hess live during the match and damn their criticism of Ian was just scathing. Hess said Ian was playing like a 2300 rather than a 2800 super GM.
Honestly might go down as one of the worst games ever in a world championship match. One blunder is excusable and understandable, but completely going off the rails with b5... Really disappointing. Like the commentators said, Magnus doesn't spiral and go on tilt. His consistency is why he is undisputedly the best player of his generation.
Happy Birthday - I really enjoy your synopsis. I like how clear and interactive they are. Some of the others, though they are accurate, the way in which they are explained doesn't really grasp the audience, especially someone who doesn't really understand what is going on so I really appreciate the fun, to the point and sometimes hilarious abridgement of this games.

This was not a great game but based on how Nepo has been playing this year it's not out of the realm of possibility that he comes back next week with some very creative and sharp lines. He is absolutely capable of taking a game from Magnus and keeping things interesting. Edit: it appears I stand corrected? Let's go Ian!
There is only 1 point awarded per game. 1/0, 0.5/0.5, 0/1. There is no situation where the sum of their points does not = the number of games played. So thank you captain obvious.

it gets funnier when u learn that "chess-boxing" is an actual thing, wtf
You, my friend, have made me genuinely snort with a good little laugh. Thank you.
Let's Gooo, first championship I've watched since I got into chess this year and couldn't be happier watching it with ya awesome commentary
I will say that not everyone was happy with Qe1 after the press conference. Cuz Magnus said that even after 40 min of thinking all he wanted was a draw, and thought Ian would capture it. Seems both of them hadn't completed recovered after game 6.
yes, magnus said it many times in the post match interview that he was tired and just wanted a draw. ian misplayed it somehow
happy birthday dude! respect to your hustle as always, and thanks for keeping us in the loop.
The goat of art essays wishing happy birthday to the chess recap goat. Goats all around
dude stop watching levy I need some more of your quality mtg vids! Thx
The goat birthday was a week ago
Wow, I had no idea you liked chess, that’s so cool. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for that and I hope you appreciate all these chess games with us!
Oh my this is just the most awesome crossover
Listening to Hammer and Tari on one of the Norwegian broadcasts, they were critical of the move, but also very empathetic to Ian's situation. They have been there themselves to a degree, blundering on the (if not quite as) big stage in something you've spent your entire life working for.
Happy Birthday Levi, you’ve helped me get back to 1200, and I enjoy every recap, and educational moment.
I hope Nepo makes a comeback. Imagine if he does. It would be legendary.
It would but legends are rare sadly
Having lost a legendary 130+ move, 7+ hour monster of a game is like a punch to your guts. Having lost again, this time in a much shorter game, after an obvious blunder... it's just hard to imagine what it does to your mental state. How does one pick oneself up after this? I mean, personally I'm #teamcarlsen but I would hate to see Nepo losing the match in a humiliating way. He's way too good a player to deserve that :|
@@reddmst no one should forget hes playing for the title if he loses hes the number 2 in the world
@@reddmst I'm totally agree, I want Magnus to win but I feel kind of sad for nepo, hope he is going to comeback and play good chess.
Happy birthday Levy from Queensland Australia. The whole family is loving what you are binging to the world championships with your recaps. We are learning a lot about this beautiful and brutal game. Love your work mate!!!
Hell yeah Aussie gang 🇦🇺
havent kept up with the games so far but after watching this and being reminded of your amazing game analysis and commentary and entertaining humour im defintly gonna go back and watch the other games, thanks for the excelently consistent uploading of such good content! also happy happy birthday
On a Super-GM level this game is a shocking display by Nepomniachtchi, his nerves seem to be completely gone. What a pitty, because so far the match was on an incredibly high level! Let's hope that the rest of the match will feature some energetic attempts by Ian to come back!
Magnus is a machine. If Ian wins a single game out of these next six that would be an incredible victory.
Magnus has lost twice in 54 WCC games. Incredible victory is right
@@LoLXaxziminrax bro what? That's insane
@@LoLXaxziminrax no way!!! Thank you for the information
When you realize that game 6 was decided because nepo played a 98% acc move as opposed to a 99%, while magnus played at 99% acc the entire game. This is just brutal.
Im rooting for magnus but i hope ian makes a comeback, good for his confidence and way more exciting.
Impossible. You don't get back 2 Points from Magnus when he just has to go for draws straight.
Even if Magnus gets sick and Plays with headaches and starts blundering like wild it's just impossible. The Match is over
@@eliasvonbrille Fischer managed to get back from two losses against Spassky. So it is possible. I don't think it's very likely in this case tho
The moment you started singing "Rook b1" I started laughing hysterically, That was so neat
That man levy a menace “I know one person who won’t be celebrating today” 😹😹😹
What are your laughing at?
As Russian, it hurts me a lot to see such a blunder. We all need a day off now. Jan is still a fantastic player, hope he will find a way to get first victory soon.
as an american, same. hope he can bounce back and get atleast one win, hopefully more. Its hard to not like the guy.
It’s upsetting to see the event we’ve been waiting for years is almost over…especially with less than stellar play from Jan.
It is brutal. But how it workes. Carlsen have already pointed out Ians mindset, if he get a loss. He uasually plays worse....
Yeah, probably in his dream today 😂😂
As a norwegian, although I obviously support Magnus, I do feel bad for Nepo. He’s a good guy.
Happy birthday bro! Hope u have a great day :D
@@randomshotz13 Thanks, that was an interesting take, so who did you feel would pose the biggest challenge for magnus? So, MVL, Giri or someone else?
This was a tough recap. Rooting for Magnus but really didn't want Ian to go like that.
"I'm gonna go celebrate my birthday, I know one person who will not be celebrating today." 🤣 Also happy birthday!
Hard to see Ian lose like this, though I can only imagine the pressure and grandeur of the situation doesn’t help. I hope he bounces back after the rest day and keeps the fight going until the end!
Me : Why can't you just play b5?
Levy : 16:02
Me : PFFFFFFFFFT yeah totally knew
I kinda feel bad for Ian. This is just depressing. One lost after another in World Championship must be devastating.
If you're going to lose to anyone though, wouldn't you be content with the best in the world being the one who beat you? Surely there is no shame in losing to the best.
@@jornavyr2459 there must be some shame in it though, if you're trying to prove you're the best.
This round is just brutal. Shows the great lengths Magnus can do to juice out every weakness of Nepo and thus control the game into his side.
Levy: ‘It’s my birthday, but fuck that this is today’s recap’
Respect for the speed this man uploads his recaps in, happy birthday Levy and thanks for the content!
I dont know why the line "its a fascinatingly stupid theory but i love it" made me laugh so hard..
We knew at an early age that Carlsen had Fischer-level talent. What we didn't know is that he was born with mental MMA-level doggedness. I'm pretty sure he scares the crap out of his opponents as the end game begins. He will not quit, or give anything. Ever. What a champion....soon again.
As always fantastic and professional recap from the one and only the goat of chess youtube and the birthday man himself, happy birthday levi rozman hopefully next year we see a Jr levi in one of ur recaps. Thanks for always making amazing(few mins after the match) recaps that even noobs like us understand what the hell is going on in the match A really intense match were we see why magnus is the goat and personally I feel h4 was unnecessary since nepo should play for a draw until he gets the rest day to prepare for smth better but I feel really sorry watching him being devistated in the watch. Came here after an absolutely insane F1 race, just seeing pawns and pieces moving is very calming XD
I think nepos d pawn breaktested magnus on move 35. He'll be directed to stewards after the game.

Damn breaking out the descriptive notation
Now Magnus can play the Bongcloud if they draw every game to game 14
Don't know if they play the remaining games if the match is decided before game 14? But if they do, it would be funny to see Magnus wheel out the Bongcloud or the Grob, or 1 a3 or something ridiculous. Probably be seen as disrespectful though.

I was watching Fabi and Hess live during the match and damn their criticism of Ian was just scathing. Hess said Ian was playing like a 2300 rather than a 2800 super GM.
"Haha this noob is playing like a god damn 2300"
-My 1600 ass
Honestly might go down as one of the worst games ever in a world championship match. One blunder is excusable and understandable, but completely going off the rails with b5... Really disappointing. Like the commentators said, Magnus doesn't spiral and go on tilt. His consistency is why he is undisputedly the best player of his generation.
Even Ian said that he didn't play like a gm in this game,at the post conference.
Funny how the guys who didn't qualify to play for the championship have so much to say 🙄
Ian is not 2800 elo rated; and he actually in this game played like a 2300. I rooted for him but I think it’s all over now
Happy Birthday - I really enjoy your synopsis.

Random obvious fact of the day:
The sum of their points is equal to the number of games played
I mean yeah. That is how math works. It will always be like that after every game.
There is only 1 point awarded per game. 1/0, 0.5/0.5, 0/1. There is no situation where the sum of their points does not = the number of games played. So thank you captain obvious.
Man, I’m gutted for Ian, even despite being a Magnus fan. I hope he can rally back and throw everything and the kitchen sink at Magnus the next several games. It would make for a sick end to a great series of games.
