Hi Mike and Janet ❤️. Mike I use T-Mobile for my phone provider in America. T-Mobile use the same network and cell towers as in Philippines. Had no trouble calling home or receiving calls from USA.
I have T-Mobile here in the US. When I visited my mom in Cebu last October, I tried calling my husband in the US thru my US phone but I made the call through wifi it was free . But you have to switch your phone to airplane mode and make sure uou enable wifi calling in the settings…i was able to talk to my husband longer for free. FYI.
Hi Mike, I have been travelling to the Philippines for 6 years. One big help has been in the last 5 years using Wise app and debit card. Highly recommended. I am Australian but most of the things you covered are relevant there also. Good advice overall!
Also, have more than one bank and have staggering expiration dates on your cards that way you will always have access to your money. The Postal Service will not forward mail to an overseas address. IPostal will use DHL., FedEX or whatever. Postmaster here.
I have no plans to retire to the Philippines, nor have I been! But somehow I ended up in the expats living in the Philippines algorithm after watching some random videos (it's interesting to learn about other countries). I haven't subbed to any of the channels apart from this one. It's good stuff Mike! For me I see it as sharing a lot of wisdom about life in general like retirement planning and I like the way you deliver it. I will say, as someone who has spent the majority of my adult life living in foreign countries (I'm in my 40s now), that from comments I'm reading, it's incredible how many people who spent their whole lives in their home country (apart from holidays) just suddenly leave and literally start a new life in a totally foreign land, without ever of having lived in a foreign country before as a resident. I don't think many people realise how huge that is, with a right of passage that won't always be nice... I guess that's why so many people seemed to get scammed and make other errors that should be easily avoided. It's great channels like this help people in this situation. By the way the bank/credit cards tip was brilliant. So true.
It is a huge undertaking when you move to a new country and it's basically contrary to the one you lived in and a country that is different all together and undeveloped to boot. Yet don't think that every expat that moves there, stays there, NO, a few will either die there or most will move back to their home country.

Hi Mike, Is it true the US Embassy will need a copy of your birth certificate if you need to replace your (lost/stolen) passport?
I do not know
Does anyone one use Mint Mobile over there?
I do not know
What american bank in the US are you using? What is the best way to transfer money from us to the Philippines?
capital one, wells fargo....I use world remit
I bought a ticket to hong Kong from cebu for $100. I wasn't able to cancel it but I didn't have the headache of worrying about the government deciding my ticket was bad, plus it went to Manila first so the opportunity was there to take half the trip. They do ask you to declare and pay taxes on the electronics on the flight so bringing something cheap and small is worth while. Except that you need to pay the tax when you are settled instead of risking the device with heavier wear and tare. The lap top I have is sorta fried and damaging it isn't a big deal.
i had 3 smartphones and 2 laptops no problem no taxes.
thanks Mike for the advice....did you cancel your Medicare and if so how?
yes 2 years ago
Meds are like way cheaper here Mike, Lot of good points, You’ll want a few cards, I use sons address, Three accounts, I’ll grab I’d card Great point, God Bless
Thanks I never really paid for meds always had health ins. but here your right not cheap
I just renewed my Passport
GREAT
Great advice as always. What happened on onward as I paid like $16 and it was fine.
Hi Matt. Yes $16 a very small price to pay but talking to some guys they buy $100 tickets and lose that money best to do your homework on all things that will affect your life.
Matthew where did you get an onward ticket for $16 ? Thanks..
There website online a day before my flight on 12/30.@@johnholiday1129
True, I gues if you do a fully refundable it saves the $16.@@mikesphilippineretirement
just buy a refundable ticket to tokyo or whereever and you can cancel it on internet as soon as you arrive. no charge no hassle

Bug spray, OTC Meds like imodium and dulcolax
they have bug spray and OFF here. but bring your own meds if you can
I needed something like "immodium" on my 3rd day in the PI. Just stopped by a pharmacy and they had the local version of it. You can also pay....per pill. So....I just paid for 6 tablets, conquered my problem and was good to go.
Are safety deposit boxes available at banks, or anywhere else? Thanks.

I noticed a lot of Banks in the Philippines allow you to open an account from overseas, would you recommend doing that before leaving? Also curious why so many people seem to take so much cash with them, I can understand having enough for an emergency, but wouldn't you use a Debit card to get money vs exchanging cash normally?
What a madness with dollar bills ! 😅😅😅
